Best Settings for Building, Testing, and Publishing Levels in MR. RECORDS

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

The most reliable MR. RECORDS levels start with synchronization, not decoration. Choose the music source, set the track’s tempo and first-beat offset, then tune scroll speed and volume through repeated playtests. Add notes, obstacles and effects in short musical phrases, test the hardest transitions with the intended controller, and export the finished record as a ZIP from the editor’s Share command.

The Music Level Editor is currently available in the updated free Steam demo for PC. The full game is planned for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, but its release date has not been announced.

What the MR. RECORDS editor can do

MR. RECORDS includes a built-in Level Editor for creating rhythm stages around music. You can add your own track on PC, generate gameplay, place notes and obstacles, add effects, alter visual assets, and share a finished level with other players. The editor works on a music timeline, so every gameplay decision is made in relation to the song rather than on a separate abstract grid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The editor is opened from the main menu beside the story Play option. In the record editor, the first icon starts a new level from scratch or imports a level file. Once a record is open, you choose between a custom audio file and the game’s own soundtrack.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black | Console-like layout, 4-switch D-pad
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Two ways to provide music

Option What it does When to use it
Import Music Loads your own audio and exposes tempo, first-beat offset, scroll speed and music volume. Use this for a custom song or a track that is not part of the game soundtrack.
Use Game Music Builds the level around music already supplied by the game. Use this when you want a stage that can be created without managing an external audio file.

On PC, the current editor supports personal music. The official material does not establish a universal file-format list, maximum track length or automatic copyright clearance. Only use audio you have permission to distribute, and keep a copy of the source file with your project so you can rebuild the level if you move it to another computer.

The settings that determine whether a level feels good

Four exposed controls have the greatest effect on playability. They do different jobs, so changing one to compensate for another usually creates a new problem. Establish tempo and first-beat offset first; tune scroll speed and volume only after the timeline is landing correctly.

Tempo: the song’s timing grid

Tempo determines how quickly beats advance through the timeline. If it is wrong, a pattern can appear correct at the beginning and drift away from the music later. A tempo error cannot be fixed reliably by moving a few notes: the entire beat grid is moving at the wrong rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enter the tempo that matches the track’s actual beat structure, then test a section near the beginning and another later in the song. Listen for whether notes continue to land on the same musical pulses. If the opening is aligned but later phrases gradually slide early or late, revisit tempo before changing individual objects.

The editor does not publish a universal BPM recommendation. Treat the value as a property of the selected song, not a difficulty setting. A faster song may still support a readable level if the patterns are spaced sensibly, while a slow song can become difficult when too many actions are packed into one phrase.

First-beat offset: where beat one starts

First-beat offset places the beginning of the gameplay grid against the audio. It answers “which moment in the file is beat one?” rather than “how fast are the beats?” A wrong offset shifts the whole chart by a consistent amount: the notes may be evenly spaced, but they arrive before or after the musical accents.

Set the offset before building dense patterns. Find a clear downbeat or other unambiguous musical entrance, place the first gameplay event on that beat, and play from the beginning. If every note is early or every note is late by roughly the same amount, adjust offset instead of altering tempo or dragging each note.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no published latency benchmark or official offset value. Your audio output, input device and personal timing can affect what feels exact, so use the first note and a later phrase as checks rather than assuming a number from another song will transfer.

Scroll speed: information the player can actually read

Scroll speed controls how much warning a player receives before a note or obstacle reaches its action point. The editor exposes the setting but does not publish a best number. Select it by observing a first-time player, or by deliberately playing without memorizing the chart.

  • Lower the speed when visual information arrives too late for a player to identify the object, choose an input and react.
  • Raise it only when patterns feel cramped or when a player can comfortably see several upcoming events and the stage needs more visual separation.
  • Recheck speed after adding obstacles or effects; a pattern that was readable with notes alone can become confusing when its silhouette changes.
  • Keep one speed for a coherent section unless a deliberate change communicates a new phase. Unannounced changes can feel like a timing error.

Scroll speed is a readability variable, not a substitute for reducing excessive density. If a phrase still requires memorization at a comfortable speed, remove or relocate objects rather than continually slowing the chart.

