Best Settings for NES Emulators: Scaling, Aspect Ratio, Filters, and Save States

For most NES games, start with integer scaling, the emulator’s core-provided aspect ratio, no NTSC filter, no overscan crop, automatic region detection, and ordinary in-game battery saves as your permanent record. Add a CRT or NTSC filter only when you want period-TV character, and use save states as temporary checkpoints rather than your only save.

That profile preserves the NES picture without inventing pixels, keeps timing close to the selected region, and avoids the two most common data mistakes: treating a visual filter as a palette and relying on a state file instead of the cartridge’s normal save.

A reliable starting profile

The best settings depend on whether you want a sharp pixel-art presentation or an image that resembles a 1980s or 1990s television. The following baseline is a safe starting point in RetroArch cores, standalone emulators, and frontends that expose equivalent controls.

Setting Recommended starting value Change it when…
Scaling Integer scaling: 1x, 2x, 3x, or the largest integer that fits You deliberately want a full-screen, non-integer presentation.
Aspect ratio Core Provided in RetroArch; Auto in Nestopia when the region is known from the database You need to force NTSC, PAL, 4:3, or an uncorrected image.
NTSC/CRT filter Off for crisp pixels You want composite-video artifacts, scanline character, or a softer television look.
Palette Use the emulator’s default or a known palette; treat it separately from filtering You are intentionally matching a particular display or color reference.
Overscan No crop Garbage or borders are visible at the edge of the picture.
Region Auto Detection is wrong or you need a specific NTSC, PAL, or Dendy timing.
Saving In-game battery save plus occasional save-state checkpoints You are experimenting, testing a difficult section, or recovering from a mistake.

Save a test game after applying the profile, close the emulator normally, and reopen it before making extensive progress. That simple check confirms that the selected core, game region, save directory, and permissions are working together.

Scaling and pixel geometry

Why integer scaling is the safest default

Integer scaling enlarges every source pixel by the same whole-number factor. At 2x, one NES pixel becomes a 2-by-2 block; at 3x, it becomes a 3-by-3 block. Edges stay regular instead of alternating between different pixel widths.

Choose 1x, 2x, 3x, or the largest integer that fits without cutting off the game area. Integer scaling is especially useful for platform games, text, and status bars, where uneven pixels are easy to notice. It also gives you a stable reference when comparing palettes or filters.

What non-integer scaling changes

Stretching a 256-pixel-wide image to an arbitrary window width forces some source pixels to occupy more screen pixels than others. The result can look slightly soft, uneven, or intermittently sharp. Bilinear filtering can hide the unevenness, but it does so by blending neighboring pixels rather than preserving a one-to-one pixel structure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mesen describes the NES image as almost square when using its default “No Stretching” presentation. Its documentation also warns that non-default stretching can make pixel sizes irregular; filtering and bilinear filtering reduce the visibility of that effect but do not restore integer geometry.

FCEUX scaler choices

FCEUX documents several distinct approaches:

  • Integral scaling: enlarges by whole-number factors and preserves regular pixel blocks.
  • Scale2x and Scale3x: enlarge pixel corners to make diagonal edges appear less jagged while retaining a pixel-art character.
  • HQ2x and HQ3x: use smoother blended enlargement. They require more CPU than the simpler scalers.
  • Stretch-to-fill: uses the available display area but can produce uneven geometry and may be a poor choice when accurate pixels matter.

Use Scale2x or Scale3x when you want a deliberately processed pixel-art look. Use HQ2x or HQ3x on hardware with enough headroom when softness is acceptable. Otherwise, integral scaling is the least surprising choice.

4:3, 8:7, and uncorrected NES output

What the two ratios represent

The NES renders a 256-by-240 base image. That raster is 256/240, or about 1.067:1, commonly described as approximately 8:7. Original consumer CRT televisions displayed the image inside a wider 4:3 picture, so the visible game image was horizontally expanded by the display rather than by the NES’s internal pixel grid.

