The best 2026 setup for WordPress, XenForo, Moodle and MediaWiki is a supported Linux server running Nginx or Apache, PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11+ or MySQL 8.0+, HTTPS, PHP OPcache, automated off-site backups and monitoring. A single VPS is a sensible starting point for modest traffic, provided every application has its own Unix account, PHP-FPM pool, database credentials, upload paths and cache namespace. Move the database, search or file storage to separate systems only when measurements show a capacity, reliability or isolation problem.

For a self-managed Linux VPS foundation, Antihost VPS provides full root access on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D with NVMe storage, 1 to 16 vCPUs and 2 to 64 GB of RAM; its core regions are USA East, the Netherlands and Ukraine.

Nginx is the practical default for several virtual hosts and PHP-FPM pools. Apache is just as valid when existing rewrite rules, .htaccess files or administrator experience make it safer. Redis and memcached are optional application integrations; Elasticsearch belongs only on a XenForo installation that uses Enhanced Search.

The common platform all four applications can share

These applications have different release cycles, but they can run on one Linux/PHP/database foundation. Use a currently supported Linux distribution, apply security updates promptly and verify each application’s release requirements before changing PHP, the database or extensions.

Application Published compatibility floor Practical 2026 decision
WordPress PHP 8.3 or greater; MariaDB 10.11+ or MySQL 8.0+; HTTPS; Apache or Nginx Use this as the shared baseline. WordPress’s host request is published at WordPress.org.
XenForo 2.3 PHP 7.2+ and MySQL 5.7+; MariaDB and Percona are compatible; PHP 8.3 is recommended Run on PHP 8.3 after testing extensions and add Elasticsearch 7.2+ only for Enhanced Search.
Moodle Primarily Linux with Apache and PostgreSQL, MySQL or MariaDB; Nginx and OpenLiteSpeed are possible when release requirements are met Check the exact Moodle release, supported database and required PHP extensions before upgrading.
MediaWiki Current stable releases require PHP 8.3+; MariaDB/MySQL are recommended Confirm the release’s extension list. APCu, ImageMagick or GD, shell access and memcached may be needed for selected features.

The versions above are compatibility statements, not a promise that every plugin, theme, extension or third-party integration supports them. The newest common target in these requirements is PHP 8.3 with MariaDB 10.11 or MySQL 8.0. Keep a staging copy and test the exact application versions before production upgrades.

Design the server before installing software

Use one site boundary per application

Create separate Unix users and groups for WordPress, XenForo, Moodle and MediaWiki. Give each site its own document root, upload directory, logs, environment secrets and PHP-FPM pool. A compromised plugin or extension should not be able to write another site’s files or read its configuration.

Create separate database users with only the permissions their application needs. Use distinct database names, strong randomly generated passwords and separate credentials for administrative tools. Prefix cache keys separately, even when several applications use the same Redis or memcached service; otherwise one site’s flush operation can evict another site’s objects, and poorly isolated code could read unrelated keys.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep state on fast persistent storage

Place database files on fast persistent storage and watch disk latency, not just disk capacity. Uploads, Moodle course files, forum attachments and MediaWiki images can create a high-write workload. Keep them on the OS volume initially if the workload is small, then move high-write data or backups to a separate volume when latency, backup duration or recovery objectives justify the added complexity.

Terminate TLS centrally

Serve every hostname over HTTPS and redirect HTTP to HTTPS. Nginx or Apache can terminate TLS, serve static files and pass dynamic requests to the correct PHP-FPM pool. Renew certificates automatically and test renewal before a certificate approaches expiration.

Nginx or Apache: choose the lower-risk operation

Decision factor Nginx Apache
Several virtual hosts Clear server blocks and a single front end make it convenient to host multiple applications. Virtual hosts are mature and well documented, especially where an existing Apache estate already exists.
Static files and TLS Efficient static-file delivery and straightforward TLS termination are strong reasons to choose it. Also handles TLS and static assets reliably; performance depends on the chosen modules and configuration.
PHP execution Passes requests to separate PHP-FPM pools, which makes per-site limits and isolation explicit. Can use PHP-FPM as well, while also supporting established Apache PHP and module workflows.
Rewrite rules Rules are written in server configuration; there is no per-directory .htaccess lookup. Best when applications or operators depend on .htaccess, mod_rewrite or existing directory-level rules.
Operational familiarity Choose it when the team is comfortable reviewing server blocks and reloads. Choose it when administrator knowledge, vendor guidance or existing automation reduces configuration risk.