Music volume: preserve timing cues

Music volume should make the track clear while leaving timing feedback and effects audible. The editor confirms that volume can be adjusted but gives no default value. Set it while listening to the complete mix, not while the song is playing alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Lower the music when hit sounds, obstacle warnings or other gameplay feedback disappear beneath the track.
  • Raise it when the beat is difficult to follow and effects are already distinct.
  • Check a quiet passage and the loudest passage; a setting that works in one may overwhelm the other.
  • Ask another player to try the section, because the creator often compensates for a mix after hearing it repeatedly.

A dependable level-building workflow

Build in short, representative sections. This exposes timing and readability errors before you have invested in a full song.

  1. Create or import the record. From the main menu, open the record editor and select the first icon. Choose a new level or import an existing level file.
  2. Choose the music source. Select Import Music for a personal track or Use Game Music for a supplied song. If you import audio, keep the original file available for future edits.
  3. Establish tempo. Identify the song’s beat structure and enter the matching tempo. Do not place a large pattern until a later test phrase confirms that the grid is not drifting.
  4. Set first-beat offset. Align beat one with a clear musical event. Play from the beginning and correct a uniform early or late arrival here.
  5. Choose an initial scroll speed. Start with enough preview time to identify a note or obstacle and decide on an input. Treat this as a test value; there is no official universal setting.
  6. Balance music volume. Make the track audible without masking gameplay feedback. Recheck the balance after effects are added.
  7. Map the basic phrase. Add a small number of notes that express the main rhythm. Play the phrase immediately instead of waiting until the whole song is populated.
  8. Add obstacles and effects. Introduce them where the music or intended movement supports them. Play after each meaningful change so a visual or timing problem is easy to identify.
  9. Expand phrase by phrase. Increase density only after the underlying beat alignment is reliable. Build transitions deliberately rather than filling every available beat.
  10. Customize the presentation. Adjust assets, colors, animations and backgrounds to signal sections or difficulty. Keep high-contrast changes for meaningful moments and preserve clear silhouettes around hazards.
  11. Run a full validation pass. Play from the start, then jump directly to the hardest transition. Test with the controller or other input method intended for players.
  12. Save a clean shareable version. Remove abandoned experiments, verify the title and description you want recipients to see, and export only after the final playtest succeeds.

How to design readable patterns

Start with musical phrases

A phrase gives the player a recoverable unit of play. Establish the primary beat with a simple pattern, then add variation on a later phrase. This makes the chart teach its movement language before demanding precision.

Use pauses as intentionally as notes. A short gap lets players process a visual change, reposition, or prepare for an obstacle. Constant activity can make a chart harder without making it more expressive.

Increase challenge through one change at a time

When a section needs to become harder, first decide whether the change is timing, density, movement or visual pressure. Raising several at once makes failures difficult to diagnose. For example, keep scroll speed stable while adding an obstacle, then test; do not simultaneously accelerate the chart, increase density and obscure the background.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use visual customization as information

The editor allows customization of assets, colors, animations and backgrounds. Treat those tools as communication rather than decoration. A restrained palette can mark a safe build-up, while a clear contrast can announce a demanding section. Avoid animated backgrounds or effects that compete with the outline of an incoming hazard.

Playtesting checklist before you publish

There is no official pass/fail score or automated validation checklist. Use the following manual checks and record the result for each major section.

  • Opening alignment: Play from the beginning and confirm the first note lands on the intended beat. If it does not, adjust first-beat offset before touching individual notes.
  • Long-range stability: Test a later phrase. Consistent drift points to tempo; a constant shift points to offset.
  • Hardest transition: Start immediately before the densest or most visually complex change. This reveals whether the player receives enough warning.
  • Reaction time: Watch for obstacles that arrive faster than the selected scroll speed allows a reasonable response.
  • Input method: Replay at least once with the controller if that is the intended method. Steam lists “Controller recommended” for the PC version.
  • Audio balance: Confirm that music, effects and timing feedback remain distinguishable in both quiet and loud passages.
  • Visual contrast: Check that notes and obstacles remain recognizable against every background and animation state.
  • Recovery: After a mistake, determine whether the next phrase gives the player a fair chance to re-enter the rhythm rather than creating an unavoidable cascade of failures.

Troubleshooting common timing and readability problems

Everything is evenly early or late

This is an offset problem. Return to the first-beat offset and move the grid until the opening event matches the intended musical accent. Do not change tempo unless the amount of error grows or shrinks over time.

