Best Sheep Breeds for Grazing Around Solar Panels: A Site-by-Site Guide

Katahdin hair sheep are the best-documented choice for hot, humid solar sites in the available evidence, but there is no universal winner. North Carolina State University’s agrivoltaics demonstration uses Katahdin ewes because the breed is described as heat-tolerant in the Southeast and does not require shearing. For many vegetation-control contracts, however, healthy local wethers may be a more practical choice than any particular breed.

Penn State Extension says any sheep breed can potentially graze a solar array. The right decision depends on your climate, forage, panel clearance and spacing, predator pressure, water access, labor, and whether income comes from meat, wool, or a vegetation-management service. No controlled, multi-breed study has proved that Katahdin, Dorper, Suffolk, or another named breed performs best at every site.

Which sheep should you choose?

Start with the animals that are already healthy and productive in your climate, parasite environment, and forage base. Then match the flock to the array and the business model. A hair breed can reduce heat and shearing labor; a locally adapted wool breed may fit an existing wool enterprise; and wethers can simplify a vegetation-control schedule because there is no lambing flock to supervise.

The strongest breed-specific evidence in this material is for Katahdin ewes in the Southeast. NC State reports that their hair coat helps heat tolerance and eliminates shearing, and its demonstration places them in the shade of photovoltaic panels. That is a regional management recommendation, not proof that Katahdins outperform every other breed in every climate.

Choice Where it fits Advantages Watch-outs
Katahdin hair sheep Hot or humid regions, especially the Southeast Documented use in an NC State agrivoltaics demonstration; heat-tolerant hair coat; no routine shearing Evidence is a regional demonstration, not a universal breed trial; verify local forage and parasite adaptation
Wethers of a locally adapted breed Vegetation-management contracts and simpler grazing plans No lambing supervision; stocking guidance in the NSW Agrivoltaics Handbook is based on wethers Still require dependable water, predator protection, forage monitoring, and safe infrastructure
Dorper Sites where local producers already manage the breed successfully May work in some systems The NSW handbook flags potentially greater infrastructure risk in some arrays; inspect behavior around posts, wires, and gates
Wool breeds Operations that sell wool or already own shearing equipment Can align grazing with an established wool enterprise Shearing and heat management add labor; no source here establishes a wool breed as superior under panels
Other breeds Sites with strong local adaptation and an appropriate enterprise Penn State Extension reports that any breed can potentially be used Breed reputation for meat or wool does not predict array performance without site-specific observation

How to compare breeds for a solar array

Heat load and coat

Panel shade can reduce direct sun, but it does not remove heat and humidity. Hair sheep such as Katahdins avoid shearing and are described by NC State as heat-tolerant in the Southeast. Wool sheep can still graze successfully, but the operator must schedule shearing and watch for heat stress. Coat type should be considered together with air movement, shade availability, water, and the season in which grazing occurs.

Local adaptation and parasites

Choose genetics that stay in good body condition on the forage available at the site and that have a history of coping with the local parasite burden. The USDA Agricultural Research Service review by Stewart and colleagues (2025) identifies regional forage and climate as major variables and lists parasite management as an unresolved issue. A breed that thrives on a nearby farm may perform differently where shade changes forage growth or wet areas persist beneath panels.

Temperament and infrastructure

Calm, manageable sheep make it easier to move temporary fencing, inspect equipment, and remove an animal that is sick or caught near a post. Observe a prospective flock around gates, tracker motors, cable guards, and maintenance vehicles before committing to a large stocking. The NSW handbook’s warning about Dorpers is a reminder that infrastructure interaction matters as much as production traits.

Enterprise goal

A paid vegetation-management contract rewards reliable ground cover control, low labor, and predictable access to the array. A meat enterprise may value growth, lamb survival, and a nearby market. A wool enterprise must account for shearing, fleece handling, and heat management. Do not assume that the breed with the best price or growth record in one enterprise is the least-cost choice for solar grazing.

Why wethers are often the simplest starting flock

Wethers are castrated males, and they remove pregnancy, lambing, and newborn-lamb decisions from a vegetation-control plan. The NSW Agrivoltaics Handbook bases its stocking guidance on wether sheep and warns that lambing inside an array can make constant supervision difficult and compromise animal health. A flock of mature wethers can therefore be easier to schedule around mowing, electrical inspections, and vegetation growth.

