Start with HD or HD 256 for books, articles, and detailed still images; use Regal when ghosting is distracting; choose Normal for mixed reading and scrolling; and reserve Extreme for situations where speed matters more than fine detail. Then set brightness for the room, raise contrast only until text separates cleanly from the background, and add just enough saturation to make illustrations readable. These are practical starting points, not universal calibration values: refresh labels, slider ranges, and image-processing options vary by device, firmware, application, and lighting.
Quick starting settings by content
| Content | Starting refresh mode | Display controls | What you are prioritizing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Novels, articles, PDFs, and office text | HD or HD 256 | Moderate dark enhancement; saturation near its default; brightness matched to the room | Sharp character edges and a clean background |
| Comics, magazines, and illustrated books | Regal, or HD with image smoothing when available | Increase vividness gradually; use contrast only until lettering is clear | Smoother gradients with fewer trails |
| Web pages and rapid scrolling | Normal, then Extreme if the page still feels too slow | Accept some detail loss; schedule periodic full refreshes | Page-turn and scroll speed |
| Photos and detailed still images | HD, HD 256, or Regal | Enable image smoothing where supported; set brightness before increasing saturation | Fine detail and less mottled color |
Check the result at the size and lighting you actually use. A mode that looks excellent on a static sample page can leave visible residue during a fast news feed, while a fast mode can make small type and subtle color differences harder to distinguish.

What the refresh modes actually change
A color E Ink refresh mode is a preset for how aggressively the display drives its particles between frames. Faster transitions generally show more residual image information; cleaner transitions take longer and may flash more often. The names are not industry-wide standards, so compare behavior on your own model rather than assuming that two devices with an identical label are equivalent.
HD and HD 256
The GuoYue V6 Color manual describes HD as a clear general-reading mode and HD 256 as clearer for images and text. Use either when you are reading fixed pages, inspecting diagrams, or viewing a still photograph. HD 256 is the better first trial when small text and fine image detail matter more than rapid animation.

Regal
Regal is described in the same manual as the least-ghosting option, producing clearer text and images when residue is the main problem. It is a useful choice for comics with repeated page turns, scanned documents, and any application where a previous page remains visibly overlaid. The trade-off is a less immediate-feeling transition than Normal or Extreme.
Normal
Normal is a compromise for mixed use. It is slightly faster than the quality-oriented modes while retaining more detail than Extreme. Start here for web pages, email, and documents that alternate between text and modest amounts of graphics.
Extreme
Extreme favors speed and can lose some detail. It is appropriate for rapid scrolling, animated interface elements, or a moment when responsiveness matters more than clean gradients. If letters look broken or a photo loses important edges, move back to Normal or HD rather than trying to repair the image with saturation.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Full-refresh frequency
The GuoYue/Bigme manual exposes a full-refresh frequency based on a chosen number of operations. In practice, an operation is a page update or similar screen change counted by that firmware. A lower interval clears residue sooner but introduces more full-screen flashes; a higher interval feels less interrupted but allows more ghosting to accumulate. Start with the device default, then lower the count if trails become distracting during your most demanding reading.

How to set contrast, saturation, and brightness
Color controls solve different problems. BOOX documentation labels them Color Contrast (dark-color enhancement), Color Saturation (vividness or vibration enhancement), and Color Brightness. GuoYue/Bigme documentation similarly lists Dark Enhancement, Vivid Enhancement, Color Brightness, and a third-party-app Contrast Setting. Adjust them in that order so one control does not hide a problem caused by another.
1. Set brightness for the environment
Choose brightness while holding the device in the room where you read. A very bright setting can make the background look gray and can tempt you to overdrive contrast; a very low setting can make colors appear dull even when the color processing is adequate. Brightness is a viewing-level adjustment, not a substitute for correcting weak text.
2. Raise contrast until text separates
Increase dark enhancement in small steps while looking at thin fonts, punctuation, and light-weight headings. Stop as soon as the strokes become distinct from the background. Excessive dark enhancement can fill counters in letters, make fine lines look heavy, and turn a subtle illustration into a patchwork of dark areas.
3. Add only the saturation you need
Increase vividness or saturation gradually on a page containing both muted and strong colors. Stop when pale labels, skin tones, or light chart areas become distinguishable. Pushing saturation further cannot create missing color information; it can instead clip gradients and make neighboring shades look identical.

