1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose Beat Saber if you want a VR game with a documented song editor. Choose osu! if your priority is creating and sharing beatmaps in a free, community-driven PC ecosystem. Choose Crypt of the NecroDancer if you mainly want to play with songs from your own MP3 collection and add modded content; it is a custom-music rhythm roguelike, not a conventional chart-authoring tool.
The important distinction is whether you want to author note charts, share them with other players, or simply make your own music part of the soundtrack. Those are different workflows, and the three games handle them in different ways.

Which game fits the way you want to create?
| Game | Creation or custom-audio model | Input and platform context | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beat Saber | Documented song-map editor with timing, offset, difficulty, jump-speed, spawn-offset and environment controls | Virtual reality; a compatible VR headset is required | Players who want hands-on, three-dimensional chart editing |
| osu! | User-created beatmaps, personal music use and community sharing | Free, online, PC-centered ecosystem | Creators who want to make, publish and discover a large range of charts |
| Crypt of the NecroDancer | Select songs from a personal MP3 collection; full mod support and a built-in mod portal | Available on Nintendo Switch systems and other platforms; Nintendo’s cited product page does not specify a traditional chart editor | Players who want rhythm gameplay around their own soundtrack and modded content |
| Muse Dash | The cited Nintendo catalog lists it as a Switch rhythm title; Nintendo’s cited catalog listing does not establish an editor | Nintendo Switch catalog listing | Switch players seeking a rhythm game rather than a confirmed authoring tool |
This table separates two ideas that are often mixed together. Beat Saber and osu! are the stronger choices when “editor” means making note patterns that line up with a song. Crypt of the NecroDancer is the stronger choice when “custom music” means choosing your own audio while the game supplies its own rhythm-focused systems.

What counts as a built-in music or beatmap editor?
A beatmap editor lets you place or adjust gameplay events against a song’s timeline. Depending on the game, those events may be notes, movement cues, lanes or other actions. The practical questions are how precisely you can align events, how many difficulty or speed parameters you can control, and whether the resulting chart can be shared.

Chart authoring
Chart authoring changes the playable pattern. You are deciding when an action occurs and, in a spatial game, where it appears. Beat Saber’s official editor documentation explicitly identifies timing and chart controls, including song time offset, difficulty, jump speed, spawn offset and the standard environment.
Custom soundtrack playback
Custom soundtrack support changes the audio you hear without necessarily giving you a way to author a matching chart. Crypt of the NecroDancer’s official description says you can select songs from your own MP3 collection. That is useful for personal listening and replay variety, but it should not be mistaken for an editor in which you place a complete set of notes.
Community creation and distribution
A creation system becomes more useful when other players can find and play the result. The official osu! description emphasizes user-created beatmaps, sharing, storyboarding and multiplayer. That makes the surrounding community part of the creation experience, not just an optional extra.
Beat Saber: the clearest VR choice for making song maps
Beat Games identifies Beat Saber as a virtual-reality rhythm game and lists official music packs and original soundtracks. Its editor documentation confirms a built-in workflow for building a song map after you configure the song and gameplay parameters. If your mental picture of an editor is moving beats into a three-dimensional play space while wearing a headset, this is the closest match in this group.

