The best INSPIRE-MANAK entry is not the most decorative model or the easiest classroom experiment. It is an original, science-and-technology-based solution to a specific problem faced by identifiable people, with a mechanism the student can explain, measure and improve. A strong entry shows why the existing workaround is inadequate, what the new design changes and whether another user could safely adopt it.
INSPIRE-MANAK is implemented by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) with the National Innovation Foundation (NIF). Schools currently nominate five best original ideas, with no more than two ideas from Classes 11–12 science stream. The programme moves selected ideas through district and state exhibitions to a national exhibition; confirm the current portal notice and financial-year rules before submitting.

What INSPIRE-MANAK selects
INSPIRE-MANAK is an innovation competition, not a basic science-project competition. Official guidance describes it as a “Science and Technology-based Innovation competition, NOT a Science Project competition.” That distinction should determine every decision: a model demonstrating a textbook principle is weaker than a student-originated device or process that solves a documented local problem.
The programme is designed to encourage original ideas from school students. Schools nominate their five best ideas, subject to the current rules on class and stream representation. Selected ideas can progress through district and state exhibitions to a national exhibition. The current programme description says the top 1,000 ideas are shown at the National Level Exhibition and the top 60 are shortlisted for national awards and future direction. The scheme overview has a target of one million original ideas. These programme figures can change, so use the applicable portal notice for the year of nomination.

The selection dimensions
Official selection dimensions include novelty, social applicability, environmental friendliness or implications, user-friendliness and comparative advantage over existing technologies. The FAQ also points to potential impact, scope for diffusion through commercial or non-commercial channels and relevance to government schemes.
| Question a student should answer | What convincing evidence looks like |
|---|---|
| Who is the user and what is the pain point? | A named setting and user group, such as farm workers using backpack sprayers on a particular crop, rather than “farmers need help.” |
| What is genuinely new? | A clearly described mechanism, arrangement or process that is not merely copied from a common online build. |
| What benefit can be measured? | Results under the same conditions for the old and new methods: effort, time, output, water, waste, safety incidents, reliability or operating cost. |
| Will it fit the real environment? | Safe operation, affordable materials, repairability, appropriate size and usability by the intended person. |
| Could it spread? | A plausible route for another household, school, farmer or local body to make, maintain and adopt it. |
How to choose a project idea
Begin with observation rather than a list of fashionable technologies. Spend time where the problem occurs, ask the person who performs the task and record what happens now. A good idea normally has a narrow setting, a repeated failure and a design change that can be tested with a prototype.
1. Name one user, place and recurring problem
Write a sentence in this form: “In [specific setting], [specific user] struggles with [specific task or failure] because [observed cause].” For example, “Workers spraying a particular vegetable plot carry a heavy backpack sprayer for long rows, causing repeated lifting and pressure problems.” This is more useful than a title such as “Agriculture Innovation.”
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →2. Describe the existing workaround
Document what people already do, including tools, number of steps, force, waiting time, maintenance and failure points. Take measurements or photographs when appropriate and obtain permission before recording people. A new project has comparative value only when the comparison is real.
3. Sketch alternatives before building
Draw two or three possible mechanisms. Identify which part of each design is conventional and which part is your own contribution. Reject an idea that simply reproduces a circuit, sensor arrangement or mechanical model found in a tutorial. Check prior art through the official repeated-ideas guidance and ordinary observation before investing in materials.

4. Build a safe, low-cost prototype
Use materials that can be replaced locally and design for repair. Keep a version log: date, change made, reason, test condition and result. A rough prototype that exposes a failure is more valuable than a polished model that has never been tested.
5. Test and iterate
Compare the prototype with the existing method under the same conditions. Record raw observations, not just a claimed percentage improvement. If the first design fails, explain the failure and the change that followed; iteration is part of the innovation story.

The following are starting directions, not ready-made recipes. Each must be grounded in a student’s own observation and checked for prior art. The winning contribution is the specific mechanism and evidence, not the category name.
Farm-work strain reducer
Choose one task—lifting a container, pumping, carrying produce or spraying a crop—and measure where force and fatigue occur. A locally repairable tool might redistribute weight, use a wheel or lever, shorten repeated motion or make pressure easier to maintain. An official winner, the “Multipurpose Agriculture Wheel Sprayer and Water Sprinkling System,” addressed strain and pressure problems associated with backpack sprayers. That example shows the value of a defined user and task; it does not make every wheel sprayer original.
- Measure load, distance, repetitions, time and maintenance needs for the current method.
- Design the change around the observed strain rather than adding unrelated electronics.
- Test output uniformity and operator effort, not only whether the device moves.
- Check stability, chemical handling safety and repair access before demonstration.
Non-electric access device
Where electricity is unreliable, investigate a mechanical way to move water or supplies. Compare lifting effort, output per minute, reliability and maintenance with the existing method. An official winner, “Mechanical Swing Pump,” was intended to lift groundwater without electricity or conventional manual pumping. A new entry still needs its own context, mechanism and measurements; naming a familiar pump is not enough.