Ewes and lambs can be used where the operator has the labor, facilities, and veterinary support to supervise them. If lambing is part of the business, keep it outside the array unless you can provide continuous observation, safe shelter, adequate nutrition, and a rapid response to illness or difficult births.

How many sheep per acre can a solar farm support?

There is no universal rate. In a 2025 Agricultural Systems study listed by the U.S. Geological Survey, researchers tested zero to 10 sheep per hectare for two grazing seasons at an operating 18-megawatt, 21.85-hectare facility in New York. They identified 8 sheep per hectare as the site-specific optimum for adequate forage, flock condition, and vegetation control. That is approximately 3.2 sheep per acre (8 ÷ 2.471), but the conversion does not make the rate portable to another site.

Figure What it means Qualification
0–10 sheep/ha Range tested in the New York study Two grazing seasons at one operational facility; not a general recommendation
8 sheep/ha Best balance reported for that facility About 3.2 sheep/acre; applies to that climate, forage, layout, and animal class
Your starting rate Begin below the estimated carrying capacity Increase only after body condition, residual forage, and vegetation control remain acceptable

The USDA ARS review says evidence on optimal stocking density, regional forage, long-term native-plant effects, water, and supplemental feed is still sparse. Treat a published number as a starting hypothesis, not a promise. Shade can change plant growth and palatability from one row to the next, and a dry summer can reduce carrying capacity quickly.

Design the array for sheep before they arrive

Check clearance, spacing, and wires

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Farmer’s Guide says standard utility-scale panel heights generally accommodate sheep. Measure the actual lowest edge, tracker movement, row spacing, inverter locations, drainage channels, and service roads. Properly encase wires and coordinate fencing, gates, and equipment with the solar design. A sheep-safe array is planned with the installer, not improvised after energization.

Use movable electrified paddocks

Portable electric net fencing or an equivalent electrified system lets you rotate grazing, protect topsoil, and keep animals away from maintenance work. Before stocking, test the energizer under the site’s vegetation and confirm that gates provide a clear route for people and equipment. Keep a repair kit and a way to create a temporary holding pen when a panel or inverter needs service.

Establish forage early

NC State advises establishing palatable grasses before panel installation where possible. If panels are already operating, map forage under the modules, between rows, and along the perimeter. Do not rely on a seed label or a generic pasture table: shade, compaction, rainfall, and mowing history can change both yield and species composition.

Put water close to the grazing area

Provide dependable water within or immediately beside each grazing zone. Hauling water over long distances can become the limiting labor and welfare cost, particularly during hot weather. Check trough stability, float valves, hose protection, freezing risk, and the route vehicles must take to refill them.

Plan predator and handling coverage

NC State’s practical guidance calls for full-time guardian dogs where predators are a concern and herding dogs for moving sheep. Match coverage to the perimeter, flock size, and predator pressure; a dog that is present only during occasional visits is not the same as continuous protection. Provide a safe way to catch and examine an animal without climbing through electrical infrastructure.

A step-by-step solar-grazing launch plan

  1. Survey the site. Record panel height, tracker clearance, row spacing, gates, wire runs, drainage, shade, forage, water points, and maintenance access. Obtain the solar operator’s rules for entering the site and isolating equipment.
  2. Choose the animal class. For a vegetation-only contract, start by evaluating healthy local wethers. For a mixed meat or wool enterprise, document how lambing, shearing, and marketing will fit around the array schedule.
  3. Verify adaptation. Ask the seller for health, body-condition, parasite, and production records from a comparable climate and forage base. Quarantine and inspect incoming animals according to your veterinarian’s protocol.
  4. Build the paddocks. Install movable electrified fencing, protected gates, and a holding area. Test voltage and walk the entire perimeter for snag points, exposed cables, and gaps under panels.
  5. Install water and shade options. Place troughs where every paddock can be served without dragging hoses across electrical equipment. Confirm that panel shade is usable throughout the day and season; provide another option if it is not.
  6. Start conservatively. Stock below the local carrying-capacity estimate rather than immediately applying the New York study’s 8 sheep/ha result. Introduce sheep when forage is established and inspect them frequently during the first rotation.
  7. Rotate by observed conditions. Move the fence when residual forage, soil exposure, and animal body condition indicate that the paddock has reached its grazing limit. Shorten the stay or reduce numbers during drought, excessive rain, or slow regrowth.
  8. Record and adjust. Keep dates, paddock area, animal numbers, rainfall, water use, body-condition scores, parasite treatments, escapes, fence repairs, and vegetation height. Use those records to set the next rotation rather than copying a rate from another facility.

