For a comfortable Switch 2 session, begin with a forgiving difficulty, put frequent actions on easy-to-reach buttons, disable tiring effects, and choose handheld, tabletop, or TV play according to your eyes and hands.

Start with this comfortable baseline

Open SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance on Switch 2 and use the following order: select Apprentice or Novice, adjust Custom difficulty only if the pace or damage still feels demanding, remap attack and movement actions, turn off camera shake and hit flash if they cause discomfort, enable character outlines when enemies disappear into the background, and choose the screen position that lets you keep a relaxed posture. Install the newest patch before a long or completion-focused run.

Comfort concern First setting to change What the change does
Too much punishment Apprentice or Novice difficulty Reduces the pressure of ordinary encounters without requiring a custom build
Rapid attacks feel stressful Custom difficulty: lower attack frequency Creates more time to read and respond to incoming attacks
Hits feel visually harsh Disable hit flash; reduce or disable hit stop Removes or softens impact cues that can be tiring
Motion causes discomfort Disable camera shake Keeps the playfield steadier during impacts
Characters blend into scenery Enable character outlines Adds a clearer edge around Joe and enemies
Hands or neck become sore Move from handheld to tabletop or TV Lets you change grip, viewing distance, and controller position

These are practical starting points rather than an official preset. Your ideal combination depends on whether the limiting factor is challenge, reaction speed, visual sensitivity, readability, or posture.

Know the four difficulty choices

SEGA’s manual documents four choices: Shinobi, Apprentice, Novice, and Custom. The names do not by themselves specify exact damage or timing values, so use the in-game descriptions and your own response to determine the best fit.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Shinobi

Shinobi is the highest-pressure standard option. Choose it when you already read the game’s attack tells comfortably and want the default challenge at its most demanding. It is not the sensible starting point when your priority is relaxed play.

Apprentice

Apprentice is the useful first try for players who know action-platformers but do not want every mistake to interrupt the flow. Start here if you want to learn katana strings, kunai use, Ninjutsu, Ninpo, Amulets, and Ningi tools while retaining meaningful combat pressure.

Novice

Novice is the safer entry point when fast side-scrolling combat, platforming, or puzzle-solving is new to you, or when fatigue makes reaction windows less predictable. TechRadar described the game as generally forgiving on normal play, with unlimited lives and generous checkpoints; Novice gives you more room to use those systems as intended rather than treating each encounter as a test of speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Custom

Custom is the best option when one part of the challenge is comfortable but another is not. TechRadar reports that Custom can vary enemy damage and attack frequency. Lower enemy damage first if losing health is the problem. Lower attack frequency if several threats arriving at once create stress. Adjust one variable at a time, play a stage section, and keep the change only if it addresses the specific problem.

  • Use lower enemy damage for a forgiving margin after mistakes.
  • Use lower attack frequency when visual tracking or reaction time is the bottleneck.
  • Keep the other value unchanged when you want to preserve a particular style of challenge.

Custom difficulty is also useful for temporary changes. You can ease the settings during a tired evening, then restore a higher-pressure configuration when you are fresh, without changing your control layout or progression goals.

Remap controls to remove unnecessary reach

The game supports full control remapping, according to TechRadar. Treat that as a comfort tool, not merely a preference. The actions you press repeatedly are attack, jump, dodge, guard, and other combat or movement commands. Put them on buttons that your thumb can reach without stretching or changing grip.

A practical remapping process

  1. Open the game’s controller or controls menu and select the remapping screen.
  2. Identify the actions you use in nearly every encounter: attack, jump, dodge, guard, and any frequently triggered tool or ability.
  3. Assign the most frequent action to the button that feels most natural in your chosen grip.
  4. Place jump and dodge where they can be pressed in quick succession without sliding your thumb across the face buttons.
  5. Keep guard and your most important defensive action reachable without releasing the movement stick.
  6. Play a low-risk section and check whether your thumb, index finger, or wrist is doing extra work.
  7. Save the layout, then use the same arrangement on a paired controller so your motor memory does not change between handheld and docked play.

Do not chase an objectively correct layout; there is none established for this game. The useful test is whether you can repeat a defensive or movement action without a stretch, awkward grip shift, or accidental press. If a remap makes one sequence easier but another harder, prioritize the action you perform most often and revisit the rest after a stage.

Calm the visual effects

SEGA’s April 2026 update added configuration for hit stop, hit flash, camera shake, and character outlines. These controls let you reduce sensory intensity while preserving the game’s combat systems.

Hit flash

Turn hit flash off when bright impact frames are tiring, distracting, or uncomfortable. You can still confirm contact through animation, sound, health changes, and the ordinary flow of combat; the setting removes the conspicuous flash rather than disabling attacks.

Camera shake

Disable camera shake if screen movement makes it difficult to track Joe, causes nausea, or leaves your eyes tired. A stable camera is especially helpful during repeated impact-heavy encounters.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Hit stop

Hit stop briefly pauses action to emphasize a successful strike. If the repeated pauses feel jarring or interrupt your visual rhythm, reduce or disable the option. Keep it enabled if you rely on the pause as timing feedback and it does not cause discomfort.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Character outlines

Enable outlines when Joe or enemies blend into detailed backgrounds. This is a readability change, not a difficulty reduction: attacks, platforms, and paths remain the same, but silhouettes are easier to separate from scenery.

Change one visual option at a time and test it in a busy stage. That makes it clear whether the problem was flashes, movement, pauses, or contrast rather than forcing you to relearn every visual cue simultaneously.

Choose the mode that fits your posture and eyesight

Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld support for the Switch 2 version. Nintendo also says the handheld presentation has higher resolution, making the portable image sharper. Sharpness is useful only when the viewing distance and posture remain comfortable.

