The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is the best Galaxy choice for zoom photography when you want the newest dedicated telephoto system. Samsung lists separate 3x and 5x optical telephoto cameras, plus 2x and 10x optical-quality modes and zoom up to 100x. The Galaxy S25 Ultra is the better previous-generation alternative, while the Galaxy S24 Ultra remains a capable option if you find it at a substantial discount.
The important distinction is that only the dedicated lens positions are native optical zoom. The 2x and 10x “optical-quality” settings combine sensor cropping and computational processing, and the 100x setting is digital/Space Zoom rather than a long, physically interchangeable-style lens. That difference determines which phone is appropriate for portraits, wildlife, sports, travel details or very distant subjects.

None of these specifications alone proves that one phone produces sharper images in every situation. Samsung’s specification sheets establish the lens positions and zoom labels, but they do not provide independent sharpness tests, night-zoom scores, autofocus measurements or keeper rates. Treat the table below as a guide to hardware and processing modes, not as a laboratory ranking.
What “optical,” “optical-quality” and “digital” zoom mean
Native optical zoom
Native optical zoom comes from a dedicated telephoto camera and lens position. The lens changes the angle of view before the image reaches the sensor, so the phone does not need to enlarge a small central crop to create the framing. On the three Ultra models compared here, the documented native telephoto positions are the focal lengths labeled 3x and 5x, although the S24 Ultra specification also lists a 10x telephoto position.
A native telephoto position is most useful when your subject naturally falls near that framing: a person across a room, a landmark on a street, a stage performer or an animal that you cannot approach. Moving between the dedicated positions can preserve more detail than immediately jumping to an extreme digital setting.

Samsung uses “optical-quality” for intermediate settings that are intended to look closer to optical capture than a simple enlarged crop. The phone can combine a crop from a higher-resolution sensor with computational processing to produce the requested framing. This can be useful when the subject sits between two native lenses, but it should not be described as a separate physical telephoto lens.
The S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra specifications list 2x and 10x optical-quality modes. Those labels describe the intended output quality, not an additional pair of lenses. In practical terms, results depend on light, focus, subject movement and the detail available to the sensor at the moment you press the shutter.
Digital and Space Zoom
Digital zoom enlarges image data after capture or crops a sensor readout. At very high magnifications, the phone must infer or reconstruct detail, so fine textures, lettering and hair can become less reliable. Samsung calls the maximum mode “100x” on all three models discussed here, with the S26 Ultra page describing zoom up to 100x digital zoom and the S25 Ultra and S24 Ultra sheets using the “100x Space Zoom” name.
A 100x frame can still help you identify or compose a distant subject in bright, steady conditions. It is not equivalent to a 100x optical lens, and the number should not be used as a promise of consistently usable detail.

Galaxy S26 Ultra: best current choice for Samsung zoom
Why it leads the lineup
The S26 Ultra combines dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras with 2x and 10x optical-quality settings. That gives you a native option for moderate telephoto framing, a longer native position for distant subjects and processed steps intended to bridge the gaps. Samsung lists a maximum of 100x digital zoom.
This arrangement is versatile because many everyday subjects fall between ordinary wide-angle framing and very long reach. A 3x view can isolate a person without the exaggerated perspective of a close wide-angle shot, while 5x can fill the frame with a stage, building detail or animal that is farther away. The 2x and 10x positions are available when you need an intermediate or more distant composition without manually cropping after capture.
Who should buy it
- Photographers buying new and wanting Samsung’s latest documented zoom system.
- Travelers who photograph a mixture of portraits, architecture, performances and distant details.
- People who want dedicated telephoto cameras rather than relying only on a crop from the main camera.
- Users who understand that 100x is a digital maximum and plan to use it selectively.
What is not established by the specification
Samsung’s cited S26 Ultra information does not establish an independent ranking for sharpness, low-light telephoto quality, stabilization effectiveness or autofocus speed. It also does not provide a universal price, storage configuration or availability statement for every country. Verify those details for your market and purchase date.
Galaxy S25 Ultra: the previous-generation value alternative
Documented zoom layout
Samsung’s 2025 S25 Series specification lists 3x and 5x optical zoom, 2x and 10x optical-quality zoom and 100x Space Zoom. In other words, the published zoom positions closely match the S26 Ultra’s documented arrangement, but the S25 Ultra is an earlier generation.
That makes the S25 Ultra a logical value candidate when a retailer’s current price is meaningfully lower than the newer model. You still get two listed native telephoto positions and the same named optical-quality steps, while avoiding the premium normally attached to the newest release. The exact saving depends on storage, region, promotions and stock, none of which is fixed by the specification sheet.
Best use cases
- Buying a premium Samsung phone after a newer model has launched.
- Photographing people, pets, travel scenes and events where 3x and 5x cover most compositions.
- Choosing a phone on documented lens positions rather than on a 100x headline alone.
Checks before purchase
Confirm that the listing is for the S25 Ultra, not another S25-series model, and check storage capacity, warranty region and software-support terms. Retail pages can show different prices or inventory by country, and the specification sheet does not guarantee that every configuration remains available.

