Its electrical chest-strap sensor supports ANT+ and Bluetooth and Polar rates its replaceable battery for up to 400 hours (a manufacturer claim). Choose Garmin HRM-Pro Plus instead if you use a Garmin ecosystem and want running-dynamics data. Choose Polar Verity Sense if you dislike chest straps and prefer an optical armband with internal workout recording.
A screenless monitor has no display of its own. It measures your pulse and sends the data to a watch, cycling computer, phone, indoor-training platform or compatible fitness equipment. The right choice depends less on a universal accuracy ranking—none is established by the available evidence—than on sensing method, comfort, connectivity, recording needs and battery upkeep.

What a screenless heart-rate monitor does
The sensor sits on your chest, upper arm or temple, detects heart rate and transmits that information to another device. You see the number on the receiving watch, bike computer, phone app or trainer software rather than on the sensor. This keeps the hardware small and removes the distraction of a second screen during a run or ride.
Screenless models are useful when you want heart-rate zones, interval feedback, training-load data or a record of a workout without wearing a full-featured sports watch. They can also provide a heart-rate source for indoor cycling equipment and apps that accept ANT+ or Bluetooth sensors.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Electrical chest straps detect the heart’s electrical signal through electrodes against the skin. They are the conventional choice for rapid interval changes and cycling-computer use.
- Optical armbands use light to estimate blood-volume changes under the skin. They are often more comfortable for people who dislike chest compression, but placement and tightness affect the signal.
Neither category has a display, GPS or training dashboard by itself. Those functions belong to the device or service receiving the broadcast, if your setup includes one.

Polar H10: best overall for direct training data
Why it stands out
Polar’s product information specifies Bluetooth and ANT+ connectivity and ECG heart-rate tracking. That combination lets one sensor serve a Bluetooth phone or watch, an ANT+ cycling computer and compatible indoor-training equipment, provided the receiving device supports the required profile and does not impose a connection limit. The replaceable coin-cell battery is rated for up to 400 hours by Polar, and the textile strap detaches for washing.

It is also a straightforward choice for a cyclist who wants to pair a sensor with a head unit, phone and indoor trainer ecosystem over the course of a season.
Who should buy it
- Runners who want a chest strap for intervals and zone-based workouts.
- Cyclists pairing heart rate with an ANT+ bike computer or Bluetooth training app.
- Households that share equipment and value a replaceable battery rather than frequent charging.
- Users who want a washable, detachable textile strap for regular maintenance.
What to check before purchase
The 400-hour number is a manufacturer claim, not an independent laboratory result. Confirm that your watch, phone or training platform can accept the H10’s ANT+ or Bluetooth signal and check how many simultaneous connections your particular setup allows. If you need a workout saved while no receiving device is present, verify that requirement separately; the supplied H10 information does not establish internal recording.
Garmin HRM-Pro Plus: best for Garmin running dynamics
Metrics beyond heart rate
Garmin states that HRM-Pro Plus transmits real-time data over ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy and works with Garmin watches, cycling computers, compatible fitness equipment and apps. Its differentiator is running-dynamics information, including vertical oscillation, ground-contact time, stride length and vertical ratio. Those metrics can help a compatible Garmin setup analyze form alongside pace and heart rate.

Battery and ownership
Garmin claims up to one year of battery life and uses a tool-free battery door. “Up to one year” is a manufacturer estimate rather than a guaranteed interval; transmission frequency, storage conditions and training volume affect the result. A tool-free door is useful when you need to replace the coin cell without carrying a specialized screwdriver.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Who should choose it
- Garmin-watch owners who want the sensor’s running-dynamics fields in their existing reports.
- Runners who train with form metrics as well as heart-rate zones.
- Cyclists who already use compatible Garmin or ANT+/Bluetooth equipment and prefer a long claimed replacement interval.
If you only need heart rate and do not use Garmin’s running-dynamics ecosystem, the extra metrics may not justify selecting this model over a simpler chest strap. Confirm which dynamics fields your specific Garmin device displays; compatibility can vary by watch and activity profile.
Polar Verity Sense: best chest-strap alternative
How it is worn
Verity Sense is an optical heart-rate monitor designed for the upper arm or temple. Polar describes it as offering “maximum freedom of movement and multiple options for viewing and recording your workouts.” The arm placement avoids the band around the rib cage, which can be decisive for runners who find chest straps restrictive or irritating.
Connectivity and recording
The sensor supports Bluetooth and ANT+ and has internal memory. You can transmit to a watch, phone or training app when one is available, or record a workout in the sensor and review it later. Polar’s support comparison lists 20 hours of operation. That is a rechargeable operating-time figure, so regular charging is part of ownership.
Fit matters more with optical sensing
Wear the sensor firmly on the upper arm or in the supported temple position so it does not slide during arm swing or cycling. A loose band, placement over clothing, cold skin or heavy movement can make an optical signal less stable. The freedom from a chest strap is the main reason to choose Verity Sense; it is not evidence that optical sensing is universally more accurate than an electrical strap.
Chest strap or optical armband?
| Question | Chest strap | Optical armband |
|---|---|---|
| How it senses | Electrical signal through electrodes on the chest | Light-based estimate of blood-volume changes |
| Typical strength | Direct, low-latency response for intervals and changing effort | Comfort and freedom from a rib-cage strap |
| Fit priority | Electrodes must stay in contact; strap should be snug but not painful | Sensor must remain stable on the arm or temple |
| Maintenance | Rinse and wash the textile strap as directed; replace the coin cell when needed | Recharge the unit and keep the optical contact area clean |
| Best use case | Hard running intervals, racing and cycling computers | Everyday training when chest comfort is the limiting factor |
Choose the method you will wear consistently. A theoretically faster signal is of little value if the strap stays in a drawer, while an armband that you wear reliably can produce a more complete training record.

