There is no single best self-propelled walk-behind mower for every lawn. A battery model is usually the better fit when you want low routine maintenance, less noise and push-button starting. A gas mower remains the practical choice when you need continuous refueling, established engine servicing and dependable performance on long mowing sessions. For a shortlist, compare EGO’s 21-inch battery mower, Greenworks Commercial’s 82V 21-inch model and Honda’s HRN216VYA gas mower, then match the deck, drive controls, runtime and ownership cost to your yard.

Best choices at a glance

Mower Power Notable specifications Best suited to
EGO Power+ 21-inch self-propelled mower Battery Variable-speed self-propulsion; six cutting heights from 1.5 to 4 inches; cordless operation Homeowners who want a quiet, low-maintenance battery mower with adjustable drive speed
Greenworks Commercial 82V 21-inch brushless self-propelled mower Battery Greenworks claims 1.5 acres per charge, charging in as little as 60 minutes, 60 dB operation, 30% lower weight than gas and SmartCut technology Larger lawns where published battery coverage and fast charging matter
Honda HRN216VYA Gas Variable-speed Smart Drive; GCV170 engine; seven cutting heights from 1 to 4 inches; mulching or bagging; three-year warranty Buyers who prefer refueling continuity and conventional engine service
Toro 21311 Gas Consumer Reports listed a $370 guide price in 2025 Value shoppers using a dated price reference, subject to current retail pricing

The figures above are not directly interchangeable: battery coverage depends on grass conditions, blade load, terrain, battery capacity and whether a battery is included. Prices and bundles change, so verify the current package and warranty before buying.

How to choose between battery and gas

Choose battery when quiet, simple ownership is the priority

Battery mowers start without fuel priming, spark plugs or oil changes. They also avoid exhaust at the operator and generally produce less noise. Greenworks publishes 60 dB for its 82V mower and describes it as four times quieter than gas. That is a manufacturer comparison, not a universal measurement for every mower or operating position, but it illustrates the practical difference in a residential yard.

The trade-off is energy planning. You must charge the battery, confirm the battery is included, and allow for reduced coverage in wet or tall grass. A second battery can remove a mid-mow delay, but it raises the purchase cost.

Choose gas when uninterrupted mowing and service familiarity matter

A gas mower can be refueled in minutes and does not depend on a charging outlet. That is useful for large properties, seasonal overgrowth or users who do not want to plan around battery capacity. The cost is routine engine care: fresh fuel, oil checks and changes, air-filter and spark-plug service, plus winter storage procedures. Gas models are also louder and heavier in operation than many battery alternatives.

Cutting performance: what actually matters

Deck rigidity and blade speed

A rigid deck helps keep the blade at a consistent height over uneven ground. Adequate blade speed improves the mower’s ability to lift grass for a cleaner cut and to process clippings when mulching. Greenworks highlights a brushless motor and SmartCut technology, which adjusts operation to cutting load. Honda’s HRN216VYA uses a Twin Blade MicroCut system designed to produce finer clippings for mulching.

Marketing terms do not replace a specification for your conditions. Dense, wet or tall grass demands more power than a regularly maintained, dry lawn. If your lawn routinely bogs down a mower, raise the deck for the first pass and lower it on a second pass instead of forcing one extremely low cut.

Height range and seasonal adjustment

EGO provides six positions from 1.5 to 4 inches. Honda provides seven positions from 1 to 4 inches. Pro Tool Reviews reported a 1.0-to-4.5-inch range for the tested class in its 2025 guide. A broad range lets you keep grass taller during heat or drought and lower it during periods of vigorous growth, but the lowest setting is not automatically the healthiest setting for your turf.

