For most gaming PCs, start with 1920×1080 at 60 fps, a hardware encoder, a quality-based recording mode, a 2-second keyframe interval, and MKV as the recording container. In OBS Studio, begin near the middle of its documented 16–23 quality range: NVENC uses Constant QP, AMD uses CQP, Intel Quick Sync uses ICQ, and x264 uses CRF. Lower quality numbers produce cleaner motion and larger files. If the game saturates the GPU or recording becomes uneven, cap the game’s frame rate, reduce GPU-heavy settings, simplify the OBS scene, or drop to 30 fps.

| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Base (Canvas) Resolution | 1920×1080 | Matches a common 1080p game and editing workflow. |
| Output (Scaled) Resolution | 1920×1080 | Avoids an unnecessary scaling step when the source is already 1080p. |
| Common FPS Value | 60 | Captures fast camera pans and gameplay motion more fluidly than 30 fps. |
| Encoder | Hardware encoder when available | Moves video compression away from the CPU and generally leaves more CPU time for the game. |
| Rate control | NVENC Constant QP, AMD CQP, Intel ICQ, or x264 CRF | Quality-based recording adapts to scene complexity instead of forcing a livestream bitrate. |
| Quality value | Start around the middle of 16–23 | Lower values mean higher quality and larger files. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | Provides regular seek points for editing and playback. |
| Recording format | MKV | Protects the recording better if OBS or the system stops unexpectedly; remux it to MP4 afterward when required. |
Use 60 fps only if the game and OBS remain stable. A flawless 30-fps recording is better than a 60-fps file with duplicated frames, render lag, or dropped frames.
How to configure OBS Studio step by step
1. Set the video canvas and output
- Open
Settingsin OBS Studio and chooseVideo. - Set
Base (Canvas) Resolutionto the game’s capture resolution, normally1920x1080for a 1080p clip. - Set
Output (Scaled) Resolutionto1920x1080for the baseline profile. If your system cannot sustain this, use one of the fallback profiles below. - Set
Common FPS Valueto60. Test a representative, action-heavy section of the game rather than an empty menu.
Base and output resolutions do different jobs. The base canvas determines how sources are arranged; output resolution determines the encoded picture. Scaling down can reduce GPU work and storage, but scaling up a low-resolution source does not create extra detail.

Recording FormattoMatroska Video (.mkv). - Choose the hardware encoder for your graphics platform when it is available and supported by your OBS installation.
- Set the rate-control and quality options described in the encoder sections below.
- Set
Keyframe Intervalto2seconds.
Do not select a streaming-style constant bitrate simply because a tutorial lists one. Local recording can spend more bits on complex scenes and fewer on simple ones, so quality-based controls are normally more efficient for clips.
3. Remux only after the recording is safe
When an editor or player requires MP4, use OBS’s File > Remux Recordings command after stopping the recording. Remuxing changes the container without re-encoding the video, so it is normally fast and does not reduce image quality. Keep the original MKV until the MP4 opens correctly in the target application.
Encoder choices: NVENC, AMD, Quick Sync, or x264
The encoder affects CPU/GPU load, supported codecs, quality at a given file size, and which editors can open the result. Select the option your system can run reliably; a theoretical quality advantage is not useful if it causes capture or rendering lag.

| NVIDIA NVENC | Constant QP; start around 16–23; keyframe interval 2 | Supported GeForce systems, especially when you want to keep CPU load low | GPU headroom still matters because OBS must render and composite scenes. |
| AMD hardware encoder | CQP 16–23, Quality preset, High profile, zero B-frames, keyframe interval 2 |
AMD systems where the hardware encoder is exposed in OBS | Test motion-heavy scenes and inspect for blockiness before lowering the quality value. |
| Intel Quick Sync | ICQ 16–23, Target Usage TU4, High profile, normal latency, three B-frames, keyframe interval 2 |
Intel systems with a usable integrated or discrete Quick Sync engine | Availability depends on the processor, graphics driver, and OBS build. |
| x264 | CRF 16–23, veryfast preset, High profile, keyframe interval 2 |
Systems without a suitable hardware encoder or workflows that specifically require CPU encoding | CPU usage can become the bottleneck and compete directly with the game. |
NVIDIA NVENC and codec selection
Supported NVIDIA systems can expose NVENC H.264, HEVC, and AV1 for local recording. H.264 is the safest compatibility choice because the widest range of players and editors can decode it. HEVC and AV1 can provide better compression when the recording hardware, operating system, player, and editing application all support them. NVIDIA’s guidance ranks AV1 ahead of HEVC and H.264 for quality among its listed recording codecs, but compatibility should decide the choice when a file must move between several applications.