Neither choice is universally correct. An 8:7-style or uncorrected presentation keeps the source geometry close to the emulator’s internal raster. A 4:3 presentation imitates the shape most players saw on a standard-definition television. Some games were authored with that television stretch in mind, so circles, character proportions, and title screens can look more familiar at 4:3.

RetroArch with the Nestopia core

Set the frontend’s aspect-ratio control to Core Provided. In Nestopia’s core options, leave Preferred Aspect Ratio on Auto when you want database-based detection, or choose NTSC or PAL when the cartridge region is known. Nestopia also exposes 4:3 and Uncorrected choices for users who want to override the automatic result.

Core Provided is preferable to a global forced ratio because the core can communicate the geometry it expects for the selected game and region. A forced 4:3 setting is useful when you are intentionally standardizing a television-style setup, while Uncorrected is useful for examining the raw raster.

Mesen’s geometry options

Mesen labels its near-square default as No Stretching. Select it when exact source geometry and integer scaling are your priorities. Select a stretched presentation when you are matching a CRT-shaped display or prefer the proportions of original television footage. If the stretched image shows alternating thick and thin pixel columns, try an integer-friendly window size or a mild filter instead of continuing to increase the stretch.

Choosing without second-guessing

  • Choose Uncorrected or No Stretching for pixel-art analysis, sprite work, and a source-faithful raster.
  • Choose 4:3 or a core-provided television correction for the look most people associate with a living-room CRT.
  • Do not judge aspect ratio through a heavy CRT shader alone; the shader can soften or bend the image and make geometry harder to evaluate.

Filters, shaders, and palettes

Start with filtering disabled for sharp pixels

With the NTSC or Blargg filter disabled, edges remain hard and the original color blocks are easy to inspect. This is the best baseline for troubleshooting, reading small text, and deciding whether a geometry problem is caused by scaling rather than image processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What an NTSC-style filter adds

An NTSC filter simulates parts of the composite-video path: color blending, dot crawl, chroma bleed, and other display artifacts, depending on the implementation. A CRT shader may additionally model scanlines, curvature, phosphor behavior, or beam-like softness. These effects can make dithering and deliberate color mixing resemble the way they appeared on a television, but they also reduce edge clarity and consume processing time.

Nestopia exposes Composite Video, S-Video, RGB SCART, and Monochrome filter choices. Mesen exposes Blargg and Bisqwit variants. Mesen’s documentation notes that Blargg filters are fast, while Bisqwit filters are slower, so the latter may need more performance headroom at high output resolutions.

Palette and filter are different controls

A palette changes how the emulator interprets the NES color values. A filter changes how those colors are processed for display. Changing the palette can make the whole image warmer, cooler, darker, or more saturated without adding composite artifacts. Enabling an NTSC filter can blend colors and soften edges while leaving the underlying palette choice unchanged.

Nestopia and Mesen include built-in palettes and support custom palette files. Change one variable at a time: first choose a palette, then enable or disable the filter. Otherwise, a color change can be mistaken for a filter effect.

Three practical visual profiles

Goal Scaling and ratio Filter Palette approach
Clean pixel art Integer scaling; Core Provided or Uncorrected Off Default or a documented custom palette
Period composite television Integer scaling where possible; 4:3 or core-provided correction Composite Video or a CRT shader Keep the palette stable while tuning the filter
Sharper RGB-era presentation Integer scaling; 4:3 if that matches your display goal RGB SCART or a light shader Use a neutral or known palette

Overscan: how much of the frame to crop

Begin with no crop. The NES output includes edge areas that a standard-definition CRT and its bezel might have hidden, but cropping them by default can remove legitimate status-bar pixels, borders, or debugging information.

Nestopia provides top, bottom, left, and right masks. These correspond to areas that a conventional CRT bezel could conceal. Mesen offers vertical 8-pixel and 16-pixel overscan choices. Use the smallest mask that removes visible garbage or a distracting border; do not crop simply because a game has a black edge.