Galaxy S24 Ultra: the discounted option with a listed 10x telephoto position
What makes it different
Samsung’s 2024 S24 Series specification sheet lists “2x | 3x | 5x | 10x Quad Telephoto” and 100x Space Zoom. That is the only model in this three-phone comparison whose cited specification explicitly presents four telephoto positions, including a 10x position.
For a photographer who frequently frames distant subjects around 10x, that documented position is a meaningful reason to consider the S24 Ultra. It does not automatically make every 10x photograph sharper than a newer phone’s processed 10x mode; the labels describe the camera system and modes, while actual results vary with light, movement and processing.
When the older model makes sense
- You can buy it at a substantial, verified discount.
- You prefer a documented 10x telephoto position and do not need the newest generation.
- Your subjects are usually static or well lit, allowing careful composition at longer reach.
As with the newer models, verify the exact regional version, storage, warranty and remaining support period. “Discounted” is a buying condition, not a permanent price claim.
Which phone has true optical zoom?
All three Ultra phones have Samsung-listed native optical telephoto positions, but the labels differ by model. The S26 Ultra lists 3x and 5x optical telephoto cameras. The S25 Ultra lists 3x and 5x optical zoom. The S24 Ultra lists 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x quad-telephoto positions.
Do not call every number on the camera zoom slider “optical.” On the S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra, 2x and 10x are specifically labeled optical-quality, which indicates computational processing and sensor cropping in addition to the lens system. The 100x setting is digital or Space Zoom. A precise description protects you from assuming that a larger number means a physically longer lens.

Is 100x Space Zoom usable?
It can be useful as an exploratory or documentation mode, but it is not a dependable substitute for a long optical lens. At 100x, tiny hand movements are magnified, atmospheric haze becomes more apparent and the phone has less original image detail from which to construct the final frame.
Conditions that improve extreme zoom
- Bright light: More light allows a faster shutter speed and gives processing cleaner source data.
- A stationary subject: Buildings, signs and distant landscape features are easier than moving people or animals.
- Physical support: Rest the phone on a solid surface or use a tripod-compatible support to reduce framing drift.
- Shorter capture delay: Compose first, wait for the view to settle, then press the shutter gently.
- Atmospheric clarity: Heat shimmer, mist and haze can destroy distant detail before the camera records it.
When to stop increasing magnification
If lettering, edges or textures look smeared in the preview, step back to a lower zoom position and crop later. A smaller, sharper image is often more informative than a larger frame built from unstable or ambiguous detail. Use 100x for reach when the alternative is no photograph, not as a guarantee of publication-quality detail.

