Choose the LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System 71374 for the most elaborate interactive display, LEGO Atari 2600 10306 for cartridge-era nostalgia and hidden-scene storytelling, or LEGO PAC-MAN Arcade 10323 for a visually dominant arcade centerpiece. All four are display models rather than playable game systems.
Quick verdict: which retro gaming LEGO set should you buy?
The right set depends less on a single “best” score than on the kind of retro hardware you want on your shelf. A handheld is easier to place, a cartridge console offers more construction detail, and an arcade cabinet creates the strongest room focal point.

What “best” means for a retro gaming LEGO set
These products are architectural models that recreate the look and tactile details of classic gaming hardware. They do not run cartridges, generate a video signal or replace an original console. The useful comparison is therefore about authenticity, building complexity, display presence and the kind of interaction the model provides.

Authenticity of the subject
The Game Boy concentrates on the silhouette and controls of Nintendo’s handheld: the +Control Pad, A and B buttons, SELECT and START buttons, contrast and volume dials, and the Game Pak slot. The NES expands the subject into a complete living-room setup with a console, controller, cartridge and television. Atari’s model focuses on the four-switch console revision that debuted in 1980, while PAC-MAN reproduces the visual language of a freestanding arcade cabinet.
Display footprint
Measure the shelf before choosing. The handheld has the smallest footprint by a wide margin. The NES television and Atari console need a broad, deep surface, and the PAC-MAN cabinet is intended to dominate a display rather than sit beside a few small models. Leave room to reach moving handles, open panels and removable cartridges instead of measuring only the static brick outline.
Interaction versus playability
“Interactive” means mechanical or display interaction, not electronic gameplay. The NES screen moves when its handle is turned; Atari includes a movable joystick and removable cartridges; PAC-MAN has a hand-operated maze and a light brick for the coin slot. The Game Boy’s screen and Game Paks can be swapped, but the model has no light, sound or digital function.

What you build
This set is a near 1:1 brick-built replica of Nintendo’s original Game Boy. Its most convincing details are the familiar control layout and the functional-looking hardware controls: the cross-shaped +Control Pad, A and B buttons, SELECT and START, contrast and volume dials, and the cartridge opening.
Two interchangeable brick-built Game Paks and lenticular screen panels let you present either Super Mario Land or The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. A Nintendo start screen is also available, so the front can be changed to suit the display without rebuilding the whole handheld. The included display stand keeps the model upright and makes the interchangeable elements easy to show.
Why it suits adult collectors
The design communicates the object immediately even on a crowded shelf. Its handheld scale works in an office, bookcase or media cabinet where a full console-and-TV scene would be impractical. It also makes a sensible first retro gaming set: the build is substantial enough to feel like an adult display model, but the finished object does not require a dedicated furniture-sized space.
Important limitations
This is a static replica. The buttons, dials and cartridge slot are visual recreations, and there is no light, sound or digital play. The lenticular screens create the appearance of an active game display, but they are not an electronic screen. Buy it for the physical design and the ability to change the front presentation, not as a playable handheld.

LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System 71374: best elaborate interactive display
What makes the build distinctive
The NES set recreates an entire 1980s gaming setup rather than only a console. You assemble the console, a controller, a Game Pak cartridge and a retro-styled television. The console has a locking Game Pak slot and a connecting controller cable, details that give the model a stronger sense of hardware authenticity than a simple rectangular display box.
The television is the centerpiece. A handle-operated mechanism moves an 8-bit Mario scene across the screen, turning the TV into a small mechanical animation. The action brick can also be scanned by a separate interactive LEGO Mario figure, which is not included. That optional integration is an extra display effect, not a replacement for the physical controller or a way to play NES software.
Who should choose it
Pick this model if the building experience and the finished scene matter as much as the console itself. It has the most elaborate mechanism in the comparison and tells a complete story: hardware, controller, cartridge and television in one composition. It is especially effective on a dedicated gaming shelf where the moving screen can be demonstrated.
Space and handling considerations
The television is deeper and wider than the handheld, and the complete model needs a stable, unobstructed shelf. Position it so the screen handle can be turned from the front or side. Avoid placing heavy objects directly above the TV or console if you intend to remove the cartridge or access the mechanism.
Availability context
LEGO marks the NES set retired and lists $269.99 on the retrieved US page. A retired label means ordinary LEGO inventory may no longer be replenished; buyers should treat current listings as secondary-market opportunities and verify condition, completeness and seller reputation.
LEGO Atari 2600 10306: best cartridge-era nostalgia
The console and cartridges
Atari’s set is built around the four-switch revision introduced in 1980. Its cartridge emphasis makes it the strongest choice for collectors whose memories center on swapping game cartridges rather than on a particular Nintendo character. Three included cartridges represent Asteroids, Adventure and Centipede, and each is accompanied by a small game-scene build.

