PeaZip is the best all-platform replacement for most people. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD, opens more than 200 archive formats, and combines archive creation, password protection, optional keyfiles, hashing and secure deletion in one open-source application. For a Windows 10 or 11 PC, NanaZip is the better choice if modern File Explorer integration matters more than cross-platform support.
Windows 11 version 24H2 can open ZIP, RAR, 7z and TAR files without an extra archiver, but its built-in tools are intended for convenience. Use a dedicated program when you need encrypted filenames, split volumes, deliberate archive conversion, dependable password workflows or a repeatable security process.

No archiver is automatically safe merely because it is popular or open source. Archive programs parse files supplied by other people, so use official download channels, install current releases and treat self-extracting executables as programs rather than harmless documents.

What makes an archive alternative secure?
Security has several separate parts. A program must be maintained, its parser should have reasonable hardening, and the archive format must provide the protection you actually need. A password that protects file contents may leave filenames, folder names and file sizes visible. Conversely, a strong format does not help if you download an outdated build or share the password in the same message as the archive.

Format support is not the same as format creation
Applications often advertise that they support a format when they can only read or extract it. PeaZip can open and extract more than 200 formats, including 7z, RAR, TAR, ZIP, ISO, CAB and Zstandard, but its creation options depend on the selected write format. Before promising someone a RAR archive, check the program’s current write-format list. A tool may read a RAR file perfectly while offering another format, such as 7z or ZIP, for new archives.
Filename encryption is a separate decision
Basic ZIP encryption does not hide the names of files in the archive. The names can remain visible even when the contents require a password. A 7z archive can encrypt its headers, which hides filenames and directory structure until the correct password is entered. Some RAR workflows support AES-128 or AES-256 content encryption, but interoperability depends on the application and version. If the list of documents is sensitive, choose a format with header or filename encryption and verify the result from a second tool.
Updates matter more than a marketing security label
Archive parsers process attacker-controlled input. CERT-EU described CVE-2024-11477 as a high-severity 7-Zip vulnerability and advised users to update to the latest version. That incident is a reminder to patch every archive handler, including replacements and operating-system components. NanaZip’s Control Flow Guard, shadow-stack support, package-integrity checks, Mark-of-the-Web handling and archive-format restrictions can reduce the impact of a malicious file; they do not make unpatched software or hostile archives safe.

What it supports
PeaZip is a free, open-source archive utility for Windows, macOS, Linux and BSD. Its official feature list says it can open and extract more than 200 archive formats. Common examples include 7z, RAR, TAR, ZIP, ISO, CAB and Zstandard. It can create archives in the formats for which the installed build supplies a writer, so use the format selector rather than assuming every readable format can be produced.
Security controls
PeaZip provides password-based encryption, an encrypted password manager, optional two-factor authentication, secure deletion and file hashing. Its encryption documentation describes a password plus an optional keyfile as two authentication factors for supported workflows. The documented formats include 7Z, ARC, PEA, RAR and ZIP, although the exact algorithms and write capabilities vary by format.

