1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBest overall dedicated RF pick: the Sennheiser RS 175-U. Sennheiser lists optical and 3.5 mm stereo inputs, up to 100 m range, 18 hours of operating time and support for up to two connected receivers. Those are published maximums and specifications, not guarantees for every home. Check your television’s available audio output and digital-audio format before buying; the wrong connection is a more common failure point than the headphone hardware.
Quick answer: which RF TV headphones should you choose?
The RS 175-U is the clearest fit when you want a purpose-built television system rather than general Bluetooth headphones. Its transmitter accepts optical digital or 3.5 mm stereo analog audio, and the headphones are designed around TV and hi-fi listening. Sennheiser’s specification sheet lists a 2.4–2.48 GHz carrier, up to 100 m range, 18 hours of operating time and up to two connected receivers. See the manufacturer’s current figures in the RS 175/195 specifications.

Choose a Bluetooth television system instead when you also need to use the headphones with phones, tablets or computers and accept more dependence on Bluetooth compatibility and latency. The Avantree HT5009 family is a useful comparison, but keep the generations separate: RTINGS compares the original HT5009, while Avantree’s current product page describes the HT5009 Plus. They are not interchangeable model names.
RF and Bluetooth are different kinds of wireless TV systems
“Wireless” describes the absence of a cable between you and the audio source; it does not identify the radio technology. A dedicated RF system uses a transmitter connected to the television and a matching receiver built into the headphones. Bluetooth systems also use a transmitter or the television’s own Bluetooth function, but pairing, codec support and latency depend on the TV and the connected devices.

| Decision point | Dedicated RF system (RS 175-U) | Bluetooth comparison (HT5009 family) |
|---|---|---|
| Technology identified in the sources | RF wireless; Sennheiser lists a 2.4–2.48 GHz carrier | Bluetooth; RTINGS identifies the original HT5009 as Bluetooth, and Avantree identifies HT5009 Plus as Bluetooth 5.2 |
| Typical connection path | TV optical output or 3.5 mm stereo output to the supplied transmitter | Optical or 3.5 mm AUX to the HT5009 Plus transmitter, or direct TV Bluetooth where supported |
| Published range | Up to 100 m (Sennheiser maximum) | Up to 30 ft/10 m for HT5009 Plus (Avantree claim) |
| Published operating time | 18 hours (Sennheiser specification) | Not stated in the supplied product evidence for HT5009 Plus |
| Simultaneous listeners | Up to two connected receivers (Sennheiser specification) | Up to two connected receivers for HT5009 Plus (Avantree claim) |
| Best fit | Dedicated late-night or shared television listening | People who also want broader Bluetooth use and a microphone |
These are different designs, not a universal ranking. RTINGS’ comparison, shown as updated October 1, 2024, found the RS 175 ahead in its assessment of comfort, build, sound profile and latency, while the original HT5009 had better battery performance and a microphone. That is a third-party test conclusion for those specific models, not a promise that every listener will prefer one.
Check the TV before you buy
Start with the television, not the headphone feature list. The RS 175-U requires one of the outputs supported by its transmitter:
- Optical digital audio: Look for a small square optical/TOSLINK port, often labelled Digital Audio Out or Optical Out.
- 3.5 mm stereo analog audio: This may be labelled Headphone, Audio Out or AUX. A jack labelled only for input will not work.
If you use optical, set the TV’s digital-audio output to PCM or stereo when required. Sennheiser’s RS 175 guidance points users toward PCM/stereo output; exact menu names vary by television, so use the current TV and headphone manuals for the final setting. A television left on a multichannel or unsupported format can produce silence even though the cable is connected.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that an HDMI port, USB socket or an optical-looking cover is an audio output. Confirm the label in the television manual or settings menu. If the TV has only HDMI ARC/eARC or an unusual proprietary output, the RS 175’s documented optical and 3.5 mm inputs do not by themselves establish compatibility; you would need an appropriate audio converter, which is outside the product evidence here.