Monitoring: the measurements that protect sheep and panels

Animal condition

Inspect appetite, gait, breathing, coat condition, fecal consistency, and body condition at every visit. A flock that is losing condition despite apparently green forage may face parasites, low-quality shaded plants, water problems, or excessive stocking. Isolate and treat sick animals with veterinary guidance.

Forage and soil

Walk representative areas under panels, between rows, and at fence lines. Look for bare soil, poisonous or unpalatable plants, erosion, manure concentration, and regrowth. Move animals before repeated passes expose soil or damage desirable ground cover.

Equipment condition

Inspect cable guards, junction boxes, tracker components, posts, and gates for rubbing, chewing, impact, or manure buildup. Coordinate repairs with the solar operator; never allow livestock handling to substitute for electrical lockout procedures.

Predator and escape events

Log missing animals, fence failures, dog incidents, and tracks or carcasses. A pattern may require a different paddock boundary, additional guardian coverage, altered rotation timing, or a lower stocking pressure at the perimeter.

Costs and labor that change the breed decision

Hair sheep can remove scheduled shearing from the budget, which is valuable when the grazing contract pays a fixed amount per acre or per visit. Wool sheep may still be profitable when the operation already owns shearing equipment, has trained labor, and sells fleece. Compare the full annual labor requirement rather than the purchase price of the animals.

  • Animal acquisition: purchase price, transport, quarantine, identification, and replacement rate.
  • Fencing: portable netting, energizer, batteries or power supply, grounding, gates, repairs, and storage.
  • Water: troughs, tanks, pumps, hoses, freeze protection, refill labor, and emergency supply.
  • Protection and handling: guardian and herding dogs, feed, veterinary care, catching equipment, and a secure holding area.
  • Forage: establishment, reseeding, mowing outside the grazing window, mineral supplementation, and hay or other feed during shortages.
  • Solar coordination: staff time for access rules, lockouts, inspections, and moving sheep before maintenance.

NC State Extension small-ruminant specialist Andrew Weaver described sheep as, “To me, they’re the most scalable vegetation management system.” Scaling that system means scaling water, fencing, inspections, and animal care at the same time as acreage.

Common failure modes and fixes

Using the New York rate without checking forage

Symptom: sheep lose condition or paddocks become bare even though the plan uses 8 sheep/ha. Fix: reduce numbers or shorten grazing periods, test forage and parasites, and rebuild a carrying-capacity estimate from your own records.

Choosing a breed by reputation alone

Symptom: animals that perform well for meat or wool struggle with heat, parasites, or array handling. Fix: favor local adaptation and observe a small pilot flock around the actual infrastructure before expansion.

Leaving lambing inside the array without supervision

Symptom: unattended births, weak lambs, or delayed treatment. Fix: schedule lambing outside the array or provide continuous supervision, shelter, nutrition, and veterinary support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Underestimating water labor

Symptom: troughs run dry, hoses cross service routes, or staff skip checks in hot weather. Fix: move water closer, add capacity and alarms where appropriate, and assign documented refill and inspection duties.

Fencing that was added after construction

Symptom: escapes, damaged wires, blocked maintenance access, or sheep rubbing on posts. Fix: redesign paddock boundaries with the solar operator, protect cables, test the energizer, and maintain a clear equipment corridor.

What is established—and what is not

Solar grazing can control vegetation while preserving panel efficiency, and more than 4,000 megawatts of U.S. solar capacity included sheep grazing as of November 2023, according to NREL InSPIRE data cited by the U.S. Department of Energy. Those figures show that the practice is operating at significant scale, not that one breed or stocking rate works everywhere.

The USDA ARS review (2025) identifies unresolved questions about regional forage, species-specific grazing behavior, long-term effects on native plants, stocking density, parasites, water, and supplemental feed. Long-term ecological outcomes and controlled comparisons among Katahdin, Dorper, Suffolk, and other breeds remain limited. The defensible decision is therefore a measured pilot: use locally adapted animals, start below estimated capacity, protect infrastructure, and adjust from documented animal and pasture responses.
