Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition is the closest overall match for someone who enjoys Lair of the Leviathan’s party structure, companion interaction, exploration and old-school CRPG identity. Choose Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition when tactical combat matters most, Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition when writing and unusual companions matter most, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous for a larger, rules-heavy modern campaign, and Baldur’s Gate 3 for cinematic production and highly reactive choices.

Lair of the Leviathan is described by GOG as an exploration, turn-based tactical RPG and CRPG inspired by Ultima, Pool of Radiance and the early Baldur’s Gate games. Its official Steam description focuses on leading a party through a large, handcrafted open world with challenging turn-based combat and deep RPG mechanics. The recommendations below use those traits as the baseline rather than treating every game with a medieval setting as a match.

What makes a game “like Lair of the Leviathan”?

The useful comparison is not simply “another fantasy RPG.” The strongest candidates share several specific qualities:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A player-led party rather than a lone hero doing everything.
  • Companions who affect the texture of an adventure through dialogue, personalities, quests or party-building choices.
  • Exploration that rewards leaving the obvious route, with a world that feels authored rather than assembled from interchangeable encounters.
  • Combat that asks you to plan around several characters, positioning, abilities and rules interactions.
  • Enough character-building depth to make party composition a meaningful decision.

Lair of the Leviathan combines those ideas with turn-based tactical combat and a completely handcrafted open world, according to its official Steam community description. GOG’s listing places it in the exploration, turn-based and tactical-RPG categories and names Ultima, Pool of Radiance and early Baldur’s Gate as inspirations.

That combination creates an important divide among the alternatives. The classic Infinity Engine games usually use real-time-with-pause combat rather than turns. Modern successors may provide more reactivity or more elaborate rules, but they can be much larger and more demanding. The best choice depends on which part of the formula you want to preserve.

Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition — the closest classic successor

Why it fits

If you want the safest recommendation, start here. Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition preserves the Forgotten Realms-era party structure, companion interplay, quest density and Infinity Engine lineage that many players associate with classic Baldur’s Gate. GOG lists it in its RPG catalog, making it the most direct classic comparison in this group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Like Lair of the Leviathan, it expects you to think about the party as a unit. The protagonist is important, but the adventure’s texture comes from deciding who travels together, how their abilities complement one another and which companion conversations or quests you make room for. That makes it a better fit than a solo-focused action RPG, even though the combat system is different.

The main difference

Baldur’s Gate II uses real-time-with-pause combat rather than Lair of the Leviathan’s turn-based model. You can pause to issue orders, assess the battlefield and coordinate abilities, but actions continue simultaneously when the game is running. Players coming from a turn-based system should expect to pause frequently instead of waiting for a clean turn boundary.

Its presentation is also unmistakably classic. The game is a reference point for old-school CRPG design, not a modern production benchmark. Interface density, visual readability and encounter pacing reflect that lineage. The reward is breadth: a large body of companion content, quests and party decisions rather than cinematic staging.

Choose it if

  • You want the strongest blend of party management, companions and classic questing.
  • You are comfortable learning real-time-with-pause combat.
  • You want a direct continuation of the classic Baldur’s Gate design tradition rather than a modern reinterpretation.

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition — start with the original formula

Why it fits

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition is the right starting point when you want to experience the foundational version of the formula: form a party, explore a broad fantasy setting, solve quests and grow from vulnerable early adventurers into a capable group. GOG lists it in its RPG catalog.

Its lower-level adventure rhythm makes party decisions feel immediate. Early equipment, spell selection and positioning matter because your characters have fewer tools available. That creates a different kind of tension from a high-level campaign: you are learning the rules while building the habits that later classic CRPGs expect.

The main difference

As with its sequel, combat is real-time-with-pause. It is also a foundational reference rather than a modern presentation benchmark. The game’s value lies in seeing where the party-based CRPG structure comes from, not in expecting contemporary interface conveniences or cinematic direction.

Compared with Lair of the Leviathan, the biggest mechanical adjustment is moving from turn-based tactical planning to simultaneous action managed through pausing. Compared with Baldur’s Gate II, the adventure begins on a smaller, less powerful scale, which can make it a better teaching entry point for readers new to the Infinity Engine style.

