Start with that game’s Performance or Quality mode, then set a realistic frame-rate cap, adjust resolution scaling and lower the most expensive graphics options in small, reversible steps.
What settings can I change to make my Star Wars game run more smoothly? Use the workflow below, changing one option at a time and replaying the same area. The menus and labels differ between games, so a setting documented for Jedi: Survivor, Jedi: Fallen Order, Squadrons, Battlefront II or Outlaws should not be treated as a universal preset.

Why one “best” preset does not exist
A smooth game is not defined by the highest number shown in a menu. It is defined by a frame rate your system can sustain without distracting drops, hitching or uneven frame pacing. A 60-frame target that holds during combat can feel better than an uncapped rate that swings between 90 and 45.
Star Wars games also expose different controls. One title may offer a console Performance Mode, another may provide a PC resolution-scale slider, and another may rely mainly on preset quality levels. Your screen’s refresh rate, the console or PC’s graphics capability, the selected resolution and whether ray tracing is enabled all change the result. Use the exact game and platform as the starting point.

Set a baseline before changing anything
Identify the game and platform
Write down the title, whether you are playing on a console or PC, the display resolution and refresh rate, and the mode currently selected. On PC, note whether the game is running in windowed, borderless or exclusive full-screen mode if that choice is available. Menus can expose different options according to hardware, operating system and display.
Choose a repeatable test area
Use the same busy location, combat encounter or flight sequence for every comparison. Move through it for several minutes rather than judging a setting from a static menu. Record whether the problem is a low average frame rate, short hitches when entering a new area, image shimmer, input delay or tearing. A repeatable route prevents a change in scenery from being mistaken for an improvement.
Change one variable at a time
Save the current configuration, change one setting, restart the game if it requests a restart, and run the same test. If you change shadows, resolution scaling and ray tracing together, you cannot tell which adjustment helped or which one damaged image quality. Keep a short note of each change so you can return to the last stable setup.

A practical tuning sequence
- Select the game’s performance-oriented mode. On consoles, look for a Performance Mode or a choice between Performance and Quality. On PC, begin with the game’s recommended or medium preset rather than immediately forcing every option to its minimum.
- Set a sustainable frame-rate target. Pick a cap your hardware can maintain in the test area. A display capable of 120 or 144 Hz does not mean the game or console can hold that rate. Available caps depend on the title and system; Fallen Order, for example, may list 30, 45, 60, 90, 120 or 144 FPS.
- Decide how synchronization should behave. Enable VSync when you prefer synchronized output and can accept its latency or frame-rate behavior. Disable it only when another synchronization method and a stable cap provide a better result on your setup. Test for tearing and control responsiveness rather than assuming one choice is always superior.
- Adjust output resolution or render scale. Lowering the internal render resolution usually gives the GPU less work. If the game offers dynamic resolution scaling, enable it when maintaining a consistent frame rate matters more than a fixed pixel count. Keep the display output resolution separate from the internal scale in your notes.
- Reduce expensive visual effects selectively. Lower shadows, view distance, foliage, volumetric or visual effects, post-processing and anti-aliasing one at a time. Keep texture quality higher if your graphics memory allows it; textures affect memory use and sharpness differently from effects that must be calculated every frame.
- Re-test demanding moments. Walk through the same area, fight several enemies or repeat the same flight maneuver. A setting that looks fine in an empty corridor may fail during explosions, crowds or long-distance views.
- Stop when frame pacing is stable. Do not continue lowering quality after the game is smooth enough for your display. The goal is a consistent, readable image, not the lowest possible settings.
What the main settings actually change
Performance and Quality modes
Performance mode normally lowers some visual detail, output resolution or internal render resolution to pursue a higher frame rate. Quality mode generally preserves more detail or resolution at a lower target. The names are not standardized, so read the description shown in the game instead of assuming that every Performance mode has the same target.
Frame-rate cap
A cap limits the maximum rate so the system does not render frames it cannot sustain. Match the cap to a rate your hardware holds in the heaviest scene you regularly play. If the menu offers several values, test the lower stable choice before moving upward. The documented choices in Fallen Order—30, 45, 60, 90, 120 and 144 FPS may appear depending on the system—illustrate why the available list is not a guarantee that every machine can reach every value.
VSync and tearing
Fallen Order‘s PC documentation describes VSync as synchronizing the game’s frame rate with the monitor refresh rate “for more stability.” That is a game-specific description, not a promise that it will remove every hitch. VSync can add latency or create a noticeable step down when the game cannot meet the display timing, so compare it with your chosen cap in the same test area.

