Best Rhythm-Action Games to Play After a Beat-Based Combat Game

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Start with Metal: Hellsinger if you want to keep aiming and shooting on the beat. Choose Hi-Fi Rush for third-person melee combos and a story-led action adventure. If you are ready for the rhythm to control every move rather than merely improve attacks, try Crypt of the NecroDancer or its Zelda-themed counterpart, Cadence of Hyrule. Thumper is the pick for an abstract, high-intensity timing test, while Soundfall combines music-driven combat with a looter-shooter dungeon loop.

These are not interchangeable clones. Their cameras, combat systems, consequences for missing a beat and overall structure differ substantially. The guide below matches each game to the kind of satisfaction you want next, using official descriptions rather than a hands-on ranking.

How to choose your next rhythm-action game

A beat-based combat game can make “rhythm” mean several different things. In one title, the beat rewards an accurate shot; in another, it dictates whether your character may move at all. Before choosing, decide which part of your finished game you are trying to preserve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Camera and combat: Do you want a first-person shooter, a third-person character-action game or a top-down dungeon crawler?
  • What the beat controls: Is timing a bonus that increases damage and combos, or is every movement and defensive action tied to the pulse?
  • Game structure: Would you rather follow a relatively linear adventure, repeat changing dungeon runs or concentrate on an abstract track challenge?
  • Practical fit: Which device and regional store do you use? A game being listed by a platform editorial page or linked from a developer site does not guarantee a current listing in your country.

The comparison table is a fast way to narrow the field. The sections that follow explain the meaningful differences so you can make a choice without treating “rhythm game” as a single genre.

At-a-glance comparison

Game Camera and primary action How the beat matters Structure Best match for
Metal: Hellsinger First-person shooting Shooting on beat enhances attacks and intensifies the music and destruction Rhythm-action shooter Players who want to keep aiming, firing and chasing timing scores
Hi-Fi Rush Third-person melee action Keeping time enables devastating blows and combos; abilities are amplified by the music-player beat Story-driven action adventure Players moving from beat combat to character-action combos
Crypt of the NecroDancer Dungeon movement and fighting Movement and attacks happen on the beat Randomly generated dungeons Players who want the rhythm to govern navigation as well as combat
Cadence of Hyrule Beat-led dungeon exploration and fighting Each beat offers a chance to move, attack or defend Crypt of the NecroDancer-style play in a Zelda setting Players who want rhythmic dungeon rules with a familiar Nintendo adventure frame
Thumper Abstract track-based action; playable in 2D or VR Timing, speed and physical reactions are the challenge itself Intense, mostly abstract rhythm-action tracks Players seeking a concentrated and punishing rhythm test
Soundfall Music-driven dungeon-crawler shooting Fighting to the beat makes the player deadlier Looter-shooter dungeon crawler Players who want loot-oriented runs alongside rhythm combat

The descriptions and distinctions in this table come from the official PlayStation, Nintendo and developer pages linked in the sections below. They are a curated decision guide, not a claim that one title is objectively superior.

Metal: Hellsinger — the closest follow-up for on-beat shooting

What you do

Metal: Hellsinger is described by PlayStation as a heavy-metal rhythm-action shooter. You aim and fire from a first-person viewpoint, with shots made on the beat enhancing attacks and intensifying both the music and the destruction. That keeps the familiar shooter loop—find a target, line up a shot and fire—while making timing part of the damage-and-momentum chase.

Why it fits after a beat-based combat game

This is the most direct choice when the part you miss is the sensation of synchronizing an attack with a track. You are not replacing weapon handling with a turn-based or menu-driven system; you continue to make aiming decisions while listening for the pulse. The beat therefore acts as a performance layer on top of first-person combat rather than restricting every step you take.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it when

  • You want shooting, not melee strings, to be the center of your timing practice.
  • You enjoy improving accuracy and rhythm together, so successful timing has a visible effect on attacks and the intensity of the music.
  • You prefer a combat-focused loop over a character-adventure presentation.

What changes from a melee rhythm game

Players coming from a third-person melee game should expect the camera and spatial problem to change. Instead of reading an enemy’s distance for a strike or combo, you are managing aim in a first-person space while maintaining the beat. That makes it a strong mechanical match for rhythm-shooter fans, but not a like-for-like substitute for a story-heavy melee adventure.

PlayStation’s official description is available in its rhythm-games roundup. Check your regional store for the current edition and platform listing before buying.