Neither server is universally faster for these applications. A correctly configured Apache installation is preferable to an unfamiliar Nginx installation that breaks rewrites, uploads or upgrade procedures. Whichever you select, validate each site’s front-controller rules, file permissions, large-upload settings and PHP-FPM socket or TCP connection.

One shared VPS or separate tiers?

Architecture Advantages Costs and risks Use it when
One VPS Lowest administrative overhead, simple local database connections and one place to patch and monitor. A kernel, storage or database failure can affect all four sites; noisy workloads compete for CPU, memory and I/O. Traffic is modest, the applications fit comfortably after measurement and a short outage has an acceptable blast radius.
Web tier plus separate database Database resources and backups are isolated; the web tier can be resized independently. Requires network security, connection monitoring, backup coordination and tolerance for network latency. The database is consistently the bottleneck or its recovery and maintenance needs differ from the web servers.
Separate search tier Elasticsearch memory and indexing work cannot starve PHP or the database. Another service to patch, secure, monitor and back up; index rebuilds consume resources. XenForo Enhanced Search is enabled and forum index size or rebuild time warrants isolation.
Separate file-storage tier Large uploads and media backups are isolated from the operating system and database volumes. More moving parts, permissions and restore dependencies. Media growth, write latency or backup windows make a local volume impractical.

Start with one VPS, collect metrics and document the thresholds that would trigger a split. Moving prematurely creates distributed-system failure modes without solving a measured problem.

Deployment sequence that avoids common mistakes

  1. Provision and harden Linux. Select a supported distribution, create a non-root administrator, disable password-based SSH where practical, restrict the firewall to required services and enable automatic security updates or a documented patch schedule.
  2. Install the web server. Install Nginx or Apache and create one virtual host per hostname. Keep each site’s configuration in a separate file, test the configuration before reloads and send access and error logs to distinct files.
  3. Install PHP 8.3 and PHP-FPM. Install the extensions required by the exact WordPress, XenForo, Moodle and MediaWiki releases. Create one PHP-FPM pool per application, assign its Unix user, set pool-level process and request limits, and use separate sockets or ports. Enable OPcache in every pool.
  4. Install the database. Use MariaDB 10.11+ or MySQL 8.0+ for the shared 2026 baseline, unless the tested Moodle or MediaWiki release requires a different supported database. Bind the database to localhost on a one-VPS design, remove anonymous accounts and unused test databases, and create one database and least-privilege user per application.
  5. Create filesystem boundaries. Put code, writable uploads, cache directories and logs in separate paths. The web user should write only where the application requires it; code and configuration should not be writable by PHP during normal operation.
  6. Configure HTTPS. Issue certificates for every hostname, redirect HTTP, enable automatic renewal and verify that application-generated URLs, cookies and reverse-proxy headers all recognize HTTPS.
  7. Install each application in staging first. Import a representative database and uploads, run its upgrade checks, test login, uploads, scheduled tasks, email, search and background jobs, then repeat the procedure on production during a maintenance window.
  8. Schedule application jobs correctly. Use system cron or the application’s documented task runner rather than relying on visitor-triggered jobs for busy sites. Monitor failures and runtime, especially for Moodle’s scheduled tasks, forum notifications, WordPress cron events and MediaWiki maintenance scripts.
  9. Add backups before launch. Back up databases, uploads, configuration and encryption secrets to encrypted off-site storage. Keep retention appropriate to the site’s recovery needs, and perform test restores to a clean environment rather than assuming a successful backup job is recoverable.
  10. Record the build. Document distribution and package versions, virtual hosts, PHP extensions, pool limits, database settings, cron entries, backup destinations, certificate renewal and rollback steps. A second administrator should be able to rebuild the server from this record.

