1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStart with the preset that matches your hardware, then tune the expensive settings in the places where you actually play. For a low-end computer, use Minimum or Low, shorten draw distance, disable shadows and post-processing, and reduce render scaling only when necessary. A mid-range system is usually best served by Mid with 100% native scaling and one-at-a-time adjustments. A high-end PC can begin at High or Ultra, but long draw distance, advanced shadows, reflections and volumetric effects still need a sensible frame-rate cap.
RuneScape’s NXT client includes Minimum, Low, Mid, High, Ultra and Ultra+ presets. Changing an individual option switches the client to Custom, which is useful when you want to keep visual quality in one area while removing a particular performance bottleneck.

Quick recommendations by PC tier
Use this table as a starting point rather than a promise of a particular frame rate. RuneScape areas vary substantially: a quiet skilling location can run smoothly while a crowded hub, a large boss encounter or a recently reworked region exposes limits in the CPU, GPU or memory.

| Low-end | Minimum, then Low if stable | Low draw distance; shadows Off or Low; disable ambient occlusion, bloom and volumetric lighting; keep water, lighting, textures, particles and anisotropic filtering Low or Off | A stable cap your computer can sustain, commonly 30 FPS rather than unstable peaks |
| Mid-range | Mid | Medium draw distance; Low or Medium shadows; FXAA or Low anti-aliasing; add ambient occlusion and bloom gradually | Stable frame pacing at native resolution, often a 60-FPS cap when the system can hold it |
| High-end | High or Ultra | Increase draw distance, shadows, reflections, water, volumetric lighting and particles one at a time; use Ultra+ only when sustained performance supports it | A frame cap matched to the display rather than an unlimited, fluctuating maximum |
The official Jagex streaming guidance describes bare-minimum hardware as an experience that will not be smooth and recommends keeping graphics settings low while streaming at 720p and 30 FPS. That advice is a useful floor for an older PC, not a benchmark for every computer that can launch the client.

What the NXT presets actually do
The presets are collections of values, not fixed performance guarantees. Minimum and Low remove or reduce the effects that consume the most GPU time. Mid restores a balanced set of detail. High, Ultra and Ultra+ extend viewing distance and increase lighting, shadow, surface and post-processing quality. If you alter one value after selecting a preset, NXT labels the configuration Custom.
Minimum and Low
Choose Minimum when the client stutters, the image takes a long time to update as you move, or the computer becomes hot and loud. Low is appropriate when Minimum is stable but looks unnecessarily coarse. Do not raise several demanding options at once; a single change makes it possible to identify the setting that causes a hitch.
Mid
Mid is the sensible baseline for a general-purpose gaming PC that is neither very old nor equipped for maximum visual quality. It normally preserves readable textures and reasonable view distance while avoiding the full cost of advanced shadows, reflections and volumetric effects.
High, Ultra and Ultra+
High and Ultra are quality-first starting points for a modern gaming PC. Ultra+ is not automatically better for every monitor: the extra work is worthwhile only if your display resolution and desired frame target leave enough GPU headroom. If the frame rate falls whenever you enter a busy area, moving from Ultra+ to Ultra or High is usually more effective than lowering unrelated options.
Settings with the largest performance impact
The following controls have the clearest documented cost. The exact impact depends on your resolution, graphics hardware, driver and the RuneScape area being rendered.
Draw distance
Draw distance determines how far the client keeps scenery and objects visible. Longer distances increase the amount of geometry and scene data that must be processed, and they can also raise CPU work in large areas. Set Low on an entry-level computer, Medium on a mid-range system and High or Ultra only after checking a crowded location. If movement through a city produces traversal stutter, reduce this before sacrificing texture quality.

Shadow quality
Shadows require additional rendering passes. They are often one of the fastest ways to recover headroom, particularly in areas with many buildings, trees or characters. Use Off or Low on a low-end PC, Low or Medium on a balanced system, and High or Ultra on a high-end PC only if frame pacing remains even. Advanced shadow options can still reduce performance on a powerful machine.
Anti-aliasing
Anti-aliasing smooths jagged edges. Disable it first when every frame matters. FXAA is a relatively light compromise if the unfiltered image looks too harsh; higher-quality modes such as MSAA can consume more GPU resources. Select the lightest mode that makes edges acceptable at your monitor’s native resolution.
Reflections and water detail
Reflections and detailed water add work to surfaces that would otherwise be inexpensive to draw. Keep water detail Low on a weak GPU. Raise it only after testing a location with rivers, coastlines or large reflective surfaces, because a quiet interior does not reveal this cost.
Ambient occlusion
Ambient occlusion adds contact shading where surfaces meet, improving depth around walls, objects and characters. It is a visual enhancement rather than a requirement for readable play. Disable it on low-end hardware; Low or Medium is a reasonable mid-range experiment; High settings belong on a system with spare GPU capacity.
Bloom
Bloom creates a glow around bright sources. It can make magical effects and lights look softer, but it does not improve visibility of game-critical geometry. Turn it Off when reducing post-processing overhead, then re-enable it only if the visual change matters to you.

