That wording matters when comparing foldables. A credit shown at checkout may combine an underlying market estimate with a temporary bonus. It is useful for lowering the cost of a replacement phone, but it is not a completed resale transaction and should not be converted into a depreciation percentage.

Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold — the clearest US alternative
A 2026 buying guide identifies the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold among current book-style foldables in the United States. Google also has an official product page; the page opened for this comparison was localized for Japan, so the configuration, price and trade-in information you see can vary by country. The product page is Google Store Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
The available material does not establish that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold resells better than a Galaxy Z Fold. Before buying, obtain a quote in the country where you will eventually sell or trade the phone. Confirm that the model is officially sold in your country, that the seller provides a local warranty, and that replacement or repair service is available where you live.
For a used purchase, ask the seller for the original invoice or another proof of purchase, the remaining warranty period, and the return procedure. These details affect how much risk you take on even though they do not establish future depreciation.

Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold — an older comparison point

The same 2025 comparison mentions the OnePlus Open. OnePlus US operates a trade-in process, but the program material opened for this topic does not state a current Open resale value. Its process includes an estimated value, shipment of the old device and a later determination by OnePlus. Read the current OnePlus US trade-in page and trade-in rules if the model is sold in your market.
A trade-in program demonstrates that a redemption route exists; it does not demonstrate a particular retention rate. Verify regional sales, software support and warranty coverage before comparing the Open with a new foldable.

Why a large trade-in credit can mislead
Promotional value is conditional
Google says an estimate may include promotional value and can change after the device is inspected. The conditions can include the model submitted, physical and functional condition, the purchase being made, and the promotion’s dates. A credit is therefore transaction-specific.
One example is a Google Store Japan promotion shown on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold product page in 2025. It displayed a maximum trade-in amount of ¥107,700 for an eligible Pixel 9 Pro Fold, with conditions and an end date of October 13, 2025. That promotion has expired, was Japan-specific and is not a current quote or a cross-market resale benchmark.

Historical Samsung credits are not resale prices
Android Central reported in July 2025 that Samsung preorder credits toward the Galaxy Z Fold 7 reached $900 for a Galaxy Z Fold 5 and $800 for a Galaxy Z Fold 4. Those were historical promotional credits applied to a preorder. They were not independent private-sale prices, and they should not be used to calculate retention without a comparable original purchase price and a like-for-like used-sale amount.

Business programs are a separate category
Samsung Business states that qualifying models and credits can change and lists condition and eligibility requirements. Its program is designed for business trade-ins and bulk transactions, so it should not be used as a consumer resale benchmark. How to compare your real transaction
Use the following sequence for each model you are considering. Completing the same steps for every phone prevents a headline promotion from hiding a higher total cost.
- Define the market. Select the country where you will buy, use and eventually sell the phone. US and UK programs can have different eligible models, currencies, taxes, warranties and credit forms.
- Fix the configuration. Record model name, storage capacity, color if it affects inventory, unlocked or carrier status, and whether the phone is new, open-box, refurbished or used.
- Grade the condition honestly. Note display scratches, frame damage, hinge wear, camera or biometric faults, battery condition, water exposure and missing accessories. Photograph the device before shipment.
- Request the current estimate. Use the manufacturer’s trade-in calculator for the exact model and answer every condition question accurately. Save a screenshot or PDF showing the estimate, date and promotion terms.
- Separate base value from bonus value. Identify whether the displayed amount includes a temporary promotion. A bonus that disappears outside a launch window should not be treated as the phone’s normal market value.
- Read the inspection rule. Check what happens if the recipient finds a different condition: revised credit, return shipment, a fee or cancellation. Google states that final value is determined after inspection; other programs can have their own procedures.
- Identify the form of credit. Determine whether the value is refunded to a payment method, applied only to a new device, issued as store credit or paid in another form. Store credit is less flexible than cash from a private sale.
- Check timing. Record the promotion’s start and end dates, the deadline to ship the old device and when credit is issued. A delayed credit changes the cash you need at purchase.
- Price a private sale separately. Look for completed transactions for the same model, storage, condition and region where reliable data is available. Do not substitute an asking price or a manufacturer credit for a completed sale.
- Calculate total exposure. Subtract the dependable, non-promotional value from the purchase price, then add any required accessories, shipping, insurance or repair risk. Compare that amount with a used or refurbished unit carrying a meaningful warranty.
New versus used or refurbished
When buying new makes sense
A new foldable gives you the longest remaining warranty and the clearest condition at purchase. It can also qualify for a launch trade-in bonus. The trade-off is that you pay the highest initial price, and a bonus may expire before you eventually trade the phone.
When a used or refurbished unit reduces risk
Buying a used or refurbished phone lowers the dollars initially exposed to depreciation. That is a risk-management benefit, not proof that the model will retain a higher percentage of its price. Check the warranty length, who honors it, the return window, hinge and display inspection standards, battery condition and whether parts or repairs are available locally.

A low purchase price is not automatically a good deal if the seller offers no return period or if a screen or hinge repair would consume the savings. Ask for an unlocked-device confirmation and verify that the serial number and warranty status match the listing.

- Counting a launch bonus as normal value: record the underlying estimate and the bonus separately.
- Comparing different conditions: a flawless, unlocked 512GB phone is not comparable with a scratched, carrier-locked 256GB unit.
- Ignoring inspection risk: the first online estimate is not necessarily the final credit.
- Using business credits as consumer evidence: bulk-program terms can have different eligibility and pricing.
- Mixing countries: a Japanese promotional amount cannot validate a US or UK resale claim.
- Confusing asking prices with sales: an unsold listing does not show what buyers actually paid.
