Short answer: choose COMSOL Multiphysics Wave Optics when electromagnetic waves must interact with mechanics, heat, fluids, or other physics; choose Meep when you want open-source, scriptable FDTD simulations, nonlinear materials, and reproducible cluster runs; choose OpenFOAM for nonlinear free-surface, coastal, hydraulic, and shallow-water waves. OpenFOAM is not a general electromagnetic-metamaterial solver.
The right choice depends less on a feature checklist than on the governing equations, geometry, boundary conditions, and validation plan. A polished interface cannot compensate for an unsuitable solver, and an open-source code is not automatically easier to validate. This guide compares the three tools, explains where each fits, and gives a workflow for obtaining trustworthy nonlinear-wave results.

What makes nonlinear-wave and metamaterial simulation difficult?
Linear wave models assume that the response is proportional to the excitation. Double the source and the field doubles; excite one frequency and, ideally, the system responds at that frequency. Nonlinear media break those assumptions. Material response can depend on field amplitude, and interactions can generate harmonics, frequency mixing, self-focusing, saturation, or other amplitude-dependent effects.

Their behavior is produced by subwavelength unit cells, resonant inclusions, anisotropy, dispersion, loss, or gain rather than by a simple homogeneous material constant. A simulation may need to resolve both the fine cell geometry and the larger-scale device, while representing open boundaries, periodicity, ports, and material data consistently.

These requirements create four practical questions:
- Which physics does the solver actually represent? Electromagnetic, acoustic, elastic, fluid, and free-surface waves use different equations and numerical methods.
- Can it represent the material law? Nonlinearity, anisotropy, dispersion, gyrotropy, loss, gain, and hysteresis are not interchangeable features.
- Can it represent the geometry and boundaries? Periodic cells, ports, perfectly matched layers (PMLs), free surfaces, and moving interfaces each impose different numerical requirements.
- Can the result be reproduced and checked? Mesh or spatial-resolution studies, timestep checks, material fitting, and comparison with analytical or experimental results are essential.
For that reason, “best” is conditional. The sections below identify the best fit by problem class rather than declaring one universal winner.

COMSOL Multiphysics Wave Optics: best for coupled electromagnetic physics
COMSOL is the broadest choice when a wave problem crosses disciplinary boundaries. Its Wave Optics documentation covers electromagnetic propagation in frequency-domain, time-dependent, and eigenfrequency or eigenmode formulations. The module also documents FEM and BEM approaches, anisotropic and lossy materials, ports, PMLs, nonlinear optics, and metamaterial examples.

When COMSOL is the right fit
- Electromagnetics must couple to another field. Examples include optical or microwave heating, thermo-optic effects, structural deformation, electromechanical interaction, or fluid flow.
- The geometry is irregular or assembled from many physical domains. Finite elements are useful when curved boundaries, local refinements, and heterogeneous materials matter more than a uniform Cartesian grid.
- You need a graphical multiphysics workflow. Interfaces, materials, studies, mesh controls, and postprocessing can be assembled in one model rather than coordinated across separate codes.
- You need both steady-state and transient analyses. Frequency-domain studies are efficient for sinusoidal excitation; time-dependent studies are needed for nonsinusoidal waveforms or nonlinear media.
What to configure
Start by selecting the wave interface that matches the physical approximation, then define the constitutive properties for every domain. For metamaterials, that may mean tensor-valued permittivity or permeability, frequency-dependent loss, or an explicitly resolved unit-cell geometry. Use ports for controlled excitation and measurement, and PMLs or other open-boundary treatments when radiation must leave the computational domain.
For periodic metamaterial cells, impose periodic or Floquet-type relations where appropriate and extract quantities such as transmission, reflection, phase, or effective response only after checking that the cell and boundary conditions represent the intended experiment. A homogenized material model can be useful for a large device, but it should be compared with a resolved-cell calculation in the regime where homogenization is claimed.
Time stepping and mesh discipline
COMSOL’s time-dependent-wave guidance makes the central limitation explicit: accuracy is limited by how well the finite-element mesh resolves the waves in space and how well the time steps resolve temporal variations. Nonlinearities can create higher-frequency content, including frequency doubling, so a mesh that was adequate for the source frequency may become inadequate during the run.