  1. Disable all overscan masks.
  2. Look for unstable pixels, garbage tiles, or a border that would clearly have been outside a television’s visible area.
  3. Apply the smallest top, bottom, left, or right mask that hides that material.
  4. Check title screens, pause screens, and games with information at the bottom edge before keeping the crop.

Region, timing, and speed

NTSC, PAL, and Dendy are not just video shapes

Region selection changes timing as well as the nominal picture format. Nestopia documents core-provided timing of 60.098814 frames per second for NTSC and 50.006979 frames per second for PAL/Dendy, with a 48,000 Hz audio sample rate. Mesen documents 60 FPS for NTSC and 50 FPS for PAL/Dendy.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Leave Mesen’s region on Auto unless detection is wrong. It falls back to NTSC when there is no PAL indication and also offers explicit PAL, NTSC, and Dendy choices. Nestopia exposes favored and forced system choices. Force a region only when you know the cartridge’s region or are intentionally testing regional timing; otherwise, an incorrect choice can alter game speed, music pitch, or timing-sensitive behavior.

Overclocking is a troubleshooting tool, not a quality setting

Mesen includes optional overclocking to address specific slowdown behavior. Its documentation warns that some games can develop issues, so enable it only for a known problem and disable it if glitches appear. Batocera’s FCEUmm guidance is even more direct: overclocking can cause glitches, crashes, or save-data erasure. Original NES behavior, including the eight-sprites-per-scanline limit, is part of what produces flicker; removing that limit can change the game rather than merely making it smoother.

Save states and durable game saves

Use each save mechanism for a different job

An in-game battery save records the game’s own progress system and should be treated as the durable master copy. A save state captures the emulator’s current machine state, including the exact moment, menu position, and transient memory conditions. States are excellent for retrying a difficult jump, testing a setting, or pausing a game that has no battery save, but they are not a substitute for completing the game’s normal save procedure.

Nestopia supports both mechanisms, rewind, and multiple state slots. Its documented file conventions are cartridge saves as .srm and save states as .state#, where the number identifies the slot.

A safe save routine

  1. Make an in-game battery save at a known checkpoint whenever the game supports one.
  2. Wait for the emulator to finish writing, then exit normally rather than killing the process.
  3. Use a state for a temporary checkpoint only after the battery save is secure.
  4. Periodically copy the game’s .srm file and any important .state# files to a separate backup location.
  5. Before changing emulator cores, ROM filenames, save directories, or FDS options, confirm that the backup opens on the intended setup.

Famicom Disk System caution

Nestopia documents a warning for FDS save-format changes: changing the format can overwrite or delete existing saves. Back up the relevant save files before changing that option, and do not treat a newly created state as proof that the underlying disk save is safe.

Why states may not be portable

A state depends on the emulator core, game image, region, timing, and sometimes the exact version of the emulator. A normal cartridge save is the more durable record because it represents the game’s own saved data rather than a snapshot of the emulator’s internal machine. Keep states for convenience and experimentation; keep battery saves for long-term progress.

Emulator-specific setup guidance

RetroArch with Nestopia

  1. Set the frontend aspect-ratio mode to Core Provided.
  2. In Nestopia’s core options, leave Preferred Aspect Ratio on Auto, or choose NTSC/PAL when the region is known.
  3. Select integer scaling in the frontend if the available display area permits it.
  4. Leave the NTSC filter off for a crisp image, or choose Composite Video, S-Video, RGB SCART, or Monochrome for a deliberate display character.
  5. Keep overscan masks disabled until you have identified visible edge garbage.
  6. Verify both the .srm battery-save file and the numbered .state# files in your configured save directory.

Nestopia is designed for cycle-accurate NES/Famicom emulation and supports saves, states, and rewind. Its documented NTSC and PAL/Dendy timing values make region selection important when you are matching original speed.