Choose it if

  • You want the first game’s exploration and party-formation rhythm.
  • You prefer learning a classic ruleset from its lower-level starting point.
  • You value historical and design continuity more than modern presentation.

Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition — choose combat and party building first

Why it fits

Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition is the combat-forward classic option. GOG’s tactical-RPG catalog lists it, and its strongest match with Lair of the Leviathan is the emphasis on assembling an effective group and taking that group through demanding encounters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Instead of making companion personalities and personal quests the center of the experience, it places more weight on encounter design and party construction. You have greater responsibility for shaping the team’s roles, selecting complementary abilities and deciding how to solve fights. For players who enjoy the tactical side of a party RPG more than extended companion dialogue, that focus can be an advantage.

The main difference

The combat model is real-time-with-pause, so it does not reproduce Lair of the Leviathan’s turn-by-turn structure. Its exploration is also more dungeon- and encounter-focused than the handcrafted open-world emphasis described for Lair of the Leviathan. Expect a sequence of challenges that tests the party rather than a companion-driven road story.

This makes Icewind Dale a poor substitute if your favorite part of Lair of the Leviathan is discovering how companions react to the world. It is an excellent substitute if your favorite part is planning a complete party and refining it for difficult battles.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Choose it if

  • You want the most combat-oriented classic recommendation.
  • You enjoy building the whole party rather than recruiting a cast primarily for their personal stories.
  • You prefer encounter progression and dungeon challenges to dialogue-heavy exploration.

Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition — choose writing and unusual companions

Why it fits

Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition is the story-first choice. GOG lists it in its RPG catalog. It is a strong recommendation for readers who value philosophical themes, dense dialogue and companions with unusual identities more than a high volume of tactical battles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game still uses a party and a classic rules framework, so it belongs in the same broad CRPG family. Its distinctive appeal comes from narrative density. Exploration is often about understanding people, places and ideas as much as it is about clearing encounters. That gives it a different answer to the question “what makes an RPG world interesting?” than the combat-and-open-world emphasis described for Lair of the Leviathan.

The main difference

Combat remains real-time-with-pause, but it is not the reason to choose this game. If you want every session to revolve around tactical positioning and encounter optimization, Icewind Dale is the better classic fit. If you want the party to be a vehicle for ideas, personal histories and difficult conversations, Planescape: Torment is the stronger choice.

Its tone is also more unusual than the conventional fantasy adventure implied by the other recommendations. Go in expecting a narrative-led experience whose companions and themes carry as much weight as equipment or battle routines.

Choose it if

  • You rank writing, philosophical themes and dialogue above combat volume.
  • You want companions who feel narratively distinctive rather than interchangeable party roles.
  • You are happy with a slower, more text-heavy adventure structure.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous — a larger, rules-heavy modern campaign

Why it fits

PC Gamer describes Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous as a modern Baldur’s Gate 2-like experience with companions, quests and extensive reactivity. That combination makes it the strongest choice for readers who want the classic party-CRPG idea expanded into a contemporary, very large campaign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its appeal is breadth. You get a substantial party, a long sequence of quests and many character-building decisions. Companions are not merely combat slots; their stories and reactions help create the campaign’s sense of consequence. For someone who likes the party-led structure of Lair of the Leviathan but wants more systems and more branching outcomes, this is the ambitious option.

The main difference

The learning curve and scope are considerably greater than the compact old-school feel many readers seek. Character creation, progression choices and rules interactions demand more attention. The game’s modern scale can be exciting, but it can also make the experience feel less immediate than a smaller handcrafted adventure.

Combat is built around a modern real-time-with-pause ruleset rather than the turn-based system identified in the official description of Lair of the Leviathan. Treat it as a choice for depth and campaign scale, not as a one-to-one mechanical replacement.

Choose it if

  • You want the most elaborate character-building and rules experimentation in this list.
  • You value companion quests and extensive reactivity.
  • You are willing to learn a demanding system and commit to a large campaign.

