They combine Knox hardware and software protections, Knox Matrix monitoring, a published update-eligibility commitment for newer Wi-Fi appliances, and UL Solutions Diamond IoT-security verification for 2024-and-newer Family Hub models. LG ThinQ and InstaView refrigerators are the better fit when your priority is remote control, alerts, diagnostics and wireless feature updates, but the reviewed LG material does not state a universal refrigerator update term or an equivalent refrigerator-specific security certification.
Both lines add an account, home-network connection and cloud services to an appliance that traditionally worked offline. Security therefore depends on the exact model, country, firmware support, account controls and the way you configure your network—not only on the logo on the door.

A connected refrigerator is a networked computer attached to food storage. It may hold an account session, communicate with a vendor cloud, display personal calendars or photos, expose a microphone or camera, and send notifications to several phones. A compromise would not necessarily spoil food, but it could reveal household routines, create a path into other smart-home devices, or leave a neglected appliance running outdated software.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Good buying decisions therefore combine four questions:
- Is there a documented hardware and software security design?
- How long does the manufacturer commit to security and feature updates for this exact model?
- Which functions require an account, cloud connection, camera or microphone?
- Can the refrigerator be isolated and managed safely on your home network?
Energy efficiency, capacity, ice-system reliability, service access and filter costs still matter. Security is an additional ownership requirement, not a substitute for basic appliance quality.
Why Samsung Family Hub leads on documented security
Knox Vault separates sensitive credentials
Samsung describes Knox Vault as a physically isolated hardware environment for sensitive information. On supported appliances, encryption keys and authentication data can be stored on a separate security chip rather than in the refrigerator’s general-purpose system. Hardware isolation is valuable because an attacker who gains access to ordinary software has a harder path to the secrets that protect an account or encrypted data.
Knox Vault is a platform feature, not a promise that every Family Hub model has identical hardware. Confirm that the exact refrigerator specification lists the protection and that your market receives the same configuration.
Knox Matrix watches the connected ecosystem
Knox Matrix extends protection beyond one appliance. Samsung describes three elements: Trust Chain, Cross Platform and Credential Sync. Together they are intended to monitor connected devices, help identify abnormal behavior, and encrypt credentials and shared data as devices communicate. Samsung introduced Credential Sync on the 2024 Bespoke 4-Door refrigerator with AI Family Hub.
This matters when your refrigerator shares a smart-home account with phones, televisions or other appliances. A platform that can detect and protect relationships among devices is more useful than a security feature that stops at the refrigerator’s own processor. It still depends on supported hardware, current firmware and a properly secured Samsung account.

Samsung’s update commitment has a defined scope
Samsung Newsroom U.K. reported in 2025 that Wi-Fi-enabled home appliances launched from 2024 are eligible for software updates for up to seven years. The wording is important: it is an eligibility commitment, not proof that every refrigerator receives seven full years in every country. Model launch date, regional catalog, firmware policy and the distinction between security patches and feature updates can affect what you actually receive.

Before purchase, record the complete model identifier and ask Samsung support or the regional product page for the end date and update types. Keep the original receipt and firmware version so a service representative can verify eligibility later.
UL Solutions Diamond verification adds an external check
Samsung’s current product information says 2024-and-newer FDR Family Hub refrigerators received UL Solutions’ Diamond-grade IoT-security verification, described by Samsung as the first home-appliance rating at that level. An independent laboratory credential does not make an appliance invulnerable, but it gives buyers a product-level assessment to look for instead of relying only on a broad corporate security statement.
Check that the model you are considering is an FDR Family Hub refrigerator covered by the cited qualification. A nearby Family Hub variant, an older production run or a refrigerator sold in another region may not share the same designation.
Connected convenience has a clear trade-off
AI Home network services and apps require Wi-Fi and a Samsung account. Disconnecting the refrigerator removes those connected functions, even though the cooling system and local appliance controls can continue to perform their basic jobs according to the model’s manual. Decide whether screen services, remote monitoring and account-based automation justify that dependency.