ANT+ versus Bluetooth: make the compatibility check first
ANT+
ANT+ is common in cycling computers, gym equipment and some watches. It is useful when several compatible devices need to discover a sensor in a sports setup. Check the receiving device’s sensor menu and confirm that it supports an ANT+ heart-rate profile.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is common on phones, tablets, watches and indoor-training applications. Pair the sensor from the app or device’s “add heart-rate sensor” screen rather than from the phone’s general Bluetooth settings when the app gives its own pairing flow.
Simultaneous connections
Having both protocols does not guarantee unlimited simultaneous connections. A sensor may be paired to one combination of devices while your watch, phone or trainer competes for the same connection. Look at the receiving device’s documentation and test the exact arrangement before a race or important workout.

How to set up a screenless monitor
- Identify the receiving device. Decide whether the session will use a watch, cycling computer, phone app, indoor-training platform or the sensor’s internal memory.
- Check the protocol. Confirm ANT+, Bluetooth or both on the receiving device. If you plan to use two devices, verify their simultaneous-connection rules.
- Prepare the sensor. Install or activate the battery according to the model’s instructions. For a chest strap, moisten the electrode areas before putting it on; for an optical unit, charge it and clean the optical window.
- Fit it securely. Place a chest strap below the pectoral muscles and tighten it so it does not move. Place an armband where the manufacturer specifies and tighten it enough to prevent sliding without restricting circulation.
- Pair from the workout device. Open the device or app’s sensors menu, choose “heart rate,” wake the sensor and select its identifier. Avoid pairing the same sensor to an unused device nearby, which can make troubleshooting confusing.
- Start a short test. Walk, jog or pedal for several minutes and confirm that the receiving screen shows a plausible heart-rate value. Test intervals if rapid changes are important to your training.
- Choose recording mode. If no watch or phone will be present, enable the Verity Sense’s internal recording workflow if that is your model. The supplied H10 and HRM-Pro Plus information does not establish internal recording, so do not assume they store a standalone workout.
Use-case recommendations
Running intervals and races
Start with Polar H10 when fast response and a stable chest contact are priorities. Garmin users who already analyze vertical oscillation, ground-contact time, stride length or vertical ratio should consider HRM-Pro Plus so those running-dynamics fields can join the same Garmin workflow. Whichever you choose, pair and test it during an ordinary workout before relying on it for race pacing.
Steady endurance running
Either a chest strap or Verity Sense can work. Select the strap you can wear for the full duration without chafing or slipping. For runners who remove chest straps after an hour, the armband’s comfort and internal recording may produce a more useful record even with its 20-hour operating limit.
Outdoor cycling
Check the bike computer’s protocol first. Polar H10 and Verity Sense provide ANT+ and Bluetooth, while HRM-Pro Plus provides ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy. Use the protocol that leaves your head unit and other accessories connected reliably, and confirm the sensor appears in the computer’s heart-rate sensor list before rolling out.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Indoor cycling
Most indoor setups involve a trainer, a phone or tablet and an app. Bluetooth can be convenient for a single app, while ANT+ may suit a computer or receiver that already uses that standard. If the trainer, app and watch all compete for the sensor, test whether one device must be disconnected or whether a bridge is required; the monitor’s dual-protocol specification alone does not resolve that architecture.
Training without a watch or phone
Internal recording is the deciding feature. Verity Sense is explicitly described as having internal memory for recording a workout for later review. The supplied information does not make that claim for H10 or HRM-Pro Plus, so choose Verity Sense if standalone capture is a non-negotiable requirement.
Battery, charging and strap care
Polar H10
Polar rates the replaceable coin cell for up to 400 hours. Treat that as a ceiling under the manufacturer’s conditions, not a calendar guarantee. Detach and wash the textile strap according to Polar’s care instructions, and let it dry before storage. Keeping the sensor attached to a damp strap can shorten strap life and encourage skin irritation.
Garmin HRM-Pro Plus
Garmin’s up-to-one-year figure is a claimed maximum. The tool-free battery door simplifies replacement, but keep a compatible coin cell available if the monitor is used for frequent training or travel.
Polar Verity Sense
Polar lists 20 hours of operation. Charge it before long events and after recording sessions, especially if you rely on internal memory. Wipe the optical contact area and band regularly so sweat, sunscreen and dust do not interfere with placement.

