For most buyers, the Galaxy S25 Ultra is the best Samsung phone with a dedicated telephoto camera. Samsung lists two rear telephoto cameras: a 50MP unit with 5x optical zoom and a 10MP unit with 3x optical zoom. The Galaxy S24 Ultra has the same documented 50MP 5x and 10MP 3x arrangement and can be the smarter purchase when it costs less. Choose the Galaxy S23 Ultra if a native 10x optical telephoto is your priority. The regular Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ are smaller, simpler choices with one 10MP 3x telephoto.
This guide separates true optical reach from Samsung’s hybrid and digital “Space Zoom” figures, then matches each model to the type of photography, size, support horizon and buying situation you care about.

Quick answer: which Galaxy telephoto phone should you buy?
| Phone | Dedicated telephoto hardware | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S25 Ultra | 50MP 5x optical telephoto plus 10MP 3x optical telephoto | Most buyers who want the newest, most flexible two-camera system | Ultra-sized phone; current price and stock vary |
| Galaxy S24 Ultra | 50MP 5x optical telephoto plus 10MP 3x optical telephoto | Value hunters who find it meaningfully cheaper than the S25 Ultra | Older generation than the S25 Ultra |
| Galaxy S23 Ultra | Separate 3x and 10x optical zoom cameras | Photographers who specifically want native 10x optical reach | Older hardware can mean less new stock and a shorter remaining support horizon |
| Galaxy S24 | 10MP 3x optical telephoto | A smaller flagship-style phone with real telephoto hardware | Only one telephoto camera; no native 5x or 10x lens |
| Galaxy S24+ | 10MP 3x optical telephoto | A larger non-Ultra alternative with the same single telephoto arrangement | Less flexible zoom coverage than either Ultra model |
“Optical” describes magnification produced by a dedicated lens and sensor combination. A 10x optical camera and a 10x image created by cropping or software are not equivalent. That distinction is why the S23 Ultra remains relevant even though the S24 Ultra and S25 Ultra are newer.

What counts as a dedicated telephoto camera?
A dedicated telephoto camera is a separate rear camera designed for a narrower field of view than the main camera. It lets the phone capture distant subjects without relying entirely on a crop from the main sensor. The practical benefit is native optical framing at the lens’s stated magnification.

- Stunning 6.9″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, ultra‑bright up to ~2600 nits, HDR support, “Vision Booster,” and adaptive color tone — giving vivid colours, great outdoor visibility, and super‑smooth scrolling.
- Powerful internals: it runs on the new Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy (3 nm) chip, with 12 GB (or in some markets up to 16 GB) RAM and up to 1 TB UFS 4.0 storage — offering significantly improved CPU/GPU/NPU performance, especially for AI tasks, gaming, and heavy multitasking.
- Advanced quad‑camera system: 200 MP wide main sensor, plus a 50 MP ultrawide, a 50 MP periscope telephoto (5× optical zoom), and a 10 MP telephoto (3× optical zoom) — giving flexibility from ultra‑wide through detailed telephoto shots, and strong performance in varied lighting.
- 5,000 mAh battery with 45 W fast wired charging, wireless charging (Qi2) and reverse wireless charging — balancing long battery life with flexible charging options.
- Durable, premium build: Titanium‑frame body, protected by Corning Gorilla Armor 2 glass, with IP68 dust/water resistance, ultrasonic in‑display fingerprint sensor, modern connectivity (5G, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth, UWB, USB‑C), and long‑term software support (Android 15 / One UI 7, promised 7 major OS/security updates).
Samsung’s specifications use “optical zoom” for the native reach of each telephoto module. The S25 Ultra and S24 Ultra each have two such modules, at 3x and 5x. The S23 Ultra has separate 3x and 10x optical zoom capability. The Galaxy S24 and S24+ each have one 3x telephoto camera.
Those are hardware capabilities, not promises that every scene will look equally detailed at every distance. Light, subject movement, focus and the phone’s processing still affect a photograph. The useful comparison is the range of native focal options available before software magnification becomes the dominant part of the result.
Galaxy S25 Ultra: best overall dual-telephoto setup
What the specifications say
Samsung Mobile Press lists a 50MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom and a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom for the Galaxy S25 Ultra. This gives the phone two dedicated telephoto viewpoints rather than one lens that must cover every intermediate distance.

Why it is the default recommendation
The S25 Ultra is the newest model in this comparison with Samsung’s documented 3x-and-5x dual-telephoto arrangement. For a buyer starting from scratch, that combination offers the broadest current choice among the two-lens systems covered here. You can select the shorter lens for closer subjects and the 5x lens when a tighter frame is needed, then use software zoom above those native points when necessary.
It is also the least compromised choice if you regularly alternate between people, architecture, stage performances, travel details and distant signs. You are not buying a phone whose entire telephoto strategy depends on one fixed magnification.
Who should skip it
- Choose the S24 Ultra instead if its street price is substantially lower and you do not need the newest generation.
- Choose the S23 Ultra if a genuine 10x optical camera matters more than having the newer 5x-and-3x pairing.
- Choose the regular S24 if an Ultra-sized phone is too large and a single 3x camera is sufficient.
Samsung has not provided a current price or stock figure in its specifications, so check the actual new, refurbished or used offer available in your country before deciding that the S25 Ultra is worth its premium.

