What counts as an exploration-first RPG?
Exploration games generally give you a substantial world or set of levels to investigate. The Epic Games Store describes them as experiences built around discovering points of interest, characters, weapons, lore and other secrets; some avoid direct action or violence altogether. Role-playing games can fit that category when they send you toward new areas, missions, stories and equipment.

For this list, “exploration over combat” means more than having a large map. The useful questions are:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- How freely can you choose destinations? A world that lets you detour, backtrack and ignore the main path feels different from one that continually pushes you to the next waypoint.
- Is discovery optional or mandatory? Optional ruins, conversations and clues reward curiosity; a sequence of compulsory fights makes wandering feel like a route between battles.
- What replaces combat? Investigation, dialogue, social skills, environmental puzzles and observation can all provide meaningful decisions.
- How often does fighting interrupt exploration? A game can be exploration-led without being combat-free, but the frequency and avoidability of encounters should be clear before you buy.
The four recommendations below cover different interpretations of the idea. Skyrim is the broadest traditional RPG, Disco Elysium is the strongest role-playing and investigation experience with minimal conventional combat, Outer Wilds is a discovery-first adventure rather than an RPG, and No Man’s Sky is a huge exploration/survival game that includes significant combat.

1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition — best all-purpose open-world RPG
Bethesda’s official Steam listing identifies Skyrim Special Edition as both an RPG and an open-world game. That combination makes it the safest recommendation when you want the familiar structure of a role-playing game but would rather spend your time roaming than following a single prescribed route. The Special Edition includes the core game and its add-ons, and the listing describes a world filled with quests, environments, characters, dialogue, armor and weapons. Its release date is 27 October 2016.
Why it suits explorers
You can treat the main quest as one thread among many rather than the purpose of every excursion. Optional quest lines, conversations and places to investigate give a wandering session its own momentum. Character building also supports different reasons to explore: you can develop your character and equipment while deciding which stories or areas deserve attention next.
The official listing’s mention of new quests, environments, characters, dialogue, armor and weapons through Creations is important for explorers who want variety beyond the base content. It indicates that the edition’s appeal is not limited to a single scripted path; additional content expands the kinds of places and activities you can encounter.

The trade-off for combat-averse players
Skyrim remains an action RPG. Combat is a regular part of moving through its world, so “exploration-first” should not be read as “peaceful” or “combat-free.” Even if you choose to ignore the central storyline, hostile encounters can still interrupt a journey. Pick Skyrim when you are comfortable with fighting as the price of admission for a broad, traditional fantasy sandbox.

- You can tolerate frequent action encounters in exchange for freedom of movement.
2. Disco Elysium – The Final Cut — best for investigation and dialogue
Disco Elysium – The Final Cut is the clearest fit when “exploration” means examining people, motives and possibilities instead of clearing combat arenas. ZA/UM’s official storefront description calls it a role-playing game in which you are a detective with a unique skill system and “a whole city block to carve your path across.” It was released on 15 October 2019.
How its exploration works
Your movement through Revachol is inseparable from conversation and investigation. You interrogate characters, pursue a murder, inspect your surroundings and decide which leads deserve attention. The game’s 24 skills shape what you notice and how you respond, so revisiting a person or place can produce a different result when your character’s abilities, clothing or thoughts change.
The official description specifically supports approaches such as intimidation, persuasion, poetry, singing and dancing. Those examples show that progress can come from social and expressive choices rather than a weapon-based solution. Taking a bribe, asking the right question or accepting an unusual line of reasoning can alter your route through the case.

Disco Elysium uses skills, clothing and thoughts as the main ways to develop your detective. That progression changes the checks and dialogue available to you, making character growth feel like a broader set of interpretations rather than simply higher damage numbers. The result is a role-playing loop built around consequences, failed checks and new avenues of inquiry.