What the documented editor controls do
- Song time offset: shifts the chart’s timing relationship to the audio. This is the first control to consider when the whole map feels consistently early or late.
- Difficulty: identifies the challenge level for the map you are authoring.
- Jump speed: controls how quickly notes travel toward the player, which affects how much reaction time and visual density the chart presents.
- Spawn offset: changes where notes begin their approach, giving you another way to tune readability and timing.
- Standard environment: selects the documented standard play environment in which the map is built.
The documentation names these settings but does not establish a universal recommended value for any of them. Treat them as authoring decisions that depend on the song, the intended difficulty and the way the chart reads in your headset.
A practical Beat Saber authoring sequence
- Confirm the hardware. Beat Saber is a VR game, so you need a compatible headset and the associated VR setup before an editor workflow is possible.
- Prepare the song entry. Use the song and map setup described in Beat Games’ editor documentation rather than assuming that a music file alone creates a playable chart.
- Set the song time offset. If the audio and the first intended action do not line up, correct the global offset before placing many events. A global timing problem is easier to fix before detailed authoring.
- Select difficulty. Decide which challenge level the map represents so that note density and movement choices remain coherent.
- Choose jump speed and spawn offset. These settings determine how the approaching pattern presents itself. Change them deliberately and check the result in the headset.
- Select the standard environment. The editor documentation includes this environment setting as part of the map setup.
- Open the editor and build the map. Place the gameplay events against the song timeline, then play the map to check timing, readability and physical comfort.
This sequence follows the controls that Beat Games documents. Beat Games’ documentation does not provide a universal note count, maximum chart length or required authoring time, so those should not be treated as fixed specifications.
Who should choose Beat Saber?
- Choose it when VR is a feature, not a barrier.
- Choose it when you want control over timing, movement speed and the way notes enter the play space.
- Choose it when you prefer editing a map directly in the same three-dimensional context in which it will be played.
Do not choose it solely because you want to press play on arbitrary songs from a computer folder. The documented workflow is based on authored song maps, while the game’s official site focuses on its VR presentation, music packs and original soundtracks.

Why its ecosystem matters
In osu!, the value of creation is not limited to a private experiment. User-created beatmaps provide a continuous stream of content made by other players, while sharing gives your own work an audience. Storyboarding adds a presentation layer beyond the basic note sequence, and multiplayer gives charts a social use case.
A sensible first-map workflow
- Install and launch the PC game. The official description presents osu! as an online, PC-centered experience, so plan on a computer and an internet connection for the full ecosystem.
- Choose a song you have available. osu! is described as allowing players to use their own music. Keep the audio and the chart project together while you work so timing decisions remain consistent.
- Build the beatmap around the song. Place the gameplay events so they follow the song’s rhythm and structure. The official page establishes user-created beatmaps but does not publish a single required authoring recipe or a universal difficulty scale for every creator.
- Play-test repeatedly. Listen for sections that feel out of time, too sparse or unnecessarily dense. Test the chart as a player rather than judging it only from the editing view.
- Add presentation if you want more than notes. Storyboarding is one of the features named by the official about page, so visual direction can be part of the finished creation.
- Share the result. Sharing is a stated part of osu!’s design. Follow the current in-game or community submission process shown by your installation; osu!’s cited description does not specify a single permanent menu path.
Who should choose osu!?
- Choose it if discovering other people’s charts is as important as authoring your own.
- Choose it if you want to use your own music and publish creations rather than keeping every map local.
- Choose it if you prefer a free online PC ecosystem over a VR-only editor.
The official osu! description does not provide a fixed hardware specification, editor version number or guaranteed acceptance criteria for every shared map. Those details can vary with the current client and community procedures, so use the labels and instructions shown by the active installation.
Crypt of the NecroDancer: custom MP3s and mods instead of traditional chart editing
Klei’s official page says Crypt of the NecroDancer lets players select songs from their own MP3 collection. It also describes full mod support and a built-in mod portal. That makes it a compelling answer to “Which rhythm game can use my music?” but a different answer to “Which game has a conventional beatmap editor?”

The game’s core identity is a rhythm roguelike. Your movement and exploration are integrated with the game’s rhythm systems, while the selected MP3 supplies the soundtrack. Klei’s cited product information does not describe tools for placing a complete custom note chart against every song. Therefore, treat personal MP3 playback as soundtrack customization, not evidence of a general-purpose map editor.

