The quickest setup for a less nauseating horror game
Open the game’s Accessibility, Camera, Display or Motion Sickness menu before changing a graphics preset. Change controls in this order so you can identify which adjustment helps:

- Disable motion blur. Turn off general blur as well as separate radial, sprint, per-object or weapon-blur options.
- Remove secondary camera movement. Set camera shake, head bob, camera bob, weapon sway, camera roll and forced camera movement to zero or the minimum.
- Adjust FOV gradually. Raise it if the default feels like looking through a tunnel; lower it if a wide view creates a fish-eye sensation. In a third-person game, test a greater follow distance.
- Slow and simplify camera input. Reduce look sensitivity and disable acceleration or smoothing if your view overshoots. Predictable turning is usually more comfortable than fast turning.
- Turn vibration off. If the game separates impact, weapon and scripted-event vibration, disable each one.
- Add a stable reference. Enable a persistent centre dot, reticle or other fixed aiming marker.
- Soften the sound mix. Lower effects separately from ambience, music and dialogue; choose a compressed or night-mode dynamic-range option if offered.
- Make scares easier to anticipate. Turn on subtitles and speaker names, and check Accessibility, Content Warnings and Gameplay menus for visual-hide, filter or scene-skip options.
Play for only a few minutes after each change. Pause as soon as symptoms begin, return to the menu and alter one control at a time. This gives you a usable personal profile instead of changing ten variables without knowing which one mattered.

Motion sickness occurs when visual motion says that your body is moving while your vestibular system says that you are stationary. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 identifies simulated camera movement as a potential source of that conflict and specifically calls out field of view, camera bobbing, motion blur, weapon sway, automatic camera-angle changes, camera shake and camera speed as settings that should be adjustable.

Horror games often combine several of those effects: a sprint blur, a bobbing walk cycle, a sudden camera lurch during a scare and a narrow FOV that magnifies apparent speed. Removing the effects that add no gameplay information is therefore a better first step than simply lowering overall graphics quality. A lower texture preset may improve frame rate, but it does not remove a camera that deliberately rolls or shakes.
Motion blur
Motion blur blends successive frames to imitate a camera exposure. It can hide judder in some games, but it also smears the stable reference your eyes use to judge movement. Disable the main toggle and inspect advanced options for radial blur, sprint blur, per-object blur and cinematic blur. Naughty Dog’s support documentation gives a concrete example: Options > Accessibility > Motion Sickness > Motion Blur. Its documented default value is 10; setting the control to Off removes that effect without changing unrelated graphics settings.
Shake, bob, sway and roll
These effects are separate from blur. Camera shake adds a jolt during impacts, head or camera bob moves the viewpoint with every step, weapon sway moves the held object and camera roll tilts the horizon. Set each to zero or the lowest available value. If a game has a single “camera motion” or “motion sickness” preset, apply it first, then check individual controls because a preset may not cover scripted sequences.

Choosing an FOV that your eyes can tolerate
There is no single best FOV number. A narrow FOV can feel like tunnel vision: turning causes large apparent movement at the edges, and close objects seem to rush toward you. Increasing FOV shows more of the environment and can make ordinary walking feel less constricted. However, an extremely wide value can produce a curved, fish-eye appearance and make the edges appear to move faster.
Change FOV in small increments, then walk, turn and sprint in a familiar room. Keep the setting that lets you read the scene without consciously tracking the screen edges. If symptoms increase after widening the view, undo the last step rather than assuming that “wider is always better.” In third-person games, camera distance is often more useful than FOV: move the follow camera farther away until the character and nearby environment remain visible without filling the screen.