Resolution scaling and dynamic resolution
Render scale changes the number of pixels the game creates internally before presenting the image. Lower values usually improve GPU headroom but make fine detail softer; higher values improve rendering quality at a performance cost. Dynamic resolution scaling changes that internal resolution as load changes to pursue a steadier rate, which can make image sharpness vary during demanding scenes.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Shadows, view distance, foliage and effects
Shadow quality and view distance can be expensive because they add work across many objects. Foliage detail and visual effects become especially costly outdoors or during explosions. Lower these before sacrificing every other option if your problem appears only in busy scenes. Anti-aliasing and post-processing alter edge quality and image treatment; reduce them only as far as needed because their visual cost is obvious at lower resolutions.
Textures and ray tracing
Texture quality primarily affects memory use and surface detail, while ray tracing adds lighting calculations. If the game stutters when moving through areas, insufficient graphics memory or asset streaming may be involved; lowering textures can help in some systems, but the result depends on the game’s implementation. Ray tracing is a particularly large trade-off when available: disabling it can provide substantial headroom, but the exact gain is game- and hardware-dependent.

Game-specific settings documented by publishers
| Game and platform | Documented controls or preset | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Jedi: Survivor on console | Performance Mode can be turned on or off to limit resolution to 1080p for increased frame rate; graphics-quality and view-distance levels are available, with custom controls for shadow quality, texture quality, visual effects and foliage detail. | Use Performance Mode when a higher, steadier rate is more important than maximum resolution. Lower custom options only after testing the mode itself. |
| Jedi: Survivor on PC | Ray Tracing is on by default in the first-boot guidance; the game also exposes graphics and distance controls. | Turn ray tracing off first if GPU load is the limiting factor, then test quality and distance settings individually. The publisher’s controller recommendation concerns the play experience, not performance. |
| Jedi: Fallen Order on PC | Window Mode, Max FPS, VSync, Dynamic Resolution Scaling, graphics presets, view distance, shadow quality, anti-aliasing, texture quality, visual effects and post-processing. Max FPS choices may include 30, 45, 60, 90, 120 or 144 FPS depending on the system. | Set the cap and VSync deliberately, then use dynamic resolution or lower the most expensive quality controls if the target is not sustained. |
| Squadrons on PC | Resolution scale is explained as a percentage: below 100 increases performance, while above 100 increases rendering quality. | Treat 100 percent as the reference point. Move below it in small increments when the GPU is overloaded; move above it only after performance is already stable. |
| Outlaws on PC | The PC specifications/features page lists presets and upscaler settings, including a 1080p, 30 FPS, Low preset with the upscaler set to Quality. | This is a listed game configuration, not a promise that every PC will deliver 30 FPS. Use it as a starting point, then verify performance on your own hardware. |
Console guidance: start with the game’s mode switch
Jedi: Survivor
EA’s accessibility and settings documentation says Performance Mode can be turned on or off to limit resolution to 1080p for increased frame rate. Select it when consistent motion is your priority, then test the same demanding area. If the game still struggles, use its available graphics-quality, view-distance, shadow, texture, visual-effects and foliage controls where the console version exposes them.
Do not interpret the 1080p limit as a universal console rule for every Star Wars title. It is the documented behavior of Survivor‘s mode. Other games may use a different resolution, dynamic scaling behavior or target rate.

