For the documented 27-inch Samsung Odyssey G5 C27G55T, the dependable starting point is 2560×1440 at 144Hz, FreeSync Premium enabled in both the monitor and graphics driver, HDR enabled only for HDR games or video, and the default or sRGB picture mode for ordinary desktop work. Set brightness for your room and leave contrast near its factory value until you have a measured calibration target.
Those settings are not universal across every Odyssey G5. Samsung has sold several generations, sizes, and suffixes, including models that expose higher refresh rates. Read the complete model number on the rear label or in the monitor’s information menu before copying a setting. A manual for one LC27G55T variant can differ from another.

Identify your exact Odyssey G5 first
“Odyssey G5” is a family name, not one fixed specification. The C27G55T 27-inch model documented by Samsung is a 2560×1440-class display with a 144Hz maximum refresh rate, AMD FreeSync Premium, HDR10 support, a 1000R curve, and a stated 1ms response time. Other G5 generations and sizes may use different maximum refresh rates, inputs, menus, or firmware.

Recommended baseline settings
Start from a known, reversible configuration instead of changing every slider at once. The following profiles separate SDR desktop work, fast SDR games, and HDR content because the correct behavior is different in each mode.
| Use case | Resolution and refresh | Picture mode | Variable refresh | HDR | Color approach |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SDR desktop, browsing, and office work | Native resolution; highest stable mode exposed by the exact model | Default or sRGB, if available | FreeSync/Adaptive-Sync may remain enabled | Off | Set brightness for the room; keep contrast near default. |
| SDR gaming | Native resolution when performance allows; otherwise keep the display’s native mode and use in-game scaling | Default, sRGB, or a neutral game mode | On in the OSD and GPU driver | Off | Adjust brightness only after checking black visibility in the game. |
| HDR games and video | Native resolution and a supported high-refresh mode | HDR mode selected by the monitor when HDR is active | On if supported in HDR by your model | On in the operating system and application | Use the application’s HDR calibration; do not reuse SDR RGB gains blindly. |
Samsung does not publish one universal RGB preset for the G5 family. Panel variation, room lighting, the selected input, and SDR versus HDR all change the result. A value that looks balanced on one unit can tint another.
How to get 144Hz (or the model’s actual maximum)
The monitor, cable path, graphics driver, and operating system must all expose the same mode. A high-refresh label on the product page does not force the computer to select it.
- Connect the monitor directly to the graphics output. Avoid an unverified adapter, dock, or splitter while diagnosing refresh-rate limits. Use the connector and cable type allowed by your model’s manual; Samsung’s documentation should control because port bandwidth is not identical across G5 variants.
- Open the monitor OSD and restore a sensible input configuration. Select the active input, confirm that the image is coming from the intended GPU, and note the information screen’s current resolution and refresh rate.
- Set the native resolution in the operating system. In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Display resolution and choose 2560×1440 for the documented C27G55T. A different G5 size may have a different native value, so follow its manual.
- Choose the highest available refresh rate. In Windows, use Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, select the Odyssey G5, and choose 144Hz for a C27G55T if it is listed. If your exact model documents 165Hz or 180Hz and that mode appears, select it; if it does not appear, do not force it with an unsupported custom mode.
- Set the same mode in the GPU control panel. Select the monitor under the display section, choose the native PC resolution rather than a television timing when both are offered, and select the highest stable refresh rate. The labels differ between driver vendors and versions.
- Verify the result in three places. Check the operating system’s advanced-display page, the monitor’s information panel, and a game or refresh-rate test that reports the active mode. A game capped at 60 frames per second can still be running on a 144Hz desktop; the cap is a separate setting.
- Test stability before changing image quality. Move windows, scroll text, and play a demanding title for several minutes. Flicker, signal dropouts, or a black screen indicate a connection, driver, bandwidth, or unsupported-mode problem rather than a color-calibration problem.
If 144Hz is missing
- Recheck the complete model suffix. A larger or newer G5 may have a different documented limit.
- Confirm that the operating system is addressing the Odyssey G5 rather than a duplicate or virtual display.
- Remove adapters and docks temporarily and retest with a direct connection.
- Install the current graphics driver offered for your GPU and restart after changing the display mode.
- Try the other input on the monitor only if the manual lists it as supporting the desired mode.
- Reset the monitor’s picture and system settings, then repeat the resolution and refresh selection.
Enable FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync correctly
FreeSync works only when the monitor’s variable-refresh option and the matching option in the graphics driver are both enabled. Samsung identifies AMD FreeSync Premium as a core feature of the documented C27G55T.