- Estimate the shortest wavelength in every material, not just in the background medium.
- Refine around narrow gaps, sharp resonances, material interfaces, and regions where the field changes rapidly.
- Choose a timestep that resolves the fastest significant oscillation and the nonlinear transient, then repeat with a smaller step.
- Compare observables—resonant frequency, phase, transmitted power, harmonic amplitude, or force—under mesh and timestep refinement.
Limitations and trade-offs
COMSOL’s breadth introduces model-management and licensing costs. A large multiphysics model can become memory-intensive, and a graphical setup can hide assumptions unless the model tree, material definitions, solver settings, and mesh are documented. Commercial access may also limit who can reproduce a model. For a purely electromagnetic parameter sweep that must run on a cluster from source-controlled scripts, Meep can be a more transparent choice.

Meep: best open-source option for scriptable nonlinear electromagnetics
Meep is a free and open-source electromagnetic simulator based on the finite-difference time-domain method. It provides Python, Scheme, and C++ APIs, MPI parallelism, and one-, two-, three-dimensional, and cylindrical coordinates. Its documented material capabilities include arbitrary anisotropic, dispersive, lossy or gain, gyrotropic, Kerr, and Pockels media.
Why researchers choose Meep
- Reproducible code-first models: geometry, sources, materials, monitors, and parameter values live in scripts that can be reviewed and versioned.
- Large parameter studies: the same script can sweep geometry, material coefficients, source polarization, or frequency and distribute runs with MPI or a batch system.
- Nonlinear constitutive laws: susceptibility terms define nonlinear permittivity, with documented support for instantaneous isotropic Kerr and Pockels nonlinearities.
- Metamaterial unit cells: periodic boundaries, finite structures, and near- to far-field calculations support common cell and device studies.
Building a nonlinear model
- Choose dimensionality and resolution, balancing the smallest geometric feature and shortest wavelength against memory and runtime.
- Define the computational cell, material regions, and source waveform. For a periodic structure, set the periodicity and phase relation explicitly; for an isolated device, leave enough space for the absorbing layer.
- Fit dispersive data to the material model supported by the simulation and record the fitting range and error. Do not treat a fitted model as valid outside that range without evidence.
- Add Kerr or Pockels susceptibility terms with units and coefficients consistent with the field convention used by the model.
- Choose absorbing boundaries and verify that reflections are negligible for the observable being measured. Use symmetry only after confirming that the source and nonlinear response preserve it.
- Run resolution and timestep checks, then compare a linearized case against an analytical result or a trusted reference before interpreting nonlinear behavior.
What Meep handles particularly well
FDTD advances fields in time, so one run can reveal broadband or transient behavior rather than requiring a separate frequency-domain solve for every frequency. This is useful for resonant metamaterials, pulse propagation, harmonic generation, and automated sweeps. Cylindrical coordinates can reduce cost for rotationally symmetric systems, while MPI allows the domain to be distributed across a cluster.
Important cautions
FDTD uses a grid, so curved or extremely small features may require high resolution or staircasing mitigation. Dispersive and nonlinear media can make stability and convergence more demanding than a linear vacuum test. The timestep is tied to the spatial grid by the method’s stability condition; reducing resolution without checking stability is unsafe. Boundary placement, periodic phase, source normalization, and monitor interpretation must be encoded and documented in the script. Meep supplies the numerical engine, but the researcher remains responsible for material fitting and validation.
OpenFOAM: best for nonlinear free-surface and shallow-water waves
OpenFOAM is a general open-source computational-fluid-dynamics framework, not an electromagnetic metamaterial package. Its documented wave functionality targets continuum-flow problems. Available theories include solitary-wave models such as Boussinesq, Grimshaw, and McCowan; regular-wave models including Stokes and stream-function formulations; and shallow-water absorption models.
Problems that fit OpenFOAM
- Breaking or nonbreaking free-surface waves in tanks and coastal domains
- Hydraulic and marine flows where the interface between water and air matters
- Shallow-water propagation and wave absorption
- Studies requiring CFD coupling to turbulence, sediment, structures, or other continuum effects
How to select a wave model
Begin with the wave regime and the available solver rather than searching for a universal “wave solver.” OpenFOAM’s standard-solvers guidance states that there is no generic solver applicable to all cases; users must select a solver for the class of problem they want to solve. A solitary-wave theory is not interchangeable with a regular Stokes wave, and a shallow-water absorption treatment does not replace a fully resolved free-surface model.