Galaxy S24 Ultra: the value alternative with nearly the same reach
Hardware and official zoom claims
Samsung’s Galaxy S24 announcement lists the same two dedicated telephoto specifications as the S25 Ultra: a 50MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom and a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom. That makes the S24 Ultra’s lens layout closely related to the newer model for the specific question of native telephoto reach.
Samsung Newsroom describes the S24 Ultra system this way: “Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Quad Tele System, with new 5x optical zoom lens, works with the 50MP sensor to enable optical-quality performance at zoom levels from 2x, 3x, 5x to 10x magnification thanks to Adaptive Pixel Sensor.” The statement refers to optical-quality output across those listed levels, not to four separate optical lenses or a native 10x telephoto camera.
When it is the smarter purchase
The S24 Ultra becomes the better value when its purchase price is meaningfully below the S25 Ultra while both models meet your camera requirements. The core decision is not whether the S24 Ultra has a real telephoto camera—it clearly has two—but whether the newer generation’s broader software and support runway justify the difference for you.
Because exact current prices were not established, use a percentage or fixed-budget rule rather than an assumed discount. Compare the complete offers in your market, including storage configuration, warranty, return period and whether the phone is new, refurbished or used.
What it cannot do
The S24 Ultra does not provide the S23 Ultra’s dedicated 10x optical telephoto. Its longest native optical lens is 5x. At 10x, the phone relies on the system Samsung describes as delivering optical-quality performance through the 50MP sensor and Adaptive Pixel Sensor, rather than switching to a native 10x module.
Galaxy S23 Ultra: the specialist choice for native 10x optical zoom
The distinctive camera
Samsung’s specification sheet for the Galaxy S23 Ultra lists separate 3x and 10x optical zoom capability. That dedicated 10x telephoto is the longest native optical reach among the phones in this guide.
If you routinely photograph subjects that remain far away—such as details on a distant building, wildlife from a fixed viewpoint or performers across a venue—the 10x lens can frame them optically without asking a 3x or 5x camera to crop as aggressively. The advantage is specific: native 10x reach, not a claim that every 10x photograph will automatically outperform newer processing.

Why age matters
The S23 Ultra is an older generation than the S24 Ultra and S25 Ultra. That affects the buying decision in two ways. First, availability may shift toward refurbished and used inventory as new stock becomes less common. Second, the remaining software-support horizon is shorter than for a newer model, although the exact end date depends on Samsung’s support policy and the device’s sales region.

Who should buy it
- Buy the S23 Ultra when native 10x optical reach is the feature that determines your choice.
- Consider an S24 Ultra or S25 Ultra when you prefer newer hardware, a 5x high-resolution telephoto and a longer expected support runway.
- Do not choose the S23 Ultra merely because a listing advertises “100x” or another large zoom number; those figures include software magnification.
Galaxy S24 and S24+: the smaller and simpler telephoto options
Shared camera capability
Samsung’s camera guide says both the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ include a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and support 30x Space Zoom. Each phone therefore has a genuine dedicated telephoto lens, but only one.
The 3x module is useful when the standard camera is too wide for a portrait, product detail or nearby subject. Once you move beyond the lens’s native 3x viewpoint, the phone’s zoom system combines cropping and software processing rather than adding a second optical telephoto camera.
How they differ from the Ultra models
The regular S24 and S24+ do not offer the Ultra models’ two-camera telephoto flexibility. They have no dedicated 5x lens and no dedicated 10x lens. Their 30x Space Zoom label should be read as a maximum software-assisted zoom mode, not as 30x optical magnification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThey are sensible choices for people who value a less imposing phone or a lower tier of the Galaxy range and only occasionally need tighter framing. They are not substitutes for an Ultra if your photography depends on switching between multiple native telephoto focal lengths.
S24 or S24+?
Samsung’s published camera specifications establish the telephoto hardware but do not provide verified dimensions, weights or current prices for either model. Choose between the two based on the size, battery, storage and regional offer you can confirm at purchase; their documented telephoto specification is the same 10MP 3x arrangement.

