For most Samsung Odyssey G5 owners, the best starting point for GTA V is the monitor’s native resolution, its highest reliably supported refresh rate (often 144 Hz or 165 Hz, depending on revision), FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync enabled when stable, high anisotropic filtering, moderate anti-aliasing, and a frame cap just below the refresh ceiling that your PC can sustain. Use a neutral SDR picture preset, or follow Rockstar’s specific HDR setup guidance instead of stacking display enhancements.

There is no universal brightness, contrast, or sharpness number: Odyssey G5 revisions differ, and room lighting, graphics hardware, cable, firmware, and the game version all change the result. Use the procedures below to tune your exact monitor without sacrificing frame pacing.

Start by identifying your exact Odyssey G5

“Odyssey G5” is a product family rather than one specification. Screen size, native resolution, maximum refresh rate, adaptive-sync behavior, inputs, and on-screen-display labels vary by revision. Read the model code from the rear label, monitor menu, Windows display information, or the original documentation before copying settings from another G5 owner.

Do not force a refresh rate or resolution that the monitor, cable, graphics card, or operating system cannot expose reliably. The G5 guides referenced for this setup document model-dependent 144 Hz and 165 Hz operation. Some PC and graphics-card combinations can flicker after a refresh-rate change; if that happens, return to the highest stable value rather than treating the nominal maximum as mandatory.

Samsung 27" Odyssey G5 (G51F) Series QHD (1440P) Gaming Monitor | 180Hz, 1ms, AMD FreeSync, HDR10, Height Adj Stand, Black Equalizer, Virtual Aim Point, Auto Source Switch+ (LS27FG512ENXZA)
  • QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Check the signal path first

  • Connect the PC directly to the monitor rather than through a receiver, dock, splitter, or converter while tuning.
  • Use a cable and input that actually expose the desired native resolution and refresh rate. A cable that works at 60 Hz may not be reliable at the monitor’s maximum mode.
  • Install the current graphics driver through your GPU vendor’s normal update process, then restart the PC.
  • In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select the highest refresh rate that remains stable for the exact G5.

Recommended baseline profile

Apply this profile before changing individual GTA options. It gives you a known baseline for judging clarity, latency, and smoothness.

Area Starting choice Why and what to verify
Desktop and game resolution Exact native resolution of your G5 Native rendering avoids scaling blur. Confirm the monitor model first because G5 revisions do not all share one resolution.
Refresh rate Highest stable mode exposed by the monitor, connection, and GPU; commonly 144 Hz or 165 Hz on documented revisions Use stability over the label on the box. Revert if a mode causes flicker.
Adaptive sync FreeSync/Adaptive Sync on when supported and stable Variable refresh can smooth frame-time changes, but behavior depends on the monitor, GPU, connection, and driver.
Picture preset for SDR Neutral or Graphics A restrained preset gives GTA’s image a better reference point than an aggressive showroom mode.
Brightness Moderate level matched to the room Brightness is an exposure preference, not a universal calibration value. Adjust after the game is displaying correctly.
Artificial processing Disable extra contrast, sharpness, AI, Smart, Dynamic, or Adaptive picture processing Enhancement can exaggerate halos, crush shadow detail, or interfere with HDR troubleshooting.
HDR Off for a clean SDR baseline; enable only after completing the HDR procedure below This isolates tone-mapping issues from ordinary rendering and VRR problems.

Set GTA V’s resolution and graphics options

Open GTA V’s Settings > Graphics menu and keep the game at the same native resolution selected in Windows. Changing only the monitor’s desktop mode while leaving the game at a lower resolution can make the picture look soft; changing only the game mode can trigger scaling or an unsupported signal.

Anisotropic filtering: use it for texture clarity

Set anisotropic filtering high, up to 16x where your build exposes that level. GTA V uses this setting to preserve detail on surfaces viewed at an angle, such as roads, sidewalks, terrain, and building textures receding into the distance. It is usually a more efficient clarity upgrade than pushing every anti-aliasing option to its maximum.