A keyfile is a separate secret file required in addition to the passphrase. Keep it on a different channel from the archive, such as a separately protected removable drive or an independently encrypted transfer. If the keyfile is lost, the password alone will not recover the archive. If the keyfile is sent beside the archive, the second factor provides little practical separation.
Creating an encrypted 7z archive in PeaZip
- Install the current PeaZip build obtained from its official project channel. Avoid repackaged download sites.
- Select the files or folder, right-click and choose the PeaZip command to add them to an archive, or open PeaZip and use its Add/Create archive action.
- In the archive dialog, choose 7z as the format when you need strong compression and filename privacy.
- Enter a long, unique passphrase in the password fields. Do not reuse a password from email, cloud storage or another archive.
- Enable the option to encrypt filenames or archive headers. If that option is not enabled, the file list may remain visible.
- If you need two-factor protection, select the keyfile option and create or choose the keyfile. Store it separately from the archive.
- Choose the destination and create the archive. For valuable data, also enable hashing or record the resulting checksum so a later transfer can be checked.
- Before deleting the originals, open the new archive in a separate PeaZip window or another compatible archiver. Confirm that the password is accepted and that filenames stay hidden until authentication.
When PeaZip is the right choice
- You regularly move archives between Windows, macOS and Linux.
- You need one interface for extraction, creation, conversion, checksums and secure deletion.
- You want an open-source application with password and keyfile options.
- You need to inspect unusual formats such as Zstandard, ISO or CAB as well as ordinary ZIP and 7z files.
Limitations to understand
- Cross-platform availability does not mean identical menus or behavior on every operating system.
- Read support for a format does not guarantee a writer for creating new archives in that format.
- Encryption strength and filename privacy come from the selected format and settings, not from the name PeaZip alone.
NanaZip: the best Windows-focused choice
Why Windows users choose it
NanaZip describes itself as the 7-Zip derivative intended for the modern Windows experience. It is open source and integrates with Windows 11’s context menus and Fluent Design. Smart Extraction can choose an appropriate extraction action, and additional handlers cover formats and containers such as Zstandard, Brotli, LZ4, WebAssembly files, Electron ASAR packages and .NET single-file bundles.

The modern NanaZip flavor targets Windows. Its core or classic variants are the route for non-Windows compatibility, so NanaZip should not be treated as a cross-platform macOS or Linux graphical replacement. Obtain it through a project-hosted channel such as the Microsoft Store or the project’s GitHub releases, and keep it updated.
Security mitigations
NanaZip adds mitigations including Control Flow Guard, shadow-stack support, package-integrity verification, Mark-of-the-Web handling and restrictions around archive formats. These measures are useful when a parser receives a crafted archive, but they complement—not replace—prompt patching, least-privilege extraction and caution with unknown files.
Creating a filename-encrypted archive in NanaZip
- Select the files in File Explorer, right-click and open the NanaZip archive command, then choose Add to archive or its equivalent.
- Set the format to 7z. This is the practical choice when the file list itself must be confidential.
- Enter and confirm a unique passphrase.
- Turn on the setting labeled Encrypt file names, Encrypt headers or equivalent. The wording can change between releases.
- Choose the output path and create the archive.
- Test extraction in a new folder. A correct test should request authentication before revealing the internal filenames.
NanaZip is especially convenient when most of your work starts in File Explorer and you want a familiar 7-Zip-derived engine without the older-looking shell experience. It is less suitable when the same archive workflow must be identical on macOS and Linux.

Windows 11’s built-in archive support
What version 24H2 can do
Microsoft documents support in Windows 11 version 24H2 for ZIP, RAR, 7z and TAR archives. For a routine download, you can double-click an archive in File Explorer and use the available extraction command. This avoids installing another parser for a one-off task.
Where the built-in tool falls short
Windows’ convenience handling is not a complete replacement for a dedicated security workflow. Microsoft warns that files added to a zipped folder may be unencrypted when they are unzipped, which can expose sensitive information. Do not assume that putting a password on a ZIP gives you encrypted filenames, authenticated integrity or a reliable cross-platform result.
Use a dedicated archiver when you need to create encrypted archives, hide headers, use a keyfile, split a large archive into volumes, convert between formats, verify checksums or repeat the same process on several machines. If an archive contains confidential material, verify it with a second compatible tool before deleting the unencrypted originals.
Safe quick extraction
- Confirm that the PC is running Windows 11 version 24H2 or a later supported release.
- Save the archive to a location where you can identify it, rather than opening an attachment directly from a mail or chat preview.
- Right-click the file and choose the extraction option, or open it and select Extract all.
- Extract into a new, disposable folder when the sender or contents are not fully trusted.
- Scan the extracted files with your security software before opening documents or running programs.