Hi-Fi Rush — for beat-synced melee and a story-led adventure

What you do

In Hi-Fi Rush, you control Chai and fight through an evil megacorporation’s headquarters. PlayStation describes keeping time with the beat to deliver devastating blows and combos, with abilities amplified by the beat from the music player. Boss battles have their own sounds and styles, and the game includes post-story extras.

Why it fits

This is the natural handoff for someone whose favorite moments came from pressing an attack at exactly the right instant, then extending that success into a combo. The beat is woven into melee execution rather than presented as a separate rhythm minigame. At the same time, the headquarters setting, named protagonist and boss encounters give the timing practice a conventional action-adventure frame.

Choose it when

  • You want close-range combat and combo expression instead of first-person firearms.
  • You prefer a guided adventure with characters, a setting and boss encounters.
  • You want your timing to amplify abilities while still making ordinary action-game decisions about attacks and encounters.

How it differs from stricter beat-controlled games

The official description emphasizes attacks, combos and amplified abilities. That places the focus on performing combat effectively in time, rather than stating that every movement in the world is locked to a beat. If you want free-form action-adventure movement with rhythm-enhanced melee, this is the better fit; if you want the beat to determine whether you may take a step, look to the dungeon games below.

Crypt of the NecroDancer — when every move must respect the beat

What changes

Nintendo describes Crypt of the NecroDancer as a game in which players move on the beat through randomly generated dungeons while battling enemies. The rhythm is therefore integral to navigation as well as fighting. You are not simply earning a damage bonus for a well-timed strike; the beat is the shared clock for movement and attacks.

Why it is a meaningful step up in rhythm commitment

If your previous game let you walk, reposition or explore freely between timed attacks, this structure will feel fundamentally different. Each beat becomes a decision point: move, attack, or preserve your position. Because the dungeons are randomly generated, the challenge comes from applying that rule to changing layouts and enemy situations rather than memorizing one fixed route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it when

  • You want rhythm to govern the whole dungeon loop, not just improve damage.
  • You enjoy adapting timing decisions to changing rooms and encounters.
  • You are comfortable exchanging real-time free movement for deliberate beat-by-beat positioning.

Who may prefer another option

Players looking for cinematic melee combos or a first-person shooting perspective should start elsewhere. This is a dungeon-navigation game built around a strict rhythmic rule, so its appeal depends on enjoying the constraint itself. It is also the clearest choice in this list when “play on the beat” means literally making movement decisions on each pulse.

Cadence of Hyrule — the same beat-led dungeon idea in a Zelda setting

Core loop

Cadence of Hyrule uses Crypt of the NecroDancer gameplay in a The Legend of Zelda setting. Nintendo explains that every beat of each remixed Zelda tune is an opportunity to move, attack or defend and stay ahead of enemies.

Why choose it over Crypt of the NecroDancer

The deciding factor is not a different rhythm principle; it is the setting and adventure context. If recognizable Zelda characters, locations and musical themes make you more eager to learn beat-led dungeon movement, Cadence of Hyrule provides that frame. You still need to think in discrete rhythmic opportunities, so the game remains a substantial change from an action title where movement is continuous.

Choose it when

  • You want every move, attack and defensive choice tied to a beat.
  • A Zelda-themed world is more appealing than an entirely original dungeon setting.
  • You like learning a strict movement rule through exploration rather than through a linear action stage.

Important expectation

The familiar setting does not turn the game into a conventional Zelda action adventure. The defining interaction remains beat-led movement and combat. Choose it for that rhythmic dungeon structure first, and for the setting second.

See Nintendo’s wording, including the move-attack-defend explanation, in its official music-games article. Nintendo’s page is dated October 27, 2022; use a current regional storefront to verify today’s edition and availability.

Thumper — an intense, abstract rhythm test

What it is

The developer presents Thumper as “rhythm violence,” combining classic rhythm-action, blistering speed and brutal physicality. PlayStation describes controlling a chrome space beetle and surviving intense tracks. The developer site lists options for 2D or VR play.

Why it feels different

Thumper strips away the character-driven adventure and conventional shooter or dungeon framing. The central task is reacting to an intense track with speed and precision as a space beetle in a hellish void. That abstraction makes it useful when you want to concentrate on timing itself rather than learn a new weapon set, party or narrative setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it when

  • You want a focused rhythm-action challenge rather than a broad action-adventure campaign.
  • High speed and physical intensity sound more appealing than dialogue or loot.
  • You are interested in choosing between a standard 2D presentation and VR, subject to the device and edition you can access.