Particle quality
Particles affect spell effects, smoke, sparks and other transient visuals. High particle counts can become noticeable during combat or in crowded encounters. Low or Medium is safer for a mid-range machine; high values should be tested where you expect the most effects, not just in an empty field.
Anisotropic filtering
Anisotropic filtering keeps textures clearer when viewed at an angle, such as roads or floors stretching into the distance. It usually improves image quality more subtly than shadows or draw distance. Keep it Low or Off on a constrained GPU and increase it later if performance data shows room.
Textures and lighting detail
Texture quality affects memory use and the sharpness of surfaces. Lower textures when the system has limited graphics memory or when loading new areas causes hitching. Lighting detail changes the complexity of illumination and should be kept Low on a very weak machine. On a mid-range computer, enable compressed or higher-quality textures if memory allows and then check area transitions.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteGame render scaling
Render scaling changes the internal resolution before the image is presented at the display resolution. At 100%, the client renders at native scale. Lower values can substantially reduce GPU work, but the image becomes softer. Begin at 80–100% on a low-end PC and reduce it only if other changes do not stop stutter. Keep 100% on a mid-range system at native resolution. Values above 100% can improve sharpness on a high-end GPU, but they multiply rendering work and are rarely the first upgrade to make.
Low-end PC: stability-first setup
Use this sequence on an older laptop, integrated graphics system or computer that struggles in towns and combat. Apply the changes in order and test after each group so you know which adjustment helped.
- Select Minimum. Open the NXT client’s Graphics settings and choose the Minimum preset. Play for several minutes in your busiest regular location.
- Try Low only after Minimum is stable. If frame pacing is even and area transitions do not hitch, switch to Low. Return to Minimum if the change causes repeated stutters.
- Set draw distance to Low. This reduces the amount of distant scenery and geometry the client must process.
- Disable shadows. If Off looks unacceptable, use Low; do not jump directly to advanced shadows on an entry-level machine.
- Turn off post-processing. Disable ambient occlusion, bloom and volumetric lighting.
- Reduce surface and effect detail. Set water detail, lighting detail, textures, particles and anisotropic filtering to Low or Off. Disable ground decoration and tree-canopy effects where those controls are available.
- Set anti-aliasing to Off. Try FXAA only if the jagged edges are more distracting than the small performance cost.
- Start render scaling at 80–100%. Use 100% if possible. Lower the scale gradually when crowded locations still stutter; accept the softer image as a deliberate trade-off rather than lowering every setting blindly.
- Cap foreground FPS. Choose a value the computer can maintain consistently. A lower, steady cap is preferable to a high cap that repeatedly falls and produces uneven input and camera motion.
- Retest the places you actually play. Check a busy bank, a crowded city, a combat area and an outdoor region. Keep the highest setting that remains stable in all of them.
For extremely limited hardware, Jagex’s streaming guidance recommends 720p at 30 FPS while keeping graphics low. That recommendation describes a bare-minimum tier and should not be interpreted as a claim that every low-end computer will deliver a smooth 30 FPS in every RuneScape area.

Mid-range PC: balanced quality and frame pacing
Mid-range systems benefit from restraint. Begin with Mid rather than immediately selecting High, because native resolution and consistent frame pacing usually look better than a fluctuating frame rate with maximum effects.

