For most Nextcloud administrators, ONLYOFFICE Docs is the clearest independently deployed alternative to Collabora CODE. Its Nextcloud connector supports a document server on the same machine or a separate host, real-time co-editing, group-based access controls, external-storage restrictions, watermarks, macro controls and JWT-authenticated communication. The other current path is Nextcloud Office powered by Euro-Office, Nextcloud’s first-party default documented for Nextcloud 35. It is convenient for personal use and small teams, while a dedicated document server is the better design as concurrency and availability requirements grow.
The secure choice depends on your file mix, team size and operating model. OOXML-heavy organizations should test ONLYOFFICE conversion behavior with representative DOCX, XLSX and PPTX files. ODF-heavy teams should test the exact Nextcloud Office and Euro-Office versions they intend to run. Whichever route you choose, use certificate-authority-issued TLS, keep JWT enabled where applicable, restrict editor access, and establish a policy that prevents simultaneous editing through unrelated tools.

What can replace Collabora CODE in Nextcloud?
Nextcloud’s current administration documentation describes two office solutions for collaborative editing: Nextcloud Office powered by Euro-Office as the default path, and Collabora Online as a supported alternative based on CODE. If your goal is to move away from a CODE-based deployment, the practical alternatives are therefore:

- Nextcloud Office powered by Euro-Office: the first-party office option documented for Nextcloud 35, available through distribution packages or Docker.
Both alternatives support collaborative editing of text documents, spreadsheets and presentations, and both handle common Microsoft Office and OpenDocument formats, including DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, XLS, XLSX and ODF. The difference is not simply a feature checklist. It is the combination of file-format behavior, deployment topology, access controls, scale and the amount of infrastructure your administrators want to operate.

ONLYOFFICE Docs: the strongest independent alternative
ONLYOFFICE Docs can run on the same computer as Nextcloud or on a separate server. The connector requires the two services to reach one another over the network, so it fits both a small single-host installation and a deliberately separated architecture with a dedicated document-server hostname.
The integration exposes controls that matter in regulated or multi-team environments: administrators can limit editor access to selected groups and decide whether files in external storages may be edited. The documentation also covers review and commenting permissions, spreadsheet filtering, PDF form filling, watermarks and macro controls. Since version 7.2, JWT is enabled by default in ONLYOFFICE Docs and a secret key is generated automatically; the same secret must be configured in Nextcloud so requests can be authenticated and tampering reduced.
Nextcloud Office powered by Euro-Office: the first-party default
Nextcloud Office is the current default documented for Nextcloud 35. It provides real-time, collaborative editing with high-fidelity rendering and can be installed through distribution packages or Docker. Its built-in server is aimed at personal use or small teams. Nextcloud explicitly describes that built-in option as slower than a standalone server and without advanced scalability features, so larger deployments should plan a dedicated service rather than treating the bundled server as an unlimited replacement.

Choose by document format and workflow
When DOCX, XLSX and PPTX dominate
ONLYOFFICE uses OOXML as its editing basis. That can be advantageous when your source files are created and exchanged primarily as DOCX, XLSX and PPTX. It does not guarantee perfect round-tripping, however. Converting non-OOXML files can lose charts, tables, shapes, images or formatting. Non-OOXML files open view-only by default unless an administrator enables conversion.
Before migration, collect real files rather than relying on a blank test document. Include complex tables, tracked revisions, embedded images, charts, custom fonts, formulas, named ranges, slide masters and forms. Open, edit, save and reopen each file, then compare the result with the original desktop workflow. Record any loss as a known limitation instead of assuming every file is interchangeable.
When ODF is the normal format
ODF-heavy teams should test the chosen Nextcloud Office and Euro-Office release against their own templates. The supported-format list is broad, but rendering and feature fidelity can vary with document constructs, fonts and spreadsheet formulas. Keep a small acceptance set of ODT, ODS and ODP files and compare printed or exported output as well as on-screen editing.

