Best Settings for a 240Hz IPS Gaming Monitor: A Practical Setup Guide

For a 240Hz IPS gaming monitor, the best starting point is its native resolution, its maximum supported refresh rate, and a moderate overdrive setting. Then enable Adaptive-Sync if you want variable refresh and your monitor and graphics card support it. There is no universal brightness, color, or overdrive preset: tune those controls for your specific display, room, and games.

Set up the monitor in the right order

  1. Check the connection and supported mode. Use an input and cable supported by both the monitor and graphics card for your intended resolution and refresh rate. If 240Hz is unavailable, verify the selected input, monitor-menu settings, GPU output, cable capability, and operating-system display mode before replacing a cable. Check the exact model’s manual; input limits and options vary.
  2. Select native resolution and maximum refresh rate. Choose the monitor’s native resolution and highest supported refresh rate in your operating system’s display settings or graphics control panel. Menu labels and paths depend on the operating system and GPU, so consult their documentation if the 240Hz option is missing.
  3. Choose whether to use Adaptive-Sync. If your monitor and GPU support it and you want variable refresh behavior, enable Adaptive-Sync in the monitor menu and the corresponding GPU settings. Check the manual for conflicts with blur-reduction or strobing modes.
  4. Start with moderate overdrive and test it. Compare motion at a moderate response-time setting before trying stronger levels. Look at moving edges and dark-to-light transitions, then check the result in the games and frame-rate range you actually use.
  5. Adjust brightness for your room. Keep a standard or neutral picture mode as a reference. Avoid treating any generic brightness, contrast, gamma, color-temperature, or sharpness value as calibrated for your monitor.

Which settings matter most?

Refresh rate: confirm the display is actually running at 240Hz

A 240Hz label describes the display’s maximum capability under supported conditions; it does not mean every connected device, input, resolution, and system setting is currently delivering 240Hz. The monitor, graphics card, connection, and selected display mode all need to support the combination you want. Consult the model’s manual for input-specific limits. For example, the AOC 27G2Z manual documents model-specific display settings, including a DisplayPort capability setting; that is not a rule for every monitor.

Overdrive: balance clearer motion against overshoot

Overdrive applies stronger pixel transitions to reduce transition time. But a setting that is too aggressive can cause overshoot, also called inverse ghosting: a bright or colored trail appears on the opposite side of a moving object. The highest level is not automatically the best choice.

Use a ghosting test to compare the monitor’s response-time modes, then validate the result in real gameplay. ASUS ROG’s monitor setup guide recommends checking both a ghosting pattern and game content, and cautions against simply selecting the highest overdrive level. The right choice can depend on the monitor and the frame rates you typically experience.

Adaptive-Sync and blur reduction: check feature compatibility

Adaptive-Sync coordinates display refresh with changing frame rates on compatible systems. Some monitors also offer motion-blur reduction or backlight strobing, but whether those features can run alongside Adaptive-Sync depends on the model. ASUS describes ELMB Sync as combining ELMB and Adaptive-Sync on supported monitors; the AOC 27G2Z manual specifies conditions for its MBR and Overdrive Boost settings. Do not assume those options are universally compatible: check your monitor’s menu and manual.

Brightness and color: use the room and model as your guide

Brightness should suit the room and your comfort. Color temperature, gamma, contrast, and sharpness depend on the display and picture mode, as well as whether your priority is comfortable viewing or color accuracy. There is no source-backed numerical preset for these controls across all 240Hz IPS monitors. If accurate color matters, use calibration guidance or measurements for your exact model rather than a generic preset.

How to choose between settings

  • For motion clarity: Compare overdrive modes for both visible ghosting and overshoot at the frame rates you commonly see.
  • For variable frame rates: Use Adaptive-Sync if your system supports it and you want the display to follow changing frame rates; confirm whether blur-reduction features remain available.
  • If 240Hz is missing: Check supported resolution and refresh rate for the selected input, then verify the monitor, GPU, connection, and display settings against the device documentation.
  • For everyday viewing or color work: Set brightness for the room and seek model-specific calibration information if accurate color is important.
