Best settings to change on a new Lenovo Android tablet

By Freedom251 Team · · 13 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up a new Lenovo Android tablet in this order: finish the basic setup, install every available system update, create a PIN or password, review app permissions and lock-screen notifications, then adjust sleep, brightness, dark mode, and battery indicators. Lenovo uses different Android builds across tablet models, so treat the menu paths below as approximate and use the closest matching label on your device.

Before changing model-specific features, open Settings > About tablet (or the equivalent) and note the exact model and Android version. That information determines which settings, charging features, accessories, and menu names apply.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

A quick first-day checklist

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi and confirm the date and time.
  2. Finish Google-service setup and create a screen lock.
  3. Install available system updates before restoring or customizing everything.
  4. Review permissions for restored and newly installed apps.
  5. Choose what notifications can show while the screen is locked.
  6. Set sleep, brightness, dark-mode, and battery-indicator preferences.
  7. Check the exact model before buying a case, screen protector, or stylus.

This order reduces avoidable rework. An update can change menu names, and the model number determines whether a feature exists at all.

1. Identify the tablet before changing settings

Find the model and Android version

Open Settings > About tablet. Record the model name or number and the Android version. Lenovo says setting paths and available features can vary by model and software version, so this is the quickest way to avoid following instructions meant for a different tablet. The same information is useful when you later check a user guide, troubleshoot an update, or verify whether a case, screen protector, or stylus is compatible.

If your tablet uses a slightly different label, use the Settings search field for About tablet, model, or Android version. Do not assume that a feature shown in a Lenovo article is present on every tablet. Two tablets with similar names can have different Android builds and different controls.

Complete the first-run basics

During setup, connect to Wi-Fi, set the correct date and time, configure Google services, and establish a screen lock. Lenovo lists these as core initial setup steps in its tablet FAQ: Lenovo Android Tablets: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). If you skipped a step, you can complete it later from Settings. Correct date and time are particularly useful for account sign-ins, security checks, and scheduled updates.

Do not rush past the setup screens simply to reach the home screen. Confirm that the intended Google account is being used, and make sure you know the screen-lock credential you create. If another person will use the tablet, decide during setup whether the device is personal, shared, or intended for supervised use; that choice affects how much lock-screen information you want to expose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Install system updates before personalizing the tablet

Updating first prevents you from troubleshooting an old software build and may change the names or locations of later settings. Connect the tablet to a reliable Wi-Fi network and, if the battery is low, connect its charger before starting.

Check for an update

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Look for System > System Update. On some Lenovo tablets the route is About tablet > System update.
  3. Tap the option to check for updates and read the version or release information shown by the tablet.
  4. Choose the install or download option and follow the on-screen prompts.
  5. Allow the tablet to restart if the installer requests it.

These routes come from Lenovo’s update guidance and tablet FAQ, but the exact wording is device dependent: How to upgrade your Android phone or tablet and Lenovo Android Tablets: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

Do not power the tablet off or unplug it while an update is installing. Interrupting the installation can leave the software incomplete. Keep the screen available for prompts and wait until Android reports that the process has finished. A restart during installation can be normal; repeatedly forcing a restart is not.

If no update appears

  • Confirm that Wi-Fi is connected and try the update check again.
  • Verify the model and Android version in About tablet; update availability is device dependent.
  • If the menu is not under System, search Settings for update or check About tablet.
  • Do not infer that an absent update means the tablet is defective. Lenovo distributes updates according to device model, software build, and availability.
  • If an update is offered but cannot proceed, reconnect to Wi-Fi, connect the charger, and retry rather than interrupting an installation that has already begun.

Once the update finishes, reopen Settings and check the model and Android-version information again. The update may have moved a control or added a more specific label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Use a real screen lock

A screen lock protects locally stored accounts, files, and app data when the tablet is misplaced or left unattended. Lenovo recommends a PIN or password rather than leaving the device without a lock. Open Settings and search for screen lock, lock screen, or security; the category name varies by Android version.

Choose between a PIN and a password

Choice Best fit Trade-off
PIN Most owners who want a quick unlock with meaningful protection Shorter to enter than a password, but easier to observe if it is simple or reused
Password Tablets containing sensitive work, financial, or personal information Stronger when long and unique, but slower to type on a touchscreen
No lock Only a deliberate choice for a device with no private data Anyone holding the unlocked tablet can open its apps and information

Lenovo gives a six-digit password as an example in its security guidance; that example is not a universal requirement. Create a PIN or password you can remember without writing it on the tablet. Avoid obvious sequences and numbers that are publicly associated with you. Do not reuse a code that also unlocks another important account.

