Freshservice, Jira Service Management, ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus and BMC Helix ITSM are the strongest ServiceNow alternatives for most organizations. Freshservice is the most balanced choice for mid-market and growing enterprises; Jira Service Management is the natural fit for teams already centered on Jira and Confluence; ManageEngine is compelling when broad IT management, hybrid deployment or predictable licensing matters; and BMC Helix is designed for large, regulated environments that need complex service operations tied to AIOps.
The right replacement is not simply the platform that closes tickets most cheaply. Evaluate whether its AI can safely execute work such as password resets, access approvals and onboarding, how deeply it covers ITIL practices, how employees reach support, what it integrates with, and how much migration and governance will cost.

What a ServiceNow alternative must replace
ServiceNow describes IT service management as a combination of incident, request, problem and change workflows, with AI agents, employee self-service, an Employee Center and workflow automation embedded in the same layer. That baseline matters: a credible alternative must handle both classic ITSM records and the employee tasks that happen after a ticket is opened.
Compare each product against these capabilities rather than against a feature-count checklist:
#1 Best Overall
- ITIL practice coverage: incident, service request, problem, change, knowledge, service-level management, asset management and configuration management database (CMDB).
- AI execution: distinguish generated answers, summaries and classifications from agents that can perform an approved action in another system and return audit evidence.
- Employee experience: portal usability, conversational intake, mobile access, Slack or Microsoft Teams channels, multilingual support and workflows for HR, facilities and finance.
- Automation and integration: low-code orchestration, identity and endpoint tools, HR information systems, observability platforms, cloud services and developer tools.
- Deployment and governance: SaaS or on-premises options, data residency, permissions, model controls, logging and separation of duties.
- Economics and exit: license metrics, AI consumption, implementation, migration, customization and the ability to export data and workflows.
No independent benchmark fairly ranks every platform’s AI resolution quality. Vendor percentages and customer counts below are therefore identified as vendor or customer-story claims, not universal performance guarantees.

Freshservice: the balanced, employee-friendly option
Freshworks positions Freshservice as “Service, operations, and assets unified.” Its platform spans ITSM, IT asset management (ITAM), IT operations management (ITOM) and enterprise service management (ESM), with employee onboarding, self-service, intelligent routing, low-code orchestration and asset-lifecycle controls.
Where it stands out
- Employees can request help through a modern portal and connected channels, while administrators manage incidents, requests, changes, problems and assets in the same environment.
- Documented integrations include Microsoft Teams, Slack, Okta, AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, which can support identity, collaboration and cloud operations workflows.
- Low-code orchestration is useful for tasks such as creating accounts, updating groups, assigning equipment or notifying managers without building every workflow from scratch.
- ESM capabilities let HR, facilities and other departments reuse the service-catalog approach for onboarding and internal requests.
Scale and evidence
Freshworks says more than 20,000 businesses worldwide use Freshservice. It also reports 77% faster resolution, 80% of customers going live in under 90 days and an 8% faster average resolution attributed to better asset visibility. These are Freshworks-reported outcomes, not independently audited benchmarks; ask for the definition, baseline, sample and date behind each number.