Samsung also says AI Vision Inside could recognize 37 fresh-food items as of April 2025. That is a manufacturer claim limited to supported, visible items; packaging, lighting, shelf position and an obstructed camera can reduce recognition. Treat the feature as an inventory aid rather than an authoritative food-safety or stock-counting system.

What LG ThinQ and InstaView offer
Useful control and notification features
LG documents smartphone and voice control, shopping lists, interior viewing on supported models, temperature adjustment, door-open notifications, vacation mode and Smart Diagnosis through ThinQ-connected refrigerators. InstaView pages describe Wi-Fi-based remote management of temperature, ice production and diagnostics.
ThinQ can send temperature alerts, monitor filter replacement, provide proactive maintenance or diagnostic information, and deliver wireless feature updates on select appliances. These functions can prevent a missed open door, help identify a cooling problem while you are away, and reduce guesswork when a filter needs changing.
What the published LG information does not establish
The reviewed LG pages do not publish a universal refrigerator software-support duration. They also do not state a refrigerator-specific security certification comparable to Samsung’s cited UL Solutions rating. That is not proof that LG refrigerators lack security controls; it means a buyer cannot infer a fixed support period or equivalent certification from those pages.

Do you need Wi-Fi for a smart refrigerator?
You need Wi-Fi for the features that communicate with a phone or cloud service. Without it, remote temperature changes, door alerts, inventory synchronization, diagnostics sent to a service center and wireless updates cannot work. A refrigerator’s core cooling, local temperature controls and many dispensing functions are generally designed to operate without an internet connection, but the exact fallback behavior is model-specific.
For Samsung AI Home, Wi-Fi and a Samsung account are explicit requirements. LG’s ThinQ remote-management features likewise rely on a network connection, with the precise account and regional requirements shown in the model setup flow. If you want a connected appliance but do not want cloud dependence, choose a model whose everyday operation remains fully accessible from the door controls and whose camera, microphone and screen services can be disabled independently.

Do not connect a refrigerator to an unprotected guest network simply because it is convenient. Use a modern encrypted home network, change the router’s default administrator password, and keep the router firmware current. An isolated IoT network or separate SSID can limit the damage if an appliance account or firmware component is compromised.

- Confirm the model and region. Save the complete model number, production or launch information shown on the product page, warranty terms and the country in which you will use the refrigerator. Security features and update eligibility can vary within a family.
- Update the router first. Install the router’s current firmware, enable WPA2 or WPA3 encryption as supported, replace default Wi-Fi credentials and disable remote administration unless you need it.
- Create a unique appliance account password. Do not reuse the password from email, shopping or banking. Turn on two-factor authentication or a passkey if the Samsung or LG account offers it in your region.
- Connect through the official app. Download the manufacturer’s current app, pair the refrigerator using the in-app flow, and verify that the model shown in the account exactly matches the appliance in your kitchen.
- Install firmware before adding services. Let the refrigerator complete available updates, then record the version and date. If an update fails, keep the door closed, restore a stable connection and retry from the app rather than interrupting power during installation.
- Limit permissions. Review microphone, camera, contacts, location and notification permissions on every phone signed in to the account. Grant only what the feature needs; a shopping-list function does not automatically need contacts access.
- Configure alerts deliberately. Enable door-open and temperature alerts for the people who can respond, set quiet hours where the app allows them, and test an alert before relying on it during travel.
- Review shared access. Remove former household members, old phones and third-party integrations. Change the account password after a roommate, cleaner or service technician no longer needs access.
- Choose a network boundary. Put the refrigerator on an IoT SSID or VLAN when your router supports one. Keep administrator consoles, work computers and backups on the primary network.
- Document recovery information. Store the manual, model number, filter specification, support contact and account recovery method offline. If the app service is unavailable, you should still be able to operate the appliance locally.
Interoperability: Matter, Thread and voice assistants
Smart-home compatibility can reduce the number of separate apps, but each bridge adds another account and permission path. Samsung’s Matter explanation describes device attestation and operational certificates, mechanisms intended to verify a device and protect its participation in a Matter fabric. LG documents a dashboard for compatible Matter and Thread devices on its SIGNATURE platform.
These descriptions do not guarantee that every refrigerator model exposes every function to Matter, Thread, Alexa or Google Assistant. A product may expose an on/off state or temperature reading while keeping cameras, inventory and diagnostics inside the manufacturer’s app. Check the exact compatibility list, required hub, supported commands and whether the integration remains available after a firmware update.

