Best overall: choose a 24–27-inch 1080p IPS monitor with a 60–100Hz refresh rate, an adjustable stand, and the HDMI, DisplayPort, or video-capable USB-C input your computer already supports. That combination gives OBS, Twitch chat, Discord, maps, and browser guides enough room without paying for performance you will not use. Choose a higher-refresh model only if the second panel will also display competitive gameplay.

Start with the second monitor’s job

A second display is an extension of your workflow, not automatically a second gaming monitor. During a stream, the primary screen should stay focused on the game while the side panel holds OBS controls, chat, alerts, stream health, Discord, a game guide, a map, or a browser. Text clarity, window space, ports, and stand adjustment matter more for that role than extreme refresh rates.

LG’s multi-monitor guidance describes keeping gameplay on the main display and using the second for chat, stats, or other content. MSI gives the same esports rationale: gameplay remains on the primary monitor while Discord, team communication, a game guide, a map, or live chat stays visible on the second. Those tasks are mostly static, so a sensible productivity-oriented monitor is usually a better purchase than a second flagship gaming panel.

Choose the specification tier that matches your use

Second-screen workload Practical specification Why it fits
Chat, OBS, stream controls, browser guides 24–27 inches, 1920×1080, IPS, 60–100Hz, height/tilt adjustment Readable text, enough room for several narrow windows, and modest graphics demand.
Chat plus occasional video or casual games 24–27 inches, 1080p or QHD, 75–144Hz if available, adjustable stand Higher refresh makes scrolling and motion feel smoother without making it a competitive-gaming purchase.
A second screen that may host esports play 1080p with a genuinely high refresh rate, low stated response time, VRR, and suitable inputs The display must meet gaming requirements as well as productivity needs.

If you are unsure, the first row is the safest default. Spend the difference on a stand that pivots and on the correct cable rather than on a refresh rate you will never use.

Size and resolution: 24-inch versus 27-inch, 1080p versus QHD

24-inch 1080p: compact and easy to place

A 24-inch Full HD panel keeps pixel density familiar and fits beside a larger gaming monitor on a typical desk. It works well when the side screen will show a single chat column, a compact OBS layout, or a guide next to the game. Its smaller footprint also makes portrait orientation practical without making the top of the display tower over your main panel.

27-inch 1080p: larger windows at the same desktop workload

A 27-inch 1920×1080 monitor gives each application more physical space. That is useful when OBS, a browser guide, and chat need to remain open at once, or when you sit farther from the desk. Text is not as dense as on a 24-inch 1080p panel, so check that the monitor’s scaling and your viewing distance make small interface labels comfortable.

The Dell P2725HE illustrates this productivity-focused format: TechRadar lists a 27-inch Full HD panel, 300-nit brightness, and 99% sRGB coverage. Those figures describe the listed product configuration; they are not an independent ranking of streaming monitors.

When QHD or 4K is worth it

QHD and 4K put more information on screen, which can reduce scrolling in a dashboard or let you keep more browser content visible. They also cost more in many product lines and require more graphics bandwidth than 1080p. For a side display that mostly shows text and controls, the extra pixels are a workspace choice rather than a streaming requirement. Confirm that your computer, dock, and cable can drive the chosen resolution at the refresh rate you want before buying.

Refresh rate: do you need 144Hz on the second monitor?

For chat and OBS, 60–100Hz is enough

Chat messages, OBS controls, statistics, and a static guide do not need the same refresh rate as a competitive game. A 60–100Hz monitor is the practical range for this role. It keeps scrolling and window movement reasonably smooth while limiting cost and the bandwidth demanded from the graphics output.

Choose more only when the panel will also be used for play

A higher refresh rate becomes meaningful when the second display may show a game, a practice client, or fast camera movement. In that case, compare refresh rate with response time, variable-refresh-rate support, resolution, and the available HDMI or DisplayPort standard. Do not buy a 144Hz panel solely because a chat window is open on it.

Extreme esports specifications are a different category

ASUS lists the ROG Strix XG248QSG Ace at 610Hz overclocked, 1920×1080 resolution, and a 0.1ms response time. The same specification list names a 24.1-inch Super TN panel, variable refresh rate, DisplayHDR 400, and HDMI 2.1. That is an appropriate comparison point for someone who might play competitively on the second display; it is considerably more capability than chat-only users need. The 610Hz figure is specifically an overclocked rating, so treat it as a mode that depends on the monitor and system settings rather than as a universal operating rate.