First-person checks
- Test ordinary walking before sprinting; sprint blur and speed can mask whether FOV itself is the problem.
- Look left and right at a fixed object. If the edges smear or bend, reduce the last FOV increase.
- Keep the crosshair or centre dot visible while experimenting so your eyes have a fixed target.
Third-person checks
- Increase follow distance before making a very wide FOV change.
- Disable automatic camera-centering if it repeatedly swings the view after you stop moving.
- Reduce camera lag or smoothing when the camera continues drifting after the character stops.
Making camera control predictable
High sensitivity is not inherently harmful, but rapid overshoot forces repeated corrective movements. Lower horizontal and vertical look sensitivity until a normal stick or mouse movement produces the turn you expect. If the game offers separate aim and look sensitivities, lower both while testing; a very slow aim value combined with a fast look value can still produce uncomfortable transitions.
Turn off acceleration when it makes the camera start slowly and then surge. Disable smoothing if it creates a delayed, floating response. Conversely, if raw input feels jittery, a small amount of smoothing may be preferable. The goal is a camera that stops when your hand or stick stops, with no automatic drift, snap-turn or forced angle change unless you deliberately choose it.
Reducing the intensity of jump scares
Camera settings can reduce visual discomfort, but they cannot remove an event authored to startle you. A jump scare usually combines timing, a sudden image or animation and an audio spike. Treat those as separate controls.
Audio controls
Use individual sliders rather than dropping the master volume to zero. Lower Effects first because the sting, impact or creature cue normally sits there. Reduce music or ambience if a constantly tense bed is exhausting, while keeping dialogue high enough for instructions. If the game offers Dynamic Range, Night Mode, Late Night or a compressed mix, choose it to narrow the gap between quiet exploration and loud stingers. The Resident Evil Resistance manual documents camera speed, FOV, camera-shake, vibration, audio levels, dynamic range, subtitles and brightness controls as separate options.
Subtitles and speaker identification
Enable subtitles and speaker names. They do not eliminate a visual shock, but they make dialogue, warnings and off-screen cues readable without relying on a loud mix. If subtitle size, background opacity or speaker labels are available, increase them enough to remain legible while you keep overall volume lower.

Vibration
Disable controller vibration, especially impact, heartbeat and scripted-event rumble. Vibration can turn a visual surprise into a physical startle and may aggravate nausea even when the camera is steady. If the game has separate vibration categories, turn off event and impact vibration first.
Content warnings and visual hiding
Search the Accessibility, Content Warnings and Gameplay menus for controls that are specific to the title. EA’s official Dead Space article documents a content-warning feature that informs players about sensitive content and can hide selected visuals with a blur while audio continues. That is a concrete example, not a feature every horror game includes. A filter may cover gore but leave a sudden creature reveal intact, so read the description and test it before relying on it.
Some games provide scene skips or visual filters; others provide only warnings. When a hide option is available, check whether it applies to cutscenes, gameplay, both, or only selected categories. If a scene-skip control exists, use it before a known trigger rather than waiting for the sequence to start.
Using difficulty, lighting and pauses to lower fear
When anticipation of death is the main source of stress, a forgiving difficulty can reduce the pressure that makes every doorway feel threatening. Lower difficulty does not necessarily remove scares, but it gives you more time to inspect a room and recover from a mistake.
Use practical environmental changes as well. Xbox Wire’s guide for Resident Evil Requiem recommends playing in daylight or with room lights on, lowering volume, pausing when overwhelmed and choosing the game’s Casual mode. These choices do not alter the game’s authored content; they reduce the sensory and performance pressure around it. A pause is a valid accessibility strategy, not a failure to play correctly.

Game-specific examples
Resident Evil 4
Capcom provides a Motion Sickness accessibility preset in Resident Evil 4, along with additional camera suggestions. Apply the preset, then verify individual blur, shake and camera-motion controls because the exact menu and available options can vary by platform and edition.
The Last of Us Part II
The official accessibility page states that simulated 3D movement can be a source of motion sickness for many players. It documents controls for camera shake, motion blur, camera follow distance and FOV. Start with shake and blur disabled, set a comfortable follow distance, and adjust FOV only after you have tested ordinary movement.
Resident Evil Resistance
The manual documents a broad set of relevant controls: camera speed, FOV, camera shake, vibration, audio levels, dynamic range, subtitles and brightness. This makes it possible to build a targeted profile instead of relying on a single graphics preset: slow camera speed, remove shake and vibration, compress dynamic range, enable subtitles and set brightness so dark areas remain readable without washing out the image.
Dead Space
Dead Space is a documented example of title-specific content warnings that can hide selected sensitive visuals while leaving audio in place. Read the warning descriptions carefully, because hiding an image does not promise that its sound, timing or gameplay consequence will be removed.