Best use case and buying checks
Choose Freshservice when you want a relatively fast configuration project and a broad but approachable ITSM and ESM suite. During a proof of value, verify whether its AI agent can execute an approved password reset or access request, what AI usage is included, how CMDB relationships are modeled, where orchestration limits apply and which migration utilities preserve historical records.
Jira Service Management: strongest for Jira-centered engineering teams
Jira Service Management is an enterprise-grade cloud ITSM platform built around standardized processes and automated workflows. Its central advantage is proximity to Jira software projects, Confluence knowledge and Atlassian identity, allowing developers and service agents to work from connected records instead of separate tools.
Rank #2
Capabilities that matter
- Requests can be linked to development issues, deployments, incidents and knowledge articles, reducing handoffs between engineering and IT support.
- Automated workflows can enforce approvals, change controls, escalation paths and service-level targets while retaining the context developers already use.
- TechRadar reports PinkVERIFY ITIL 4 certification for seven practices, including change enablement, incident management and service request management. Certification covers defined practices; it does not prove that every implementation is well governed.
Trade-offs to test
Jira Service Management is usually most comfortable when an organization already operates in the Atlassian ecosystem. Test the employee-facing portal with nontechnical users, the maturity of asset and CMDB functions, multilingual and mobile needs, and the exact actions an AI agent can perform. Model the cost of additional agents, automation runs and premium functions as usage grows; a low entry price can change when large engineering and employee populations are added.
ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus: broad management with cloud or on-premises choice
ManageEngine describes ServiceDesk Plus as a combination of ITSM, ITAM, CMDB and enterprise service management for HR, facilities and finance. It is available as cloud software and as an on-premises deployment, a meaningful distinction for organizations with residency, connectivity or control requirements.
AI functions
Documented capabilities include predictive triage and routing, the Zia virtual support agent for text and voice, generative-AI response generation and summarization, and knowledge discovery. These functions cover different levels of assistance: classification and drafting are not the same as an agent changing a directory group or closing a request after verification.
Edition and deployment questions
- ManageEngine states that native AI capabilities are available across editions without an additional charge. Packaging and regional terms can change, so obtain a written quote that identifies limits, data processing and any metered usage.
- Higher editions add service catalog, change, problem, release and CMDB capabilities; confirm which edition contains each practice your process requires.
- The wider ecosystem can be attractive when endpoint, infrastructure and service management are managed by one vendor, but assess integration quality rather than assuming every component shares the same data model.
Best fit
ServiceDesk Plus suits organizations balancing cost, privacy and breadth, especially where an on-premises option is required. Require a migration demonstration using your incidents, knowledge articles, configuration items, attachments and audit history before selecting it as a replacement.
BMC Helix ITSM: enterprise service operations and agentic AI
BMC positions Helix ITSM as an integrated service-management solution augmented by agentic AI. Its portfolio connects ITSM and ESM with AIOps, observability, event management, discovery, orchestration and security-incident handling.
Rank #3
Why large organizations consider it
- Complex operating models can be represented with detailed roles, approvals, service relationships and governance controls.
- Event and observability data can feed incident and problem workflows, helping operations teams move from alert to documented response.
- Agentic AI is intended to do more than draft text: validate what actions are permitted, what systems are connected and what human approval is required for each run.
How to interpret performance claims
BMC pages include customer-story figures of 90% successful root-cause identification, 60% faster incident resolution and 75% increased operational efficiency. Those numbers describe specific customer experiences reported by BMC, not a guaranteed result for a new deployment. Ask for the customer’s scope, baseline, period and excluded manual work.
Best fit and cautions
Helix is suited to large or regulated environments with mature ITIL governance and a need to connect service management with AIOps and observability. It generally requires more architecture, process design and implementation discipline than a lightweight help desk. Include integration ownership, model-risk controls and long-term administration in the business case.
Other platforms worth validating
Independent 2026 comparison coverage also lists Ivanti Neurons for ITSM, Aisera, Zendesk, HaloITSM, SysAid, TOPdesk, Xurrent, TeamDynamix and Salesforce Agentforce IT Service as alternatives or adjacent choices. Treat these as a second-tier shortlist until each passes the same practical tests for AI task execution, ITIL practice coverage, employee workflows, deployment, governance and migration.
AI capability: assistance versus execution
Marketing terms such as “AI-powered,” “copilot” and “agentic” describe different levels of risk and value. Put every claimed capability into one of these categories:
| Level | Typical output | Control question |
|---|---|---|
| Generation | Drafted replies, knowledge articles or change summaries | Can an agent review sources and edit before sending? |
| Prediction | Category, priority, assignment or likely resolution | What accuracy threshold and fallback rule apply? |
| Conversation | Text or voice intake, guided troubleshooting and status updates | Can it authenticate the requester and preserve the transcript? |
| Execution | Password reset, group change, approval routing, remediation or onboarding step | What permissions, approvals, rollback and audit evidence are enforced? |
For each automation, document the identity of the requester, the systems touched, least-privilege credentials, approval points, rollback behavior, evidence retained and the human handoff condition. A polished answer that cannot safely complete the underlying task is not an automation replacement.

