1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you want to inspect the pages behind a result instead of accepting an opaque answer, choose a search service whose source model matches your goal. Kagi is the best fit for broad, ad-free research because it combines its own indexes with anonymized calls to major providers and specialist sources. Brave Search is the strongest free choice when you want an independent index and user-controlled re-ranking. Startpage suits people who want a privacy-oriented, conventional search experience. Mojeek is the specialist option for a private service that crawls the web itself.
Those recommendations are not interchangeable. An independent crawler reduces dependence on a single upstream index; a multi-source service increases the number and kinds of inputs used to retrieve results. A privacy layer changes how your query is handled, but does not automatically mean the service owns the index underneath. Understanding that distinction is the key to finding visible, inspectable source links.

What to look for when source links matter
A useful source-first search result does more than provide a plausible summary. It should let you see which page supports a claim, open that page, compare it with other results and judge the publisher for yourself. That makes link visibility a workflow requirement rather than a cosmetic preference.
Start by separating four questions:
- Can you identify the underlying page? A result should expose a destination you can inspect, not merely an answer with no clear provenance.
- How many retrieval inputs are available? A service may have one crawler, combine several indexes, or add specialist databases.
- Can you shape the result set? Site blocking, re-ranking and other controls help when a result page is crowded with material you do not trust.
- What happens to your query? Privacy, telemetry and advertising practices affect whether the search process itself is comfortable for you.
These criteria produce different winners. There is no single “best” replacement for every search because source breadth, index independence, privacy and control are separate properties.

Two search models that solve different problems
Independent-index engines
An independent-index engine maintains its own crawl and ranking data. Brave Search says its results come from an independent web index, and Mojeek is identified by Brown University IT as a UK private search engine using its own crawler. This model gives you an alternative to services that obtain results through a syndication agreement.
Independence does not guarantee that every query will have the most complete coverage. A newer or smaller crawler can miss pages that a large index has already discovered. Its value is structural: you are less dependent on one upstream index, and you can compare what a separate crawl finds.
Multi-source and privacy-layer services
Kagi documents a hybrid approach. It lists its Teclis web index, TinyGem news index, anonymized calls to major search providers and vertical sources such as Wolfram Alpha, Wikipedia and other APIs. This can widen retrieval inputs without requiring you to run separate searches across several sites.
Startpage should be treated more narrowly from the evidence available here. Its support center documents private search and instructions for setting it as a default engine. Those materials establish a privacy-oriented conventional search experience, but they do not verify every claim about the providers behind its results. Do not assume that a privacy layer also means an independent crawler.
Kagi’s own comparison documentation states: “Having a single-index source may be limiting.” That is a useful way to frame the trade-off: multiple sources can broaden retrieval, while an independent index changes who supplies the crawl in the first place.

Kagi: best for broad, ad-free source hunting
Kagi is the most capable fit when your priority is to gather many possible sources and then inspect them yourself. Its documented mix of first-party indexes, anonymized calls to major providers and specialist APIs gives it more than one retrieval path. For a research query, that means you can look beyond a single crawler’s coverage without manually repeating the same search elsewhere.
Recommended Free Tools
Why it works for source-focused research
- Several source types: Teclis covers the web, TinyGem covers news, and vertical integrations add structured or reference-oriented material.
- Site blocking: You can remove domains that repeatedly produce low-value or unwanted results, keeping the visible result list focused on sources you are willing to read.
- Ad-free model: The comparison material describes Kagi as ad-free, which keeps the page centered on search results rather than paid placements.
- Zero search telemetry: The same material lists zero search telemetry, a meaningful distinction for readers who do not want their queries recorded for measurement.
Kagi is therefore the strongest recommendation for a user who values breadth, filtering and a clean page at the same time. Its hybrid design also means “Kagi result” does not necessarily mean “Kagi crawler result”; the service can draw on multiple sources. If you need to know exactly which index supplied a particular result, inspect the result details and the linked page rather than assuming a single origin.
When to choose something else
Choose an independent-index engine instead if your primary concern is reducing dependence on major upstream providers. Kagi’s breadth comes partly from anonymized calls to those providers, so it solves source diversity rather than eliminating every upstream relationship. Also confirm current pricing separately; the cited comparison does not provide a price.
Brave Search: best free independent index with re-ranking
Brave Search is the clearest choice when you want an independent index without paying for the search service identified in the material. Brave says Search uses its own independent web index. That gives you a result set produced from a different crawl than the comprehensive indexes maintained by Google and Bing.

