None is a direct mechanical stand-in for the new game.
What games are like Dawn of War?
“Like” can mean the Warhammer 40,000 universe, large battles with base-building, squad tactics, a substantial campaign, or a classic resource-and-economy loop. These games line up with different parts of that mix, so choose by the feature you want rather than expecting another title to reproduce everything Dawn of War IV is set to offer.

Deep Silver’s FAQ describes Dawn of War IV as “a real time strategy (RTS) game set within the Warhammer 40,000 universe.” The publisher currently lists the game for Windows via Steam, with a December 3, 2026 release date. Its plans may change before launch. Deep Silver’s current game page and FAQ
Warhammer Community’s August 19, 2025 announcement describes a return to the series’ “mass-battle, base-building roots.” It names four factions—Blood Ravens Space Marines, Orks, Necrons and Adeptus Mechanicus—and places the campaign on Kronus. The announcement advertises 70+ missions playable solo or with a friend, as well as Last Stand, Skirmish and multiplayer. The mission count and mode details are announced plans, not confirmation of the final launch build. Warhammer Community’s announcement

Choose the original Dawn of War for the closest setting
If Warhammer 40,000 is the main reason you are looking forward to the new game, the original Dawn of War is the most direct alternative: it is in the same franchise and was built as an RTS interpretation of that universe. Relic notes that its expansions added more gameplay designs, making the series’ earlier entry the best starting point for exploring its established faction and RTS identity.
Choose Dawn of War II for a more tactical pace
Dawn of War II is still part of the same series, but Relic characterizes it around fast action, RPG progression and character customization. Its squad-oriented tactical emphasis is a different fit from Dawn of War IV’s announced return to mass battles and base-building. Its three-player Last Stand mode may also appeal if you want a cooperative-style mode rather than only a traditional campaign or skirmish.

Choose Company of Heroes for squad-led battles
Company of Heroes is a useful adjacent recommendation if what you enjoy is directing squads and responding to battlefield conditions, rather than the Warhammer setting. Relic highlights its squad mechanics and realistic, humanlike behaviour. That comparison is about tactical emphasis; it does not make the games identical or establish details for every current release in the franchise.

Age of Empires IV trades science-fiction factions for a historical setting and makes the economy loop explicit: gather resources, build structures, produce units and defend your settlement. Its official page lists four campaigns and ten included civilizations, making it a strong choice if campaign variety and economy-building matter more than Warhammer lore or squad-focused combat.

Are there RTS games like Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War?
Yes, but the closest match depends on which part of Dawn of War you mean. The existing Dawn of War games are the clearest choices for the setting and franchise; Company of Heroes is a reasonable match for squad tactics; and Age of Empires IV is more relevant if you want to build an economy and progress through campaigns. These are source-based comparisons of the games’ stated focus, not claims that their mechanics or current mode lineups are identical.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Company of Heroes like Dawn of War?
It is related in the broad RTS and squad-tactics sense: Relic says Company of Heroes featured squad mechanics and that Dawn of War II carried gameplay features introduced in Company of Heroes. That makes it a sensible pick for players interested in tactical squad handling, but it is not a Warhammer 40,000 game and is not the closest match for Dawn of War IV’s announced base-building and mass-battle direction.
