If you want another RPG after Baldur’s Gate 3, start with Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition for the closest Larian-made tactical-RPG follow-up. Choose Dragon Age: The Veilguard if companion romance is the priority, or Mass Effect Legendary Edition for a character-driven squad story in a science-fiction setting. None is a one-to-one replacement: the best pick depends on which part of Baldur’s Gate 3 you most want to keep.

Which RPG should you play after Baldur’s Gate 3?

Your priority Try What changes
Tactical party RPG closest to Larian’s lineage Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition Separate world and characters; a design neighbor, not a sequel.
Fantasy companions and romance Dragon Age: The Veilguard Romance is a defined relationship system; the cited guide does not establish BG3-like combat or campaign structure.
Classic BioWare fantasy party Dragon Age: Origins An older RPG with combat that is not turn-based.
Open-world fantasy choices Dragon Age: Inquisition Action-RPG combat and open-world structure rather than turn-based battles.
Long-form squad relationships in sci-fi Mass Effect Legendary Edition A Commander Shepard trilogy collection, not a fantasy tactical RPG.
Deep, customizable CRPG systems Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous Offers turn-based or real-time combat, with a dense CRPG approach.

For the closest Larian-style follow-up: Divinity: Original Sin 2

Larian made Divinity: Original Sin 2 before Baldur’s Gate 3, making it the clearest choice if what you want is another party-focused RPG from the same studio. GameSpot also identifies it as a particularly close follow-up. Its setting, lore, and cast are separate from Baldur’s Gate, so approach it as a related design sensibility rather than a continuation of BG3’s story. Larian’s official site identifies the studio’s earlier game, and GameSpot’s comparison discusses its similarities.

This is the most natural pick when you want to stay with a party-based fantasy RPG and are willing to meet a different world and cast. The material cited here does not establish that it matches BG3’s romance breadth, so choose it for the Larian connection and RPG lineage, not as a guaranteed substitute for every companion arc.

For companion romance in a fantasy party: Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the most direct option here if romanceable companions are central to your next game. EA’s official romance guide says all seven companions can be romance partners. Relationships develop through dialogue, quests, companion support, and gifts, and the player eventually commits to one partner. EA describes the appeal this way: “Romances offer deeper connections, unlock dialogue, and more intimate insights into your companions.”

#1 Best Overall
Baldur's Gate 3 - For Playstation 5 (Japan Import) (Multi Language)
  • Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
  • Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
  • Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
  • Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
  • Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!

That makes it a strong fit for relationship-focused play, but the romance guide alone does not establish that its combat or campaign structure resembles Baldur’s Gate 3. Think of it as a companion-and-romance recommendation first, not a promise of the same tactical experience.

For an older BioWare fantasy party: Dragon Age: Origins

Dragon Age: Origins is worth considering if you want a fantasy campaign built around gathering allies and facing a large-scale threat. BioWare’s Dragon Age series page describes that core premise. It is an older entry, and the cited comparison characterizes its combat as not turn-based, so it will not reproduce BG3’s battle format.

Baldur's Gate 3 Deluxe Edition PC Video Game, Stickers & Soundtrack
  • Immersive RPG Experience: Dive into the highly-anticipated Baldur's Gate 3, a captivating role-playing game set in the iconic Dungeons & Dragons universe.
  • Deluxe Edition: This premium edition includes the base game, exclusive stickers, and an official soundtrack to enhance your adventure.
  • Epic Storytelling: Embark on an epic journey filled with complex narratives, challenging quests, and memorable characters.
  • Tactical Combat: Engage in strategic, turn-based battles that require careful planning and execution of your party's abilities.
  • Customizable Characters: Create and customize your own unique heroes, shaping their appearances, abilities, and personalities to fit your playstyle.

Its appeal in this shortlist is the party-centered fantasy premise rather than a claim that its systems match a newer RPG. Pick it when an older BioWare adventure is welcome and you are looking for companions within a larger campaign.

For open-world fantasy choices: Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age: Inquisition suits players who want consequential decisions and character interactions in a broader world. BioWare describes it as an expansive, story-driven open-world RPG with complex characters and difficult decisions that shape the experience. Its structure is an action RPG with an open world, not a turn-based BG3-style campaign. See BioWare’s Dragon Age series page for its official framing.

Rank #3
Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition - PlayStation 4
  • Contains Enhanced Editions of Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, & Siege of Dragonspear
  • Baldur's Gate - Since its original release in 1998, Baldur's Gate has set the standard for Dungeons & Dragons computer roleplaying games.
  • Baldur's Gate II - Continue a journey started in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition or create an entirely new character in this isometric Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game.
  • Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear - Adds a new chapter to the Bhaalspawn saga. The events occurring between Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II are at last revealed in this 25-hour adventure.

Choose it if exploration and choices matter more to you than tactical, turn-based combat. It shares fantasy role-playing and character-driven decisions with BG3, but takes a different route through the world.

For a science-fiction squad story: Mass Effect Legendary Edition

If what you valued most was following a close-knit cast across a substantial story, Mass Effect Legendary Edition offers a change of setting rather than a fantasy substitute. BioWare describes the collection as the single-player base content from all three Commander Shepard games plus more than 40 DLC. It is a science-fiction squad-action series, so the reason to choose it is its ensemble story and relationships—not tactical fantasy combat. Details are on BioWare’s official Legendary Edition page.

For a more systems-heavy CRPG: Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is a strong possibility if you want party companions, character customization, meaningful decisions, romance, and a choice between turn-based and real-time combat. GameSpot’s recommendation coverage highlights those features. Its appeal is the breadth of CRPG systems, which may be a better match for readers who enjoy building a party and navigating a complex role-playing game than for someone seeking BG3’s exact presentation.

How to choose based on what you loved in BG3

  • You want the nearest studio connection: Start with Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition, while expecting a different setting and cast.
  • You want romance to be a central feature: Look at Dragon Age: The Veilguard; its seven companions are romanceable, with eventual commitment to one partner.
  • You want fantasy choices and a larger world: Consider Dragon Age: Inquisition, accepting its open-world action-RPG structure.
  • You want a companion-led story but are open to sci-fi: Try Mass Effect Legendary Edition for its trilogy-spanning squad narrative.
  • You want CRPG customization and combat flexibility: Consider Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and verify the specific platform and edition available to you.