When spreadsheets, forms or review work matter
ONLYOFFICE’s documented controls include spreadsheet filtering, review and commenting permissions, and PDF form filling. Those capabilities can influence the choice more than the headline editor. Test the exact roles your teams need: who may edit cells, filter a shared sheet, comment, accept review changes, complete a PDF form or apply a watermark. A feature that exists in the editor is not useful if the connector exposes it to the wrong group.
Build a secure architecture before installing an editor
Design the network path
Choose a dedicated document-server hostname or an internal service address. The browser, Nextcloud server and editor must be able to reach the endpoints required by the connector. A page that loads in an administrator’s browser does not prove that the Nextcloud server can contact the document server; test both directions where the architecture requires them.
A reverse proxy can provide a stable public or internal name, centralize TLS and keep the editor service off the general application network. Restrict inbound access to the proxy or trusted Nextcloud hosts, and avoid exposing an administrative editor endpoint directly to the internet.
Use valid TLS certificates
Keep certificate verification enabled. The ONLYOFFICE documentation describes disabling verification for a self-signed certificate as an insecure temporary workaround and recommends replacing it with a certificate issued by a certificate authority. Treat certificate renewal as an operational dependency: monitor expiry, renew before the deadline and test the connector after every certificate or proxy change.
Protect the JWT secret
For ONLYOFFICE Docs 7.2 and later, JWT is enabled by default and a secret key is generated automatically. Configure the identical secret in the Nextcloud connector and in ONLYOFFICE, store it as a protected secret rather than in general notes, and rotate it deliberately. A mismatch produces authentication failures; exposing it allows an unauthorized party to submit requests that appear to come from a trusted integration.

Map editor access to approved Nextcloud groups. Decide explicitly whether users may edit files stored in external storage systems. Many organizations allow viewing everywhere but permit editing only in managed storage, where retention, auditing and backups are understood.

Control watermarks and macros
Use watermarks when documents must carry an organizational or confidentiality label. Define a macro policy before enabling macro-related functionality: identify which files may contain macros, who can open them, and whether macros are blocked, reviewed or allowed. A permissive default can undermine an otherwise private document service.
Prevent conflicting writers
Editing the same file at the same time in different tools can overwrite or lose changes. Decide whether desktop applications, mobile editors and the web editor may be used concurrently. Nextcloud’s Temporary File Lock application is documented as a way to reduce conflicts; combine it with user guidance and versioned backups rather than relying on locking alone.
Install and configure ONLYOFFICE with Nextcloud
The exact package names vary by operating system, but the sequence below reflects the controls that determine whether the integration is secure and reliable.
- Prepare the host. Choose a server or container host, assign a stable document-server hostname and ensure that Nextcloud can reach it over the required protocol and port. If the services are separated, verify routing and firewall rules before installing the connector.
- Install ONLYOFFICE Docs. Use the deployment method appropriate for your operating system or container platform. Keep the editor on a supported release and document the version so later format testing is reproducible.
- Install the Nextcloud connector. In Nextcloud, open the Apps catalog, find the official ONLYOFFICE integration and install it. Then open the connector settings in the administration area.
- Enter the document-server address. Use the stable HTTPS hostname that Nextcloud and the browser can resolve. Do not substitute a temporary IP address if users will later access the service through a proxy name.
- Configure JWT. Copy the generated ONLYOFFICE secret into the connector’s JWT field, or set a new protected secret on both sides. Save the settings and confirm that the values match exactly.
- Keep TLS verification on. Install a certificate issued by a trusted certificate authority, include the correct hostname and verify the full certificate chain. Do not leave a self-signed-certificate bypass enabled after troubleshooting.
- Set group and storage policy. Restrict editor access to approved groups and decide whether external-storage files may be edited. Apply the narrowest policy that still supports the business workflow.
- Set collaboration safeguards. Configure watermarks, macro controls and the permissions needed for review, comments, spreadsheet filtering and PDF forms. Avoid granting every capability to every group.
- Run a connectivity test. Open a test document from Nextcloud, edit it in a second browser session and confirm that saves, comments and permissions behave as expected. Review server and proxy logs if the connector reports an error.
Deploy Nextcloud Office powered by Euro-Office
- Choose the service size. For personal use or a small team, the built-in server can simplify installation. For sustained concurrent editing, plan a standalone service because the built-in option is slower and does not provide advanced scalability features.
- Select a package or Docker deployment. Nextcloud documents both distribution packages and Docker-based deployment. Keep the editor service on a supported version and record the package or image tag used in production.
- Place the service behind managed HTTPS. Use a trusted certificate, a stable hostname and a reverse proxy where appropriate. Confirm that users’ browsers and the Nextcloud server can reach the service.
- Enable the Nextcloud Office app and connect the service. Use the Office settings in Nextcloud’s administration interface, select the deployed Euro-Office service and save the endpoint. Labels can vary by Nextcloud release, so verify the selected service rather than assuming the built-in server is active.
- Apply group and storage permissions. Keep editing limited to the groups that need it and decide whether external-storage files are writable.
- Test representative files. Open ODT, ODS, ODP, DOCX, XLSX and PPTX samples, perform simultaneous edits and check saved output before inviting the whole organization.
Use a repeatable acceptance test
A short test plan catches the failures that a successful installation screen cannot. Keep copies of the originals and test with ordinary user accounts as well as administrators.