PHP, database and extension details by application

WordPress

WordPress sets the highest common floor in this group: PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, HTTPS, and Apache or Nginx. Legacy versions may still run old code, but they are outside current support and increase security and compatibility risk. Verify that themes and plugins support the PHP version before switching production.

Keep the WordPress uploads directory writable, but do not make the entire installation writable. Use a separate PHP pool and cache prefix. OPcache is a baseline optimization; object caching through Redis or memcached should be enabled only through a maintained WordPress integration and tested for cache invalidation.

XenForo 2.3

XenForo 2.3 has a published minimum of PHP 7.2+ and MySQL 5.7+, with MariaDB and Percona compatibility; PHP 8.3 is recommended. Those minimums describe what can run, not the best target for a new 2026 deployment. Test add-ons, image processing and scheduled jobs on PHP 8.3 before changing the live forum.

Enhanced Search is a separate requirement: use Elasticsearch 7.2 or newer when that feature is installed. Do not deploy Elasticsearch merely because a forum exists. Size it for the forum’s index and rebuild workload, secure its network access, monitor heap and disk usage, and plan index rebuilds as maintenance operations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moodle

Moodle supports Linux with Apache and PostgreSQL, MySQL or MariaDB; Nginx and OpenLiteSpeed are also possible when the specific release requirements are satisfied. Moodle’s course files and scheduled tasks can create substantial storage and background-job activity, so monitor task queues and disk latency independently from web requests.

Redis or memcached may be used for Moodle caching when the release and selected plugins support the integration. Give Moodle its own cache keys and test cache invalidation after upgrades. Never treat a cache as the only copy of course files or database data.

MediaWiki

Current stable MediaWiki releases require PHP 8.3 or newer and recommend MariaDB or MySQL. Optional features can require APCu, ImageMagick or GD, shell access and memcached; install only what the selected release and extensions document.

The MediaWiki installation requirements page lists 256 MB of RAM and 85 MB of storage as recommended minimums for a single-computer site, while explicitly warning that those figures are insufficient for a busy public site. Use them as a functional floor, not as a production capacity plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Caching: OPcache first, shared object caches second

PHP OPcache

Enable OPcache for every PHP-FPM pool. It keeps compiled PHP bytecode in memory, reducing repeated parsing and compilation. Set memory and revalidation behavior consistently, then monitor hit rate and restart behavior after deployments. Clear or reset OPcache as part of a controlled code release when changed files are not detected automatically.

Redis or memcached

Use Redis or memcached only through application-supported integrations. Redis offers richer data structures and persistence options; memcached is a simpler volatile object cache. The practical choice is the one your application, plugins and operators can maintain reliably.

Separate applications with different databases or key prefixes, restrict the service to private interfaces, require authentication where supported and monitor memory eviction. A cache outage should degrade performance rather than delete authoritative data, so verify that sessions, locks and queues are configured according to each application’s documentation.

Elasticsearch

Elasticsearch is not a general PHP accelerator or a replacement for the application database. Add it for XenForo Enhanced Search when forum search quality and indexing workload justify the extra memory, storage and maintenance. Keep it off the public network, monitor indexing duration and disk space, and document how to rebuild the index after a restore.

Backups, upgrades and security operations

  • Back up all recoverable state: databases, uploads, course files, attachments, MediaWiki images, configuration, secrets and any search-index rebuild instructions.
  • Keep copies off the VPS: encrypt backups in transit and at rest, use retention that covers accidental deletion and malware recovery, and test restores on a separate environment.
  • Patch in staging: test Linux packages, PHP, MariaDB or MySQL, web-server changes, WordPress plugins, XenForo add-ons, Moodle plugins and MediaWiki extensions before production.
  • Use least privilege: separate Unix and database accounts, restrict administrative interfaces, protect configuration files and avoid running maintenance scripts as root unless required.
  • Monitor the failure signals: CPU saturation, memory pressure, disk latency and fullness, database connections and slow queries, PHP-FPM queue depth, cron failures, cache hit rate, backup duration, certificate expiry and search-indexing time.
  • Define rollback: retain the previous package or application release where licensing and support permit, take a pre-upgrade backup, and write the exact steps to restore code and database state.

