Freestanding bookcases
A bookcase offers more storage but occupies floor space and can tip if a child climbs on, pulls up on, or falls against it. Secure applicable furniture to the wall as directed, and place heavier items on lower shelves. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) includes bookcases in its advice to anchor furniture securely to the wall (CPSC Anchor It! guidance).

Use shelves for books and display items
Keep the shelf contents purposeful rather than treating every open surface as storage. Position items based on who can reach them now and as the child grows. If a display item is attractive enough to invite a reach or climb, move it higher or store it elsewhere.

Use open baskets for toys
Health Canada recommends open toy storage such as baskets or canvas bins and advises removing toy-bin lids. A lid-free bin makes it easier to put toys away without adding a heavy or closing lid to the storage setup. Choose a placement that keeps small toys and other tempting items out of a baby’s reach.

Keep small parts, strings, and cords in mind
Health Canada advises keeping toys with loose or small pieces, strings, or cords out of reach until a child is at least three years old and has stopped putting non-food items in their mouth. This is Canadian public-health guidance; consider the child’s stage and the specific item when organizing the room.

Install and arrange shelves with safety in mind
- Follow the product instructions. Assemble and install shelves or furniture using the manufacturer’s directions, including the specified hardware and mounting method.
- Use a suitable wall connection. Health Canada advises securing nursery furniture to a stud, or using heavy-duty drywall anchors or anchors made for the specific furniture type. Confirm that the selected connection is compatible with the furniture and wall.
- Anchor applicable furniture. CPSC recommends anchoring furniture such as bookcases and dressers securely to the wall. CPSC’s guidance concerns furniture tip-over prevention; it is not a certification of a particular shelf, strap, bracket, or installation in your home.
- Put heavier items low. Keep heavier objects on lower shelves, and avoid displaying appealing items where they could encourage a child to climb.
- Keep cords away from the crib. Health Canada says to mount a baby monitor on a wall out of reach rather than on the crib. Keep cords from monitors, lamps, sound machines, and other electronics out of the crib area. As the agency puts it, “Cords and kids don’t mix!” (Health Canada’s nursery safety guidance).
These steps reduce avoidable hazards, but no general recommendation can confirm that a particular shelf or anchor is suitable for an individual wall. Check the product instructions and select hardware appropriate to the installation.

U.S. safety data illustrate why anchoring matters, but the figures cover different categories and periods. CPSC reported that its Anchor It! campaign period was associated with a nearly 50-percent decline in tip-over-related injuries and deaths in the United States (CPSC, 2025). That campaign statistic does not measure the safety of any particular nursery shelf.

Separately, CPSC reported 234 fatalities from clothing-storage-unit tip-overs from January 2000 through April 2022, including 199 child fatalities, and an estimated 84,100 clothing-storage-unit tip-over injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments from 2006 through 2021—an estimated annual average of 5,300 (CPSC, 2023). These statistics concern clothing storage units, not every shelf or bookcase. The clothing-storage-unit rule took effect September 1, 2023; it should not be read as a rule covering all nursery shelving.
For wider context, CPSC estimated an annual average of 22,500 U.S. emergency-department-treated tip-over injuries during 2018–2020, with nearly 44% involving people under 18. That estimate covers furniture, TVs, and appliances, so its scope differs from the clothing-storage-unit figures (CPSC, 2022 report).