Drainage maintenance mechanism
Observe one drain, culvert or school wastewater channel through several blockage events. Record whether the obstruction is leaves, plastic, sediment, grease or another material; note where access is difficult and how workers currently clear it. A removable collection basket, inspection point or cleaning mechanism could be promising if it addresses that exact failure.
Recommended Free Tools
A generic “smart drainage” model is weak because it does not establish a local blockage pattern or a new intervention. Test removal time, captured material, overflow prevention, cleaning safety and whether the mechanism itself becomes a blockage.
Assistive everyday device
Co-design with an elderly person, a person with a disability or a worker who has a specific grip, reach, mobility or visibility problem. Ask the user to demonstrate the task and describe what independence means to them. Possible contributions include a better grip, an alignment aid, a reach mechanism or a way to expose information without requiring fine motor control.
- Get informed consent and protect the person’s privacy.
- Measure task completion, effort, errors and whether assistance from another person is still needed.
- Test comfort, adjustability, cleaning and failure-safe behavior.
- Do not present a device as universally suitable after testing with one person; state the tested user and limits.
Waste-handling improvement
Target one waste stream and one point of failure: contamination during sorting, awkward collection, unsafe temporary storage or a difficult handover to a recycler. “Turning waste into energy” is too broad unless the student has a novel, testable process with evidence of safety and output. A focused intervention can be stronger, such as a container that prevents one observed type of contamination or reduces lifting during collection.
Water-use reliability
Look for a narrow, observed failure such as overflow in a particular tank, leakage that is hard to locate or maintenance access that requires unsafe climbing. Ordinary rainwater harvesting, filtration, water-level indicators and sensor irrigation are listed in official repeated-ideas guidance; they need a genuinely new and documented contribution to be credible.

Define the failure before choosing a sensor or mechanism. Test false alarms, missed events, power or battery dependence, calibration, cleaning and what happens when the device fails. A manual backup can be an important part of a practical design.
School or public-space safety
Address one observed hazard with a passive or active design whose operation and benefit can be tested. Generic burglar, gas, fire and women-safety alarms are identified as frequent submissions. A distinct context and mechanism are essential—for example, a specific school access hazard, an obstruction that causes falls or a warning system designed around the timing and visibility of one location.
Safety projects require extra care: avoid dangerous tests, document who is responsible for responding to an alert and distinguish a prototype warning from a certified life-safety device.
Ideas to avoid or treat as high-risk
The official repeated-ideas document lists categories that commonly appear and therefore require exceptional originality:
| Common category | Why a routine version is weak | What would be needed to make a case |
|---|---|---|
| Rainwater harvesting, ordinary purification or water-level indicators | Basic forms are widely demonstrated and may not address a specific failure. | A documented local problem and a new, testable mechanism with measured improvement. |
| Drip or sensor irrigation, automatic plant watering and hydroponics | Ready-made kits and tutorials make copying easy. | A distinct user need, mechanism and comparison with the actual local practice. |
| Windmills, solar cookers and solar lights | A familiar energy demonstration does not by itself show innovation. | A new application or design improvement that solves a defined access, reliability or maintenance problem. |
| Waste-to-energy, biogas and footstep electricity | Broad claims often lack a safe, repeatable process and useful output evidence. | A narrow feedstock, controlled process, measured output and credible safety plan. |
| Smart street lights, generic home automation and common alarms | Sensor-and-controller combinations are frequently submitted. | A specific observed hazard, different mechanism and evidence that the design works in that setting. |
The teachers’ handbook also warns against projects taken from science books, do-it-yourself books, websites or YouTube; simple demonstrations of the carbon or water cycle, food chains, photosynthesis, the solar system, volcanoes and similar textbook concepts; and common ready-made sensor or RFID builds. A working circuit is not evidence of originality.