- Open the monitor OSD and find the item labelled FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync, or a model-specific equivalent. Set it to On.
- Open the GPU driver’s display or gaming section and enable its variable-refresh setting for the Odyssey G5. Apply the setting to this display, not just to a global profile that may exclude it.
- Keep the monitor at a supported resolution and refresh rate. FreeSync does not create a refresh mode that the panel or connection cannot provide.
- Launch a game whose frame rate varies. The purpose is to synchronize panel refresh with changing frame delivery, reducing tearing and uneven motion within the monitor’s supported operating range.
- Recheck the OSD after enabling the feature. Some G5 controls, including portions of overdrive, black level, or gamma behavior, can become unavailable or change operation in variable-refresh mode. That is expected behavior documented by some model manuals, not proof that the panel is defective.
If enabling FreeSync causes flicker or intermittent blanking, first return to the model’s documented resolution and refresh mode, test a direct cable connection, and update the GPU driver. If the problem persists only at the very top refresh rate, test one step lower; a stable mode is more useful than an unreliable maximum.
Use HDR10 only for HDR content
The documented G5 supports HDR10. HDR is a content mode, not a permanent desktop enhancement. Leaving Windows HDR enabled for ordinary SDR work can make the desktop, SDR games, and applications look dim, gray, or oversaturated depending on the operating system and game’s tone mapping.
- Enable HDR in the operating system. In Windows, open Settings → System → Display, select the Odyssey G5, and switch on the HDR control when you are about to view HDR content.
- Enable HDR in the game or video application. Many games have a separate HDR toggle and a paper-white or peak-brightness calibration screen. Follow that application’s instructions rather than copying an SDR brightness value.
- Let the monitor switch to its HDR behavior. The OSD may lock or rename picture controls while an HDR signal is active. Do not assume a disabled SDR slider is a fault.
- Turn HDR back off for normal SDR work. Return to the SDR picture mode when the HDR game or video ends. This keeps desktop tone mapping predictable and makes SDR color adjustments meaningful.
Samsung documents HDR10 support but does not publish one universal HDR slider recipe for every G5. HDR output depends on the exact model, source device, game, and room, so use the application’s calibration pattern and judge highlight detail and shadow detail rather than chasing a numbered preset.

Brightness
Brightness is the first control to set because room light changes perceived contrast. Start at the factory value, then lower or raise it until white pages are comfortable and dark scenes remain visible without looking gray. Make this adjustment separately for daytime and a dark room if necessary. There is no single correct brightness number for every panel or room.