Why it is not a like-for-like replacement

There is no official description here of a conventional character-combat system, shooting loadout or dungeon-crawling loop. Treat it as a different branch of rhythm action: an abstract track challenge that tests reactions and timing. That distinction matters if your reason for seeking a follow-up is specifically to continue a story or build a combat character.

Use the developer’s official Thumper site for its description and links to Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox and Meta storefronts. Those links do not by themselves confirm current stock, regional support or the exact edition available to you.

Soundfall — music-driven dungeon crawling with looter-shooter combat

Core loop

Nintendo describes Soundfall as a fast-paced, music-based dungeon crawler that blends looter-shooter action with rhythm gameplay. Its description says that fighting to the beat makes the player deadlier.

Why it fills a different niche

This is the option for players who want a repeatable dungeon structure and shooting-oriented action, but also want rhythm to influence combat effectiveness. Compared with Metal: Hellsinger, the defining distinction in the available descriptions is the looter-shooter dungeon-crawler format. Compared with Crypt of the NecroDancer, the beat is described as making you deadlier rather than as controlling every movement through a dungeon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it when

  • You want music-based combat inside a dungeon-crawler framework.
  • You enjoy the idea of looter-shooter action as part of your next rhythm game.
  • You prefer a game loop built around repeated dungeon activity rather than an abstract track or a single linear adventure path.

Check current details before purchase

Nintendo’s cited description is on a page dated October 27, 2022. That date is useful context, but it is not a current price or availability statement. Confirm the platform, regional listing and edition in your store before deciding.

A decision guide based on the feeling you want to keep

Use this sequence when you are choosing between the six options:

  1. Start with the action verb. If it is shoot, compare Metal: Hellsinger and Soundfall. If it is strike or combo, start with Hi-Fi Rush. If it is move on a strict pulse, choose Crypt of the NecroDancer or Cadence of Hyrule.
  2. Decide whether timing is a bonus or a rule. Beat-enhanced attacks point toward Metal: Hellsinger, Hi-Fi Rush or Soundfall. Beat-governed movement points toward the two dungeon games.
  3. Pick the structure you will actually replay. A story-led headquarters adventure points to Hi-Fi Rush; randomly generated dungeons point to Crypt of the NecroDancer; a Zelda setting points to Cadence of Hyrule; a looter-shooter dungeon loop points to Soundfall; concentrated track intensity points to Thumper.
  4. Confirm your device and region. Open the current storefront for your hardware, check the edition name and verify that the listing is available where you live. Do not infer current stock or price from an older editorial page.

How to make the transition easier

From beat bonuses to beat rules

If your finished game rewarded attacks made on time, begin by listening for the pulse without trying to optimize every action. In Crypt of the NecroDancer and Cadence of Hyrule, the important adjustment is treating the beat as the schedule for movement as well as offense. Make one deliberate decision per beat, then add complexity once positioning feels natural.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

From melee to shooting

Moving to Metal: Hellsinger or Soundfall changes the hand-eye problem. Keep your attention divided between target selection and the music. The goal is not merely to fire quickly; it is to preserve the timing that the official descriptions identify as enhancing attacks or making you deadlier.

From narrative action to abstraction

Thumper removes the story and character-combat context found in an action adventure. Approach it as a track-performance challenge. If you want a more conventional protagonist, world and boss structure, Hi-Fi Rush is the closer match in this set.

Platforms, editions and what the sources do not establish

Platform availability changes by region and edition. The PlayStation roundup is an official platform editorial page, but its retrieved article date is not stated. Nintendo’s feature is dated October 27, 2022, so its descriptions should not be treated as current price or stock information. The Thumper developer site links to Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo, Xbox and Meta storefronts, yet a storefront link alone does not verify that a product is still sold in your country or that a particular edition includes every mode.

The available official descriptions also do not establish review consensus, difficulty curves, accessibility features, input-latency measurements, multiplayer status, current prices or a complete platform list for every game. Those details can affect your choice, especially if you need a specific control option or want to play with others. Check the current regional store and the game’s own support information for those questions.

Which game should you play first?

Choose Metal: Hellsinger for the most direct rhythm-shooter continuation, Hi-Fi Rush for beat-synced melee in a story-driven adventure, Crypt of the NecroDancer when movement itself must follow the beat, Cadence of Hyrule when you want that rule in a Zelda setting, Thumper for abstract speed and intensity, and Soundfall for a music-driven looter-shooter dungeon loop. The right next game is the one whose camera, timing rule and structure match the part of your previous experience you are trying to keep.