For a clip that will be edited on an unknown machine, choose NVENC H.264 in MKV, then remux to MP4 if necessary. For a controlled, modern workflow in which every application supports the codec, test HEVC or AV1 on a short sample before committing to a long session.
AMD hardware encoding
OBS documents AMD recording with CQP in the 16–23 range, the Quality preset, High profile, zero B-frames, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Start near the center of the range. If fine text or foliage breaks up during rapid movement, use a lower CQP value; if files are unnecessarily large and the image remains clean, move upward one step at a time.
Intel Quick Sync
OBS’s documented Quick Sync profile uses ICQ 16–23, Target Usage TU4, the High profile, normal latency, three B-frames, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Quick Sync can be useful when the main GPU is busy with the game, but the exact options shown depend on the Intel graphics hardware and installed driver.

x264 uses CRF rather than CQP or ICQ. OBS documents CRF 16–23, the veryfast preset, the High profile, and a 2-second keyframe interval. The veryfast preset is a practical starting point because slower presets demand more CPU time. Watch OBS’s CPU usage and the game’s frame-time graph while recording; if either becomes unstable, use a hardware encoder or reduce the output workload.

How to choose a quality value
OBS documents a 16–23 range for its quality controls. The number is not a universal bitrate: it is a target for visual quality, and the resulting bitrate changes with resolution, frame rate, motion, texture detail, and codec.
- Lower number: higher image quality, fewer compression artifacts, and larger files.
- Higher number: smaller files and lower write demand, with more risk of visible blockiness in smoke, foliage, shadows, or rapid camera movement.
- Practical method: record 30–60 seconds containing the fastest movement you expect, inspect it at full size, and adjust one step at a time.
Start near the middle of the range rather than copying a value from a different resolution or codec. A clip that looks clean in a static scene may fail during explosions, racing turns, or a fast multiplayer camera sweep.
Why streaming bitrate numbers do not set recording quality
Streaming and local recording solve different problems. A stream must fit a service’s delivery limit, while a local file can vary its bitrate with scene complexity. OBS’s quality modes are content-adaptive, which is why CQP, ICQ, CRF, and Constant QP are preferred starting points for local masters.

