Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor bright daytime 360 footage, start with Video at 8K/30 fps, AdaptiveTone on, Standard color, Medium video sharpness, and both shutter speed and ISO on Auto. Keep FlowState stabilization enabled. This is Insta360’s general-purpose recommendation for well-lit scenes; motion, low light, backlighting, mode, aspect ratio, and delivery format can justify different choices.
The recommended starting point
The X4 Air’s best all-around setup depends on what you are recording, but the clearest manufacturer baseline is intended for daylight and other well-lit scenes. Configure the camera as follows:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Control | Daylight starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mode | Video, 360 capture | Records the full spherical view so you can reframe later. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 8K/30 fps | Maximizes detail and reframing latitude while retaining a conventional motion cadence. |
| Tone | AdaptiveTone on | Helps balance bright and darker parts of a well-lit scene. |
| Color | Standard | Provides a ready-to-use image without requiring a log-style grading workflow. |
| Video sharpness | Medium | A moderate level that avoids making edge halos and compression artifacts more obvious. |
| Shutter speed | Auto | Lets the camera select an exposure suitable for changing daylight. |
| ISO | Auto | Lets sensitivity adapt as the camera turns toward brighter or darker parts of the scene. |
These values are an Insta360 recommendation, not the result of an independent laboratory comparison. Firmware, the selected mode, lighting, and the platform on which you publish can all change the most appropriate choice.

360 Video
Use 360 Video when you want to capture the entire scene and decide the viewing direction during editing. The camera records both lenses’ spherical image, and you can reframe it in the Insta360 app or Studio. In-camera stabilization is not available for the listed X4 Air 360 modes; FlowState can be applied during post-production instead.
Single-lens Video
Single-lens Video records a conventional field of view. It can provide frame-rate choices that are not available in every 360 mode. For example, the camera supports 4K 16:9 up to 60 fps in this mode. Do not assume that this 4K/60 option appears when you switch to 360 capture; confirm the choices shown on the camera’s current mode screen.
FreeFrame Video
FreeFrame Video is the X4 Air mode with an in-camera Horizon Lock control. It is useful when you want a flatter, reframable clip while keeping the horizon level during movement. The exact resolution and frame-rate combinations remain mode- and aspect-ratio-dependent, so check the displayed options before recording.
How to set up a daylight shot
- Select Video and decide whether you need 360 or a single-lens/FreeFrame view. Choose 360 for maximum reframing freedom; choose a flat mode when you already know the intended viewing direction or need its available high-frame-rate options.
- Set the highest useful resolution. For a general 360 daylight clip, select 8K/30 fps. If your chosen mode or aspect ratio does not display that combination, use the highest resolution offered for that mode rather than forcing a setting the camera does not support.
- Turn AdaptiveTone on. This is the recommended starting point for bright scenes with a mixture of highlights and shadows.
- Set Color to Standard. Select another color profile only when you have a defined post-production workflow that requires it; Standard is the manufacturer’s straightforward, ready-to-use choice.
- Set Video Sharpness to Medium. Excessive sharpening cannot restore detail that was lost to focus, motion blur, dirty lenses, or compression. Medium is the safer baseline for natural edges.
- Leave shutter speed and ISO on Auto. Auto exposure is the recommended general-purpose choice for changing daylight. If you later switch to manual exposure, make one change at a time and inspect both moving subjects and shadow areas.
- Confirm stabilization behavior. FlowState is enabled by default for X4 Air Video and Loop Recording. In 360 modes, plan to apply stabilization in the app or Studio during editing; in FreeFrame Video, look for the in-camera Horizon Lock control.
- Record a short test clip. Pan through the brightest and darkest parts of the scene, then inspect the result at the intended delivery resolution before committing to a long take.
Settings for movement and slow motion
Frame rate controls how frequently the camera records motion. A higher rate can make fast movement look smoother and gives you more flexibility for slow-motion playback, but it usually requires a mode-specific reduction in resolution, a faster shutter, more storage, or more light.