Using the MP3 and mod features
- Keep the desired tracks in your MP3 collection. The official description specifically refers to MP3 files, so do not assume that every other audio format will work.
- Use the game’s song-selection feature. Select a track from the available personal collection when configuring a run.
- Play with the game’s rhythm rules. The selected track changes the soundtrack, while the roguelike’s built-in systems remain the framework for play.
- Browse the built-in mod portal for additional content. Klei documents full mod support and a built-in portal, making mods the route for extending content rather than a traditional chart-authoring workflow.
Who should choose Crypt of the NecroDancer?
- Choose it when your main goal is hearing personal music during rhythm-based exploration.
- Choose it when mod support and a built-in mod portal matter more than publishing hand-authored note patterns.
- Choose it when you want a genre blend: rhythm mechanics inside a roguelike structure.
Do not choose it expecting Beat Saber-style controls for jump speed, spawn offset or environment setup. Those editor controls are documented for Beat Saber, not for Crypt of the NecroDancer’s MP3 feature.
Switch options: what the catalog confirms, and what it does not
Nintendo’s official rhythm-game catalog lists Muse Dash and Crypt of the NecroDancer: Nintendo Switch Edition among Switch rhythm titles. That confirms a platform path for players who want rhythm games on Switch systems. It does not, by itself, establish that either title includes a built-in beatmap editor.
| Question | What is established | What remains unstated |
|---|---|---|
| Is Crypt of the NecroDancer available on Switch? | Nintendo’s catalog lists Crypt of the NecroDancer: Nintendo Switch Edition. | The catalog entry does not document a conventional chart editor. |
| Is Muse Dash available on Switch? | Nintendo’s catalog lists Muse Dash as a Switch rhythm title. | The cited catalog information does not document a built-in beatmap editor. |
| Which listed game has documented editor controls? | Beat Games documents Beat Saber’s song-map editor controls. | No equivalent editor specification is established for the two Switch catalog entries here. |
If Switch ownership is your deciding factor, treat these as rhythm-game choices first. Verify the current product description for any creation tools before buying specifically to author charts.
Choose by the creation job, not by the word “editor”
You want to author precise note patterns in VR
Pick Beat Saber. Its documented controls address global timing, challenge level, note approach and environment, and the headset lets you judge the result in the same spatial context in which it will be played.

You want a free community where charts are made and shared
Pick osu!. Its official description combines user-created beatmaps, own-music support, sharing, storyboarding and multiplayer, which is the broadest creation-and-distribution model in this group.
You want to hear your own MP3s during a rhythm roguelike
Pick Crypt of the NecroDancer. Its personal MP3 selection and mod support answer a custom-soundtrack need without claiming a traditional chart editor.
You need a Switch game first
Start with the Nintendo catalog entries for Muse Dash and Crypt of the NecroDancer: Nintendo Switch Edition, then check the current product details for creation features. The catalog evidence establishes availability, not editor depth.
Timing, difficulty and audio decisions that affect every creator
Fix global timing before local details
If every event feels early or late by roughly the same amount, the problem is probably a global offset rather than dozens of individual placements. Beat Saber’s documented song time offset exists for this kind of adjustment. In osu!, use the timing tools and test process provided by the active client; the official overview confirms beatmap creation but does not specify a single timing-control label.
Separate challenge from technical density
A higher difficulty should communicate a different challenge, not merely a crowded timeline. Beat Saber exposes difficulty as a map setting and also exposes jump speed and spawn offset. Consider those parameters together: changing how quickly notes approach can alter the perceived difficulty even when the underlying sequence stays the same.
Test as a player
Creators see a chart repeatedly and learn its surprises. Players do not. Replaying your own map from the beginning and from difficult sections can reveal timing drift, unreadable approaches or transitions that only make sense to the author. This principle applies whether you are editing in VR, building a shared osu! beatmap or selecting a personal soundtrack for a Crypt run.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing a custom soundtrack with a custom chart. Crypt of the NecroDancer’s MP3 feature changes the music you hear; it is not documented as a general note-placement editor.
- Buying a VR game without VR hardware. Beat Saber requires a compatible headset. A monitor and keyboard alone do not satisfy that input requirement.
- Ignoring global offset. Correct a consistent early-or-late feel before spending time on individual events.
- Assuming every platform has the same tools. The Switch catalog confirms listed titles, but it does not establish editor parity or editor availability.
- Expecting a fixed community workflow forever. osu! is an online ecosystem. Use the current client’s labels and sharing instructions rather than relying on an old menu description.
- Overlooking the audience for a map. A private experiment, a shareable osu! beatmap and a VR chart intended for other players have different testing and presentation needs.
Bottom line
Beat Saber is the direct recommendation for a documented VR song editor. osu! is the better choice for free, community-created and shareable beatmaps with personal-music support. Crypt of the NecroDancer is the custom-MP3 option, strengthened by full mod support but distinct from traditional chart authoring. On Switch, Muse Dash and Crypt of the NecroDancer are listed rhythm titles, while editor capabilities are not established by the cited catalog information.