Connectivity determines whether the setup works

Check the computer before choosing the monitor

Look at the graphics card, laptop, or dock and identify an unused HDMI, DisplayPort, or video-capable USB-C output. MSI explicitly recommends checking these outputs before planning a dual-monitor setup. A USB-C socket is not automatically a display output: it must support video over an appropriate alternate mode or through a dock that provides a video connection.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  1. Write down the outputs already occupied by your primary monitor.
  2. Identify one spare HDMI, DisplayPort, or video-capable USB-C connection on the computer or dock.
  3. Check the monitor’s input type and the cable or adapter required to connect those two ends.
  4. Confirm that the connection supports the target resolution and refresh rate; an adapter can reduce the available mode even when the monitor itself supports more.

USB-C and docking considerations

A dock can simplify a laptop setup, but its video output still has to support the second monitor’s resolution and refresh rate. If the dock shares bandwidth with other displays or peripherals, the available mode may be lower than the monitor’s headline specification. When troubleshooting, connect the monitor directly to the laptop or graphics card first; that separates a dock limitation from a monitor or operating-system problem.

Useful ports on a productivity-oriented display

The Dell P2725HE example shows why a side monitor can function as a desk hub. Its listed connections include HDMI, DisplayPort input and output, USB-C upstream, USB-A, USB-C downstream, and RJ45 Ethernet. DisplayPort output can help with a daisy-chain arrangement when the computer and monitor support it, but a simple direct connection is easier to diagnose and is sufficient for most streaming desks.

Ergonomics and placement matter every time you glance away

Look for height, tilt, and pivot adjustment

Height adjustment lets you align the top edges of both displays, reducing the repeated head movement caused by one panel sitting much higher. Tilt adjustment helps eliminate reflections and keeps the viewing angle comfortable. Pivot adjustment is essential if you want to rotate the second monitor into portrait orientation for chat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Landscape orientation

Use landscape when the panel will show OBS, a wide dashboard, a browser guide with maps, or several windows side by side. Place it close enough that a quick eye movement reveals chat without forcing you to turn away from the game. Keep the main gaming monitor directly in front of you and angle the second panel inward slightly if needed.

Portrait orientation

Portrait mode creates a tall, narrow column that suits a fast-moving Twitch chat, a long Discord channel, or a vertical list of stream events. It is less suitable for wide maps, timeline-based editors, or an OBS layout with several horizontal panels. Rotate the display in the operating system after physically pivoting it, and make sure the stand locks securely before placing it beside the primary monitor.

Recommended models by use case

Dell P2725HE: productivity-first value choice

The Dell P2725HE is a strong fit when the second display will spend most of its time on OBS, Discord, live chat, and guides. TechRadar’s listing specifies a 27-inch Full HD panel, 300-nit brightness, and 99% sRGB, along with HDMI, DisplayPort input and output, USB-C upstream, USB-A, USB-C downstream, and RJ45 Ethernet. That combination prioritizes workspace and connectivity over competitive-gaming features.

The listed information does not establish the monitor’s maximum refresh rate, response-time performance, power draw, or an independent eye-strain ranking. Do not infer those values from the port count or color-coverage figure. Verify the current model revision, stand features, price, and regional availability before purchase.

ASUS ROG Strix XG248QSG Ace: high-refresh option

The ROG Strix XG248QSG Ace is aimed at buyers who want the second panel to remain viable for esports play. ASUS lists a 24.1-inch 1920×1080 Super TN panel, 610Hz overclocked refresh, 0.1ms response time, variable refresh rate, DisplayHDR 400, and HDMI 2.1. Those are gaming-oriented specifications that exceed what a chat-and-guides screen requires.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Its smaller 24.1-inch size can be easier to align with a primary monitor and to rotate, but the 1080p resolution offers less workspace than a larger QHD panel. The listed information does not provide brightness, color-gamut, connectivity beyond the named HDMI 2.1 feature, price, or measured streaming-workload results. Treat the model as a high-refresh alternative, not as proof that a 610Hz display improves OBS or chat.

