There is no single best monitor or TV for RetroPie: the right choice is a screen with an HDMI input and a supported display mode for your Raspberry Pi, plus the shape and presentation you prefer. For most setups, start by comparing an HDMI monitor or television against your Pi’s output capabilities; choose a CRT only if its distinctive look matters enough to accept more setup variables.
Check your Raspberry Pi’s HDMI capabilities first
Display choice depends partly on which Raspberry Pi you use. Raspberry Pi Ltd.’s KMS HDMI troubleshooting guide states that Raspberry Pi 3 and earlier models with a full-size HDMI connector can output up to 1920 × 1200 at 60 Hz. Raspberry Pi 4 and 5 use two micro HDMI ports and support 4K output, but their port and simultaneous-display capabilities differ.

| Raspberry Pi generation | HDMI connection and capability described by Raspberry Pi Ltd. | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 3 and earlier | One full-size HDMI port; up to 1920 × 1200 at 60 Hz. | The screen accepts a mode the Pi can output; use the appropriate cable or adapter for its input. |
| Raspberry Pi 4 | Two micro HDMI ports. Depending on setup, HDMI 0 can reach 4Kp60; when driving two 4K displays, both are limited to p30. | Which port you use and whether you need one display or two. |
| Raspberry Pi 5 | Two micro HDMI ports; Raspberry Pi Ltd. says it can achieve 4Kp60 on both ports simultaneously. | That the display and connection support the mode you want. |
These are hardware output capabilities, not a claim that a 4K screen improves RetroPie gameplay. Pick a mode that both the Pi and display support; a higher resolution is not automatically a better fit for retro games.

Choose a monitor or TV based on how you will play
HDMI monitor
An HDMI monitor is a straightforward choice for a desk or compact setup. Confirm that it has an HDMI input and supports a mode compatible with your Pi. If the monitor uses a connector other than the Pi’s output, account for the required cable or adapter rather than assuming the connection is direct.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
HDMI television
A television is a practical option when you want a larger shared screen. It still needs to accept a mode the Pi can output, and it must be set to the HDMI input connected to the Pi. A community support thread titled “HDMI on Monitor but Not TV” illustrates that a monitor working does not by itself establish that a TV connection is configured correctly; it is an individual report, not a general compatibility finding. See the RetroPie discussion.
CRT display
A CRT may appeal if you want a period-style display, but the available evidence does not establish a universal Pi-to-CRT setup. The connection path, adapter or converter, input, and supported video mode all matter. A RetroPie community discussion reports screen-edge cropping as one user’s issue and points toward overscan adjustment; that is a possible setup problem, not a guaranteed fix or a setting that applies to every display. See “Retro Pie & CRT – Issues & options?”.

Understand why resolution support can vary
When HDMI output starts, the graphics system reads information from the display’s EDID to identify supported modes. Raspberry Pi Ltd. explains: “The EDID block contains a great deal of information, but it is primarily used to specify which resolutions the display supports, so Raspberry Pi can be set up to output an appropriate resolution.” The practical implication is that compatibility depends on both the Pi and the particular display—not just on whether the plug fits.
Software graphics stacks also affect setup advice. Raspberry Pi’s documentation covers the move from legacy firmware control and FKMS toward KMS, and states that Bookworm does not support Legacy or FKMS graphics stacks. Instructions written for older systems may therefore not apply to a current installation. Raspberry Pi’s config.txt documentation describes these settings and their context; do not copy legacy HDMI configuration lines into a current setup without confirming they are supported by its graphics stack.

Troubleshoot a blank or incorrectly detected screen
- Check the display state. Turn the screen on and select the HDMI input connected to the Pi. EDID information may not be available if the display is off or on another input.
- Check the physical connection. Reseat the cable. If possible, test a different HDMI cable, Pi port, or display input. Raspberry Pi identifies defective cables or ports as possible causes; missing communication lines such as hotplug can also prevent detection. See its HDMI issues guidance.
- Note when the picture disappears. If boot content appears but the screen goes black as the graphics stack takes control, an EDID-reading problem is one possible cause described in Raspberry Pi’s KMS guide. Check the screen’s input and connection before changing software settings.
- Match instructions to the installed system. Verify whether guidance applies to your Raspberry Pi OS version and graphics stack. Older settings may not be implemented under KMS, and Bookworm does not support Legacy or FKMS.
For a cropped CRT picture, treat overscan as a display-specific adjustment rather than applying a number found in a forum post universally. The cited community thread documents a user’s experience, not a complete compatibility guide.

Make the choice without overbuying
- Choose an HDMI monitor if you want a desk-oriented setup; choose an HDMI TV if a larger shared screen better suits where you play.
- Before buying, check the Pi’s HDMI connector, the screen’s input, and their supported modes. Include an adapter or converter only if the connection requires one.
- Choose a CRT for its presentation, not because it is guaranteed to work without configuration.
- If an existing screen is not detected, test the input and cable before purchasing a replacement. A new cable is a troubleshooting option only when the current one may be faulty.
