Best Scrapers and Grease-Absorbing Tools for Cleaning Pans

Quick answer: Use a purpose-built plastic, paper-composite, or silicone pan scraper for stuck food; a handled nylon brush or zero-scratch scrubber for everyday grease; and an absorbent paper towel or washable grease cloth to remove free oil before washing. Match the tool to the surface: non-stick and coated cookware need non-abrasive materials, while stainless steel and cast iron tolerate more friction but still benefit from a blunt edge. Oil-absorbing sheets made for simmering liquids are a separate product and must not be used as frying liners, pan-bottom protectors, oven sheets, or pressure-cooker accessories.

Choose the tool by the mess, not by the advertising label

A scraper, scrubber, brush, towel, and oil-absorbing sheet solve different problems. Selecting the wrong format can turn a short cleanup into a damaged coating, clogged drain, or unsafe piece of material in a hot pan.

Mess or task Best first tool Why it fits Important limitation
Loose grease before washing Paper towel, bagasse towel, or reusable grease cloth Removes free oil before detergent and keeps concentrated grease out of the wash water Put the used absorbent in the garbage; do not rinse a load of oil down the drain
Soft food stuck to a pan floor Plastic, paper-composite, or silicone scraper A broad, blunt edge lifts residue with less gouging risk than metal Do not force a cold, baked-on layer; soak or deglaze first
Daily grease and residue Handled nylon brush or zero-scratch scrubber Provides pressure and reach across the pan floor while distributing detergent Check the maker’s surface restrictions, especially for stainless-steel appliances
Corners, rivets, and narrow edges Small scraper edge or compact brush Concentrates control where a broad pad cannot reach A sharp or worn edge can scratch; replace damaged tools
Baked-on carbon Soak, then a compatible scrubber; reserve stronger chemistry for appropriate surfaces Time and softened residue reduce the force needed America’s Test Kitchen recommends oven cleaner only for pan exteriors in extreme cases
Oil floating on soup or a simmering dish Purpose-made oil-absorbing cooking sheet Designed to capture surface oil while broth and ingredients remain Not for frying, oven use, pan bottoms, pressure cookers, or reuse

The safest general-purpose setup is therefore a blunt scraper, a soft or nylon scrubber, and something absorbent for excess oil. No single item performs all three jobs well.

Check the cookware surface before you scrub

Non-stick and ceramic-style coatings

Coated pans need the least aggressive contact. Use a plastic, silicone, or paper-composite scraper and a nylon brush, soft sponge, or zero-scratch pad. Avoid metal spatula-like scraping edges, steel wool, abrasive powders, and harsh scourers unless the cookware maker explicitly allows them. A damaged coating can lose its release properties and may expose the underlying metal.

The OXO Dish Brush with Scraper is described by its manufacturer as using stiff nylon bristles that scrub pots, pans, and dishes without scratching; its built-in scraper is intended for stubborn spots, including on non-stick cookware. It is dishwasher safe. The Scotch-Brite Zero Scratch Dishwand and Zero Scratch Foam Scrubber are also positioned for grease on most surfaces, including non-stick pots and pans. The dishwand dispenses soap, but 3M says not to use it on stainless-steel appliances.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel generally tolerates more vigorous cleaning than a coated pan, but a blunt scraper and nylon brush still remove food with fewer visible marks. Follow the finish direction when wiping, and avoid treating a stainless-steel appliance exterior like the inside of a pot. The zero-scratch dishwand’s manufacturer restriction applies specifically to stainless-steel appliances.

For stainless cookware, SCANPAN’s care guide advises hot soapy water with a nylon brush, cloth, or sponge and says never to use a metal or other harsh scourer. The complete care document is available at SCANPAN’s stainless-steel user guide.

Cast iron

Cast iron can handle a firm nylon brush and a non-metal scraper, but water exposure and storage matter as much as the scraping step. Do not leave a cast-iron pan submerged for hours. After washing, dry it completely and follow the seasoning routine recommended for your particular pan. If a coating, enamel, or manufacturer instruction is present, that instruction overrides generic cast-iron practice.

Coated bakeware

Non-stick bakeware and other coated dishes should be treated like non-stick frying pans: soften residue, use a non-abrasive scraper, and avoid metal edges. A small scraper is useful around corners, but do not twist it sideways against a thin coating.

Scrapers: material and edge shape matter

Paper-composite flat scrapers

The Epicurean Pan Scraper is listed as a 2.4 × 2.4-inch scraper made from 3/16-inch paper composite. The manufacturer describes it as dishwasher safe, heat resistant, dual sided, stain resistant, naturally antimicrobial, microplastics free, made in the USA, and covered by a lifetime warranty. Its listed price was $7.99, with a 4.9 rating from 56 reviews at the time captured. The compact square gives you a small edge for corners and a wider face for a pan floor.