| Priority | Practical choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum 360 detail and reframing | 8K/30 fps when offered by the selected 360 mode | Less slow-motion flexibility than a higher-rate setting. |
| Smoother action in a flat view | Single-lens Video at 4K/60 fps, where the camera displays that option | It is a single-lens mode, not an automatic substitute for 360 capture. |
| Slow-motion delivery | Choose the highest supported frame rate in the current mode and aspect ratio | Resolution and low-light performance may be lower; verify the exact on-screen combination. |
For walking, cycling, or vehicle footage, test the camera at the speed you will actually use. A nominally higher frame rate does not remove blur if the scene is dark or the shutter remains too slow. Conversely, increasing shutter speed to reduce blur can make a clip look harsh and can require a higher ISO. The X4 Air’s available choices vary by mode and aspect ratio, so rely on the mode screen rather than assuming single-lens specifications apply to 360 recording.
Low-light recording: what to change and what not to assume
There is no single manufacturer-validated “best” low-light preset for the X4 Air in the available guidance. The 8K/30 recommendation is explicitly a well-lit baseline. At night, indoors, or under tree cover, compare short clips in the actual location and choose the combination that preserves useful detail without unacceptable noise or motion blur.
Exposure decisions
- Keep ISO as low as the scene allows. Raising ISO brightens the image but can reduce image quality by making noise and smearing more visible.
- Watch shutter speed when subjects move. A slow shutter gathers more light but increases motion blur. A faster shutter freezes movement but may force ISO higher.
- Do not judge only a still frame. Inspect moving subjects, fine textures, and dark areas in playback; low-light softness often appears during motion.
- Retest after changing frame rate. Higher frame rates generally demand more light, so a setting that looks acceptable at 30 fps may become noisy or underexposed at 60 fps.
A practical method is to record two or three 10-second clips from the same position: first with Auto exposure, then with a deliberately faster shutter, and finally with a lower frame rate if the mode offers one. Compare faces, foliage, road texture, and shadow noise at the export resolution you intend to use. This is a scene-specific decision, not a universal X4 Air specification.

When the sun or a bright window is behind your subject, Insta360’s X4 Air product guidance recommends considering Active HDR. HDR can help preserve information in strong highlights and darker foreground areas, but it does not make every moving subject artifact-free. Check which resolution and frame-rate combinations remain available after enabling it, then record a short test with the camera moving at the intended speed.

AdaptiveTone and Active HDR address different shooting situations. AdaptiveTone is the general daylight starting point; Active HDR is the option to investigate when the scene has especially strong backlighting or contrast. Use the mode screen to verify that the selected combination is supported.
How to get sharper footage before recording
Clean both lenses correctly
Fingerprints, dust, and oil can create flare, glowing highlights, and a general loss of contrast that looks like a focus problem. Before every important take, inspect both lenses under an oblique light and wipe them with a professional lens cloth or suitable lens tissue. Avoid abrasive materials and check the lens again after handling the camera or changing a mount.
Protect the lens area
The X4 Air lenses are replaceable, but replacement parts must match the X4 Air specifically. A scratched or damaged lens can soften an entire 360 stitch, so confirm exact compatibility before ordering a replacement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the right sharpness expectation
The Medium sharpness setting is a processing choice, not a focus adjustment. It cannot compensate for a dirty lens, an incorrectly seated lens protector, missed focus in a flat mode, or motion blur. If details look mushy, fix those causes before increasing electronic sharpening.