Biometric options are model dependent

Some recent Lenovo tablets offer face recognition, but Lenovo says availability varies and recommends checking the device user guide: How to keep your device more secure. Treat facial unlocking as a convenience layered on top of a PIN or password, not as a reason to remove the underlying credential. If your tablet does not show a biometric option, that is normal for models without the required hardware or software.

When comparing lock choices, prioritize the way the tablet will actually be used. A PIN is generally faster for frequent unlocking; a password may be preferable when the tablet holds more sensitive information. The right choice is the strongest credential you will reliably use, not a feature the model does not support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Audit app permissions instead of accepting every request

After installing or restoring apps, review what each one can access. Lenovo’s security guidance recommends granting only permissions required for an app’s function: How to keep your device more secure.

Review permissions app by app

  1. Open Settings and go to Apps (the label may be Apps & notifications).
  2. Select an app, then open Permissions. You can also search Settings for app permissions.
  3. Read each permission and ask whether the app’s main function needs it.
  4. Allow a permission only when it is needed. Choose the most restrictive option offered when that still lets the app work.
  5. Open the app and test its essential function. If something genuinely fails, return to the same screen and restore only the permission involved.
Permission decision Question to ask Practical response
Keep allowed Is access central to what the app does right now? Leave it enabled and revisit it after a major app update.
Allow only when needed Does the app need occasional access rather than continuous access? Use a one-time or while-in-use choice if your Android build offers one.
Deny Can the app perform its advertised function without this data? Deny it, then test the app. Re-enable only if a specific feature requires it.

Permission names and controls differ by Android version. A permission prompt is not proof that access is necessary; judge it against the feature you are trying to use. Revisit permissions after restoring a backup, installing a group of apps, or updating an app because those events can introduce new requests.

5. Decide what appears on the lock screen

A screen lock protects access, but notifications can still reveal message previews, account activity, or other private details while the tablet is locked. Lenovo documents lock-screen and notification controls, while noting that exact paths depend on the software version: Lenovo Android Tablets: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

Choose a notification privacy level

  • Show all content: convenient when the tablet is used privately at home.
  • Hide sensitive content: shows that a notification arrived without exposing its full text.
  • Show no notifications: best when other people may see the locked screen.

Search Settings for lock-screen notifications or open the notification settings and look for a lock-screen option. Review the setting after adding a mail, messaging, calendar, or work account because individual apps may have their own notification controls. This is a privacy choice, not a universal optimization: convenience and confidentiality point in different directions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Tune display settings for comfort and battery use

Set a sensible screen-sleep timeout

Lenovo’s documented route for an Android tablet is Settings > Display > Sleep: Dim display issue – Android tablet. Choose a timeout that matches how you use the tablet rather than treating one value as universally best.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Use pattern Reasonable approach What to watch for
Reading or recipes Use a longer timeout so the screen does not turn off between glances. A long timeout keeps the display lit when you walk away.
Shared or portable use Use a shorter timeout to reduce the chance of an unattended unlocked screen. You may need to tap the screen more often.
Children’s or kiosk-like use Choose a value that prevents constant interruptions but still turns the display off when forgotten. Balance convenience with battery drain and privacy.

If the display dims or locks sooner than expected, check both the sleep timeout and any separate battery-saving behavior offered by your Android build. If it stays on too long, shorten the timeout instead of repeatedly pressing the power button.

Adjust brightness without chasing a single “best” number

Use the brightness slider in Display or Quick Settings. Set it high enough for the room and low enough to avoid glare. A bright setting that is comfortable outdoors may be unnecessarily harsh indoors; lowering it can also reduce power use. If your tablet offers automatic or adaptive brightness, treat it as a starting point and correct it when the sensor misjudges the room.

Try dark mode when it suits your apps and environment

Dark mode is available through Display or Quick Settings on supported builds. It can be more comfortable in dim rooms, but some apps may keep their own appearance controls. Turn it on, use the tablet normally, and switch back if text, images, or a particular app is easier to read in the light theme. Lenovo’s tablet FAQ covers brightness and dark-mode controls while warning that Android versions place them differently: Lenovo Android Tablets: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

Brightness, dark mode, and sleep are separate decisions. Dark mode does not replace a suitable brightness level, and a comfortable brightness does not justify leaving the display awake indefinitely.

7. Make battery information useful, and verify protection features

Show the battery percentage if you plan around charge level

Battery percentage is an optional status-bar convenience. Enable it from a Battery or status-bar setting if the estimate helps you decide when to charge. If you prefer a less crowded status bar, the battery icon alone is sufficient. The location and wording vary by Android version; search Settings for battery percentage.

Check battery details after a full day of normal use

Open the Battery section to see the information your model provides about charge level and consumption. Use that screen to identify an app that is unexpectedly active, rather than changing several unrelated settings at once. Record what you observe before making a change so you can tell whether the adjustment helped. A percentage indicator is useful for planning, but it is not a battery-health diagnosis.