Employee automation scenarios to test
Use real requests, not scripted demonstrations. The following five scenarios expose differences in integration, AI execution and governance:
- Password reset: authenticate the employee, perform the reset through the identity provider, confirm completion and record the audit trail.
- New-hire onboarding: read an approved HRIS record, create or request accounts, assign equipment, schedule orientation and escalate exceptions.
- Access approval: route a request to the correct manager or application owner, enforce separation of duties and update the target system only after approval.
- Major-incident communications: open or update the incident, notify subscribed groups through approved channels, publish status updates and preserve message history.
- Change-risk review: gather affected services, recent incidents and deployment context, calculate or explain risk, and require the designated approver before scheduling.
Measure containment rate, human handoffs, time to resolution, audit evidence and administrator effort for every scenario. Record what happened when the requester supplied incomplete information or when an integration was unavailable.

1. Establish the baseline
Inventory incident, request, problem, change, knowledge, asset and CMDB data; identify retention obligations; map current integrations; and list the employee and departmental workflows that must not break during transition.
2. Define the target operating model
Decide which teams are fulfillers, which employees are requesters, who approves access and changes, how service ownership works and which actions require human review. Avoid reproducing obsolete queues and custom fields simply because they exist in the old platform.
3. Run a proof of value
Configure the five scenarios above with production-like identities, sample assets and real approval chains. Require each vendor to show failed-authentication handling, rollback, logs, data residency and administrator configuration—not only a successful happy path.
4. Reconcile commercial terms
Request comparable three-year pricing that separates platform licenses, fulfiller and requester counts, AI usage, premium modules, implementation, migration and ongoing administration. Ask how overages, storage, test environments, integrations and model changes are charged.
5. Migrate in controlled waves
Start with a pilot group, validate imported records and permissions, run old and new workflows in parallel where necessary, then move departments in waves. Keep an export of source data and a documented rollback plan until reconciliation and acceptance testing are complete.
Deployment, governance and security checklist
- Confirm SaaS, private-cloud or on-premises availability for your region and regulatory obligations.
- Specify where prompts, attachments, transcripts and model outputs are stored and whether customer data is used to train shared models.
- Require role-based permissions, approval segregation, immutable audit logs and administrator activity reporting.
- Test data residency, encryption, retention, legal hold and deletion procedures with a real employee record.
- Set AI guardrails: approved tools, maximum action scope, confidence thresholds, human escalation and emergency disablement.
- Validate API limits, webhook reliability, integration ownership and what happens when a connected system is down.
Choosing by organization type
| Your situation | Starting point | Reason to challenge the default |
|---|---|---|
| Growing company seeking fast, broad employee service | Freshservice | Choose another platform if deep CMDB, strict residency or highly specialized operations are non-negotiable. |
| Engineering-led business already using Jira and Confluence | Jira Service Management | Look elsewhere if nontechnical employee experience or standalone IT asset depth is the primary requirement. |
| Hybrid or on-premises environment with broad endpoint management | ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus | Validate edition boundaries and integration depth before assuming all functions are included. |
| Large, regulated enterprise connecting ITSM to operations intelligence | BMC Helix ITSM | Consider a simpler platform if your team cannot support the implementation and governance overhead. |
Common failure modes
Buying a chatbot instead of automation
A conversational front end can reduce intake effort while leaving fulfillment manual. Demand an end-to-end demonstration that changes a test account or workflow and produces verifiable evidence.

AI calls, automation runs, premium modules, storage and implementation can dominate a three-year cost. Compare identical user populations, request volumes, integrations and support levels.
Ignoring data and process migration
Historical approvals, attachments, configuration relationships and knowledge ownership are difficult to recreate. Test export formats and map each retained field before signing.
Automating weak processes
AI will route and execute the rules it is given. Remove duplicate catalogs, clarify ownership and fix approval loops before encoding them in a new platform.
Bottom line
Start with Freshservice for a balanced, approachable replacement; select Jira Service Management when engineering collaboration is the center of your operating model; choose ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus when hybrid deployment and broad IT management are decisive; and shortlist BMC Helix ITSM for complex, regulated service operations linked to AIOps. Whichever platform leads, make the decision on a measured proof of value using real employee requests, explicit AI controls and a three-year cost that includes migration and administration.