PowerSmart EasyDrive Pro 22-Inch 170cc Self Propelled Gas Lawn Mower
  • MORE CUTTING POWER: Powerful 170cc 4-stroke OHV engine delivers reliable performance for thick grass and larger yards. Auto choke and recoil start make starting easy.
  • LESS PUSHING EFFORT: Self-propelled rear-wheel drive provides better traction on slopes and uneven terrain, reducing pushing effort.
  • WIDER CUTS: Wide 22-inch cutting path helps finish mowing faster, while the durable steel deck and heavy-duty blade are built to last season after season.
  • VERSATILE 3-IN-1 SYSTEM: Choose between mulching, rear bagging, or rear discharge to match changing lawn conditions.
  • EASY HEIGHT CHANGES: Easily adjust cutting height from 1.5" to 3.9" for different mowing needs.

Mulching versus bagging

Mulching returns finely cut clippings to the lawn; bagging removes them for a clean appearance or when clippings are too long and wet to disperse. Honda states that the HRN mowers are designed to provide cut quality while mulching or bagging, including in tough mowing conditions. In practice, use the mower’s approved blade, keep the deck underside clear and avoid cutting more than roughly one-third of the grass height at once.

Self-propulsion and terrain

Variable-speed drive is more useful than a high top speed when your lawn includes slopes, trees, beds or tight turns. Set the drive so the mower travels at your walking pace; moving too quickly can leave uncut strips, while excessive speed can make steering difficult.

What to check before purchase

  • Drive control that can be reached without changing your grip.
  • Speed adjustment with enough range for both level ground and slopes.
  • Front-wheel, rear-wheel or all-wheel drive appropriate to your terrain and preferred turning style.
  • Comfortable handle height and a drive lever that does not require sustained squeezing force.
  • Wheel traction that remains predictable on damp grass; never mow a slope when footing is unsafe.

EGO specifies variable-speed self-propulsion, and Honda specifies variable-speed Smart Drive. Those controls address different walking speeds; they do not make a mower safe on every incline.

Battery runtime, charging and lawn size

Interpreting the 1.5-acre claim

Greenworks Commercial states that its 82V 21-inch mower covers 1.5 acres on a single charge and can charge in as little as 60 minutes. Treat both figures as manufacturer claims under stated test conditions, not guarantees for every lawn. Tall grass, wet conditions, frequent self-propel use, hills and a low cutting height reduce real coverage.

  • 170CC OHV ENGINE – Powerful 170cc 4-stroke OHV engine delivers reliable performance for thick grass and larger yards. Auto choke and recoil start make starting easy.
  • SELF-PROPELLED REAR-WHEEL DRIVE – Rear-wheel drive provides better traction on slopes and uneven terrain, reducing pushing effort.
  • 22-INCH STEEL CUTTING DECK – Wide 22-inch cutting path helps finish mowing faster, while the durable steel deck and heavy-duty blade are built to last season after season.
  • 3-IN-1 CUTTING OPTIONS – Choose mulching, rear bagging or rear discharge. The large 60L grass bag holds more clippings and reduces emptying.
  • 6-POSITION HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT – Easily adjust cutting height from 1.5" to 3.9" for different mowing needs.

Measure your mowable area rather than your total property. Buildings, beds, driveways and fenced areas do not consume mowing energy. If your usable lawn approaches the published limit, plan a charging break or budget for an additional compatible battery.

Battery questions to answer at checkout

  1. Is the battery included, and what capacity is it?
  2. Is the charger included, and is the quoted charging time for that charger and battery?
  3. Can the battery be used in other tools from the same system?
  4. What coverage does the warranty provide for the battery, charger and mower separately?
  5. Is a replacement battery available in your region?

Model profiles

EGO Power+ 21-inch self-propelled mower

EGO’s model is a straightforward battery shortlist for a typical residential lawn. Its 21-inch deck balances maneuverability with reasonable productivity, while six height positions from 1.5 to 4 inches cover common mowing preferences. Variable-speed propulsion lets you slow down around obstacles and match your walking pace on open sections.

Its main buying question is not the motor alone but the battery package. Confirm capacity, included accessories, charge time and current warranty language. For a small or medium lawn, a bundle that includes one suitable battery may be better value than a lower mower-only price that requires separate purchases.