Why it is a poor first choice for electromagnetic metamaterials
Metamaterial electromagnetics requires Maxwell equations, vector field polarization, dispersive and anisotropic constitutive laws, and electromagnetic ports or radiation boundaries. OpenFOAM’s documented wave families are built around CFD and continuum mechanics, so using it as the primary electromagnetic solver would require developing and validating a different physics framework. Choose Meep or COMSOL for that task instead.
COMSOL versus Meep for nonlinear electromagnetics
| Decision point | Prefer COMSOL | Prefer Meep |
|---|---|---|
| Coupled physics | Electromagnetics interacts directly with heat, mechanics, fluids, or other fields | The electromagnetic problem is mostly self-contained or coupling can be scripted |
| Model construction | Graphical interfaces, integrated materials, and multiphysics studies save development time | Source-controlled Python, Scheme, or C++ models are the priority |
| Discretization | Finite elements or FEM-BEM are advantageous for complex curved geometry and mixed domains | FDTD’s regular grid and time-domain formulation suit broadband and transient studies |
| Execution | Commercial desktop or server workflow is acceptable | MPI cluster execution, automated sweeps, and open-source deployment are required |
| Nonlinear media | Use the relevant nonlinear-optics interface and verify the constitutive model | Use documented Kerr or Pockels susceptibility terms and validate stability and fitting |
Neither tool eliminates convergence work. In COMSOL, refine finite-element mesh and time steps. In Meep, refine the spatial grid, respect the FDTD stability limit, test absorbing boundaries, and verify material fits. Compare the same physical observable—not merely a visually similar field plot—when cross-checking results between tools.
Choosing by project scenario
You need a multiphysics device model
Use COMSOL when electromagnetic energy changes temperature, deformation, fluid properties, or another field that must be solved in the same model. Its value is the coordinated formulation, shared geometry, and coupled solver workflow.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You need thousands of scripted metamaterial runs
Use Meep when each run can be described programmatically and reproducibility, parameter sweeps, or inverse-design integration matter more than a graphical environment. Store the script, material coefficients, resolution, boundary settings, and postprocessing code together.
You need a periodic unit cell or finite metamaterial slab
Both COMSOL and Meep can be appropriate. Choose COMSOL for irregular geometry, ports, and multiphysics; choose Meep for open, scriptable FDTD workflows and large sweeps. The deciding test is whether each tool can represent the intended periodic phase, source polarization, dispersion, and radiation boundary without ad hoc approximations.
You need nonlinear water waves
Use OpenFOAM and select a wave theory and solver for the regime. Neither an electromagnetic FDTD package nor an optics-focused multiphysics module is a substitute for a validated free-surface CFD model.