- Select Mid and keep render scaling at 100%. Native scaling preserves text and interface clarity.
- Set draw distance to Medium. Move toward High only after testing a busy hub and a large outdoor area.
- Use Low or Medium shadows. Raise shadows only when the frame-time graph or your own camera motion remains smooth.
- Choose FXAA or Low anti-aliasing. Compare the image at your normal viewing distance; a stronger mode is not useful if it causes traversal hitches.
- Add ambient occlusion and bloom gradually. Enable one, test, then enable the other. Turn either back down if the frame rate dips during combat or crowded scenes.
- Enable compressed or higher-quality textures if memory allows. If loading a new area causes pauses, return to lower textures before reducing render scaling.
- Leave water, particles, volumetric lighting and anisotropic filtering at moderate values initially. Raise one option at a time and keep the change only when it improves the picture without introducing stutter.
- Set a realistic foreground cap. Match the cap to what the PC can hold in the busiest places, not the peak reported in an empty location.
This one-setting-at-a-time method is an editorial tuning strategy based on the documented preset ladder and the relative cost of the effects. It gives you a repeatable way to find a personal balance instead of assuming that the Mid preset is optimal for every monitor and game area.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.High-end PC: quality without wasted headroom
A modern discrete GPU and fast processor can start at High or Ultra, but high-end hardware does not make every option free. RuneScape still has scenes where long visibility, advanced shadows and reflections increase frame time.
- Select High or Ultra. Use Ultra+ only when the monitor resolution and sustained frame-rate goal justify its additional work.
- Set draw distance to High or Ultra. Visit a crowded hub and a reworked region before deciding that the longest distance is sustainable.
- Raise shadows and reflections together only after a baseline test. If the frame rate falls, lower shadows first because they are often the more direct cost.
- Choose anti-aliasing by image quality. FXAA is a light option; MSAA can provide a cleaner image when the GPU has headroom. Test at the resolution you actually use.
- Increase water detail, lighting, ambient occlusion, bloom, particles, anisotropic filtering and volumetric lighting one at a time. This makes it clear which effect affects a particular scene.
- Keep render scaling at 100% unless there is a reason to change it. Go above native scale only when the display and GPU benefit from supersampling; otherwise it adds load without solving a visible problem.
- Cap the foreground frame rate to the display. A stable cap matched to a 60 Hz, 120 Hz or higher-refresh monitor generally feels better than an unlimited counter that swings widely.
High, Ultra and Ultra+ should therefore be treated as starting profiles. The correct choice is the highest one that remains smooth in your own busiest play locations, not automatically the label with the most detail.
How to test settings so the result is meaningful
RuneScape does not have one universal performance number. Use a short, repeatable test rather than judging from the login screen or a quiet room.
- Pick representative locations. Include your usual bank or city, an outdoor area with long sight lines, a combat encounter with effects and a location where you previously noticed stutter.
- Change one expensive option. Draw distance, shadows, render scaling and volumetric lighting are especially useful first tests. Avoid changing five controls at once.
- Repeat the same movement. Walk or rotate the camera through the same route for several minutes. Traversal stutter may appear only while new scenery streams in.
- Watch frame pacing, not only the average. A high average with frequent drops feels worse than a lower cap that remains even.
- Check heat and power behavior. If performance declines after the computer warms up, a lower cap or reduced effect level may provide a better sustained result than a brief peak.
- Record the working profile. Once the settings are stable, note the preset and the few custom changes so you can restore them after a driver update or client reset.
Troubleshooting common performance problems
The game is smooth in a quiet area but stutters in cities
Lower draw distance first, then shadows and ground or tree-canopy effects. Busy areas require more scene and character processing than an empty field, so a profile that looks fine in isolation may still fail where you spend time.
Best Value
The image is blurry after improving performance
Check render scaling. Restore 100% if the GPU can sustain it, or raise the scale in small increments until text and edges are acceptable. If the computer cannot hold the desired frame cap at native scale, keep the lower scale and compensate with lighter post-processing rather than re-enabling every expensive effect.
Combat effects cause sudden drops
Reduce particle quality, volumetric lighting, bloom and ambient occlusion. Test the change during the same type of encounter; an interior training area will not reveal the cost of a large outdoor fight.
New areas pause while loading
Lower textures and lighting detail if memory pressure appears during transitions. Also test a shorter draw distance. Do not assume that lowering anti-aliasing will fix a loading hitch, because anti-aliasing primarily changes edge smoothing rather than asset streaming.
Recommended Free Tools
The frame counter is high but motion feels uneven
Set a foreground FPS cap below the unstable peak and match it to the monitor’s refresh behavior. Consistency matters more than a maximum number that the computer can hold only in simple scenes.
Hardware requirements: what the published examples mean
The Steam listing gives Intel Core i3-6100 or any AMD Ryzen processor as CPU examples, and lists graphics examples including GeForce GTX 600-series hardware, Intel UHD Graphics 610 and AMD Radeon R7 260. These are requirement examples for compatibility; they are not a promise of 60-FPS performance at High, Ultra or Ultra+.
Performance depends on the exact processor, integrated or discrete GPU, available memory, display resolution, operating conditions and the RuneScape area being rendered. Treat those examples as a sign that the client can target a broad range of computers, then use the tiered profiles and location-based testing to find the limit of your particular system.
Choosing between image quality and a stable cap
There is no single “best” setting independent of your display and priorities. If you play on a 60 Hz monitor, a stable 60-FPS cap is a useful quality target when the computer can sustain it. If your system fluctuates between 35 and 60, a stable lower cap may feel better. On a high-refresh display, use a higher cap only when it remains consistent in busy locations; otherwise reduce expensive effects before increasing render scaling.
Use the preset as the broad starting point, then spend your adjustment budget on the options you notice. A player who values distant scenery can keep draw distance higher and lower bloom or particles. Someone sensitive to jagged edges can keep FXAA while disabling shadows. Someone on integrated graphics may prefer native resolution with Low effects rather than a sharper preset that repeatedly stutters. The Custom label simply indicates that you have made those deliberate trade-offs.