Install the second monitor without disrupting your stream

  1. Power down unnecessary variables. If you are adding a monitor to a desktop, leave the primary display connected and close games or recording software while you make the hardware connection.
  2. Connect the correct output. Use the spare HDMI, DisplayPort, or video-capable USB-C output identified during your compatibility check. Match the cable and adapter rating to the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use.
  3. Turn on the monitor and select its input. Choose the HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C input that matches the connected cable. If the screen reports no signal, reseat both ends before changing software settings.
  4. Set the gaming panel as primary. In your operating system’s display settings, designate the main gaming monitor as the primary display. This keeps games, full-screen applications, and notifications where you expect them.
  5. Extend rather than mirror. Select an extended desktop so OBS, chat, guides, and maps can occupy the second panel independently. Mirroring duplicates the game and wastes the extra workspace.
  6. Arrange the virtual displays. Drag the display icons to match their physical left-right order. Apply the setting and move the pointer across the shared edge to confirm the arrangement.
  7. Set orientation and scale. Keep the second display in landscape for wide dashboards, or choose portrait for a narrow chat column. Adjust text scaling if interface labels are difficult to read at native 1080p.
  8. Place applications deliberately. Move OBS controls, chat, Discord, guides, and maps to the second screen. Save window layouts in the applications that support them so a reboot does not return every panel to the primary display.
  9. Test a real stream scene. Start OBS, open the chat and guide pages you normally use, and launch the game. Check that the cursor crosses displays predictably and that alerts, audio controls, and stream status remain visible.

Troubleshoot the problems that appear most often

The monitor shows no signal

  • Confirm that the monitor is on the input matching the cable.
  • Reseat the cable at the computer and monitor, then test a different known-good cable if available.
  • Bypass the dock or adapter and connect directly to the laptop or graphics card to isolate a compatibility problem.
  • Verify that the USB-C port carries video; a charging or data-only USB-C port will not produce an image.
  • Restart the computer with both displays connected so the operating system can redetect them.

The desired refresh rate is missing

Check the operating system’s advanced display settings and the monitor’s on-screen menu. The cable, adapter, dock, or output standard may limit the available mode. If you are using an overclocked mode such as the ASUS model’s 610Hz setting, enable it only after confirming that the display and connection remain stable.

Games stutter after adding the second display

Start by lowering the second monitor to a standard refresh rate, especially if it is running an unusually high mode while the game is on the primary panel. Close unnecessary animated browser tabs, update the graphics driver, and retest before replacing hardware. A side display showing static chat rarely needs an aggressive refresh setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows or OBS opens on the wrong screen

Recheck the primary-display designation and the virtual display arrangement. Move the application to the intended monitor, close it there, and reopen it; many programs remember their last position. For a game that insists on the wrong display, use its display-selection option or switch from exclusive full-screen to borderless mode if that option is available.

Portrait chat is clipped or rotated incorrectly

Set the physical pivot first, then select portrait orientation in display settings. Confirm that display scaling is applied to the rotated panel and that the chat application is maximized after rotation. If the stand cannot hold the panel securely in portrait, keep the monitor in landscape rather than relying on an unstable improvised mount.

A buying checklist for streamers

  • Define the workload: chat and guides, mixed productivity and gaming, or competitive play on both screens.
  • Pick the practical baseline: 24–27-inch 1080p IPS at 60–100Hz for most streaming desks.
  • Buy more refresh only with a reason: choose a gaming-tier panel when the second display will actually show fast gameplay.
  • Verify the input: match HDMI, DisplayPort, or video-capable USB-C to a free output on the graphics card, laptop, or dock.
  • Check the cable and adapter: ensure they support the target resolution and refresh rate instead of assuming every cable delivers the monitor’s maximum.
  • Prioritize the stand: height, tilt, and pivot adjustment affect daily comfort and make portrait chat practical.
  • Check workspace: 24 inches is easier to fit; 27 inches gives larger windows; QHD or 4K adds workspace but increases graphics and bandwidth requirements.
  • Verify the exact listing: monitor revisions, included cables, pricing, and regional availability can change, so confirm them at the time of purchase.
  • Do not overread headline numbers: no common independent test statistic establishes latency, power use, or eye-strain superiority for these models in streaming-chat workloads.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