Goggles and user-controlled ranking
Its distinctive control is Goggles. Brave describes Goggles as a way to re-rank results on top of its independent index. In practical terms, the index supplies the candidates and the rule set changes their order. That is different from replacing the index: a Goggle does not create pages that the crawler never found.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThis makes Brave useful when you need prominent links from particular kinds of sites. You can use re-ranking rules to emphasize or de-emphasize domains and categories, then open the resulting pages to verify the claims. Because the control operates on Brave’s index, it is most useful after you have decided that the index’s coverage is acceptable for your subject.
Trade-offs
The cited material does not establish Brave’s telemetry policy, advertising model or pricing beyond identifying it as a free option. Treat those as separate questions and check current documentation. Brave’s independent index also represents a different coverage choice, not a guarantee that every obscure page will appear. For high-stakes research, compare important findings with another engine.
Startpage: best for a private conventional search experience
Startpage fits readers who want familiar search behavior while putting privacy first. Its official support center documents private search and explains how to set the service as a default search engine. That is enough to recommend it for a privacy-oriented workflow in which you still want a conventional list of linked results.
What the available evidence supports
- Private search is explicitly documented by Startpage’s support material.
- Default-engine setup is documented, so you can make it the search option your browser uses when you type in the address bar.
- The available material does not verify every claim about the underlying providers.
The last point matters. Do not describe Startpage as an independent crawler unless current documentation establishes that. A privacy service and an independent index are different categories, and the distinction affects how you interpret coverage and source diversity.

Who should pick it
Choose Startpage when your main requirement is a private, conventional result page and you do not need custom re-ranking or a documented first-party crawler. If you are investigating a narrow technical subject, run a parallel check on an independent-index engine so that privacy and index independence are not being treated as the same feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Mojeek: best when the crawler itself matters
Mojeek is the specialist choice for readers who specifically want a private service with its own crawl. Brown University IT identifies it as a UK private search engine using its own crawler. That combination makes it relevant when you want to see what an independent crawl returns rather than another presentation layer over a large provider.
Why an own-crawler result is useful
Independent crawling gives you a genuinely different retrieval path. It can surface pages that rank differently elsewhere, expose gaps in larger engines and provide a second view when a result set feels overly uniform. The benefit is comparative: you learn whether a source appears across indexes or only in one.
Limitations to plan for
The cited material does not specify Mojeek’s advertising model, price or extra ranking controls. It also does not claim that its index is comprehensive. Use it as an independent perspective, especially for verification, rather than assuming it replaces every larger index for every query.

You are conducting broad research
Start with Kagi. Its combination of Teclis, TinyGem, anonymized provider calls and vertical sources is designed for breadth. Use site blocking when recurring domains obscure the links you actually want to inspect. Open several primary or specialist pages instead of relying on the first result.
Best Value
You want a free alternative with ranking control
Use Brave Search. Begin with its independent index, then apply Goggles when you need to re-rank the visible results. Keep in mind that re-ranking changes order, not the underlying set of pages available to the index.
You want private conventional search
Use Startpage. Set it as your browser’s default through the setup instructions in its support center, then evaluate the linked pages directly. Do not infer an independent index from the privacy positioning alone.
You want an independent crawler for comparison
Use Mojeek as a second opinion or as your primary engine when crawler independence is the deciding factor. Compare the links it returns with those from another engine to identify coverage differences.
You are checking whether a claim has a stable source
Run the query on an independent-index engine and a multi-source service. Record which pages appear in both sets, then open the original pages and check publication date, author, methodology and references. Agreement between engines is not proof, but disagreement tells you where more scrutiny is needed.
A source-first search workflow
- Write the claim as a question. Include the product version, location, date or technical term that determines which sources are relevant.
- Choose the retrieval model. Use Kagi when you need multiple source types, Brave or Mojeek when an independent index is important, and Startpage when private conventional search is the priority.
- Scan the visible links before reading summaries. Note the publisher, page title, date and destination. A result that cannot be traced to a page is not sufficient for verification.
- Apply controls deliberately. Use Kagi’s site blocking to remove recurring low-value domains or Brave’s Goggles to re-rank the independent-index results. Keep a record of any rule that materially changes the list.
- Open the original page. Check whether it actually supports the statement you are investigating. Search snippets can omit qualifiers, dates and exceptions.
- Cross-check important claims. Repeat the search with a different model, preferably one that changes the index source rather than merely the interface.
- Save the source details. Record the exact URL, page date and relevant passage so that your conclusion remains auditable if rankings change.
Why index ownership changes what you see
The Congressional Research Service distinguishes Google and Bing as services that maintain comprehensive indexes. It also notes that many other engines obtain access through syndication agreements. That distinction explains why two search pages can look different while drawing from related upstream data, and why an independent index is a meaningful comparison point.
Index ownership is not a simple quality ranking. A comprehensive index may offer extensive coverage, while an independent crawler may provide a valuable alternative perspective. A multi-source service can add news and specialist databases, but it may still include results obtained from major providers. Decide which dependency you are trying to reduce: missing sources, a single crawler, unwanted tracking or a crowded result page.
How to verify changing details
Search products evolve quickly. Recheck four details before adopting one as your default:
- Pricing: The cited material does not provide current prices for the services in this comparison.
- Index composition: Providers can add or remove crawlers, syndication partners and vertical APIs.
- AI features: A generated answer can change how links are displayed; verify whether the interface still exposes the pages you need.
- Referral or partner terms: Treat any claim about eligibility or a commercial relationship as unverified until a current publisher or referral page confirms it.
For a source-link workflow, the durable test is simple: can you identify, open and evaluate the page behind the result? The best engine is the one whose index model, privacy posture and controls let you do that consistently.