What the RS 175-U specifications mean in practice
| Specification | Published value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless carrier | 2.4–2.48 GHz | Sennheiser’s stated RF band for the system; it is not a guarantee of identical performance in every radio environment. |
| Range | Up to 100 m | A manufacturer maximum. Walls, floors, building materials and local interference can reduce indoor coverage. |
| Operating time | Up to 18 hours | Sennheiser’s published figure; listening volume and battery condition affect actual time. |
| TV inputs | Optical and 3.5 mm stereo | Both are documented connection types. Your TV must provide one as an active output. |
| Construction | Closed, over-ear | Designed to surround the ears and reduce some outside sound; comfort depends on head shape, glasses and heat tolerance. |
| Maximum connected receivers | Two | The documentation supports two active listeners when compatible receivers are registered to the transmitter. |
Sennheiser’s FAQ also describes the system for TV and hi-fi use, repeats the up-to-18-hour operating figure and lists up to two active parallel headphones. Read the RS 175 FAQ (PDF) for the manufacturer’s operating details.
“Up to” matters. The 100 m figure should not be read as a guaranteed distance through several rooms, and 18 hours should not be treated as a fixed runtime at every volume or battery age. The specifications were updated by Sennheiser Hearing on August 11, 2026; regional packaging or later revisions can still differ, so verify the listing you are about to purchase.
RS 175-U versus HT5009 and HT5009 Plus
The two product names in this comparison come from different evidence. RTINGS tests and labels the original Avantree HT5009, while Avantree’s own page is for the HT5009 Plus. The Plus page identifies Bluetooth 5.2, optical and AUX inputs, a claimed range of up to 30 ft/10 m, audio latency under 68 ms and support for up to two receivers. It also warns that results depend on the television and connection method.
| Model and source | Connection and technology | Published or tested points | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sennheiser RS 175-U | Dedicated RF; optical or 3.5 mm stereo | Up to 100 m, 18 hours, two receivers; over-ear closed design | Manufacturer specifications; indoor range and runtime vary by conditions |
| Avantree HT5009 (RTINGS comparison) | Bluetooth | RTINGS rated it behind the RS 175 in comfort, build, sound profile and latency, but ahead in battery performance and with a microphone | Third-party assessment of the original HT5009, not the Plus revision |
| Avantree HT5009 Plus (official page) | Bluetooth 5.2; optical or 3.5 mm AUX transmitter input | Up to 30 ft/10 m, under 68 ms latency, two receivers | Avantree claims; performance depends on TV and connection method |
Avantree specifically cautions that direct Bluetooth from a television can produce noticeable audio delay and recommends using the included transmitter through optical or AUX for best results. That advice applies to the HT5009 Plus page, not automatically to every Bluetooth television or to the original HT5009.

How to connect the RS 175-U to a television
- Identify an audio output. Confirm that the TV has optical digital out or 3.5 mm stereo out. Check that the socket is an output, not an input.
- Choose the cable path. Use optical when available for a digital connection; use 3.5 mm when that is the TV’s usable stereo output. Connect the selected TV output to the RS 175 transmitter.
- Set optical format if necessary. In the TV’s sound settings, choose PCM or stereo for the digital output when the television offers that choice. Dolby, bitstream or multichannel modes may not be accepted by the headphone transmitter.
- Power the transmitter. Connect its power supply and place it where the TV cable can reach without a sharp bend or strain.
- Charge the headphones. Fully charge the headset using the supplied charging arrangement before a long viewing session. The 18-hour figure is a maximum claim, not a charging-time promise.
- Complete the receiver pairing procedure. Use the transmitter and headphone controls described in the current RS 175 manual. Keep the headset close to the transmitter during initial registration.
- Set a comfortable listening level. Start low and raise the volume gradually. If two people listen, each receiver can use its own volume control where supported.
- Test from your normal seat. Walk to the rooms or seating positions where you expect to listen. This reveals household range limitations that a specification-sheet maximum cannot predict.
Television menus differ by brand and software version. If your set has separate settings for internal speakers, optical output and headphone output, make sure the selected output is active; the label and behavior are television-specific.
Troubleshooting: fix the common failure points
No sound through an optical connection
- Confirm that the cable is fully seated and that the TV menu identifies the optical port as an output.
- Change the digital-audio format to PCM or stereo, then retest.
- Check that the transmitter is powered and that the headphone receiver is registered according to the manual.
- Try the TV’s built-in audio test or another source to distinguish a television-output problem from a headphone problem.
Sound works but is delayed
First identify the wireless path. The HT5009 comparison involves Bluetooth, and Avantree warns that direct TV Bluetooth can have noticeable delay; its transmitter-through-optical-or-AUX recommendation is intended to reduce that risk. Do not describe the RS 175’s RF link as Bluetooth. If delay remains, test another TV output and confirm that the source device is not applying a separate audio-delay setting.
Range is shorter than expected
The RS 175’s 100 m value is a stated maximum. Concrete walls, ceilings, metal furniture and competing radio devices can reduce coverage. Move the transmitter into open space near the TV, avoid enclosing it in a cabinet, and test the path with doors in their normal position. A shorter indoor distance does not by itself contradict the specification.

