If you want to revisit the games named in the headline, play the original Resident Evil 5 first, then Resident Evil 6. Capcom describes RE5 as built around two operatives and co-op play, and says RE6 takes place after RE5 and tells several interconnected stories. If you would rather play a different series entry, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 4 are alternatives, each for a different kind of revisit.
Start with Resident Evil 5, then play Resident Evil 6
This is the clearest order if your interest is specifically in the two games named in the title. Capcom says Resident Evil 6 takes place after RE5, so starting with RE5 gives you the supported story sequence for this pair.

Resident Evil 5: the direct pick for co-op
Capcom describes RE5 as following two B.S.A.A. operatives, Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar, and says players can play solo or with a friend. Its official announcement calls the game “Highly regarded for its co-op gameplay.” Choose it if you want a game designed around that two-character partnership, whether you play alone or cooperatively. See Capcom’s Resident Evil lineup.

RE6 follows RE5 and connects multiple storylines, including those involving Leon S. Kennedy and Sherry Birkin, according to Capcom. Choose it after RE5 if you want to continue into the next entry in this pair rather than jump to another numbered game.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Capcom announced a Nintendo Switch Resident Evil Triple Pack in 2019: it included RE4 on a cartridge and download codes for RE5 and RE6. That is a historical bundle description, not confirmation that copies are currently available or that a particular code can still be redeemed. Check the listing’s region, Switch compatibility, stock, and code status before buying.
Choose another Resident Evil game if you want a change
Capcom’s lineup also includes RE2, RE3, and RE4. The official catalog confirms these as series options but does not rank them or compare their scares, pacing, or mechanics. The recommendations below are editorial picks based on what you may want from your next game, not an official Capcom ranking.
Rank #2
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

| Game | Why choose it | Connection to RE5 or RE6 |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 2 | Choose it if you want to revisit a different numbered entry rather than continue directly from RE5. | Capcom’s cited material establishes it as a series option, but does not establish a direct lead-in to RE5 or RE6. |
| Resident Evil 3 | Choose it if you want another distinct series entry while you wait. | Capcom’s cited material establishes it as a series option, but does not establish a direct lead-in to RE5 or RE6. |
| Resident Evil 4 | Choose it if you want a different numbered entry, or if the historical Triple Pack is relevant to your platform and region. | It is part of Capcom’s catalog and was the cartridge game in the 2019 Switch Triple Pack; the cited material does not establish it as a story prerequisite for RE5 or RE6. |
If none of those fits, Capcom’s catalog also lists Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Village, Revelations, and Revelations 2. The lineup confirms their presence in the series; it does not establish a best-to-worst order or say that they prepare you specifically for RE5 or RE6.

Check your platform before choosing a version
Platform availability can change the practical choice. In a September 10, 2026 announcement, Capcom gave October 16, 2026 as the Nintendo Switch 2 release date for RE2, RE3, and RE4. That date is upcoming as of October 4, 2026; it is not a statement about availability on other platforms. Check Capcom’s announcement for the platform-specific details before planning a purchase. Are the RE5 and RE6 remakes confirmed?
