Best Silent Hill Games to Play After P.T. (2026 Guide)

Start with SILENT HILL 2 (2024 remake) on PS5 or PC. It is the clearest modern follow-up to P.T.’s psychological horror: oppressive sound, deliberate exploration and a tightly focused story, with current hardware support. If you want the original continuity rather than the easiest modern entry, play SILENT HILL (1999), SILENT HILL 2 (2001) and SILENT HILL 3 in that order.

The right choice depends on what you want from P.T.: atmosphere, story continuity, experimentation, chase-focused tension, a new setting, a free sampler or later-series exploration. This guide ranks each option by that fit, explains access limitations and gives practical play orders.

Quick answer: which Silent Hill game should you play after P.T.?

Rank Game Why a P.T. fan may choose it Continuity Combat or evasion Access and price status
1 SILENT HILL 2 (2024 remake) Modern psychological horror, oppressive audio and a complete, focused story Remakes the 2001 game; largely self-contained Modern combat with exploration PS5 and PC/Steam; physical and digital editions; price not stated
2 SILENT HILL (1999) followed by SILENT HILL 3 Best route for the original mythology and direct story continuity Core continuity route; play the first game before the third Combat and exploration Original or legitimate legacy access; regional and hardware availability varies
3 SILENT HILL 4: The Room Apartment-as-dungeon design and an unusually alienated structure Related to the series, but not a required continuation of the first three Combat mixed with evasion Verify the platform and edition before buying; price not stated
4 SILENT HILL: Shattered Memories A no-combat, chase-focused detour Reimagines the first game rather than continuing its plot directly Primarily evasion and pursuit Konami’s catalogue lists a PSP version; legacy access and used-copy availability vary
5 SILENT HILL f A current entry with a completely new cultural and historical setting New story in the series Survival-horror combat and exploration PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC storefronts; launched September 25, 2025; Day One physical edition
6 SILENT HILL: The Short Message Short, independent and free on PS5 Independent of previous and upcoming titles Primarily avoidance and environmental tension Free PS5 download
7 SILENT HILL: Downpour Optional later-series exploration Later spin-off, best approached after the core entries Combat and exploration Konami’s catalogue lists PS3; legacy access varies

The ranking is a fit guide for someone coming from P.T., not an objective review aggregate. Official material does not provide consistent campaign-length or replayability figures for these games, so no invented hour counts appear here.

1. SILENT HILL 2 (2024 remake): the best overall starting point

The 2024 remake is the safest recommendation when you want a game you can obtain and play on current hardware without sacrificing the series’ psychological focus. Konami describes it as “a full remake of the original SILENT HILL 2, first released for PlayStation®2 in 2001.” It launched on October 8, 2024, with physical and digital editions, for PS5 and PC through Steam.

#1 Best Overall
Silent Hill 2 (PS5)
  • Fully Remade to terrify modern audiences
  • KONAMI's intense psychological horror masterpiece SILENT HILL 2 is made exclusively for PlayStation 5
  • The main protagonist James Sunderland searches for clues in the namesake town, after receiving a mysterious letter from his wife Mary… who has long been dead
  • Experience the eerie monsters and other manifestations of James' consciousness reworked after 20 years
  • Made with state-of-the-art technology to play on modern entertainment systems in 4K

Why it follows P.T. so well

P.T. made sound, repetition and uncertainty feel like the main threats. The remake carries that emphasis into a complete story rather than a teaser-sized experience. Its oppressive audio, deliberate exploration and psychological-horror framing make it the closest current-generation starting point in this list.

What kind of player should choose it?

  • Choose it if you want current controls, current display support and a self-contained narrative.
  • Choose it if you have a PS5 or a PC capable of running the remake and do not want to hunt for legacy hardware.
  • Choose it if you are interested in the original game’s premise but prefer a modern presentation.

Remake or original?

The remake is the practical first choice for most new players. The 2001 original remains important to the series’ history, but access now depends on original hardware or legitimate legacy availability, which differs by region and platform. Playing the remake first does not prevent you from seeking out the original later; it simply removes the hardware barrier from your first experience.