A paper-composite scraper is a useful middle ground: firmer than silicone but less likely than metal to gouge a coating. Use the thin edge nearly flat to the surface rather than stabbing at a spot. Heat resistance does not mean it should be left in a hot pan; remove the pan from active heat and handle it safely first.

Silicone scrapers

MUJI’s Silicone Scraper is described as heat resistant, easy to clean, and helpful for reducing water use while reaching residue at the bottom of pots and pans. The page showed a 4.4/5 rating from 10 reviews at capture time. Silicone flexes around curved bottoms and corners, making it effective for soft films of sauce and grease that a rigid edge can skip over.

Flexibility is also the trade-off. Silicone may not lift a thick, hardened carbon island quickly. Let hot water and detergent soften the deposit, or deglaze a suitable pan while it is still warm, then use the scraper with controlled pressure.

Plastic edges

Plastic pan scrapers are inexpensive and usually safe for coatings when the edge is smooth and blunt. Inspect the working edge: a nick can become a sharp point that scratches a delicate finish. Replace a scraper that has warped, cracked, or developed burrs.

Why metal is rarely the default

Metal edges can remove stubborn carbon, but they create the highest risk of gouging non-stick surfaces and coated bakeware. Metal is a specialist choice only when the cookware maker allows it and the surface is suitable. For an unknown pan, start with a non-metal scraper and a soak.

Brushes and zero-scratch scrubbers for grease

Handled nylon brushes

A handled brush adds leverage without requiring your fingers to press directly into greasy water. Nylon bristles reach around rivets, under rolled rims, and across a textured pan surface. The OXO Dish Brush with Scraper combines stiff nylon bristles with a built-in scraper and is dishwasher safe according to OXO. Use the bristles for the broad cleanup and reserve the scraper for isolated spots.

Brushes are particularly useful after you have removed free oil with a towel. Detergent can then emulsify the thin film that remains instead of having to disperse a large pool of grease.

Zero-scratch dishwands

The Scotch-Brite Zero Scratch Dishwand combines a soap reservoir with a non-scratch cleaning head. 3M says it works on most surfaces, including non-stick pots and pans, but not on stainless-steel appliances. The integrated handle keeps a wet hand farther from hot or greasy water and makes steady, even strokes easier.

Foam and palm-sized scrubbers

The Scotch-Brite Zero Scratch Foam Scrubber is a palm-sized option positioned for grease on cookware and glassware, including non-stick pots and pans. A compact pad gives broad contact over a pan floor, while a scraper remains better for a single stuck patch or a narrow corner. Rinse the pad thoroughly and replace it when it begins to shed, harden, or retain an odor.

Remove free grease before adding water

Washing a pan full of liquid oil transfers the problem to the sink and wastewater system. Municipal guidance from Avalon recommends dry-wiping manageable grease with a rubber scraper, paper towels, or another disposable, non-washable absorbent material, then putting that absorbed grease in the garbage rather than sending free oil down the drain.

Paper and bagasse towels

MUJI lists its Paper Towel as a 60-sheet, two-ply bagasse towel for wiping oil from frying pans and absorbing moisture. Fold the towel into a thick pad, wipe the warm-but-safe pan, and discard it with the absorbed grease. Do not wipe a pan that is hot enough to scorch the paper or burn your hand.

Tear-resistant kitchen sheets

MUJI’s Tear-Resistant Kitchen Sheet is described as absorbing excess oil from meats and fried foods. The maker warns not to flush it because it does not dissolve in water. That warning applies even when the sheet appears clean: dispose of it in household garbage, not the toilet or sink.

Reusable grease cloths

HANDECLOTH Original Reusable Grease Absorber is described as a washable birdseye-weave cloth for bacon and fried-food grease. The maker says absorbency increases with washing. A reusable cloth reduces single-use waste, but it concentrates food oil in the textile. Keep it separate from ordinary laundry until the oil has been removed according to the cloth maker’s care instructions, and do not wring a saturated cloth over a drain.

Oil-absorbing sheets for soup are not pan liners

Cooking sheets designed to skim oil from liquid food work by floating on a simmering surface. Topvalu’s oil-absorbing sheet instructions say to place it on simmering food to absorb scum and excess oil, then remove it with chopsticks. The same safety instructions prohibit pressure cookers, frying, oven use, pan-bottom use, and reuse; they also say to stop the heat before placing or removing the sheet.