Native optical reach compared
| Model | Native telephoto points documented by Samsung | Number of dedicated telephoto cameras | Software-assisted zoom note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S25 Ultra | 3x and 5x optical | Two | Higher zoom levels use processing; no native 10x lens is listed |
| Galaxy S24 Ultra | 3x and 5x optical | Two | Samsung describes optical-quality performance at 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x with Adaptive Pixel Sensor |
| Galaxy S23 Ultra | 3x and 10x optical | Two | Its 10x point is native optical; larger advertised zoom figures are not additional optical lenses |
| Galaxy S24 | 3x optical | One | 30x Space Zoom is software-assisted beyond the native 3x camera |
| Galaxy S24+ | 3x optical | One | 30x Space Zoom is software-assisted beyond the native 3x camera |
This table is the central buying distinction. The S23 Ultra reaches 10x through a dedicated optical camera. The S24 Ultra and S25 Ultra reach 5x optically with a higher-resolution telephoto and use computational techniques for 10x. The S24 and S24+ stop at one 3x optical module.
Optical zoom, hybrid zoom and Space Zoom are different
Optical zoom
Optical zoom comes from the lens and sensor selecting a narrower field of view. In this guide, the documented optical points are 3x, 5x and 10x, depending on the model. These are the figures to use when comparing dedicated telephoto hardware.
Hybrid and sensor-assisted zoom
A phone can combine a telephoto camera with a high-resolution sensor, cropping, alignment and image processing to produce an image at an intermediate or higher magnification. Samsung’s S24 Ultra statement specifically describes optical-quality performance from 2x through 10x using the 50MP sensor and Adaptive Pixel Sensor. That is a processing-assisted result, not proof of a separate 10x optical lens.
Space Zoom
Space Zoom is Samsung’s name for high-magnification zoom modes that extend beyond the native optical cameras. The Galaxy S24 and S24+ are documented with 30x Space Zoom. Treat that number as a maximum shooting mode, not as a specification for a 30x telephoto camera.
When comparing phones, ask two separate questions: “What is the longest dedicated optical lens?” and “What is the advertised maximum zoom?” The first answers the hardware question; the second includes software.

If 10x optical reach is non-negotiable
Select the Galaxy S23 Ultra. It is the only model in this comparison with a dedicated 10x optical telephoto. Accept that you may need to buy refurbished or used and that its remaining support period is shorter than a newer phone’s.
If you want a smaller phone with genuine telephoto hardware
Choose the Galaxy S24. It has the same documented 10MP 3x telephoto as the S24+ in a smaller body. The trade-off is a single optical telephoto point and no native 5x or 10x lens.
If you want a larger non-Ultra model
Choose the Galaxy S24+. Its telephoto specification is the same 10MP 3x camera as the S24, so the decision should rest on the size and other non-camera requirements you verify in the listing.
Size, price, support and availability: what to verify before ordering
The camera specifications summarized here do not establish current prices, dimensions, weights or stock, and those variables change by country, storage configuration and seller. Check them directly for the exact model and condition you are considering.
- Price: compare current new, refurbished and used prices rather than relying on launch pricing or an old review.
- Condition: used Ultra phones should have clear photos of every camera lens, a stated battery condition and a return window.
- Availability: the S23 Ultra is more likely than the newer models to appear through refurbished or used channels as inventory changes.
- Support horizon: newer generations generally leave more time for future software support, but verify Samsung’s policy for your region and the specific device.
- Size and weight: confirm the manufacturer’s current dimensions and weight if one-handed use or pocketability matters; those figures are not established in the camera specifications summarized here.
A practical buying checklist
- Decide whether you need a native 10x lens. If yes, limit the shortlist to the Galaxy S23 Ultra.
- If 3x and 5x optical options are enough, compare the Galaxy S25 Ultra and Galaxy S24 Ultra.
- If you only need occasional telephoto framing, consider the Galaxy S24 or S24+ and accept their single 3x camera.
- Read the listing’s exact model name. “Ultra” is important here because the S24 and S24+ do not share the Ultra telephoto layout.
- Check whether the quoted zoom is optical or Space Zoom. Do not treat a 30x or larger headline number as a native lens specification.
- Compare the complete price and warranty for new, refurbished and used stock in your market.
- For used phones, test the 3x, 5x or 10x camera that influenced your decision, including autofocus and image stabilization behavior, before the return period expires.
Common mistakes when comparing Galaxy zoom cameras
Mistaking maximum zoom for optical reach
A 30x Space Zoom label on the S24 or S24+ does not mean those phones have a 30x optical telephoto. Their documented dedicated lens is 3x.
Assuming newer always means longer optical zoom
The S25 Ultra and S24 Ultra are newer than the S23 Ultra, but their longest listed native optical telephoto is 5x rather than 10x. Newer processing and hardware do not change that lens specification.
Ignoring the second telephoto camera
The difference between one 3x camera and two cameras at 3x plus 5x affects how often the phone can use a native lens instead of cropping. Include the number of dedicated telephoto modules in your comparison, not just megapixels.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Buying an older 10x model without checking condition
The S23 Ultra’s optical advantage is valuable only if the phone is in good working order and has enough remaining support for your plans. A lower used price should be balanced against battery wear, lens damage and seller protections.
Final recommendation
Buy the Galaxy S25 Ultra for the newest documented dual-telephoto system: 50MP 5x optical plus 10MP 3x optical. Buy the Galaxy S24 Ultra when it delivers that same basic native reach at a clearly lower verified price. Pick the Galaxy S23 Ultra only when its dedicated 10x optical camera is the feature you value most. Choose the Galaxy S24 or S24+ when a single 3x telephoto is enough and you prefer a non-Ultra design.