How to turn an observation into a nomination
- Write the problem statement. Name the user, setting, task and failure in one short paragraph. Include when and how often it occurs.
- Record the baseline. Note the current method, materials, time, effort, output and safety concerns. Add a dated photograph or measurement where appropriate.
- Explain the novel feature. State in one sentence what the design changes and why that change is different from common solutions.
- Build and document. Make a safe prototype with locally available materials. Label moving parts and keep a dated change log.
- Run a fair comparison. Use the same load, distance, volume, user instructions and number of trials for the existing method and the prototype whenever possible.
- Record failures. Include jams, leaks, false readings, uncomfortable use, breakage and maintenance. Describe the design change made in response.
- State limits and next steps. Say who tested it, under what conditions and what remains unproven. Identify one realistic improvement rather than claiming universal success.
- Use a precise title. Describe the device or action and its setting. “Removable leaf-and-plastic trap for the north school drain” communicates more than “Digital India” or “Agriculture.”
A compact nomination outline
- User and need: who experiences the problem and where.
- Existing practice: what currently happens and its measurable weakness.
- Innovation: the mechanism or process the student created.
- Evidence: baseline and prototype results under stated conditions.
- Practical fit: safety, cost, repair, environmental effect and ease of use.
- Diffusion: how another user or local institution could adopt it.
How to test a prototype credibly
A small, disciplined test is more persuasive than a large unsupported claim. Choose one or two primary measures connected to the problem. For a carrying aid, that might be load-handling time and perceived effort; for a water device, volume delivered, leakage events and maintenance time; for a waste container, contamination rate and collection effort.
| Comparison axis | Useful question |
|---|---|
| Effectiveness | Does the task reach the required output or standard? |
| Effort | Does the user perform fewer, lighter or safer movements? |
| Safety | What hazards exist during normal use, cleaning, repair and failure? |
| Environmental impact | Does it reduce material, water, energy or waste, and what new waste does it create? |
| Repairability | Can a local person identify and replace the failed part? |
| Affordability | What materials and recurring costs are required, and are they realistic for the user? |
| Reliability | Does it work repeatedly, including after cleaning, weather exposure or a low-power condition? |
| Adoption | Can the intended user understand, operate and maintain it without specialist support? |
Keep a test log with date, conditions, trial number, input, result and notes. If you calculate an improvement, show the underlying measurements and state the sample size and conditions. Do not claim a percentage reduction simply because the prototype feels easier.
Exhibitions, funding and what happens after selection
The programme route includes school nomination, district and state exhibitions and a national exhibition. Later exhibition stages include mentoring for prototype development, according to the official programme page. Top ideas may be considered for product or process development and linkage with other DST/NIF schemes.
The FAQ states that the award money includes the cost of making the project or model and taking it to the district exhibition or display competition. The current programme page states an award of ₹10,000 per selected idea. Treat that amount and all programme figures as current-cycle information: confirm the applicable notice before budgeting, purchasing materials or promising a level of support.
Budget for the prototype itself, replacement parts, safe transport, labels, test materials and any protective equipment. A low-cost design is not automatically better, but a design that depends on unavailable parts or specialist servicing will face a serious adoption disadvantage.
What judges should be able to understand quickly
In a short explanation, a judge should be able to identify the user, the observed failure, the mechanism, the comparison and the next improvement. Demonstrate the critical action rather than spending the presentation on decoration. Keep the original sketches, baseline notes, failed versions and test log available; they show that the student—not a tutorial—drove the design.
Use ordinary language for the user’s problem and precise language for the mechanism. Explain why each component exists. If a sensor, motor or software element is used, describe the failure it addresses and what happens when it stops working. A project that remains useful in a power cut, with a broken sensor or during cleaning is often more practical than one that only works in ideal conditions.

Final decision checklist
- Is the problem observed in a real setting rather than invented for a display?
- Can the student identify a specific user and explain the current workaround?
- Is the mechanism or process genuinely different from common online and textbook builds?
- Has the prototype been compared with the existing method under stated conditions?
- Are safety, environmental effects, repair and affordability addressed?
- Does the title describe the device and context precisely?
- Could another person understand how to use and maintain it?
- Are limits and failed tests reported honestly?
- Does the idea have a plausible path to use beyond the exhibition?
If the answer to these questions is yes, the project has the qualities INSPIRE-MANAK is designed to reward: originality tied to a real need, a defensible technical improvement and evidence that the idea could help people outside the classroom.