Test files stored in external storage separately from files in native Nextcloud storage. A connector may permit one location and restrict the other by design.

Back up documents and configuration
Back up the Nextcloud data set, database, editor configuration, proxy configuration and secrets-management records. A document backup without the database or configuration may not restore versions, permissions or the connector relationship correctly. Periodically perform a restore test on an isolated system.

Plan updates
Coordinate Nextcloud, the office editor, connector app, operating system, container image and reverse proxy updates. Read release notes for compatibility changes, then rerun the representative-file suite after each upgrade. Keep a rollback path for the editor service and retain a known-good configuration.

Track concurrent sessions, CPU, memory, storage latency and proxy errors. The built-in Nextcloud Office server is explicitly not the scalable option; rising wait times or failed saves are signals to move the document service to a dedicated host rather than simply increasing browser timeouts.
Review access and certificates
Remove former users from editor groups, review external-storage permissions and confirm that the JWT secret remains protected. Monitor certificate expiry and test renewal before production certificates become invalid.
Troubleshoot common failures
The connector cannot reach the editor
Check DNS resolution from both the browser and the Nextcloud server, firewall rules, proxy routes and the certificate hostname. A service reachable only from the administrator’s workstation is not correctly deployed for server-to-server communication.
Authentication fails after setup
Compare the JWT secret character for character on both sides, confirm that JWT is enabled in the editor, and restart or reload the relevant service after changing the secret. Check that the proxy is forwarding the authentication headers required by the connector.

Replace the self-signed certificate with one issued by a trusted certificate authority, include the full chain and ensure that the configured hostname matches the certificate. Do not solve the warning permanently by disabling verification.
A file opens read-only
Determine whether it is a non-OOXML file in an ONLYOFFICE workflow. Such files are view-only by default unless an administrator enables conversion. Also check the user’s group, the external-storage policy and whether another editor currently holds the file.
Changes disappear or versions conflict
Look for simultaneous editing through a desktop application, another web editor or a synchronization client. Apply a consistent locking policy, use the Temporary File Lock application where appropriate, and restore an earlier version from Nextcloud’s version history or backup if an overwrite has already occurred.
A practical migration checklist
- Inventory file types, templates, macros, external storages and concurrent-editing patterns.
- Choose ONLYOFFICE when independent deployment, advanced permission controls or OOXML-centric testing are priorities.
- Choose Nextcloud Office powered by Euro-Office when first-party integration and a small-team deployment are the priorities.
- Assign a stable document-server hostname and verify bidirectional reachability.
- Use CA-issued TLS and keep certificate verification enabled.
- Configure and protect the JWT secret for ONLYOFFICE.
- Restrict editor groups and external-storage editing.
- Define watermark, macro and file-locking policies before migration.
- Test DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, ODF, CSV and PDF samples and record conversion differences.
- Back up data and configuration, test restoration and schedule post-upgrade validation.
Which option is best for your Nextcloud?
Select ONLYOFFICE Docs if you want a separately managed document server, need the documented review, commenting, spreadsheet-filtering or PDF-form controls, or operate a predominantly OOXML-based workflow that you can validate with real files. Its security depends on correct TLS, JWT, network and group configuration; installing the connector alone is not enough.
Select Nextcloud Office powered by Euro-Office if you prefer the first-party default documented for Nextcloud 35 and your deployment is personal or a small team. Move to a standalone architecture when concurrency, response time or availability requirements exceed what the built-in server can provide.
In either case, privacy comes from the deployment you operate: self-hosted storage, controlled network paths, valid certificates, least-privilege access, tested file compatibility and a plan for conflicts and recovery. Those controls matter more than the editor’s name.