If performance is already near the edge of your GPU’s capacity, reduce other expensive options before abandoning high anisotropic filtering. Compare the road markings and ground textures while moving through the same area rather than judging a static menu.

Anti-aliasing: spend GPU headroom deliberately

GTA V exposes FXAA, MSAA, and TXAA. Anti-aliasing reduces jagged edges, but higher-quality modes consume GPU time and can lower the sustained frame rate that matters for smoothness.

  • FXAA: Use when you need a low-cost reduction in edge shimmer. It can look softer than the alternatives, so reassess image sharpness at native resolution.
  • MSAA: Increase only while your system can maintain the target frame rate. If frame pacing becomes uneven, step it down before lowering the monitor’s native resolution.
  • TXAA: Test it as a temporal anti-aliasing option when available in your build. Temporal processing can reduce crawling edges but may appear softer or show motion artifacts in some scenes.

There is no single best anti-aliasing choice for every G5 or GPU. Use the highest option that leaves enough performance for your frame cap, then inspect distant wires, foliage, vehicle edges, and building silhouettes while moving.

Frame scaling and VSync

Leave frame scaling at the native value for a sharp baseline. A scaled internal resolution can improve performance, but it changes the detail-versus-speed trade-off and should be introduced only after you have confirmed that native rendering is the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GTA V includes VSync. With a variable-refresh display, test the game with VSync according to the behavior of your GPU driver and monitor. The important outcome is a stable frame queue without tearing or an added latency spike. If enabling VSync causes stutter, disable it and use a carefully chosen cap while FreeSync remains active; if disabling it produces visible tearing, test the opposite combination. Keep one change at a time so you can identify which control altered the result.

  • QHD resolution (2560 x 1440) boasts incredibly detailed, pin-sharp images.
  • With a wide 178° viewing angle, the IPS panel consistently delivers crisp, clear hues from various viewpoints.
  • 180Hz Refresh Rate and 1ms response time (GtG) allow fast reactions for ultra-smooth gaming, plus G-Sync compatibility syncs the GPU and panel to reduce choppiness, screen lag, and image tearing.
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth.

Choose a frame cap for consistent pacing

A large uncapped FPS number is not automatically smoother. PCGamingWiki records a default 188 FPS cap for GTA V and reports heavy stutter above approximately 140 FPS. Those figures describe the game behavior documented on that page, not a guarantee for every hardware configuration.

Set a cap close to the highest frame rate your system can sustain in the demanding parts of your normal play, and keep it below the monitor’s VRR ceiling when using adaptive sync. For example, if your PC varies between 100 and 135 FPS in a chosen scene, a cap around the highest level it can hold without repeated drops will usually feel better than allowing brief spikes far above it. Do not select a number simply because it matches 144 Hz or 165 Hz; measure the sustained result in your own game.

A repeatable cap test

  1. Load a repeatable route or save, such as a busy city area where traffic and pedestrians stress the GPU and CPU.
  2. Start with native resolution, high anisotropic filtering, moderate anti-aliasing, and your preferred picture mode.
  3. Observe frame-time consistency while driving, turning the camera, and entering a crowded area. A counter that shows only an average FPS can hide spikes.
  4. Lower the cap in small steps until the game no longer repeatedly collides with the monitor ceiling or produces obvious hitching.
  5. Keep the cap for several minutes of ordinary play, then retest after changing any major graphics option.

Configure FreeSync or Adaptive Sync

FreeSync is useful when the monitor and GPU can vary refresh timing consistently. It cannot repair an unstable cable, an unsupported mode, or a game that is missing its frame-time target. Enable it only after confirming that the exact G5 revision and connection support it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitor-side setup

  1. Open the G5’s on-screen display and find the Game, FreeSync, or Adaptive-Sync control. The wording depends on the revision.
  2. Enable the adaptive-sync option, apply it, and watch for flicker or a disabled control elsewhere in the menu.
  3. If the manual specifies a fallback mode when adaptive sync is unavailable or unstable, use that supported fallback and select the highest refresh rate that remains stable.