The opening works but the chart drifts later

Check tempo. A mismatch causes the timeline and audio to separate progressively. Reconfirm the song’s beat structure, then retest both an early and a late phrase before rebuilding patterns.

Players miss objects they can technically reach

Lower density or adjust scroll speed to provide earlier information. Inspect the background and effects for contrast problems, and make sure an obstacle is not introduced at the same instant as an unrelated visual change.

The level feels empty after reducing difficulty

Use musical rests, a clear lead-in and modest effects to create shape without adding unavoidable actions. Difficulty comes from meaningful decisions, not from filling every beat.

The song overwhelms gameplay feedback

Reduce music volume, then verify that the important effects are still audible. If the mix remains crowded, simplify the effect pattern or reserve the loudest musical passages for less mechanically dense sections.

A visual effect hides the hazard

Change the effect, color or background rather than asking the player to memorize the location. Keep high-contrast visual changes tied to structure and leave the action area uncluttered.

Axis Question to ask Evidence to record
Beat alignment Do events stay on the intended beats from the opening through a later phrase? First-note accuracy, offset consistency and any progressive drift.
Readability Can a player identify and react to each event in time? Scroll speed, preview distance, contrast and obstacle visibility.
Challenge density Does each phrase contain a deliberate amount of action? Notes and obstacles per phrase, rests and the difficulty of transitions.
Audio balance Can the player hear the song and gameplay feedback together? Music volume, effect audibility and loud-versus-quiet passage behavior.
Sharing readiness Can another player receive and understand the build? Successful ZIP export, a clear title and description, and a tested file.

Publishing and sharing a finished level

In the current demo, sharing is a file-export workflow rather than a confirmed built-in marketplace upload.

  1. Select the completed record in the editor. Make sure you are exporting the tested version, not an earlier draft.
  2. Scroll to Share. Use the Share command to export the level as a ZIP file.
  3. Keep the ZIP unchanged. Renaming it for organization is reasonable, but do not open, remove or rewrite internal files unless the game’s documentation specifically instructs you to do so.
  4. Send the file to recipients. The official FAQ describes sending the ZIP to other players. Include the level name, music source, any timing notes and the editor/demo version used to create it.
  5. Use the official MR. RECORDS Discord for discovery and discussion. Wired Productions directs creators there to find, play and discuss custom levels. Follow that community’s current file-sharing rules when posting.

No current official documentation confirms a Steam Workshop upload button for MR. RECORDS. Do not describe Workshop publishing as available; use the ZIP-and-community workflow unless the game later adds a documented alternative.

Current availability and PC requirements

The Music Level Editor went live in the updated free Steam demo on 15 October 2026. The full game is planned for Windows PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Steam currently lists the full release date as “To be announced,” so console editor availability should be treated as planned rather than available today.

The game is developed by Glee-Cheese Studio and published by Wired Productions. The Steam listing also describes more than 40 handcrafted levels; that figure describes the supplied game content, not a limit on the number of community levels you can create.

A compact pre-share checklist

  • Music source selected and the original custom audio retained when applicable.
  • Tempo checked in both an opening and a later phrase.
  • First-beat offset verified from the beginning.
  • Scroll speed tested by someone who does not know the chart.
  • Music volume leaves timing feedback and effects audible.
  • Notes, obstacles and effects are readable against every background.
  • Hard transitions tested from just before the transition, not only from a restart.
  • Controller playtest completed when controller input is the target.
  • ZIP exported through Share and opened or imported successfully by a second player when possible.
  • Level name, music information and version details prepared for the recipient or community post.

What “best settings” means in practice

MR. RECORDS does not publish one ideal number for tempo, first-beat offset, scroll speed or volume. Tempo and offset are song-specific synchronization values; scroll speed and volume are player-facing tuning choices. The best build is the one that stays aligned from start to finish, gives enough visual warning, preserves audio cues and communicates its difficulty through deliberate patterns and contrast.

Use the editor’s immediate playtest loop as part of creation, not as a final ceremony: set the timing, build a phrase, play it, correct one variable, and test again. Once the complete record survives the opening, the hardest transition and a controller replay, export it as a ZIP and share that tested build through the current community workflow.