The TV speakers changed behavior after connection
Some televisions mute internal speakers when a 3.5 mm headphone output is active; others provide a menu to keep speakers on. This is a TV-specific behavior. Look for a setting such as simultaneous TV speakers and headphone output, and use optical instead if you need the television speakers to remain independently active and your set supports that arrangement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the Bluetooth alternative makes more sense
A Bluetooth design is worth considering if the same headphones must switch between television, phone and computer use. A built-in microphone can also matter for calls, and RTINGS found the original HT5009 stronger than the RS 175 in battery performance in its comparison. Those advantages come with more variables: the television may lack Bluetooth audio transmission, pairing may be limited to one device, and direct Bluetooth can introduce delay.
The HT5009 Plus page gives the transmitter its own optical and AUX inputs, which makes it less dependent on the TV having Bluetooth. Avantree’s claimed under-68-ms latency and 30 ft/10 m range apply to HT5009 Plus and should not be substituted for measurements of the original HT5009. Confirm the exact model printed on the box and product page before relying on a specification.

Comfort, maintenance and shared listening
The RS 175-U uses a closed over-ear design. Over-ear cups can be preferable for late-night viewing because they keep the listening experience private and avoid a cable across the room, but they may feel warm during long sessions. Fit depends on your head, glasses and preferred clamping pressure; no specification sheet can settle that personal choice.

Replacement ear cushions are listed for the RS 175/HDR 175 family by Sennheiser Canada at Sennheiser’s TV-hearing collection. Retail availability and exact regional compatibility were not established, so confirm the part number and shipping region before ordering.
For a couple or caregiver-and-viewer setup, the documented two-receiver limit is a practical selection criterion. Verify that the additional receiver is the compatible model for your system; do not assume that any wireless headphone can join the transmitter.
A buying checklist for an RF television headset
- Output match: Your TV has an active optical or 3.5 mm stereo output supported by the transmitter.
- Digital format: Optical output can be set to PCM or stereo if the transmitter requires it.
- Wireless type: The product is genuinely RF if that is your requirement, rather than merely Bluetooth wireless.
- Range expectation: Manufacturer maximums are treated as ceilings, not guaranteed room-to-room distances.
- Runtime: Published battery claims are compared with their “up to” wording and unknown test conditions.
- Listener count: Confirm the number of receivers the exact model and revision support.
- Model revision: Distinguish RS 175-U from other RS-series models and HT5009 from HT5009 Plus.
- Current purchase terms: Check live price, stock, warranty, regional specifications and return policy at the time of purchase; those details were not established in the available product evidence.
Bottom line
For a dedicated RF television setup, the Sennheiser RS 175-U is the strongest source-backed choice: optical and 3.5 mm inputs, an 18-hour stated runtime, up to two receivers and a published range of up to 100 m. Buy it only after confirming your TV’s output and, for optical, its PCM/stereo setting. Consider a Bluetooth system such as the correctly identified HT5009 Plus when multi-device use, a microphone or broader Bluetooth compatibility matters more than the simplicity of a dedicated RF link.