Battery Protection Mode is not a universal Lenovo tablet setting

Lenovo documents a Battery Protection Mode for a Smart Tab context. In that model-specific guidance, the feature stops charging at 60% when the tablet remains continuously connected to power: How to enable Battery Protection Mode – Smart Tab. Do not assume your tablet has this option, and do not treat 60% as a target for every Lenovo device. Look in the Battery settings for a clearly named protection or charging option; if it is absent, follow the ordinary charging controls supplied for your model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important comparison is availability, not a universal “best” charging percentage. A Smart Tab instruction cannot be transferred automatically to another Lenovo tablet. Never install an unverified utility simply to imitate a missing model feature.

8. Handle missing or different settings without guessing

Different menu labels are expected across Lenovo tablet models and Android versions. Use the following approach instead of forcing a path that does not match your screen.

What you see Likely explanation What to do
The stated menu path is absent Your Android build uses a different category or label. Search Settings for the key term, such as update, screen lock, sleep, or permissions.
A feature is not listed at all The model may not support it. Check About tablet and the user guide for that exact model before changing anything else.
An update is offered but installation cannot proceed The tablet may need a stable connection, sufficient charge, or a restart. Reconnect to Wi-Fi, connect the charger, retry, and keep the tablet powered on during installation.
An app stops working after a permission change The denied permission is required for that specific feature. Restore only that permission, test again, and leave unrelated permissions disabled.
The display turns off too quickly The sleep timeout is shorter than your usage pattern. Return to Display > Sleep or search for sleep and choose a longer interval.
The tablet has no Battery Protection Mode The documented 60% control is limited to the Smart Tab guidance. Use the battery settings actually provided for your model; do not install an unverified tool to imitate it.

Lenovo’s FAQ and security material both emphasize that settings and features vary by device and Android version: Lenovo Android Tablets: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and How to keep your device more secure.

9. Confirm accessories and model-specific extras

Before buying a case, screen protector, or stylus, use the model number from About tablet. Physical fit and stylus support are model dependent. A generic accessory recommendation is risky because similarly named Lenovo tablets can have different dimensions, ports, camera positions, or pen support. Check the exact user guide and compatibility listing for the model you own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same caution applies to feature guides. If a Lenovo page describes a Smart Tab charging control, face recognition, or a particular menu path, verify that your tablet is the matching model and Android version first. An absent setting can be an expected hardware or software difference, not a fault.

10. A practical stopping point

Your first setup is complete when the tablet has finished its available update, requires a PIN or password, exposes only the app permissions you accept, keeps unwanted notification details off the lock screen, and uses display and battery settings that fit your routine. Keep the model number and Android version noted somewhere safe; they are the reference points for every future Lenovo support instruction.

Do not keep changing settings just to make the tablet look “optimized.” Revisit one setting at a time when your routine changes, an app needs a permission, or Lenovo delivers another software update. That makes it easier to identify what helped and preserves the security choices you made during setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is System Update on a Lenovo Android tablet?

Try Settings > System > System Update. On some models it is under Settings > About tablet > System update. If neither path appears, search Settings for “update.” Menu wording and update availability vary by model and Android version.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What should I do if an Android update is installing?

Keep the tablet powered on and connected as instructed. Lenovo warns not to power it off or unplug it while installation is in progress. Wait for the restart or completion message.

Is a six-digit screen-lock password required?

No. Lenovo uses a six-digit password as an example, not a universal requirement. Choose a PIN or password that is difficult for others to guess and that you can reliably remember.

Does every Lenovo tablet support face recognition?

No. Lenovo says face recognition is available on most recent tablets, but features depend on the model. Check the tablet’s user guide and Security settings.

Should I allow every permission an app requests?

No. Grant only permissions needed for the app’s function. Deny or restrict access when the app can work without it, then restore only the specific permission if a feature genuinely fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the best screen-sleep timeout?

There is no universal best value. Use a longer timeout for reading or recipes, and a shorter one for shared or portable use. The documented Lenovo path is Settings > Display > Sleep, although labels vary.

Should I turn on battery percentage?

Turn it on if seeing an exact charge estimate helps you plan charging; leave it off if you prefer a less crowded status bar. Search Settings for “battery percentage” if the control is not obvious.

Can every Lenovo tablet stop charging at 60%?

No. Lenovo’s 60% Battery Protection Mode instructions are specifically for a Smart Tab context. Look for a clearly named protection option on your model and do not assume the control exists elsewhere.

The Bottom Line

Best day-one setup: identify the model, connect to Wi-Fi, finish the basic Google setup, install updates without interrupting them, secure the tablet with a PIN or password, limit app permissions, protect lock-screen notifications, and then tune sleep, brightness, dark mode, and battery indicators to your routine. Treat every menu path and extra feature as model dependent.