How to choose the right model for your subject
Portraits and people at a distance
Start near the 3x native position on the S26 Ultra or S25 Ultra, or choose the corresponding telephoto framing on the S24 Ultra. This usually keeps a person large enough in the frame without forcing you to stand extremely close. For a performer or speaker on a stage, move toward the longer native position when the subject remains too small.
Wildlife and sports
Reach and shutter timing matter more than the maximum number printed on the box. Use a native telephoto position first, keep the subject in a predictable area of the frame and avoid jumping directly to 100x while the subject is moving. A lower magnification that preserves recognizable feathers, facial features or ball position is preferable to an unstable extreme crop.

Telephoto framing is useful for isolating balconies, statues, signs and details high on a building. The S24 Ultra’s listed 10x position may appeal if that framing matches your travel style; the S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra provide a documented 10x optical-quality mode for a similar compositional need.
Moon and very distant objects
Extreme zoom can make a distant object easier to frame, but atmospheric conditions and motion remain limiting factors. Stabilize the phone, tap the subject to focus, and compare a shorter native or optical-quality setting before committing to 100x. The maximum mode is digital, so do not infer scientific or fine-surface detail from a single enlarged frame.
A practical zoom-photography workflow
- Identify the distance and movement. Decide whether the subject is nearby, across a room, on a stage or far beyond comfortable walking distance. Note whether it is moving.
- Begin at a native telephoto position. On the S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra, try 3x or 5x. On the S24 Ultra, choose among its listed telephoto positions based on framing.
- Use an intermediate mode only when needed. If the subject falls between native positions, try the documented 2x or 10x optical-quality setting on the S26 Ultra or S25 Ultra.
- Stabilize before capture. Brace your hands, lean against a fixed object or use a support. Recheck the frame after the phone settles.
- Check focus and motion. Tap the subject and watch for movement. If the subject is moving, reduce magnification until you can keep it framed.
- Capture several frames. Small movements and timing differences matter at telephoto distances. Review at full size rather than trusting only the thumbnail.
- Reserve 100x for exceptional reach. Try it when lower settings cannot show the subject adequately, then compare the result with a shorter, cleaner frame.
- Crop deliberately after capture. If the 100x image is soft, a smaller crop from a sharper native-telephoto photograph may communicate more detail.
Low light, stabilization and autofocus: what is and is not documented
The cited Samsung material establishes zoom positions, but it does not provide comparable aperture values, stabilization specifications, autofocus behavior, low-light test results or measured image quality for the three phones. You should therefore avoid choosing among them solely on an assumed night-zoom advantage.
In dark scenes, use the shortest zoom that still gives the composition you need, brace the phone and avoid moving subjects when possible. These are capture practices rather than claims that one model has a documented advantage. For a buying decision that depends on night sports, concerts or wildlife at dusk, look for current independent testing of the exact regional model and software version.

Do not treat a low S24 Ultra price or a discounted S25 Ultra price as a permanent market value. Confirm the offer at checkout and compare like-for-like storage and warranty conditions.
Common buying mistakes
Buying on the 100x number alone
The maximum figure describes digital or Space Zoom reach, not a 100x optical lens. If most of your photographs need clean detail, prioritize the dedicated telephoto positions and your ability to stabilize the phone.
Calling optical-quality modes optical lenses
Samsung’s 2x and 10x optical-quality labels on the S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra describe processed output. They should not be counted as extra physical telephoto cameras.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAssuming an older 10x label guarantees better images
The S24 Ultra’s listed 10x telephoto position is a notable hardware distinction, but the specification does not establish a universal sharpness advantage over newer computational modes. Compare independent samples made under conditions similar to your own use.
Ignoring regional configuration
Storage, price, warranty and availability can differ by market. Confirm the exact SKU instead of relying on a headline from another country.
Final buying decision
Buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra for the newest Samsung zoom system: dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras, 2x and 10x optical-quality modes and up to 100x digital zoom.
Buy the Galaxy S25 Ultra if its verified price is lower and you want a previous-generation phone with the same documented 3x/5x optical and 2x/10x optical-quality pattern.
Buy the Galaxy S24 Ultra when the discount is compelling or its listed 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x quad-telephoto positions fit your shooting style. In every case, judge 100x as an occasional digital tool, not as a replacement for native optical reach.