PC guidance by game
Jedi: Fallen Order
Open the PC video settings and work through Window Mode, Max FPS, VSync and Dynamic Resolution Scaling before fine-tuning individual quality controls. A practical sequence is to choose a cap your system can hold, test VSync on and off, and then enable dynamic resolution if maintaining the target matters more than a fixed internal resolution. Lower view distance, shadows, anti-aliasing, visual effects or post-processing only when the test still misses the target. Texture quality can remain higher if memory pressure is not the cause.
Best Value
Squadrons
Use the resolution-scale explanation supplied for Squadrons as a clear example of the trade-off: any percentage below 100 increases performance, while percentages above 100 increase rendering quality. Start at 100 percent, lower it gradually until the target is stable, and stop when cockpit instruments and distant objects become uncomfortably soft. This direction applies to the documented Squadrons control; do not assume another game labels or scales its slider identically.
Battlefront II
For PC troubleshooting, Star Wars Support advises that it is generally not a good idea to run other programs in the background while playing Battlefront II. Close unnecessary browsers, launchers, recording tools or overlays as a test, then repeat the same gameplay route. This is a troubleshooting step for that PC article, not a guarantee that background applications are the cause of every game’s stutter.
Outlaws
The listed 1080p/30 FPS/Low configuration with the upscaler set to Quality is a named Outlaws preset context. Use it as a conservative starting point on PC, confirm that the upscaler and target are actually selected, and then raise individual options only while the same demanding scene remains stable. It should not be read as a hardware recommendation or a result guaranteed on every configuration.
Diagnose the symptom instead of lowering everything
The frame rate is consistently too low
- Choose Performance mode or a lower frame-rate cap.
- Lower render scale or enable dynamic resolution.
- Reduce ray tracing, shadows, view distance and visual effects in that order if those controls exist.
- Retest at the same output resolution so you can tell whether the gain came from fewer internal pixels or a quality change.
The game looks smooth in menus but hitches while exploring
- Repeat the route after closing unnecessary background software on PC.
- Test a lower texture setting if the hitch occurs when entering new areas and graphics memory may be constrained.
- Check the title’s current patch notes. Settings cannot repair every engine or asset-streaming problem.
The image tears
- Test VSync with a cap your system can sustain.
- Check whether your display or platform offers another synchronization option, and avoid stacking conflicting caps without testing.
- Compare the same camera movement with VSync enabled and disabled; choose the combination that removes visible tearing without unacceptable latency.
The image is sharp but motion feels uneven
- Lower the cap to a rate the system holds continuously rather than chasing a higher peak.
- Enable the game’s dynamic resolution option if available.
- Use the same demanding scene for several minutes; a brief high reading in an empty area is not evidence of stable performance.
Controls feel delayed after enabling synchronization
VSync can change perceived input response. Compare it with a stable cap and the synchronization options available on your display or platform. Keep the setting that gives you acceptable responsiveness and frame pacing; there is no universal choice that suits every panel and hardware combination.
When a patch matters more than a preset
EA’s Jedi: Survivor Patch 9 notes focused primarily on PC performance and quality of life. They list framerate improvements for various hardware configurations and fixes for several sources of framerate hitching. The notes also say ray tracing was optimized for CPU usage and should scale better for high-end GPUs. Those are the publisher’s statements about that update, not a present-day guarantee for every computer. Keep the game updated before spending hours tuning a problem that a patch may have addressed, and consult the title’s current patch notes when symptoms persist.
Quick Recap
A compact checklist for a stable setup
- Confirm the exact Star Wars game, platform, display refresh rate and output resolution.
- Record the original settings and select the title’s Performance mode or a moderate preset.
- Choose a frame-rate cap that survives the most demanding scene you play.
- Test VSync deliberately for tearing, stability and input response.
- Lower render scale or enable dynamic resolution before reducing every quality option.
- Reduce ray tracing, shadows, view distance, foliage and visual effects one at a time.
- Keep textures higher when memory is not the bottleneck and image detail matters.
- Close unnecessary background programs when troubleshooting a PC hitch, especially in Battlefront II.
- Replay the same route after each change and keep the last configuration that is consistently smooth.
- Install relevant game updates and read their performance notes when settings do not explain the problem.