- You want the least conventional combat burden among the role-playing choices here.
3. Outer Wilds — best discovery-first adjacent pick
Outer Wilds is not classified as an RPG on its official Steam page; it is listed as an action/adventure game. It belongs on this list because it captures the purest form of exploratory play: you learn how a strange world works by observing it, testing ideas and connecting clues. Its release date is 18 June 2020.
A world solved through knowledge
The premise is an open-world mystery set in a solar system trapped in a time loop. Hidden locations change over time, environmental hazards shape when and how you can reach them, and gadgets help you probe your surroundings, track signals and decipher alien writing. There is no promise of a conventional quest log, loot ladder or character-level system; the main reward is understanding.
This structure makes every observation useful. A passage that appears inaccessible may become understandable after you learn what happens elsewhere, and a signal or piece of writing can turn a seemingly empty location into a meaningful destination. Progress belongs to the player’s knowledge rather than to an avatar becoming numerically stronger.
Why it is not a conventional RPG
If you expect build choices, equipment statistics, party management or a long list of combat abilities, Outer Wilds will not provide that structure. Its challenges are environmental and intellectual, and the satisfaction comes from making connections yourself. Label it an exploration adventure so expectations stay accurate.
Rank #4
Choose Outer Wilds if…
- You define exploration as discovering systems, secrets and history through experimentation.
- You prefer environmental puzzles to grinding levels or collecting gear.
- You want an interconnected mystery in a compact setting rather than a huge map.
- You are comfortable with an adventure game that is adjacent to RPGs, not an RPG itself.
4. No Man’s Sky — conditional option for maximum scale
Hello Games describes No Man’s Sky as “a game about exploration and survival in an infinite procedurally generated galaxy.” Its official description emphasizes visiting planets, cataloguing life, finding artefacts and choosing your own route. That makes it the scale-first option for players who want to decide where to go rather than exhaust a finite, authored map.
What makes it different
Procedural generation changes the nature of discovery. Instead of learning one carefully authored fantasy region or a tightly connected mystery, you travel through a galaxy built around planetary variety and self-directed movement. The appeal is breadth: surveying places, identifying life and deciding which destination to pursue next.
Why combat-averse players should be cautious
The same official page explicitly includes dogfighting and first-person planetary combat. Fighting is therefore part of the game’s identity, not an incidental possibility. You should choose No Man’s Sky only if the promise of enormous exploratory scale outweighs your desire to avoid combat. It is best described as an exploration/survival game with meaningful combat, not as a low-combat RPG.
Choose No Man’s Sky if…
- You want procedural scale and the freedom to pick your own route through space and planets.
- You enjoy cataloguing life, locating artefacts and treating travel itself as the main activity.
- You accept both ship dogfights and first-person planetary battles.
- You are looking for exploration and survival rather than a conventional RPG campaign.
Which game matches your preferred kind of exploration?
| If your priority is… | Pick… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A broad fantasy sandbox with familiar RPG systems | Skyrim Special Edition | It combines an open world, optional quests, dialogue and conventional character and equipment progression. |
| Solving a case through people and choices | Disco Elysium – The Final Cut | Its detective structure, 24 skills and social approaches make dialogue the primary tool. |
| Learning a mystery by testing the environment | Outer Wilds | Its time-loop solar system rewards observation, gadgets and player knowledge rather than levels. |
| Visiting the largest variety of places | No Man’s Sky | Its procedurally generated galaxy supports planetary travel, cataloguing and route choice, but includes substantial combat. |
How to choose without being misled by the “exploration” label
Decide whether you need RPG progression
For leveling, equipment and a character build, Skyrim is the direct match. Disco Elysium offers progression through skills, clothing and thoughts, but its purpose is to change checks and conversations. Outer Wilds is driven primarily by knowledge, and No Man’s Sky is presented here for its travel and survival premise rather than a stated traditional RPG progression system.
Best Value
- The most popular fantasy RPG in history
- Remastered in stunning HD for Xbox One & Playstation 4
- Winner of more than 200 Game of the Year awards
- Includes the full power of all PC mods to consoles
- Also includes all DLC from the original release (Dawnguard, Heathfire, Dragonborn)
Separate “large” from “deep”
No Man’s Sky is the scale choice because its galaxy is procedurally generated. Skyrim offers a large authored world with quests and characters. Outer Wilds is comparatively compact but densely interconnected through its mystery. Disco Elysium focuses on a city district whose depth comes from conversations and investigation rather than geographic sprawl.
Set your combat tolerance honestly
Choose Disco Elysium when conventional fighting is the main thing you want to avoid. Outer Wilds shifts attention to environmental hazards and puzzles. Skyrim still asks you to handle regular action-RPG encounters. No Man’s Sky explicitly includes both ship and planetary combat, making it the weakest fit if you want combat to be rare.
Know what “freedom” means to you
Skyrim’s freedom is the ability to wander an authored fantasy world and select quests. No Man’s Sky offers route freedom across a procedurally generated galaxy. Outer Wilds lets you pursue clues in an interconnected system whose locations and timing matter. Disco Elysium gives you freedom mainly through dialogue, investigation and the consequences of your detective’s choices.

For a first open-world RPG
Begin with Skyrim Special Edition and treat the main quest as optional direction rather than a checklist. Follow a nearby conversation or location when it interests you, then return to broader exploration when it does not. This approach uses the game’s authored content without turning every session into a march between mandatory objectives.
For a no-grinding investigation
Start Disco Elysium by accepting that failed checks and unusual conversations are part of the role-playing experience. Explore the city block, speak with characters and let your skills, clothing and thoughts open different approaches. The game’s design supports solving problems through dialogue, so do not assume that a failed roll means the story has ended.
For a discovery puzzle
Start Outer Wilds with a notebook or digital notes if you enjoy recording clues. Pay attention to signals, alien writing, timing and environmental changes. Because knowledge is the effective progression system, remembering what you learned is more valuable than searching for better equipment.
For a galaxy-scale journey
Start No Man’s Sky only after deciding that exploration and survival justify the combat you will encounter. Set a personal goal such as visiting planets, cataloguing life or locating artefacts, and regard route selection as the core activity. If any ship or planetary fighting is a deal-breaker, select one of the other three games instead.