4. Check application-specific contrast
Some firmware separates the system Display Control sliders from a third-party-app Contrast Setting. If an app still looks washed out after the system controls are set, inspect that app or the device’s per-app panel rather than raising global contrast again. The available labels and locations depend on the model and firmware.
BOOX controls and important limitations
BOOX’s EinkWise documentation describes an interface for switching refresh modes and adjusting color mode, layout, and contrast. Image smoothing is available in HD and Regal modes for image-heavy content when the model and firmware expose it. Turn it on for photographs, shaded drawings, or scanned pages, then compare a page with small text: smoothing can improve gradients while slightly changing edge crispness.
High Contrast Mode is intended to sharpen app displays, according to BOOX support documentation. It is available only on some models and does not work with HD mode. If the option is missing, disabled, or has no effect in HD, that is an implementation limitation rather than a failed calibration. Try Normal, Regal, or another supported mode before changing multiple sliders.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Reducing ghosting without ruining color
Ghosting is a technology trade-off rather than a defect unique to one application. BOOX’s Nova3 Color product article notes that ghosting can be especially severe on color E Ink and describes a deep-refresh mode in NeoReader. A deep or full refresh drives a more complete transition, clearing trails at the cost of a visible flash and a slower page change.

Use a targeted refresh strategy
- Use HD, HD 256, or Regal when you are examining a static page and want the cleanest detail.
- Use Normal for ordinary mixed reading and scrolling.
- Switch to Extreme only for speed-critical interaction.
- Trigger a deep or full refresh when a previous page remains obvious, especially after several rapid page turns or a high-contrast graphic.
- Adjust the automatic full-refresh count downward if residue returns before your normal reading break; increase it if flashes interrupt you more than ghosting does.
Do not use saturation to mask ghosting. A brighter color may draw attention away from a trail temporarily, but it does not remove the residual particles. A cleaner mode or a full refresh addresses the cause.
Recipes for common reading situations
Long-form black-and-white reading
Begin in HD or HD 256 with saturation at its default. Set brightness for the room, then apply modest dark enhancement until punctuation and thin strokes are clear. If a page-turn trail is visible, try Regal before increasing contrast. A periodic full refresh is preferable to running every page in a flashing deep-refresh mode.
Comics and illustrated books
Regal is a sensible first choice when panels leave residue. If the device offers image smoothing in HD or Regal, test it on a page with both speech bubbles and gradients. Increase vividness in small increments; use dark enhancement only to clarify lettering, because too much can close the spaces inside bold comic fonts.

News sites and long web pages
Start in Normal. If scrolling still feels laggy and the loss of detail is acceptable, test Extreme. Keep a full-refresh interval short enough that text trails do not merge into a gray band. When a page contains photographs or small charts, return to Normal or HD for inspection rather than judging those elements in Extreme.