2. SILENT HILL (1999) followed by SILENT HILL 3: the continuity route

If your priority is the mythology and story thread that defines the original lineage, play SILENT HILL (1999) and then SILENT HILL 3. This pair gives you the direct continuity route. SILENT HILL 2 (2001) is largely self-contained, so it can be played independently rather than inserted as a prerequisite between them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why this order matters

  1. Begin with SILENT HILL (1999) to establish the original town, its religious conflict and the series’ early design language.
  2. Play SILENT HILL 3 next for the direct continuation of that storyline.
  3. Add the 2001 SILENT HILL 2 when you want a largely independent psychological story.

The access problem

The main obstacle is not the order; it is finding a legitimate way to play the originals. Hardware, remaster status and regional storefront support vary, and there is no current universal storefront path that applies everywhere. Check the platform, region and edition before purchasing a disc or download. Avoid assuming that a listing for one console also works on another.

Who should take this route?

Use this path if historical continuity matters more to you than modern presentation. It is also the route for players who want to understand why SILENT HILL 3 is treated as a direct continuation rather than simply another story in the same town.

3. SILENT HILL 4: The Room: the experimental choice

SILENT HILL 4: The Room is the pick for players who found P.T.’s spatial ideas more compelling than its conventional game structure. Its apartment-as-dungeon design and unusual progression create a more alienated mood than the standard town-and-building pattern.

What makes its structure different?

The apartment is not merely a safe menu or a brief intermission. It functions as a recurring location and a central part of the game’s identity. That design makes the boundaries between refuge and threat feel unstable, an effect that will appeal to players who liked P.T.’s sense that a familiar interior could become frightening through repetition.

What to check before you buy

Verify the exact platform and edition available in your region. No single current storefront is published as working for every player, so a platform search should come before a purchase. Treat it as a legacy-access decision rather than assuming modern-console compatibility.

When to play it

Play it after the remake if you want a smoother introduction, or choose it immediately if experimentation is your main criterion. It is not required to understand the 1999-to-SILENT HILL 3 continuity route.

4. SILENT HILL: Shattered Memories: the no-combat detour

SILENT HILL: Shattered Memories is the most useful recommendation for a reader who wants pursuit and vulnerability instead of conventional fighting. Its design centers on evasion and chase sequences, making the player’s lack of combat power part of the tension.

Why it feels different from the core games

This is a reimagining of the first game rather than a straightforward continuation of its plot. The change in structure means you should not buy it expecting the same combat loop or a conventional sequel. Its appeal is the pressure of being pursued and having to read an environment while escaping.

Platform and purchasing caveat

Konami’s catalogue lists a PSP version. Because it is a legacy release, access may mean original hardware or a legitimate used physical copy, depending on your region. Confirm the disc, system and condition before ordering; inventory and compatibility are not universal.

Best use of this recommendation

Choose it after the remake when you want a deliberate change of pace, or choose it before the older combat-heavy entries if evasion is the feature that attracted you to P.T..

5. SILENT HILL f: the best current new setting

SILENT HILL f is the strongest choice if you want a new setting on current hardware rather than another version of the original town. Konami launched it on September 25, 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC storefronts, with a Day One physical edition.

Setting and protagonist

The story is set in 1960s Japan and follows high-school student Shimizu Hinako. Konami describes it as “the first entry set in Japan for the SILENT HILL series.” That setting makes it a destination for players who want the series’ psychological-horror approach applied to a different time, place and social context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it belongs below the remake for most P.T. fans

Its current release status is excellent, but it is not the closest tonal bridge to P.T. for every player. The remake offers the more familiar combination of modern access and established psychological-horror expectations. SILENT HILL f is better when novelty is your deciding factor.

Evidence of its current reach

Konami Digital Entertainment reported that SILENT HILL f “surpassed 2 million units in worldwide cumulative shipments,” measured as of April 22, 2026. That is a shipment figure, not a claim about individual playtime or critical ranking.

Who should pick it first?

  • Players who already know the earlier games and want a fresh setting.
  • Players limited to PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC storefronts.
  • Readers interested in a 1960s Japanese setting rather than a return to the original town.

6. SILENT HILL: The Short Message: the free sampler

SILENT HILL: The Short Message is the simplest low-commitment option: it is free on PS5, short and independent of the other entries. Konami’s official description calls it “a short game with a complete story that is independent of the previous and upcoming titles in the series.”