PC-side verification

  1. Open your graphics driver’s display settings and confirm that variable refresh is enabled for the connected G5.
  2. Verify that the driver lists the intended native resolution and refresh rate rather than a television-style or scaled mode.
  3. Launch GTA V, apply the frame cap, and test a demanding scene. Look for brightness pulsing, black flashes, horizontal tearing, or sudden jumps between refresh behaviors.

Flicker after enabling FreeSync is a diagnostic signal, not a reason to keep changing unrelated picture controls. First test another supported refresh rate, confirm the cable and driver, and compare with adaptive sync disabled. If the monitor is stable only with the feature off, keep the highest stable fixed-refresh mode and revisit the issue after driver or monitor-firmware changes.

HDR: follow the game-maker’s display guidance

Rockstar Games Customer Support’s HDR troubleshooting guidance, updated August 25, 2026, recommends a specific setup for a supported HDR display:

  • Enable HDR on the display and in the operating system when both support it.
  • Enable the monitor’s Game Mode preset, if available.
  • Disable picture-enhancement features, including AI, Smart, Dynamic, or Adaptive picture settings.
  • Disable Dynamic Tone Mapping.
  • Enable HGIG when the display supports it.

Rockstar’s guidance explicitly says, “Enable the Game Mode preset, if available,” and advises disabling those enhancement features. These controls should not be layered on top of an aggressive custom picture mode while you are diagnosing HDR. If the image appears washed out, too dark, or strangely bright, return to the documented combination before changing GTA’s own HDR controls.

HDR behavior is model-dependent. A G5 that accepts an HDR signal may still have different peak-brightness and tone-mapping behavior from another revision. Treat the operating-system HDR toggle, monitor HDR mode, and in-game HDR calibration as one chain: change one link, then retest the same scene.

SDR picture controls for a clean, sharp image

For SDR, begin with the neutral or Graphics preset, moderate brightness matched to the room, and no artificial contrast or sharpness enhancement. Numeric OSD values published as a universal Odyssey G5 recipe would imply a colorimeter result that has not been established. Instead, adjust by visible targets:

Samsung 32” Odyssey G5 (G50F) Series QHD Gaming Monitor | 180Hz, Fast IPS Panel, HDR10, NVIDIA G-Sync Compatible, 1ms (GtG), AMD FreeSync™, Adjustable Stand, LS32FG502ENXZA
  • Samsung’s 32” Odyssey G5 QHD Gaming Monitor delivers brilliant visuals for exhilarating gameplay that’s more immersive than ever before.
  • QHD resolution (2560 x 1440) boasts incredibly detailed, pin-sharp images.
  • With a wide 178° viewing angle, the IPS panel consistently delivers crisp, clear hues from various viewpoints.
  • 180Hz Refresh Rate and 1ms response time (GtG) allow fast reactions for ultra-smooth gaming, plus G-Sync compatibility syncs the GPU and panel to reduce choppiness, screen lag, and image tearing.
  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth.
  • Raise brightness only until dark street detail is visible without turning black areas gray.
  • Lower it if white road markings, headlights, or menus look glaring in your room.
  • Keep contrast near the neutral position unless a specific calibration procedure for your exact revision says otherwise.
  • Use the least aggressive sharpness setting that leaves text and fine geometry clean. Oversharpening creates bright outlines around signs and buildings; undersharpening makes the entire image look blurred.

Make these adjustments with GTA at native resolution and with scaling disabled or at its native value. Otherwise, you may compensate for a rendering-resolution problem with OSD sharpening and create halos instead of real detail.

Diagnose a blurry GTA image

Blur appears everywhere, including menus

  • Confirm that Windows and GTA use the G5’s native resolution.
  • Check that the GPU driver has not selected a lower scaled mode.
  • Return frame scaling to its native value.
  • Disable monitor sharpness enhancements, then compare a neutral preset.
  • Use high anisotropic filtering and inspect distant textures while moving; do not judge only from a paused menu.

Edges are jagged or shimmer during movement

Increase anti-aliasing only if your frame-time budget allows it. Test FXAA, MSAA, and TXAA separately, because each trades edge quality, softness, and GPU load differently. If the image becomes smooth but the game starts missing your cap, reduce the anti-aliasing level and keep the stable frame rate.