Baldur’s Gate 3 — modern production and reactivity

Why it fits

PC Gamer describes Baldur’s Gate 3 as combining influences from Ultima, Baldur’s Gate, Planescape: Torment and Divinity while delivering a modern, highly produced experience. It is the clearest recommendation when you want turn-based combat, strong party personalities, broad choice consequences and cinematic presentation in one package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes it unusually close to Lair of the Leviathan on combat format. Both put turn-based decision-making at the center rather than asking you to manage simultaneous actions through pausing. It also shares the broader party-CRPG concern with exploration, companions and consequences, although it expresses those ideas through a much more systemic and polished production.

The main difference

Baldur’s Gate 3 is not a direct low-budget retro analogue. Its scale, presentation and reactivity are far more contemporary. The game is designed to make choices visible, produce different outcomes and support a wide variety of solutions. That is ideal if you want cinematic feedback and modern accessibility, but it may be less appealing if the attraction of Lair of the Leviathan is specifically its restrained, handcrafted old-school identity.

Choose it for the modern interpretation of the party CRPG, not because it reproduces every limitation or texture of a classic game. It is the high-production answer to the same broad desire for exploration, companions and meaningful decisions.

Choose it if

  • You specifically want turn-based combat in a modern party RPG.
  • You value cinematic presentation and visible consequences for choices.
  • You want a contemporary production influenced by several classic CRPG traditions.

How to choose based on the part of Lair of the Leviathan you enjoy most

If turn-based combat is non-negotiable

Start with Baldur’s Gate 3. It is the only recommendation here that combines a turn-based model with the modern party, companion and reactivity features highlighted by PC Gamer. The classic Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale and Planescape games are all real-time-with-pause experiences, so they require a genuine change in how you read a battle.

If classic party interaction matters most

Pick Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition. It is the most balanced continuation of the classic party-CRPG formula and the safest bridge from Lair of the Leviathan to the Infinity Engine tradition.

If tactical battles matter more than companion stories

Choose Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition. Its combat-forward identity makes party composition and encounter execution the central activity.

If dialogue and themes matter more than combat

Choose Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition. Its unusual companions and philosophical writing make it the most narrative-dense classic option.

If you want maximum rules depth

Choose Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous. It offers the largest rules commitment and a modern campaign with companions, quests and extensive reactivity, but it is also the least compact recommendation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want a first step into classic CRPGs

Choose Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. It establishes the original exploration and party-building rhythm at a lower starting power level, making the design easier to understand before moving to larger successors.

Adjusting from turn-based combat to real-time-with-pause

Four of the classic recommendations use real-time-with-pause. The transition is manageable if you treat pausing as part of the combat loop rather than as an emergency button.

  1. Pause before issuing a full set of orders. Read enemy positions and assign each party member a role.
  2. Use short unpaused intervals. Let actions begin, then pause again when the battlefield changes.
  3. Think in priorities rather than turns. Protect vulnerable characters, interrupt dangerous enemies and keep the party’s formation coherent.
  4. Expect imperfect execution. Simultaneous action means that movement, timing and interruptions matter differently than they do in a strict turn order.
  5. Save before unfamiliar encounters. Classic systems often communicate their rules through difficult fights rather than extensive tutorials.

If that rhythm sounds like the part you want to avoid, select Baldur’s Gate 3 instead. Its turn-based model is the closest mechanical match to the combat format described for Lair of the Leviathan.

Where to find the classic comparisons

GOG’s RPG catalog lists Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition, Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition; its tactical-RPG catalog lists Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition. The official Lair of the Leviathan community and store presence is on Steam. Store listings, regional availability and edition details can change, so check the current page for your region before purchasing.

Final recommendation

For one answer, choose Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition. It best preserves the party management, companion interplay, quest breadth and classic CRPG lineage that connect the two games, even though its real-time-with-pause combat differs from Lair of the Leviathan’s turn-based battles.

Use Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition as the foundational starting point, Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition for combat-first play, Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition for story-first play, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous for rules-heavy modern depth and Baldur’s Gate 3 for the most polished turn-based and reactive experience.