What the story addresses

The story deals with slander and bullying on social networks. That subject matter gives the game a contemporary angle while preserving the series’ interest in isolation, shame and psychological pressure.

Why it is useful after P.T.

It provides a complete experience without asking you to learn the older continuity or purchase legacy hardware. Its short format also makes it a practical sampler before committing to the remake or a longer entry.

What not to expect

Do not treat it as a replacement for SILENT HILL 2 or as a hidden continuation of the original plot. Its independence is the point: you can play it first, last or alone without a required series order.

  • Korean Edition supports Multi language Subtitles: English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean

7. SILENT HILL: Downpour: optional later exploration

SILENT HILL: Downpour is best reserved for readers who have already tried the core Team Silent-era games and the stronger modern recommendations. Konami’s catalogue lists a PS3 version, placing it in the same legacy-access category as other older console releases.

Where it fits in a play plan

Place it after SILENT HILL, SILENT HILL 2, SILENT HILL 3 and at least one modern entry if you want to understand its position in the broader series. Choose it earlier only if later-series exploration is specifically what you want.

Access warning

Check the exact PS3 edition and regional availability before buying. The catalogue listing establishes the platform, but it does not guarantee a current digital storefront or identical availability in every country.

Choose by the part of P.T. you want to preserve

If atmosphere and psychological storytelling come first

Pick SILENT HILL 2 (2024 remake). It combines modern access with oppressive sound and a focused psychological-horror story.

If original continuity comes first

Play SILENT HILL (1999) and then SILENT HILL 3. Add the 2001 SILENT HILL 2 separately because its story is largely self-contained.

If the looping-space idea interests you most

Choose SILENT HILL 4: The Room. Its apartment-as-dungeon structure is the clearest experiment on this list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want to feel hunted rather than armed

Choose SILENT HILL: Shattered Memories, where evasion and chase pressure replace a conventional combat focus.

Best Value

If you want the newest setting

Choose SILENT HILL f for its 1960s Japan setting, Shimizu Hinako’s story and current PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC release.

If you want to spend nothing first

Choose SILENT HILL: The Short Message on PS5. It is free, complete and independent.

If you want to survey later entries

Try SILENT HILL: Downpour after the core games and at least one modern title, subject to PS3 access in your region.

Recommended play orders

The easiest modern order

  1. SILENT HILL 2 (2024 remake).
  2. SILENT HILL: The Short Message if you want a free, short follow-up.
  3. SILENT HILL f for a new setting on current hardware.
  4. SILENT HILL 4: The Room or Shattered Memories when you are ready for a structural detour.
  5. Downpour only if you specifically want the later PS3-era branch.

The original-continuity order

  1. SILENT HILL (1999).
  2. SILENT HILL 3.
  3. SILENT HILL 2 (2001), as an independent psychological story.
  4. SILENT HILL 4: The Room for an experimental follow-up.

The shortest test before a purchase

  1. Play the free SILENT HILL: The Short Message on PS5.
  2. If its social-horror and avoidance focus work for you, move to the SILENT HILL 2 remake.
  3. If you want a completely different setting, choose SILENT HILL f.

How to handle original-game access legally

Legacy availability is the practical limitation across the 1999, 2001, PSP and PS3 releases. Before paying, verify four details:

  • Exact platform: a PS3, PSP or original PlayStation listing is not automatically playable on PS5 or PC.
  • Region: catalogue entries and storefront rights can differ by country.
  • Edition: check whether you are buying an original disc, a remaster or a platform-specific release.
  • Legitimacy: use an authorised storefront, an original disc with compatible hardware or a legitimate second-hand seller.

Do not assume that a listing’s title alone proves compatibility. Confirm the console model, language and included media before purchasing a legacy copy.

Bottom line

For most people, play SILENT HILL 2 (2024 remake) first. It is the best balance of P.T.-like psychological pressure, focused storytelling and current PS5/PC access. Choose the 1999 game followed by SILENT HILL 3 when continuity matters more than convenience, SILENT HILL f when you want the newest setting, and The Short Message when you want a free, self-contained sampler.