Roads look clear but distant textures are muddy

Verify anisotropic filtering first. GTA V exposes up to 16x, and this setting specifically affects angled texture detail. Raising monitor sharpness cannot restore texture information that was lost in the game renderer.

Diagnose stutter, tearing, and flicker

Uneven motion without visible tearing

Use a stable cap rather than an uncapped frame rate. The documented default cap of 188 FPS and reports of heavy stutter above approximately 140 FPS are reasons to test a lower, sustained target, especially on a 144 Hz or 165 Hz display. Reduce GPU-heavy anti-aliasing before abandoning native resolution.

Tearing across the image

Confirm whether FreeSync is active both in the monitor and the GPU driver. Then keep the game below the monitor’s VRR ceiling with a cap your system can sustain. If VRR is unstable, disable it and compare a fixed-refresh configuration rather than mixing multiple changes.

Brightness pulsing or intermittent flicker

Test the exact refresh rate, cable, driver, and adaptive-sync state in that order. Some combinations documented for G5 monitors can flicker after a refresh-rate change. Select the highest stable mode, and use the model manual’s fallback when adaptive sync makes another control unavailable.

Resolve HDR and enhancement conflicts

If SDR is stable but HDR produces odd contrast, first disable HDR and confirm that native resolution, refresh, frame cap, and FreeSync behave normally. Then re-enable HDR using Game Mode, with AI/Smart/Dynamic/Adaptive enhancements and Dynamic Tone Mapping disabled, and HGIG enabled when supported. This isolates tone mapping from frame pacing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the problem occurs only after enabling an enhancement, leave that feature off. Rockstar’s guidance treats those modes as troubleshooting variables, not mandatory picture improvements.

Handle GTA V rendering errors

When GTA V reports ERR_GFX_STATE or fails to render, do not begin by cycling advanced monitor options. Rockstar’s support hub directs players toward current-patch, graphics-driver, and performance troubleshooting, and its documented graphics-API and launcher steps should come first.

  1. Confirm that GTA V is updated through its normal platform path.
  2. Install the current graphics driver, restart the computer, and retest.
  3. Follow Rockstar’s documented graphics-API and launcher troubleshooting for ERR_GFX_STATE.
  4. After the game renders normally, reapply native resolution, refresh rate, VRR, HDR, and the frame cap one at a time.

This order prevents an OSD experiment from masking a game-file, API, launcher, or driver problem.

A practical tuning order for different hardware

GPU has abundant headroom

Keep native resolution and high anisotropic filtering, then test stronger anti-aliasing while monitoring sustained frame time. Choose the highest refresh rate your G5 and connection hold without flicker, enable stable FreeSync, and cap below the ceiling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GPU frequently misses the target

Keep native resolution if possible, retain high anisotropic filtering, and reduce anti-aliasing before changing the monitor mode. A consistent lower cap is preferable to an uncapped result that repeatedly swings through the VRR range.

Image is sharp but motion feels delayed

Check whether VSync and driver-level synchronization are both imposing a queue. Test a controlled cap with FreeSync and compare latency in the same scene. Keep the combination that avoids tearing without introducing a noticeable queue delay.

Console or non-PC use

The exact GTA V graphics controls listed above are PC options. On a console, use the console’s supported native output and highest stable refresh mode, then configure the G5’s supported adaptive-sync or HDR controls. Do not assume that a PC-only frame cap, driver toggle, or graphics option exists on the console version.

Keep a known-good profile

Once the image and pacing are stable, record the exact G5 model, input, cable, resolution, refresh rate, FreeSync state, HDR state, picture preset, and GTA graphics choices. Save a monitor profile if the OSD provides one. If a driver update, game patch, or display change causes trouble, restore this profile and alter one variable at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A good final profile is not the one with the highest on-screen FPS counter. It is the one that preserves native-resolution detail, keeps texture and edge quality within your GPU budget, avoids tearing or VRR flicker, and maintains consistent frame times during the busiest GTA scenes you actually play.