RetroArch with Mesen

  1. Choose No Stretching for a near-source geometry, or a stretched presentation when you are deliberately imitating a CRT.
  2. Use integer scaling where possible; if you stretch, inspect diagonal edges and text for irregular pixel widths.
  3. Leave region on Auto unless detection fails, then select NTSC, PAL, or Dendy explicitly.
  4. Choose a palette independently from the NTSC filter.
  5. Try a fast Blargg filter before a slower Bisqwit variant if performance is limited.
  6. Use 8-pixel or 16-pixel vertical overscan only when the edge content is genuinely unwanted.
  7. Enable overclocking only to address a specific slowdown and turn it off at the first sign of glitches.

Mesen’s documented base geometry is 256 by 240 pixels. Its core-provided timing is 60 FPS for NTSC and 50 FPS for PAL/Dendy.

FCEUX

For a sharp setup, select an integral scaling factor and enable aspect-ratio correction according to whether you want the source-like image or a television-shaped presentation. Scale2x and Scale3x are useful when you want enlarged pixel corners; HQ2x and HQ3x produce a smoother blend and require more CPU. Treat stretch-to-fill as a convenience option rather than an accuracy default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Batocera with FCEUmm

When a Batocera shader preset is active, its guide recommends leaving the built-in FCEUmm NTSC filter off so two display-processing stages are not stacked unintentionally. Preserve the original eight-sprites-per-scanline behavior unless you have a specific reason to alter it, and avoid overclocking because the guide warns of glitches, crashes, and possible save-data erasure.

Performance and troubleshooting

The picture is blurry

  • Disable bilinear filtering and the NTSC/CRT filter.
  • Switch to integer scaling.
  • Try a smaller output resolution or a faster scaler.
  • Check that a frontend shader and a core filter are not both processing the image.

The picture is too wide or too narrow

  • In RetroArch/Nestopia, test Core Provided, then Auto, NTSC, PAL, 4:3, and Uncorrected deliberately rather than changing several controls at once.
  • In Mesen, compare No Stretching with the chosen stretched mode.
  • Confirm the game’s region before judging its proportions, because PAL and NTSC selections can change both timing and presentation.

Edges contain garbage or distracting borders

  • Return to no overscan first and confirm that the material is not part of the game’s intended interface.
  • Apply only the smallest Nestopia edge mask or Mesen vertical overscan option that removes the problem.
  • Recheck games with bottom-edge status bars and title screens.

Games run at the wrong speed

  • Set the region to Auto or the cartridge’s known region.
  • Remove overclocking.
  • Check whether a PAL game is being forced to NTSC or vice versa.
  • Use the emulator’s documented timing rather than changing video speed to compensate for a region mistake.

A save disappeared

  • Stop changing settings and make a copy of the entire save directory.
  • Look for the expected .srm file and confirm that the game filename and region match.
  • Do not change FDS save-format settings until the existing files are backed up.
  • Try the in-game load function before restoring a state, since a state may represent an older moment.

Which configuration should you choose?

Your priority Recommended configuration Main trade-off
Most regular pixels Integer scaling, Uncorrected or No Stretching, filters off The image may not fill a widescreen display.
CRT-like proportions 4:3 or core-provided correction, integer scaling where possible, light CRT or composite processing Pixels are no longer equally sharp, and filters use more processing.
Authentic regional timing Auto detection, or explicit NTSC/PAL/Dendy when verified Different regions can run at different frame rates and audio timing.
Fast hardware or low-power device Filters off or a fast Blargg option, integral scaling Less television-style softness and artifacting.
Experimentation and challenge practice Normal in-game saves plus numbered save states States are convenient but tied more closely to the emulator setup.

If you are unsure, keep the baseline profile for a few games before customizing it. Change one setting at a time, retain a normal in-game save, and judge geometry, timing, and filtering as separate decisions. That approach gives you a reproducible setup instead of a collection of effects whose individual impact is unclear.