Verify security and support before comparing finishes
- Search the exact model number for hardware security features, certification language and the date of the latest firmware.
- Ask for a written update policy, including the difference between security patches, bug fixes and feature releases.
- Confirm whether the refrigerator is included in the regional version of any seven-year or other support commitment.
- Check whether a Samsung or LG account is mandatory for the functions you actually want.
- Find out whether camera, microphone, advertising, photo and entertainment features can be disabled separately.
Match connected features to your household
- For frequent travel, prioritize reliable temperature and door alerts over a large screen.
- For food organization, check camera placement, recognition limitations and whether an unobscured view is required.
- For maintenance, verify filter alerts, Smart Diagnosis availability and the price and part number of replacement filters.
- For a shared kitchen, confirm multi-user access controls and the process for revoking a former user’s access.
- For a mixed-brand home, verify Matter, Thread, SmartThings, Alexa or Google Assistant support for the refrigerator itself, not merely for the manufacturer’s wider ecosystem.
Do not neglect ordinary appliance criteria
- Measure the opening, door swing, depth with handles and ventilation clearance.
- Compare usable capacity, shelf layout, freezer configuration, ice-maker type and water-dispenser plumbing.
- Check warranty coverage, authorized service availability and expected repair times in your area.
- Price replacement filters and note whether the refrigerator locks you into a proprietary cartridge.
- Read the privacy policy for cloud storage, diagnostic logs, voice recordings and image data before enabling optional services.
Common pitfalls and how to fix them
Assuming a family name guarantees identical security
Product families span several years, regions and hardware revisions. Fix this by recording the model number and asking support to confirm Knox features, certification scope and update eligibility for that exact unit.
Treating a long support statement as an automatic patch schedule
An eligibility period does not tell you how often patches arrive or whether every feature remains supported. Check the firmware history, enable automatic updates where available, and install urgent updates promptly.
Leaving every cloud feature enabled
Screen services, cameras, voice control and remote access increase the amount of data and software exposed. Turn off anything you do not use, remove unnecessary phone permissions and review connected services after major app updates.

Using one password across the kitchen
If the refrigerator account shares a password with email or a streaming service, a breach elsewhere can unlock the appliance account. Use a unique password and multi-factor protection, then review signed-in devices twice a year.
Ignoring alerts until they become noise
Too many notifications train people to dismiss all of them. Set thresholds and quiet hours that fit your household, test a real door-open alert, and nominate one person to respond when a temperature warning arrives.
Assuming a disconnected refrigerator is broken
A router replacement, expired password or changed Wi-Fi name can make a refrigerator appear offline. Reconnect it through the official app, verify the account, install pending firmware and test alerts. If you prefer no cloud connection, remove the appliance from the account and use local controls rather than repeatedly exposing credentials during failed pairing attempts.
Recommended Free Tools
Maintenance after installation
Security is a lifecycle task. Check the app and refrigerator settings at least quarterly for firmware notices, account sessions, new integrations and changed privacy permissions. When you sell or recycle the appliance, remove it from the account, erase stored photos or profiles, revoke integrations and perform the manufacturer’s account-reset procedure before it leaves your home.
Keep filters, door seals and condenser areas maintained as the manual specifies. A refrigerator that cannot hold temperature may trigger alerts regardless of its network security, while a neglected filter can create health and service problems unrelated to firmware.
Bottom line
Choose a Samsung Bespoke AI Family Hub model when documented security architecture, an external IoT-security verification and a clearly stated update-eligibility framework are your leading requirements. Choose an LG ThinQ or InstaView model when its remote alerts, diagnostics and maintenance tools fit your household better, after obtaining a model-specific answer about software support. In either case, secure the account, isolate the appliance where practical, disable services you do not need and verify every claim against the exact model and country before purchase.