How to choose an encryption format
Choose 7z when the file list is confidential
Use 7z with header or filename encryption for tax records, legal documents, private photographs, credentials and other material where even the names reveal information. A recipient normally needs a compatible archiver rather than only the operating system’s basic ZIP commands.
Choose ZIP for maximum compatibility only when its exposure is acceptable
ZIP opens almost everywhere, which is valuable for ordinary, non-sensitive transfers. Basic ZIP does not hide filenames, however, and encryption behavior varies by implementation. If you choose ZIP for compatibility, inspect what remains visible before sending it and do not describe it as filename-confidential.

Use a keyfile only when you can manage it
A keyfile improves separation between the archive and its second secret, but it creates an additional recovery responsibility. Keep a protected backup of the keyfile, transfer it independently and test recovery on a machine that does not contain the originals. A forgotten keyfile is not recoverable through the passphrase.

Windows
For an ordinary ZIP, Windows 11’s built-in extractor is sufficient. Install NanaZip when you want fast context-menu actions, 7z header encryption or additional format handlers. Install PeaZip when you also use macOS or Linux, need conversion and hashing, or want keyfile and secure-deletion controls.
macOS
PeaZip is the researched option in this comparison with an official macOS build and broad RAR, 7z, TAR and ZIP extraction support. Use it for encrypted archives and verify that the selected format can be created before promising a particular output to a Windows recipient.
Linux and BSD
PeaZip provides Linux and BSD builds and is the simplest route when a graphical, multi-format workflow is required. For automated jobs, confirm the command-line or batch options in the installed version and record the format, compression and encryption settings alongside the job.
Safe handling and update checklist
- Download the archiver from its official project channel, not a third-party bundle.
- Install current updates before opening unfamiliar archives.
- Do not run a self-extracting executable merely because its filename ends in an archive-like extension; it is a program.
- Extract unknown material into a disposable directory with the least privilege needed.
- Keep work archives separate from system folders and application directories.
- Use long, unique passphrases and never send the passphrase in the same channel as the archive.
- Verify encrypted archives by attempting a test extraction before deleting the source files.
- For high-value transfers, compare a checksum or hash and perform a second-tool extraction test.
Troubleshooting common problems
The archive opens, but filenames are visible
The archive was probably created as basic ZIP or without header encryption. Recreate it as 7z and enable the setting that encrypts filenames or headers. Changing the filename extension does not add encryption.
A password works in one program but not another
Check the format, encryption method and whether a keyfile was used. Some applications support only a subset of another program’s encryption options. Recreate the archive with a broadly supported format and record the exact settings for the recipient.
You cannot create a RAR archive
Read support and write support are different. Confirm that the installed application provides a RAR writer and that its licensing and version permit creation. If not, create a 7z archive or another format that the recipient can open.
The right-click menu is missing
Confirm that the application was installed for the current user, restart File Explorer or sign out and back in, and check the program’s integration settings. On systems where shell integration is intentionally disabled, open the archiver directly and use its Add or Extract command.

Download it again, compare a supplied checksum if one exists and try a second current archiver. A damaged transfer, incomplete split volume or incompatible encryption method can produce similar messages. Do not delete the only original until a complete extraction succeeds.
Security software blocks an archive
Do not bypass the warning just to inspect the contents. Confirm the sender, scan the file through your normal security controls and extract it in an isolated disposable location if inspection is necessary. A self-extracting archive deserves the same caution as any executable.
Verdict
Choose PeaZip if you need the most capable, cross-platform replacement for both opening and creating archives. Choose NanaZip if you are committed to Windows and value a modern Explorer workflow built on a 7-Zip-derived engine. Use Windows 11’s built-in support for quick, ordinary extraction, but move to a dedicated archiver for encrypted filenames, keyfiles, archive conversion, checksums or sensitive data. Whatever you choose, keep it patched and treat every untrusted archive as potentially hostile input.