Handheld

Use handheld mode when you want the higher-resolution portable image and can hold the system without bending your neck or squeezing the controls. Increase the viewing distance or take a break if small text, bright effects, or a fixed close focus makes your eyes tired.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Tabletop

Tabletop mode separates the screen from your hands. It is a good middle option when handheld grip causes finger strain but a television is unavailable. Place the system at a stable angle near eye level, use a paired controller, and avoid propping it where you must look sharply downward.

TV

TV play provides the greatest freedom to change seating distance and controller position. Move farther back if the image feels intense, or closer only when text and map details are difficult to read. Keep the controller supported rather than holding your arms out for an entire stage.

Switch modes when your body asks for it. The game supports single-system play, so changing from handheld to tabletop or TV does not require a second copy or a multiplayer setup.

Make navigation easier with the updated map and tutorials

SEGA’s April 2026 update enlarged the in-stage map display and added a menu option to review previously seen tutorials. Use the larger map when a stage’s branching paths, hidden routes, or return trips are difficult to read on the screen you selected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to enlarge the map

  • Open the map when you are unsure whether a corridor is a branch or the main route.
  • Use it after finding a hidden path so you can orient yourself before moving on.
  • Switch to tabletop or TV if the map is technically larger but still too small at your normal handheld distance.

When to replay a tutorial

Review a tutorial instead of relying on memory after a long break or when a mechanic combines movement with a combat input. Replaying the explanation reduces the need to experiment while enemies are attacking and lets you confirm what a tool or ability is meant to do.

Install the current patch before pursuing completion

Check for updates from the Switch 2 HOME menu before starting a completion-focused run. SEGA’s April 17, 2026 notice says Nintendo Switch version 1.21 fixed a critical save-data issue involving three save slots at high completion percentages. The notice concerns the Nintendo Switch version; install the latest patch offered for your edition and region rather than assuming an older build is safe.

  1. Highlight the game on the HOME menu.
  2. Open the software options menu and choose the system’s update command.
  3. Allow the download and installation to finish before launching the game.
  4. Confirm that your save slots and completion progress appear normally.
  5. Keep more than one save slot in use when the game allows it, especially near a high-completion milestone.

A patch cannot recover data that has already been overwritten or corrupted, so do not treat updating as a substitute for maintaining a cautious save routine.

Match settings to the way discomfort appears

What you notice Likely pressure point Adjustment sequence
You lose health before you can react Enemy damage or attack frequency Use Custom; lower enemy damage, then test attack frequency if groups still arrive too quickly
Several attacks are hard to track Reaction load and visual clutter Lower attack frequency, enable outlines, and disable camera shake
Flashes or impacts make your eyes tired Hit flash, hit stop, or camera shake Disable hit flash first, then adjust hit stop and camera shake separately
Your thumb reaches or presses awkwardly Control placement Remap high-frequency actions and test the layout in a low-risk section
Neck, wrists, or fingers ache Posture or grip Move from handheld to tabletop or TV and use a supported controller position
You cannot read routes or tutorials Screen distance or interface size Use the enlarged map, review tutorials, and move to tabletop or TV if needed

Make the smallest change that addresses the symptom. If several changes are made at once, you may feel different without knowing which option helped.

What kind of game these settings support

Nintendo describes SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance as a hand-drawn 2D action platformer starring Joe Musashi. Its systems include katana combat, kunai, Ninjutsu, Ninpo, combos, Amulets, and Ningi tools. The game has more than a dozen stages and includes hidden paths, so comfort settings affect both fighting and exploration.

TechRadar characterizes the experience as fast side-scrolling combat mixed with light exploration, platforming, and puzzle-solving. Its review estimates approximately 15–20 hours for full completion, based on that reviewer’s experience; this is not a guaranteed playtime for every player. Unlimited lives and generous checkpoints on normal difficulty mean that a lower-pressure setup changes the effort required to progress, not whether the game can be completed.

Switch 2 facts that affect planning

Item Documented detail Why it matters for comfort
Supported modes TV, tabletop, and handheld You can change viewing distance, controller position, and posture
Handheld presentation Higher resolution on Switch 2, according to Nintendo Sharper portable detail may improve readability when viewed comfortably
Storage 12 GB listed by Nintendo for the Switch 2 edition Leave sufficient free space for the game and future updates
Stages More than a dozen, according to Nintendo A consistent layout and repeatable comfort settings matter across a long campaign
Release date September 24, 2026 for the Switch 2 listing Use the edition and patch information shown for your region

Nintendo’s product information identifies the game as a Nintendo Switch game with a Switch 2 edition. Store listings and software versions can vary by region, so verify the edition shown on your console before applying version-specific troubleshooting.

A repeatable setup for long sessions

  1. Update the software and verify that your save slots load.
  2. Choose Apprentice for a moderate entry point or Novice for the least demanding standard start.
  3. If the pace or damage is still tiring, switch to Custom and change only the variable causing trouble.
  4. Remap attack, jump, dodge, guard, and other frequent actions to reachable buttons.
  5. Disable camera shake and hit flash when motion or flashes are uncomfortable; adjust hit stop if pauses are also tiring.
  6. Enable character outlines when backgrounds reduce silhouette clarity.
  7. Use the enlarged map and tutorial replay option whenever navigation or memory becomes the obstacle.
  8. Select handheld, tabletop, or TV based on your current posture and viewing comfort, not on a permanent preference.
  9. After a stage, check hands, neck, and eyes before deciding whether to increase challenge or restore an effect.

This approach keeps the game’s core combat and exploration intact while giving you independent control over pressure, reaction demand, visual intensity, readability, and posture.