Contrast
Keep contrast close to its default initially. Extreme values can clip bright steps or crush shadow detail. Use a test pattern with distinct near-white and near-black levels if you are calibrating; otherwise, return to default when you cannot tell which detail is being lost.
Gamma and black level
Choose the neutral or default gamma option unless a game or calibration target calls for another value. Black-level controls must match the source’s range. A mismatch can make the entire image look washed out or make shadow detail disappear, so change the GPU output range and monitor black-level option together rather than guessing at RGB gains.
Sharpness
Keep sharpness at its neutral point for desktop text. Excessive sharpening adds halos around letters and objects; too little can soften fine detail. The neutral point is model-specific, so use the OSD’s default as the reference rather than assuming that 50 is neutral on every G5.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Check whether HDR is unintentionally active. Turn HDR off in the operating system and game, then compare the normal SDR desktop. If the image immediately returns to normal, use HDR only for HDR content and calibrate each mode separately.
- Set a full-range RGB output where supported. In the GPU driver, choose RGB with the full range for a PC display when that option is available. If the driver offers a limited range, the monitor’s black-level setting must match it. Do not select full range on one side and limited range on the other.
- Remove duplicate processing. Disable an operating-system HDR conversion, game-level HDR, or monitor enhancement when another layer is already performing the conversion. One tone-mapping path is easier to control than several stacked together.
- Verify the input and cable. Confirm that the OSD shows the intended input and that the cable is seated. Test a direct connection without a dock, switch, or adapter. Replace the cable only with one appropriate for the model’s documented mode.
- Return picture controls to default. Reset the monitor’s color and picture settings, select the default or sRGB mode for SDR, and retest before changing individual RGB channels.
- Adjust RGB gains only as a final, measured step. RGB values are panel-specific. Change one channel at a time using a known calibration pattern, record the original values, and stop if neutral grays become tinted.
An owner-provided starting point
A 2022 owner video for model C27G55TQWE reported brightness 75, contrast 70, sharpness 60, and RGB values 50/44/52. Those numbers are an experiment for that particular unit, not a Samsung recommendation and not a universal G5 preset. They may look worse on a different suffix, panel, room, or input range.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand OSD changes when modes switch
The G5 can expose different controls in SDR, HDR, and variable-refresh modes. If a slider is grayed out, first note the active signal type and FreeSync state. Disable HDR temporarily, or turn variable refresh off for a diagnostic test, then see whether the control returns. Consult the exact Samsung manual before treating a mode-dependent restriction as a malfunction.
Keep a short record of your working settings: model suffix, input, resolution, refresh rate, HDR state, FreeSync state, brightness, contrast, gamma, black level, and RGB values. This makes it possible to restore a known-good profile after a driver update or a factory reset.

Model and connection caveats
Do not infer a 165Hz or 180Hz capability from the G5 name. Samsung’s range includes 144Hz models and newer higher-refresh variants. The exact product page and manual determine the maximum mode, supported inputs, firmware behavior, and any restrictions when HDR or FreeSync is enabled.

A single port-bandwidth recommendation cannot be applied safely to every G5 suffix. Use the connector listed for the desired resolution and refresh in your manual, and verify the mode in the OSD after connecting. If a port exposes only a lower refresh rate, changing color settings will not unlock a missing bandwidth mode.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely checks | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Only 60Hz appears | Wrong model assumption, adapter or dock, driver mode, or unsupported connector | Confirm the suffix, connect directly, select native resolution, update the driver, and use the manual’s supported input. |
| 144Hz appears but the screen flickers | Marginal cable path, unstable top mode, or variable-refresh interaction | Retest direct connection, update the driver, verify FreeSync settings, and try one lower stable refresh rate. |
| Tearing during games | FreeSync disabled in one of the two required locations | Enable FreeSync/Adaptive-Sync in the OSD and GPU driver, then retest with a variable frame rate. |
| Desktop looks gray after enabling HDR | HDR active for SDR content or mismatched tone mapping | Disable HDR for the desktop, or use it only with HDR-capable games and video. |
| Blacks look gray or crushed | GPU and monitor range mismatch | Match full or limited RGB range on both sides; reset black level before adjusting RGB gains. |
| Text has bright halos | Sharpness or enhancement set too high | Return sharpness to its neutral/default point and disable unnecessary enhancements. |
| Colors are tinted after a preset | Preset copied from another panel or model | Reset to default or sRGB and calibrate for your own unit and lighting. |
| OSD controls are unavailable | HDR or FreeSync mode changes the available menu | Check the active signal and consult the exact model manual before changing connections. |
A practical setup sequence
For most owners, the fastest reliable order is: identify the suffix; connect directly; select the native resolution; select the highest stable refresh rate; enable FreeSync in both locations; set SDR brightness for the room; leave contrast and color near default; then enable HDR only when an HDR game or video is actually running. If the image is washed out, fix HDR state and RGB range before touching individual color channels.
This sequence gives the documented C27G55T its intended 144Hz, 2560×1440 experience without assuming that every Odyssey G5 has identical hardware. When your model’s manual specifies a different native resolution, refresh ceiling, connector, or menu label, that model-specific information takes precedence.