Greenworks Commercial 82V 21-inch brushless mower

This is the battery alternative to examine when your lawn is large enough that runtime and recharge time dominate the decision. The published 1.5-acre coverage, up-to-60-minute charging, 60 dB operation and claimed 30% lower weight than gas are useful comparison points. SmartCut technology is intended to vary power with the load, helping balance cut performance and energy use.

  • Single-lever deck adjustment for quickly setting your mow height

Validate the exact regional model and battery bundle. Commercial branding can indicate a different warranty, dealer channel or service process than a residential version, so read the terms rather than assuming they match.

Honda HRN216VYA

The HRN216VYA is the gas benchmark in this group. Its GCV170 engine, variable-speed Smart Drive, seven height positions from 1 to 4 inches and support for mulching or bagging cover the core needs of a conventional walk-behind mower. Honda lists a three-year warranty.

Its advantage is refueling continuity: carry approved fuel and continue mowing without waiting for a battery. Its disadvantages are the ongoing engine-maintenance schedule, fuel storage and higher operating noise. Include those costs and tasks when comparing it with a battery mower.

Value and total ownership cost

Purchase price is only the first line. Add the battery and charger if they are not included, replacement blades, fuel and oil for a gas mower, seasonal storage supplies, and likely warranty or service costs.

Consumer Reports listed guide prices in 2025 of $530 for the Honda HRN216PKA and $370 for the Toro 21311. These are dated reference points, not current universal prices, and they may represent different configurations from the models above. Retail prices, stock and included accessories change by country and season.

Cost item Battery mower Gas mower
Up-front equipment Mower plus required battery and charger Mower; fuel container may be additional
Energy Electricity and eventual battery replacement Fuel and engine oil
Routine service Deck cleaning, blade sharpening and battery care Those tasks plus oil, air-filter, spark-plug and fuel-system care
Downtime risk Charging or depleted battery Fuel availability or engine-start problems

Buying checklist

  1. Measure the mowable area. Compare it with the battery maker’s tested coverage, leaving margin for hills and heavy growth.
  2. Inspect your terrain. Count slopes, narrow gates, roots and obstacles; choose a deck and drive layout you can turn comfortably.
  3. Set your cutting range. Make sure the mower’s lowest and highest settings suit your turf and seasonal mowing plan.
  4. Choose clipping management. Confirm that the mulch plug, bag and side-discharge equipment you need are included.
  5. Compare complete bundles. Add batteries, chargers, blades, fuel, oil and warranty coverage rather than comparing mower-only prices.
  6. Check service access. Confirm local repair support, replacement batteries or engine parts and the exact warranty period.

Common problems and fixes

Battery mower stops before the lawn is finished

  • Raise the deck and slow the drive on the first pass through tall grass.
  • Clean packed clippings from the deck and make sure the blade is sharp.
  • Charge fully and check whether the battery is cold, overheated or nearing the end of its service life.
  • For a lawn near the published coverage limit, use a second battery or schedule a charging break.

Uneven or ragged cut

  • Check tire pressure and confirm the height selector is locked at the same setting.
  • Sharpen or replace a damaged blade.
  • Mow when grass is dry and avoid removing more than one-third of the blade height.
  • Overlap passes slightly instead of walking too quickly.

Self-propel drive feels too fast or weak

  • Reduce the speed setting and verify that the drive control is fully released when turning.
  • Remove grass from the drive area and inspect wheels for debris.
  • On a gas mower, follow the engine manual for air-filter, fuel and throttle checks; on a battery mower, confirm a charged battery and unobstructed deck.

Bottom-line decision

Buy a battery self-propelled mower when lower routine maintenance, quieter operation and no fuel handling outweigh charging logistics. EGO is a sensible general residential shortlist, while Greenworks Commercial’s 82V model deserves attention for larger lawns because of its published 1.5-acre coverage and fast-charge claim. Choose the Honda HRN216VYA when refueling continuity, familiar engine servicing and a three-year warranty are more important than noise and maintenance. The best value is the mower whose complete, warrantied package matches your lawn size and terrain—not necessarily the lowest sticker price.