Photos, maps, and diagrams
Use HD, HD 256, or Regal and allow the page to settle before evaluating it. Brightness should be correct first; otherwise you may mistake a dim screen for weak saturation. Image smoothing can help large gradients where supported. Compare light and dark regions separately, since one global contrast setting may improve labels while flattening shaded areas.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A repeatable calibration workflow
Because no manufacturer documentation in this guide establishes a universal slider percentage or colorimeter target, use a controlled visual workflow and record what works for your device.
- Record the setup. Note the model, firmware version, reading app, refresh mode, front-light level, and room lighting. The same named mode can behave differently across ecosystems.
- Choose representative pages. Keep one page of small text, one illustration with gradients, one photograph, and one page you scroll repeatedly.
- Set brightness. Adjust it under normal reading conditions before touching contrast or saturation.
- Select the quality baseline. Use HD or HD 256 for the first comparison. If ghosting dominates, use Regal instead.
- Set dark enhancement. Raise it only until text is comfortably distinct; inspect counters in letters for signs of crushing.
- Set vividness. Increase saturation until muted illustrations are readable, then stop before gradients band or skin tones look unnaturally intense.
- Test movement. Scroll the web page or turn several illustrated pages. Compare Normal and Extreme for speed, then return to the fastest mode that preserves the detail you need.
- Set full-refresh behavior. Keep the default operation count initially. Change it only after observing how many page updates pass before trails become distracting.
- Check app overrides. Look for a per-app contrast control, image-smoothing switch, or deep-refresh command. If your firmware offers profiles, save separate text and comics settings rather than compromising one for both.
Technology limits behind the settings
Color E Ink is not a self-emissive phone or tablet panel. Color filters, ink movement, and waveform choices constrain both color richness and transition speed. The figures below describe particular technologies or manufacturer statements, not a promise that every color E Ink model will match them.
| Figure | What it describes | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 4,096 colors | Kaleido Plus on the BOOX Nova3 Color | BOOX statement from 2021 |
| Up to three times better color rendering | Kaleido Plus compared with the earlier Kaleido | BOOX statement from 2021; not a cross-device benchmark |
| 120-degree viewing angle | Revised filter and ink-layer spacing on that Kaleido Plus implementation | BOOX statement from 2021 |
| 500 ms fast, 750–1,000 ms standard, 1,500 ms optimal color refresh | Gallery 3 operating modes | E Ink technical material from 2022; illustrates speed-versus-quality choices |
| 40% color-contrast improvement | Gallery Plus compared with the original Gallery | E Ink technical material from 2022 |
These specifications explain why a mode optimized for a quick interface may not be the best mode for a detailed illustration. They do not establish a universal best setting, and they should not be used to infer the performance of a different panel generation.
How to compare two modes or devices fairly
When you compare settings, hold the content and conditions constant. Record the model and firmware, the application, the front-light level, and the ambient light. Evaluate each option on four axes:
- Text and image detail: Are small characters, thin lines, and gradients preserved?
- Ghosting and full-refresh frequency: How many updates can you make before residue becomes distracting, and how disruptive are the flashes?
- Page-turn or scroll speed: Does the transition keep up with your reading or browsing?
- Color vividness and brightness: Are muted elements visible without clipping stronger colors?
Use the same page sequence for every mode and allow each page to finish refreshing before judging color. A quick glance during a partial transition can make a slower, cleaner mode appear worse than it is.
Troubleshooting washed-out color, dark text, and trails
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Text looks gray or weak | Insufficient dark enhancement, low brightness, or a speed-oriented mode | Set brightness for the room, raise contrast modestly, then test HD or HD 256 |
| Colors look flat | Saturation is near minimum, brightness is too low, or the source image has limited color information | Correct brightness first; add vividness gradually; do not expect saturation to create missing shades |
| Colors look harsh or gradients break up | Too much vividness or dark enhancement | Reduce both controls in small steps and reassess a light-colored illustration |
| A previous page remains visible | Ghosting from a fast mode or too many updates between full refreshes | Switch to Regal or HD, trigger a deep refresh, or lower the automatic refresh interval |
| Scrolling is clean but too slow | A quality-oriented mode is being used for motion | Try Normal, then Extreme if detail loss is acceptable |
| High Contrast Mode cannot be enabled | The model does not support it, or HD mode is selected | Check the firmware’s supported modes and test a non-HD mode |
| Image smoothing is missing | The firmware or model does not expose it, or the selected mode is unsupported | Check HD and Regal options; if unavailable, compare the modes without smoothing |
Bottom line
Use HD or HD 256 as the detail baseline, Regal to control ghosting, Normal for balanced browsing, and Extreme only when speed outweighs fidelity. Tune brightness first, contrast second, and saturation last. Because color E Ink implementations differ, the most reliable setting is the one that preserves the detail your content needs while keeping ghosting and refresh interruptions within your tolerance.