1. Define the physical question
Specify the observable before choosing software: transmission, reflection, resonance shift, harmonic conversion, near-field enhancement, wave height, phase speed, force, or another quantity. State the source waveform, amplitude, polarization, frequency range, and material regime. A nonlinear result without a clearly defined excitation amplitude is not reproducible.
2. Decide whether the material is resolved or homogenized
For a metamaterial, determine whether the simulation resolves each inclusion and gap or uses an effective medium. Resolved cells reveal local resonances and hot spots but cost more. Homogenization is efficient for a larger device but is valid only within the scale, frequency, angle, and polarization range used to derive the effective properties.
3. Select boundaries that match the experiment
- Use periodic boundaries for an infinite or phased array, with the correct phase shift.
- Use ports when excitation and measurement are defined as guided modes.
- Use PMLs or a validated absorbing treatment for open radiation.
- Use physical walls, inlets, outlets, and free-surface conditions for CFD waves.
4. Establish a linear baseline
Turn off the nonlinear coefficient or reduce the source amplitude until the response is effectively linear. Check resonance locations, energy balance, symmetry, and boundary reflections. This baseline isolates numerical errors from genuine nonlinear effects.
5. Perform discretization studies
Increase mesh density or FDTD resolution and reduce the timestep until the reported observable changes by an acceptable, stated amount. Refine locally where the shortest wavelength, strongest gradient, or smallest gap occurs. For nonlinear runs, include harmonics and transients in the resolution estimate rather than resolving only the drive frequency.
6. Validate material data
Record the source of every constitutive parameter, its units, frequency range, temperature, and loss convention. For dispersive fitting, report the fitting interval and residual error. For Kerr or Pockels models, document the susceptibility convention and amplitude normalization.
Best Value
7. Validate against an independent reference
Use an analytical solution, published benchmark, laboratory measurement, or a second numerical formulation where practical. Agreement in one field snapshot is weaker evidence than agreement in integrated power, phase, resonance, or wave height across a parameter range.
8. Report numerical settings with the result
Include software and module versions, dimensionality, mesh or grid resolution, timestep, solver tolerances, boundary placement, material model, source normalization, convergence history, and postprocessing definitions. These details often determine whether another researcher can reproduce the result.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Unexpected high-frequency content | Real nonlinear harmonics or insufficient resolution | Identify the generated frequencies, refine mesh or grid, reduce timestep, and compare against a linearized run |
| Resonance shifts with refinement | Under-resolved geometry, material dispersion, or boundary error | Refine around resonant features, verify material fitting, and move or improve absorbing boundaries |
| Spurious reflections | Inadequate PML, absorbing layer, outlet, or domain size | Increase absorbing-region thickness, move it farther from the device, and test reflection with a simple reference model |
| Nonlinear result changes dramatically with source amplitude | Expected amplitude dependence, unstable timestep, or inconsistent normalization | Plot the observable against amplitude, check stability, and document source units and normalization |
| OpenFOAM wave decays or reflects incorrectly | Wave theory, solver, mesh, or absorption model does not match the regime | Choose the solver for the specific wave class and validate height, phase, and absorption before adding complexity |
| Two tools disagree | Different conventions, boundaries, material fits, or observables | Match geometry, excitation, constitutive data, normalization, and measurement plane before comparing results |
Licensing, automation, and reproducibility
COMSOL is a commercial environment whose advantage is integrated multiphysics modeling. Budget for the required modules and ensure collaborators have compatible access. Preserve the model file, parameter definitions, mesh sequence, solver settings, and exported data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMeep is free and open source, with Python, Scheme, and C++ interfaces and MPI parallelism. That makes it well suited to continuous integration, parameter sweeps, and cluster workflows. OpenFOAM is also an open-source ecosystem, but a reproducible case requires the exact solver, dictionaries, mesh-generation procedure, initial conditions, and boundary files.
Open licensing does not remove scientific responsibility. A script that runs is not proof of convergence, and a commercial model that produces a smooth plot is not proof of physical correctness. In all three tools, preserve the input deck or model, record versions, and publish convergence evidence.
Bottom line: which tool should you use?
- Choose COMSOL Multiphysics Wave Optics for complex electromagnetic geometry, nonlinear optics, metamaterials, and direct coupling to heat transfer, structural mechanics, fluid flow, or other physics.
- Choose Meep for open-source, reproducible, script-driven electromagnetic FDTD, especially nonlinear Kerr or Pockels media, periodic cells, broadband transients, and MPI parameter sweeps.
- Choose OpenFOAM for nonlinear free-surface, coastal, hydraulic, solitary, regular, and shallow-water waves, using the solver and wave theory that match the flow regime.
The decisive selection criterion is the governing physics. Once the solver family is correct, invest equal attention in constitutive data, boundary conditions, spatial and temporal resolution, and validation. Those controls determine whether a nonlinear-wave or metamaterial simulation is a defensible result rather than an attractive animation.