Disposable grease-absorbing pads sold for this purpose use microporous sheets that capture floating grease from hot liquids while allowing broth and ingredients to remain, according to a Walmart listing. Their function is skimming, not scrubbing. Never press one onto a dry pan, use one as a cooking liner, or leave one in direct contact with a heating element.

Safe handling sequence

  1. Turn off the heat and move the pot to a stable, heat-safe surface.
  2. Lay the sheet on the liquid only as its package directs; do not force it under the surface.
  3. Allow it to collect surface oil for the stated use, then lift it with chopsticks or another utensil.
  4. Discard it as single-use waste. Do not wash it for reuse or flush it.

A complete cleanup routine

  1. Make the pan safe. Turn off the burner. Let cookware cool until it can be handled safely, unless you are intentionally deglazing a compatible pan while warm. Never add cold water to a dangerously hot pan.
  2. Remove loose food. Use a silicone, plastic, or paper-composite scraper at a shallow angle. Push residue toward the waste bin rather than into the sink.
  3. Dry-wipe free oil. Use a folded paper towel, bagasse towel, or reusable grease cloth while the grease is still manageable. Put disposable absorbent waste in the garbage.
  4. Soak ordinary residue. America’s Test Kitchen recommends an overnight soak in sudsy water for everyday messes. This gives detergent time to soften the film before scrubbing.
  5. Scrub with a compatible tool. Use a nylon brush, soft sponge, or zero-scratch pad. Work from the cleanest area toward the heaviest residue so you do not spread grease.
  6. Target remaining spots. Apply the scraper only to softened deposits. Keep the edge flat and use several light passes instead of one forceful jab.
  7. Rinse and inspect. Check the bottom, rim, rivets, and handle junction. Repeat a short soak if a greasy sheen remains rather than escalating immediately to a harsher abrasive.
  8. Dry completely. Dry coated and stainless cookware to prevent water marks; dry cast iron immediately and maintain it according to its care instructions.

What to do with baked-on carbon

Baked-on carbon is different from a greasy film. A scraper may remove raised flakes, but aggressive scraping can damage a coating beneath them. Start with detergent and time. For everyday messes, the overnight sudsy soak recommended by America’s Test Kitchen is the low-risk first step. Use a compatible scrubber after soaking.

America’s Test Kitchen reports testing a dozen cleansers on different cookware materials and limits oven cleaner to pan exteriors in extreme cases. Do not put oven cleaner inside a pan unless the cookware manufacturer explicitly says it is safe. Ventilate the area, protect skin and eyes, and follow the cleaner’s label if an exterior treatment is necessary.

Common mistakes and fixes

  • Pouring oil down the drain: Wipe or absorb it first and place the absorbent in garbage.
  • Using a metal edge on non-stick: Switch to silicone, plastic, paper composite, nylon, or a zero-scratch pad.
  • Scrubbing a dry carbon layer aggressively: Soak or deglaze a suitable pan before applying controlled pressure.
  • Using an oil-skimming sheet as a liner: These sheets are for floating on simmering liquids only; follow the prohibitions on frying, ovens, pan bottoms, pressure cookers, and reuse.
  • Flushing tear-resistant sheets or grease cloths: They do not belong in plumbing. Dispose of single-use sheets in garbage and handle reusable cloths as oily laundry.
  • Ignoring a product’s surface exclusion: The zero-scratch dishwand, for example, is not intended for stainless-steel appliances according to 3M.
  • Leaving a cast-iron pan wet: Dry it promptly and follow the pan’s seasoning guidance.

Buying checklist

  • Choose a blunt, smooth edge for non-stick or coated cookware.
  • Look for a compact tip if your pans have tight corners, rivets, or rolled rims.
  • Choose a handled nylon brush when reach and leverage matter more than a scraping edge.
  • Prefer dishwasher-safe tools when the manufacturer explicitly lists that care method.
  • Keep a disposable or reusable absorbent product for pre-wash oil removal.
  • For soup-skimming sheets, verify the package’s heat, placement, disposal, and single-use rules.
  • Replace any scraper or pad with cracks, burrs, hardened foam, or embedded grit.

A practical three-piece kit

For most kitchens, start with one non-metal flat scraper, one handled nylon or zero-scratch scrubber, and one oil-absorbent option. The scraper handles stuck food; the brush or pad handles the thin greasy film; the towel or cloth prevents a pool of free oil from reaching the sink. Add a purpose-made simmering-liquid sheet only if you regularly skim soup or braises, and store it separately so it is not mistaken for a pan liner.

This division of labor protects coatings, reduces scrubbing force, and keeps concentrated grease out of plumbing without relying on an aggressive tool.