- Start in the main menu. Open Accessibility, Camera, Display or Motion Sickness before loading a difficult section.
- Apply the least-motion baseline. Motion blur Off; camera shake, head bob, weapon sway and roll at zero or minimum; vibration Off.
- Set input behavior. Lower look sensitivity, then disable acceleration or smoothing if the view overshoots or drifts.
- Calibrate the view. Adjust FOV in small steps, or move a third-person follow camera farther away. Stop when the image feels natural, not when it reaches a particular number.
- Choose a reference. Turn on a centre dot or reticle and make it large enough to remain visible against dark scenes.
- Build a quieter mix. Lower effects, select compressed dynamic range or night mode, and enable subtitles and speaker names.
- Check scare controls. Review Content Warnings, visual-hide, filters and scene-skip options. Read whether each affects gameplay, cutscenes, audio or only selected images.
- Test safely. Walk for several minutes, pause at the first symptom, and record which single change you are testing. Do not push through nausea to finish a chapter.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you notice | First controls to change | What to test next |
|---|---|---|
| Blur, eye strain or difficulty focusing during turns | Motion blur Off; disable radial, sprint and per-object blur | Lower sensitivity and check whether FOV is too wide |
| Nausea during walking or sprinting | Head bob, camera bob and weapon sway Off; reduce camera speed | Lower sprint effects and try a modest FOV change |
| Disorientation after impacts or scripted events | Camera shake and roll Off; vibration Off | Disable automatic camera-angle changes and use a centre dot |
| Symptoms mainly at the edge of the screen | Undo the last FOV increase or decrease, depending on the distortion | Move a third-person camera farther away and test again |
| Startle response to loud stingers | Lower effects volume; select compressed or night-mode dynamic range | Keep subtitles on and reduce music or ambience separately |
| Fear of entering rooms or losing progress | Choose an easier mode and pause when overwhelmed | Use daylight or room lighting and shorter sessions |
If symptoms continue after camera movement is minimized, stop playing and consider whether the display, frame pacing, room lighting or another source of visual strain is involved. These settings are comfort adjustments, not medical treatment. Persistent or severe symptoms warrant advice from a qualified health professional.

How to compare horror games for accessibility
When choosing a game, do not judge support by a single “motion sickness” label. Check the actual controls and whether they apply during gameplay, cutscenes and scripted events.
| Comparison area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Camera motion | Are blur, shake, bob, sway, roll, camera lag and automatic angle changes independently adjustable? |
| View and distance | Can you change FOV, camera follow distance or both, and is the range broad enough for gradual testing? |
| Stable references | Is there a persistent centre dot, reticle or other fixed marker, including outside combat? |
| Audio and subtitles | Can effects, ambience, music and dialogue be separated? Is dynamic range selectable? Are subtitle size, background and speaker names configurable? |
| Vibration | Can all vibration be disabled, or are impact and scripted-event categories separate? |
| Scare-content controls | Are there content warnings, visual-hide filters or scene skips, and do they cover gameplay as well as cinematics? |
| Difficulty and pausing | Is there a forgiving mode, unrestricted pausing and a way to retry without a long penalty? |
| Platform and version | Does the PC, console or cloud version expose the same menus, and did a patch change the defaults? |
Menus and defaults can differ by platform, edition and update. Confirm the controls in the version you own rather than assuming that a guide for another platform applies unchanged.
What these settings cannot guarantee
No official source establishes a percentage of horror-game players helped by any particular setting, and no combination guarantees that motion sickness or fear will disappear. The available guidance describes design risks and title-specific controls, not a clinical cure. A game may still include a sudden animation, audio spike or forced camera move after every comfort option is disabled.

The practical goal is control: remove avoidable camera motion, make turning predictable, provide a stable visual reference, narrow the loudness gap and give yourself warning or pause options. If a specific title remains intolerable, stopping or choosing a different game is a reasonable accessibility decision.