The receiving device cannot find the monitor
- Wake the sensor by wearing it or pressing its control, depending on the model.
- Move away from other paired heart-rate transmitters and remove stale entries from the receiving device’s sensor list.
- Confirm that you selected the correct protocol: ANT+ devices will not discover a Bluetooth-only pairing path and vice versa.
- Check the battery or charge level and repeat the search from the workout app’s sensor menu.
The reading drops out during a run
- For a chest strap, moisten the electrodes and tighten the band so it remains in contact while breathing deeply.
- For Verity Sense, move the armband to the recommended upper-arm position and tighten it enough to stop movement.
- Remove layers between the sensor and skin, and clean sweat or residue from the contact surfaces.
- If the dropout occurs only when two devices are connected, test each connection separately and then review the devices’ simultaneous-connection limits.
The heart rate looks implausible at the start
Cold skin, a dry chest strap or a loose optical band can delay a stable signal. Warm up briefly, establish contact and verify the value against your perceived effort before starting a hard interval. A screenless monitor reports what its sensor detects; it does not independently validate the receiving device’s display or zone calculations.

Buying checklist
- Choose sensing method: electrical chest strap for direct interval feedback, optical arm/temple sensor for chest-strap comfort.
- Match protocols: verify ANT+ and/or Bluetooth support on every watch, computer, phone and trainer you will use.
- Decide on standalone recording: Verity Sense has internal memory; the supplied information does not establish that feature for the two chest straps.
- Plan battery upkeep: compare a replaceable coin cell rated up to 400 hours, a claimed up-to-one-year coin-cell interval, or 20 hours of rechargeable operation.
- Check ecosystem features: Garmin HRM-Pro Plus is the specialized choice when Garmin running dynamics matter.
- Test fit before an event: comfort, skin contact and stability determine whether the data remains usable over the whole workout.
- Set expectations: no independent accuracy percentage or laboratory ranking is established here, so avoid choosing on an unsupported “most accurate” promise.
Which one should you buy?
Buy Polar H10 if you want the strongest general-purpose option for running and cycling, especially for intervals, bike computers and mixed ANT+/Bluetooth equipment. Buy Garmin HRM-Pro Plus if Garmin running-dynamics metrics are central to your training and you want them transmitted with heart rate. Buy Polar Verity Sense if a chest strap is the barrier to consistent use or you need a sensor that can record a workout internally without a watch or phone.
These recommendations follow the documented sensing, connectivity, recording and ecosystem differences—not an independently verified accuracy hierarchy. Pair the monitor with the device you actually use, secure the fit, and test the complete setup before depending on it for a race or structured session.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do screenless heart-rate monitors work without a watch?
They can measure heart rate without a watch, but you need either another receiving device or a model with internal memory. Polar Verity Sense is described as recording workouts internally; the supplied information does not establish standalone recording for Polar H10 or Garmin HRM-Pro Plus.
Is ANT+ better than Bluetooth for cycling?
Neither is universally better. ANT+ is common on cycling computers and equipment, while Bluetooth is common on phones, watches and apps. Use the protocol your receiving device supports and check simultaneous-connection limits for your exact setup.
Can I wear an optical armband instead of a chest strap for intervals?
Yes, but placement and stability become especially important during rapid arm movement. Verity Sense is the documented armband option here; choose it when comfort is more important than using a chest strap’s conventional electrical sensing.
How often will I replace or charge the battery?
Polar rates H10 for up to 400 hours with a replaceable coin cell, Garmin claims up to one year for HRM-Pro Plus, and Polar lists 20 hours of operation for Verity Sense. The first two are manufacturer claims and actual intervals depend on use.
