What “best settings” means for Salt and Soil right now
Salt and Soil: A Frontier Family Sim is a single-player strategy, simulation and RPG title from DelosX. Its store description places you in charge of resources, labor, buildings, animals, trade, neighboring communities, changing borders and threats across a family history running from 1609 to 1900. That makes map legibility more important than visual spectacle: you need to identify information quickly while making decisions.

Steam currently marks the game as coming soon, so a final, universal settings recipe cannot be confirmed. The developer has said that the first playtest wave ended and that access would return in separate waves after feedback and changes are reviewed. Salt and Soil system requirements
Steam publishes minimum specifications for Windows and macOS. They indicate the hardware the developer has chosen as a starting point; they are not benchmark results and do not promise a particular frame rate, resolution or level of smoothness.

The Windows and macOS rows are not directly interchangeable: they describe different operating-system and memory baselines. A machine that satisfies a minimum does not automatically deliver a fixed frame rate. Actual results can vary with the final build, resolution, background applications, thermal limits, drivers and the complexity of the map view.
Why readability is a performance setting in a strategy map
The developer has described three map iterations. In the developer’s account, the first version was easy to read but looked like a diagram. A more atmospheric version had the desired mood, yet roads and buildings disappeared into the texture. The third version was less lush but worked better at strategy scale.

In a later discussion, Roman explained that the map must keep borders, resources, settlements and historical events visible on different terrain. Markers are therefore not decorative extras; they are part of how the game communicates state.
“I decided to stick with the third version of the map after all, because the gameplay doesn’t require very complex interaction with the map—you need to keep an eye on borders, resources, settlements, and historical events, and it’s easier to do that using markers that are clearly visible on any type of terrain.”
This explains the practical test for any visual change. A setting is not an improvement if it makes the game look richer while hiding the information needed to manage a settlement or follow a border.
Before changing anything: establish a reliable baseline
Because no tested preset has been published, your first job is to make comparisons repeatable. Use the same save, camera position and map conditions whenever possible.

- Confirm the build and access. Make sure you are running the current test or release build available to your account. Playtest builds can change between waves.
- Record your hardware. Note your operating system, processor, installed RAM, graphics hardware, display resolution and whether the machine is on battery power. Compare these with the platform-specific minimums above.
- Choose a repeatable scene. Use one map view that contains roads, a settlement, borders and resource indicators. If the game’s simulation changes over time, pause at the same point for each comparison.
- Observe before editing. Separate a low frame rate from a readability problem. Stutter while panning is a performance symptom; markers blending into terrain is a legibility symptom. You may have both.
- Change one control only. Write down the original value, make one adjustment, return to the same scene and compare. Changing several items at once prevents you from knowing which change helped or caused a problem.
A cautious settings workflow when a build exposes controls
The following is general PC troubleshooting, not a list of confirmed Salt and Soil options. If a control is absent from your build, skip it rather than trying to force it through a configuration file or launch command.
1. Start with the display mode the build provides
If the menu offers windowed, borderless or exclusive fullscreen modes, test them separately in the same scene. Keep the mode that gives you a stable image and lets you read the map comfortably. Do not assume one mode is universally faster; behavior depends on the operating system, drivers and other applications.
2. Test resolution or display scaling only if it is visible
If the game exposes a resolution or render-scale control, lower it by one step and repeat the baseline comparison. Check panning, zooming and text at normal viewing distance. A change that raises responsiveness but makes labels or markers indistinct is not a good trade for a strategy game. Restore the previous value if the image becomes too soft or information is lost.

3. Evaluate any quality or effects controls individually
Some builds may expose visual-quality controls, but the available documentation does not confirm their names or existence. If your menu includes one, alter a single option, test the same map view and note whether the result affects frame pacing, image clarity or both. Avoid assuming that a “low” preset is optimal: it may remove visual cues that help distinguish terrain or structures.

4. Use map modes or overlays when they are actually available
If the interface provides a map mode or overlay, turn on only the information needed for the current task. For example, a resource-focused view can reduce visual competition while you plan production, while a border view can help you follow territorial changes. Verify the feature in your build; the developer has discussed visible markers, not a confirmed list of selectable modes.
5. Recheck every strategic marker after each change
- Can you distinguish roads from the terrain beneath them?
- Are settlement markers visible at the zoom level you normally use?
- Do borders remain obvious where terrain becomes busy?
- Can you identify resource indicators without excessive zooming?
- Are historical-event markers and labels still readable?
Keep the change only when performance is acceptable and all of these information checks still pass.

The game is slow everywhere
- Confirm that the machine meets the correct Windows or macOS minimum row, including the operating-system version and graphics requirement.
- Close browser tabs, recording tools and other applications that consume processor time or memory.
- Connect a laptop to power and use its normal performance profile rather than a battery-saving mode.
- If the game exposes resolution or scaling, test a lower step as a general troubleshooting measure, then verify map readability.
- Check for operating-system and graphics-driver updates appropriate to your hardware. Do not treat an update as a guaranteed frame-rate fix.
Panning or zooming stutters, but the static view looks clear
Repeat the same camera movement in the same scene. If stutter appears only while the map is moving, background processes, thermal throttling or the build’s streaming behavior may be involved. Reduce background load first. If a build offers a frame-rate limit, test it only as an exposed control; no particular cap is documented for this game.

- Return any resolution or scaling change that made text or markers blurry.
- Try a different zoom level and check the same roads, settlements, borders and resources.
- Use an available overlay or map mode to isolate the information you need.
- Adjust the monitor’s brightness or operating-system display scaling only if necessary, remembering that these changes affect other applications too.
Markers disappear against certain terrain
This is a readability failure, not something to solve by blindly lowering every quality option. Capture the affected view and report the terrain, zoom level and missing marker through the developer’s current feedback channel. The developer has explicitly treated cross-terrain marker visibility as a design goal, so a reproducible example is more useful than an assumed graphics preset.
The game does not start or reports an unsupported system
Recheck the platform row: Windows requires a 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 installation, while the listed macOS baseline is Catalina 10.15 with the processor and memory requirements shown above. Confirm that the installation has the listed free storage—1 GB on Windows or 2 GB on macOS—and that broadband internet is available. Because the title is still in development, an access or compatibility issue may also be build-specific; check the current store information before changing system files.
How to compare visual options if the game adds them
No two verified graphics presets or map-style choices are documented yet. If a future build adds them, compare options against the same criteria rather than choosing the most detailed-looking image automatically.

Roman has mentioned that an earlier map style might be retained as an optional setting if enough players request it. That is a possibility, not confirmation that such a switch exists. Do not look for a “retro” or earlier-map option unless the in-game menu or official notes explicitly add one.

- Confusing minimum requirements with a performance guarantee. The published parts list does not state a frame rate at minimum hardware.
- Following a fictional menu walkthrough. Exact graphics, accessibility and display controls have not been documented in the available material.
- Changing several values at once. You lose a reliable comparison and may not be able to undo the cause of a new problem.
- Optimizing for visual richness alone. Texture and atmosphere are secondary if roads, buildings or strategic markers vanish.
- Assuming a developer comment is a shipped feature. Discussion of a possible alternate map style does not establish that the setting is present.
- Judging from one crowded screenshot. Test a repeatable map view and inspect several terrain types before deciding.

When no exposed setting resolves a reproducible problem, document the hardware, build, map location, zoom and symptom for the developer rather than relying on undocumented tweaks.