- This toy truck features cool accessories including a winner trophy, microphone, mobile phone and game items, such as big fists and a toy sword
- This LEGO City game tournament game is a birthday or everyday gift for kids 7+ years old who love games, extreme sports and truck toys
The cartridge holder gives those small builds a dedicated storage location, so the model can be displayed with the games visible or with one cartridge inserted. A movable joystick completes the recognizable control layout without pretending to be an electronic controller.
The hidden 1980s gaming-room vignette
A concealed gaming-room scene is the set’s storytelling feature. Opening the appropriate section reveals a miniature 1980s room, turning the console from a front-facing replica into a small diorama. This is a useful distinction from the NES: the Atari’s surprise is in the hidden interior and the collection of cartridges, while the NES’s main effect is the moving TV screen.
Historical and release details
The LEGO Group announced the set on July 19, 2022, with a launch date of August 1, 2022. The launch material specified a $/€239.99 recommended retail price for the relevant markets, an 18+ designation and the published piece count and dimensions shown in the comparison table. Designer Chris McVeigh described the original Atari 2600 as “one of the most memorable gifts I got as a kid” and recalled spending “hours and hours in front of the TV” playing arcade games at home.
Availability context
The current US product page marks the Atari model retired. If you buy one second-hand, confirm that all three cartridges, the joystick, the scene elements and the cartridge holder are present; missing small parts can materially change the display value.
LEGO PAC-MAN Arcade 10323: best arcade centerpiece
What the cabinet includes
PAC-MAN Arcade is designed to look like a real 1980s arcade cabinet, but the official listing describes it as non-functional. The front includes a four-way joystick and a light brick for the coin slot. Turning a handle activates a mechanical representation of the maze, giving the cabinet movement without electronics or a playable game board.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The display case contains rotating PAC-MAN, BLINKY and CLYDE figures. A separate 1980s arcade scene includes a gaming minifigure and a display case, while an openable rear panel adds another way to inspect the construction. Together, those features make the model read as an arcade environment rather than only a flat cabinet façade.
Why it works as a focal point
The cabinet has the strongest visual identity of the four sets. Bright character shapes, the marquee-like front and the coin-slot light draw attention from across a room. Choose it when the model needs to anchor a games room, office or media display and when you prefer arcade culture to home-console nostalgia.

Limitations and stock
There is no electronic PAC-MAN game inside, and the mechanical maze is a display feature activated by hand. The retrieved US listing showed $269.99 and sold-out status. Because availability can change, check the live LEGO page and, if considering a secondary-market copy, ask for photographs of the cabinet front, rear panel, maze mechanism and rotating character assembly.

How to choose in five steps
- Measure the display location. Compare your shelf’s usable width and depth with the published dimensions, then add clearance for the NES handle, Atari cartridges, PAC-MAN rear panel and any display stand.
- Choose the era you actually remember. Select Game Boy for handheld Nintendo memories, NES for a home-console setup, Atari for cartridge-era history, or PAC-MAN for arcade culture.
- Decide whether mechanical movement matters. The NES and PAC-MAN provide the most obvious demonstrations; Atari offers tactile cartridge and joystick details; Game Boy’s changing screens are a presentation choice rather than moving machinery.
- Set a realistic acquisition budget. The Game Boy has the lowest listed price. The other three launched or listed around the $239.99-to-$269.99 range, and retired or sold-out status can make secondary-market asking prices differ substantially.
- Check completeness before buying retired stock. Request an inventory or clear photographs of every cartridge, minifigure, scene element, controller, cable, panel and mechanism. Confirm that instructions and the original box are included only if those matter to your collection; the model’s structural completeness is the priority.
Displaying and caring for a finished model
Provide operating clearance
Static display models still need working space. Leave a hand’s width in front of the NES and PAC-MAN mechanisms so visitors can turn the handles without knocking the model. Keep the Atari’s cartridges where they can be removed safely, and place the Game Boy stand on a level surface so the handheld does not lean.
Control dust and sunlight
Dust settles most visibly in grille patterns, button recesses, cartridge slots and maze details. Use a soft, clean brush or air blower rather than a wet cloth that could catch on small elements. Direct sunlight can fade printed or colored components over time, so a shaded shelf or display cabinet is preferable for long-term preservation.
Protect moving assemblies
Turn handles slowly and stop if resistance increases. Do not force the NES screen, PAC-MAN maze or rotating figures past their intended travel. If a mechanism feels loose after moving the model, return the set to a stable surface before inspecting it; lifting a large assembled section by a small moving component can separate bricks.
Present interchangeable parts deliberately
For the Game Boy, choose one screen and Game Pak combination for the main display and store the alternatives in a labeled container. The same approach works for Atari’s cartridges and scene elements: decide whether the console should show a game inserted, the cartridge holder filled, or the hidden room open, then keep unused pieces together to prevent loss.
Buying retired and sold-out sets safely
A LEGO retirement or sold-out label describes the manufacturer’s current inventory, not the quality of the model. It does mean that availability, price and condition are less predictable than for a backordered product. Compare several listings, ask whether the set has been dismantled or partially built, and verify that replacement parts are available before committing to a high premium.
Recommended Free Tools
- For a sealed set, inspect photographs for crushed corners, water damage and broken seals.
- For a used build, request a parts inventory and close-ups of the moving mechanisms.
- Confirm that printed or lenticular elements are present and undamaged, since they are central to the Game Boy and NES presentation.
- Ask whether the original instructions are included if you plan to rebuild or display the set in collector condition.
- Use payment and delivery protections appropriate to the marketplace, especially for expensive retired sets.
Final recommendation
Buy LEGO Game Boy 72046 if you want the most practical combination of recognizable hardware, small footprint and current availability. Choose LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System 71374 when the goal is the richest build and a demonstrable mechanical display. Choose LEGO Atari 2600 10306 for cartridge nostalgia, three game vignettes and a hidden-room surprise. Choose LEGO PAC-MAN Arcade 10323 when a non-functional but mechanically animated arcade cabinet should be the centerpiece of the room.