How to size hardware without guessing

The official application documents establish compatibility, not one universal CPU or RAM specification for production. Traffic, concurrent PHP requests, logged-in users, media size, database write rate, cron workload, search indexing and plugin quality can change the answer by an order of magnitude.

Begin with a VPS that leaves headroom after the operating system, database, PHP-FPM pools and caches are running. During representative peak traffic, record CPU utilization, memory pressure, swap activity, PHP-FPM saturation, database latency, disk latency and queue depth. Repeat the observation after imports, backups, image processing, Moodle scheduled tasks and XenForo index updates. Increase capacity when one resource remains constrained after configuration fixes, not because a generic plan name promises performance.

For a public launch, establish a load-test or staging procedure that exercises the heaviest real workflows: WordPress publishing and plugin actions, forum reads and searches, Moodle course access and task execution, and MediaWiki page edits and image handling. Compare results before and after PHP or database upgrades, and keep the test data representative enough to expose slow queries and storage growth.

When to split the architecture

Move the database first when it is the bottleneck

Consistently high database latency, connection exhaustion or storage contention can justify a separate database host. Secure the private network, restrict allowed clients, measure round-trip latency and coordinate database and web backups. A split does not automatically improve performance if the real problem is an inefficient query or an undersized storage device.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move search when indexing competes with web traffic

If XenForo index rebuilds consume enough memory or I/O to delay PHP requests, place Elasticsearch on a dedicated tier. Keep the forum database authoritative and document index recreation after disaster recovery.

Move files when media dominates storage

Separate uploads and media when backup windows, disk growth or write latency threaten the OS or database volume. Confirm that every application can still generate correct URLs, enforce permissions and restore files together with its database.

Separate applications for risk, not fashion

Independent servers reduce the blast radius of a kernel, disk or configuration failure, but multiply patching, monitoring and restore work. Split a site when its uptime requirement, traffic pattern or security boundary is materially different from the others.

Troubleshooting common deployment failures

Pages return 502 or PHP-FPM errors

Check that the virtual host points to the correct pool socket or port, the socket permissions match the web-server user, the pool is running and its process limits are not exhausted. Review the pool and web-server error logs before increasing limits; a database stall can make PHP workers appear to be the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Permalinks, forum routes or wiki pages return 404

Validate the front-controller rewrite rules for the selected web server. Apache installations should confirm required rewrite modules and inherited .htaccess permissions. Nginx installations must place equivalent rules in the server block because it does not read .htaccess.

Uploads fail or time out

Compare PHP upload limits, request timeouts, web-server body-size limits and filesystem permissions. Check available disk space and inode usage, then verify that only the intended upload directory is writable.

Users see stale pages or missing sessions

Inspect cache keys, cookie scope, HTTPS proxy headers and session storage. Ensure each application’s Redis or memcached namespace is unique and temporarily disable the object cache to distinguish an integration error from an application or database problem.

Search is empty after restoring XenForo

The database restore does not guarantee a valid search index. Verify Elasticsearch connectivity and version compatibility, then run the documented XenForo index rebuild while monitoring memory, disk and job duration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scheduled work is delayed

Check cron execution, the service account, PHP CLI version, path permissions and queue logs. Confirm that staging and production do not share a cache or database, and make sure long-running Moodle, WordPress, XenForo or MediaWiki jobs are not killed by an overly short timeout.

A practical 2026 decision checklist

  • Use a supported Linux distribution with Nginx or Apache.
  • Target PHP 8.3+, MariaDB 10.11+ or MySQL 8.0+, subject to the exact release requirements.
  • Serve every application over HTTPS.
  • Give each application separate Unix users, PHP-FPM pools, database users, writable directories and cache namespaces.
  • Enable OPcache; add Redis or memcached only through supported integrations.
  • Install Elasticsearch only when XenForo Enhanced Search requires it.
  • Start with one VPS for modest workloads and split database, search or storage tiers based on measured bottlenecks.
  • Encrypt off-site backups and prove that restores work.
  • Monitor resource saturation, queues, backups, cache behavior and indexing time.
  • Use staging for PHP, database, web-server and application upgrades.