Stabilization, horizon control, and mounting
Insta360 describes FlowState as reducing shakiness during recording to produce smoother, more stable images. On the X4 Air, FlowState is enabled by default for Video and Loop Recording. The important distinction is where stabilization is applied:
| Workflow | Stabilization behavior | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 360 Video modes | No in-camera stabilization in the mode compatibility table; FlowState is available in post-production. | Stabilize while editing in the Insta360 app or Studio. |
| Single-lens modes | Support differs by mode between in-camera and post-production processing. | Check the current mode’s on-screen controls and the compatibility information in the app or Studio. |
| FreeFrame Video | Provides an in-camera Horizon Lock control. | Enable Horizon Lock when a level horizon matters more than retaining every possible framing option. |
A stabilization algorithm cannot correct a loose accessory. Selfie sticks, helmet mounts, and other supports must be assembled firmly; movement at a joint can appear as shake or stitching errors. If playback suddenly looks unstable, reseat every connection and record another short test before changing exposure or sharpness.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Export without throwing away detail
Capture bitrate and export bitrate are different numbers. The X4 Air product specifications list a maximum recording bitrate of 180 Mbps. That is the camera’s capture ceiling, not a guarantee that every clip records at 180 Mbps and not the same as the bitrate you choose when rendering an edited file.
Recommended Studio export
- Open the stabilized and reframed project in Insta360 Studio.
- Choose H.265 when your playback devices and editing software support it.
- Set the export bitrate to 50 or higher, following Insta360’s guidance.
- Match the export resolution and aspect ratio to the destination instead of downscaling before reframing.
- Play the rendered file all the way through and inspect fine detail, moving edges, and stitching before deleting the original.
Recommended app export
For exports from the Insta360 app, the guide recommends 4K resolution and a bitrate of 50. The app workflow is convenient for phone editing, while Studio is the preferred route when you need the highest-quality desktop export and more control over reframing and stabilization.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
H.264 remains useful when a destination or older device cannot decode H.265, but compatibility comes at the expense of compression efficiency. Select the codec based on where the file will be edited and played, not simply on the largest number in the menu.
Storage and recording requirements
The product specifications list support for microSD cards up to 1 TB and recommend UHS-I V30 cards. Use a card that meets those requirements and has enough free space for the selected resolution and frame rate. Long 8K recordings and high-bitrate exports create large files, so allow extra capacity for duplicate takes and keep a separate copy of important footage.
- Format or prepare the card using the camera’s supported workflow before a major shoot.
- Check remaining capacity after changing from single-lens to 360 recording, because file sizes and recording times can change.
- Do not confuse a V30 card rating with the camera’s 180 Mbps maximum video bitrate; they describe different parts of the workflow.
Troubleshooting soft, shaky, or noisy footage
| Symptom | Likely causes | Fixes to try first |
|---|---|---|
| Uniform haze or flare | Fingerprints, oil, dust, or a contaminated lens protector | Clean both lenses with a professional cloth or tissue and inspect against a light. |
| Edges look smeared during movement | Slow shutter, insufficient light, or an unnecessarily high frame rate | Test Auto exposure at 30 fps, add light, or choose a mode-appropriate lower frame rate. |
| Footage is shaky after export | FlowState was not applied in post, or a mount/selfie stick is loose | Enable stabilization in the app or Studio for 360 footage; tighten and reseat all accessories. |
| Horizon tilts in a flat moving shot | Horizon Lock is unavailable or disabled in the current mode | Use FreeFrame Video and enable its in-camera Horizon Lock control when supported. |
| Night footage is bright but noisy | ISO has risen to compensate for insufficient light | Add light, slow the movement, or compare a lower frame rate; do not expect a universal low-light preset. |
| Export looks softer than the camera file | Low export bitrate, early downscaling, or an incompatible codec conversion | Use Studio with H.265 and bitrate 50 or higher, or the app’s 4K/50 recommendation, then compare the rendered file. |
A practical decision guide
Choose 8K/30 when detail and reframing come first
Use the daylight baseline when you are capturing a walk, travel scene, landscape, or other shot that will be reframed later. It gives the spherical image the most detail available in the recommended setup and avoids assuming that a single-lens frame-rate option works in 360 mode.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose a higher frame rate when motion is the priority
Use a supported 60-fps option for fast action or slow-motion delivery when the current mode offers it. Single-lens 4K 16:9 can reach 60 fps, but verify the 360 and FreeFrame menus separately. Expect to trade some resolution, low-light latitude, or reframing flexibility.
Choose Active HDR for difficult backlight
Enable it when a bright sky, window, or sunlit background overwhelms the foreground. Confirm the resulting resolution and frame rate, and test moving subjects for HDR artifacts.
Choose FreeFrame with Horizon Lock for level movement
Use this route when a conventional-looking clip and a stable horizon matter more than recording the entire spherical scene. It is the X4 Air mode identified with an in-camera Horizon Lock control.
Pre-shoot checklist
- Confirm the mode: 360, single-lens, or FreeFrame.
- Verify the actual resolution, aspect ratio, and frame-rate choices shown on the camera.
- For daylight 360, use the 8K/30, AdaptiveTone, Standard, Medium sharpness, Auto shutter, and Auto ISO baseline.
- Clean both lenses and inspect for scratches or fingerprints.
- Confirm FlowState behavior and plan post-production stabilization for 360 footage.
- Tighten selfie sticks, helmet mounts, and every connector.
- Use a UHS-I V30 microSD card within the stated 1 TB maximum.
- Record a short test in the actual light and inspect motion, shadows, highlights, and stitching.
- Export through Studio with H.265 and bitrate 50 or higher when your devices support it; use the app’s 4K/50 guidance when exporting on a phone.
What to remember
Start with Insta360’s 8K/30 daytime setup, but treat it as a baseline rather than a promise that every scene will look identical. Mode and aspect ratio determine which options exist; frame rate changes motion rendition and light requirements; ISO and shutter choices govern the balance between brightness, noise, and blur. Clean lenses, secure mounts, and the correct stabilization workflow often improve perceived sharpness more than an aggressive sharpness setting. Finally, preserve the recorded detail by distinguishing the camera’s 180 Mbps capture maximum from the export bitrate and by following the Studio or app export recommendations for the destination you actually use.