Container, codec, and editing compatibility
Why MKV is the safer master
Record to MKV for the local master. If OBS, the game, or the operating system stops unexpectedly, an MKV recording is less likely to lose the entire session than a file that must be finalized as MP4. After stopping normally, remux the file to MP4 from OBS when an editor requires it.
H.264, HEVC, and AV1 decision table
| Codec | Compatibility | Compression potential | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | Broadest among the listed choices | Reference level for this comparison | The file must open in the widest range of editors, players, or devices. |
| HEVC | More dependent on application and hardware support | Better than H.264 when supported | Your editing and playback stack explicitly supports HEVC. |
| AV1 | Most dependent on modern hardware and software | Best quality among NVIDIA’s listed recording codecs when supported | You control the entire workflow and have confirmed AV1 import and playback. |
Always make a short test recording and open it in the exact editor, player, and upload workflow you plan to use. Codec support can vary by application version even on the same computer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keeping 60 fps smooth: diagnose the real bottleneck
OBS must render and composite scenes before it encodes them. If the game uses nearly all available GPU time, OBS may not get enough time to draw the capture and interface, even when the encoder itself is hardware-based.
Check the symptoms
- Skipped frames due to encoding lag: the selected encoder cannot keep up with the requested quality, resolution, or frame rate.
- Missed frames due to rendering lag: OBS lacks GPU time to composite the scene.
- Game stutter with a clean recording: the game and OBS are competing for CPU, GPU, memory, or storage resources.
- Clean preview but a damaged file: inspect the recorded file itself; the preview is not a substitute for playback testing.
Reduce GPU contention first
- Cap the game’s frame rate below the maximum your GPU can produce. This reserves rendering time for OBS.
- Enable V-Sync if it improves frame pacing on your display and game.
- Lower GPU-heavy game settings such as shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, or render scale.
- Use borderless windowed mode when it improves capture reliability on your system.
- Simplify OBS scenes: remove unnecessary browser sources, animated overlays, filters, and high-resolution media.
- Try running OBS as administrator, which NVIDIA lists as a mitigation for GPU-priority problems.
NVIDIA’s practical warning is that GPU utilization above 95% can cause Windows to prioritize the game over other work and make a stream lag. The same headroom principle applies to recording: do not tune the game to consume every available GPU cycle.
Best Value
Drop frame rate before destroying image quality
If 60 fps still does not work after reducing contention, set OBS to 30 fps. OBS explicitly recommends dropping from 60 to 30 when 60 fps is not working. A stable 30-fps file is easier to edit and watch than a nominal 60-fps file with uneven frame delivery.
Laptop and multi-GPU capture checks
Modern laptops often contain an integrated GPU for desktop work and a discrete GPU for 3D games. OBS notes that Game Capture and Window Capture should be configured as high-performance applications on the GPU running the game. If OBS and the game use different GPUs, capture may fail, show a black window, or perform poorly.
- Confirm which GPU the game is using in the operating system’s graphics settings or the vendor control panel.
- Assign OBS to the high-performance GPU when using Game Capture or Window Capture for a game rendered on the discrete GPU.
- Restart OBS after changing the assignment, then test a short recording.
- If capture remains unreliable, try a different capture source or borderless windowed mode rather than immediately increasing encoder quality.
Fallback profiles for constrained systems
| Profile | Resolution and frame rate | When to use it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default | 1920×1080 at 60 fps | The game, encoder, and disk remain stable during heavy motion. | Highest workload among the common profiles in this guide. |
| 1080p30 | 1920×1080 at 30 fps | The game is sharp but 60-fps capture causes lag or dropped frames. | Half the temporal samples of 60 fps; fast motion looks less fluid. |
| 720p30 | 1280×720 at 30 fps | The system, storage device, or editing pipeline cannot sustain 1080p. | Lower detail and less room for cropping or reframing. |
| 1440p or 4K | Only when each component is validated | The game, encoder, disk throughput, and editor all support the higher workload. | Higher rendering, encoding, storage, and editing demands; not a default upgrade. |
Use the least demanding profile that preserves the result you actually need. Resolution, frame rate, quality value, codec, and overlays all add to the workload; changing several at once makes it difficult to identify the cause of a problem.
Storage planning and file-size trade-offs
Quality-based recording produces variable file sizes. Fast motion, particles, foliage, and detailed textures require more data than a static menu. Lowering the quality number also increases file size. Keep adequate free space on the recording drive and avoid placing the recording path on a drive that is already busy loading the game or copying other large files.
- Record a short sample at the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and quality value.
- Check the sample’s file size and multiply it by the planned recording duration to estimate capacity.
- Leave additional headroom for multiple takes, remuxed copies, project files, and exports.
- If the drive cannot sustain the workload, reduce resolution or frame rate before accepting corrupted or uneven footage.
A capture card, second SSD, GPU upgrade, or microphone is not required for this settings profile. Those additions become relevant only when the workflow involves a console or second PC, the storage device is the bottleneck, the available encoder cannot keep up, or the audio goal requires separate hardware.
Quick Recap
A repeatable test procedure
- Load a demanding section of the game with the same graphics settings you will use during real play.
- Start a 30–60 second OBS recording with the baseline profile.
- Perform rapid camera movement and any action that creates particles, crowds, foliage, or large lighting changes.
- Stop recording and inspect OBS statistics for rendering, encoding, and dropped-frame warnings.
- Play the file in the intended player and open it in the intended editor.
- If the file is smooth but too large, raise the quality number one step. If it is blocky, lower the number one step.
- If frames are missed, cap the game, reduce GPU-heavy settings, simplify the scene, or move to the 30-fps fallback before changing multiple encoder controls.
Pre-recording checklist
- Game and OBS use compatible GPU assignments on a laptop.
- Base and output resolutions are intentional rather than accidentally scaled.
- 60 fps is stable in a demanding test, or the profile has been set to 30 fps.
- A hardware encoder is selected when suitable; x264 is set to
veryfastif CPU encoding is necessary. - Quality control starts within the documented 16–23 range.
- Keyframe interval is 2 seconds.
- Recording format is MKV.
- The selected codec opens in the target editor and player.
- The recording drive has capacity and sustained write headroom.
- The game is not consuming more than about 95% of GPU utilization during capture.
