What “realistic” means in a WW2 shooter
A realistic World War II shooter is not necessarily the game with the slowest movement or the fewest rounds per magazine. For PC players, realism usually combines several attributes:
- Historical presentation: period weapons, uniforms, vehicles, locations, and equipment.
- Combat consequences: whether positioning, cover, identification, and timing matter more than rapid respawns and run-and-gun aim.
- Command structure: whether players operate in roles, squads, platoons, or a larger chain of command.
- Communication: how much success depends on voice chat, local proximity chat, squad orders, and coordinated objectives.
- Combined arms: whether infantry, tanks, artillery, logistics, and aircraft operate in the same battle.
- Player control: whether you personally control one soldier, direct AI squadmates, or rely entirely on human teammates.
None of these dimensions automatically proves that a game models real combat correctly. The statements below are descriptions published by the games’ official pages or store listings, and should be read as product claims rather than independent historical or technical audits.

Quick comparison
| Game | Best fit | What the official information establishes | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Squad 44 | Players seeking the most simulation-focused option and organized teamwork | Described as a WW2 simulation focused on historical accuracy; 50-versus-50 combined-arms battles; historical battlefields; infantry roles; vehicles; in-game voice communication; difficult learning curve | Communication, cohesion, and teamwork are central, so it is a poor match for completely solo or casual play |
| Hell Let Loose | Players wanting large tactical battles with clearly defined roles | 50-versus-50 multiplayer; 14 roles across Command, Infantry, Recon, and Armour; historically inspired settings and equipment; tanks, artillery, supplies; proximity, command, and unit voice channels | Coordination is fundamental, while the listing does not establish that it is the most historically accurate game |
| Enlisted | Players who want squad-based combined arms with AI-controlled squadmates | You directly control one soldier; other squad members are AI-controlled and obey orders; you can switch between squadmates; infantry, armored vehicles, and aircraft fight together; PC version and Windows requirements are listed | Its AI-squad structure feels different from games built around every squad member being a human player; publisher authenticity claims are not independent validation |
1. Squad 44: the strongest fit for simulation depth
What its official description promises
The official game page calls Squad 44 a “WW2 simulation game” focused on historical accuracy, large-scale battles, a difficult learning curve, and an intense need for cohesion, communication, and teamwork. It describes 50-versus-50 combined-arms play, historical battlefields, infantry roles, vehicles, and in-game voice communication.
The same page claims six theatres, 20 large-scale battlefields, more than 150 World War II weapons, and over 120 vehicles. Those are publisher-published counts, not independently audited totals. It also says that historical levels, vehicles, uniforms, and weapons were recreated from original sources. That wording explains the game’s design goal; it is not proof that every item or mechanic has been independently verified by historians.
Why it is the first recommendation
Among the three options, Squad 44 presents the clearest simulation-first identity. Its stated learning curve and emphasis on cohesion make it the natural starting point for a reader who wants a battlefield experience built around formation, communication, and deliberate decisions rather than constant solo action.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The 50-versus-50 format also gives the game a larger operational scale than a small infantry-only match. Vehicles and infantry roles are part of the same battle, so your experience can depend on how effectively a team shares information and combines its capabilities. That is attractive if “realistic” means feeling like one participant in a larger military operation rather than a self-contained hero.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Who should avoid it
- You do not want voice chat: the official description makes communication and teamwork central rather than optional flavor.
- You expect to learn instantly: the publisher explicitly describes a difficult learning curve.
- You want a reliable solo campaign: the cited material describes large-scale multiplayer features, not a single-player campaign or offline AI mode.
- You need a verified hardware target: the available information does not establish current comparable PC requirements; check the current store listing before buying.
What “realism” means here
Squad 44 is the best fit when realism means historical presentation, a demanding pace, role discipline, and coordinated multiplayer. It is not possible to infer from the official page alone how accurately individual weapons handle, how lethal specific ammunition is, or how balanced current maps are. Treat those as questions for current player reviews and testing rather than established facts.
2. Hell Let Loose: a large-scale tactical compromise
Scale, roles, and battlefield structure
The Steam listing describes Hell Let Loose as a 50-versus-50 multiplayer game with 14 roles divided among Command, Infantry, Recon, and Armour. It presents historically inspired battles and equipment, along with tanks, artillery, supplies, and other combined-arms elements.
Its maps use aerial and satellite imagery of real battle locations, according to the listing. That gives the environments a geographic reference beyond a generic fictional arena, although the listing does not establish that every map is a one-to-one historical reconstruction.

Communication channels
Hell Let Loose lists proximity, command, and unit voice channels. The Steam description states that “Communication is essential.” In practical terms, the design is aimed at players who are willing to share information, follow a role, and coordinate with a unit rather than treat every engagement as an isolated duel.

This makes it a useful middle choice. It offers the organizational structure and combined arms associated with a serious tactical shooter, but its clear role categories can be easier to understand than a system in which every player must learn a much broader simulation framework at once. That is an editorial fit based on the listed features, not an independently tested difficulty ranking.
Who should choose it
- Choose it for large public battles: the listed 50-versus-50 format gives you a substantial team context.
- Choose it for role variety: Command, Infantry, Recon, and Armour cover different responsibilities within the battle.
- Choose it if you want historical atmosphere: the listing emphasizes real battle locations and period equipment.
- Choose it if you can use voice channels: proximity, command, and unit chat are part of the stated communication system.
What the evidence does not prove
The listing supports calling Hell Let Loose tactical and communication-heavy. It does not establish that it is more historically accurate than Squad 44 or Enlisted, nor does it provide a neutral realism score. It also does not give a comparable current PC-requirements table in the supplied information. Confirm the present store page for operating-system, CPU, GPU, memory, and storage requirements before purchase.
3. Enlisted: squad combat without a full human squad
How its squad system works
Enlisted’s official page says you directly control one member of your squad while the other soldiers are controlled by AI and obey your orders. You can switch between squad members during a battle. The publisher describes each squad as containing several soldiers who can be trained and equipped with new weapons and items before entering combat.
Recommended Free Tools
That structure is the defining difference from the other two recommendations. You are not dependent on every rifleman in your immediate group being a human player with a working microphone. You still make tactical choices and issue orders, but AI soldiers fill the formation and can become the active character when you switch to them.

Combined arms and historical equipment
The official material places infantry, armored vehicles, and aircraft in the same battles. The publisher says the weapons and vehicles are aligned with historical facts. That is a vendor statement about intended authenticity, not independent verification of historical fidelity or weapon performance.
For a player who wants the visual and equipment language of World War II while retaining more direct control over a squad, this is the most distinct option in the group. It is also the clearest answer for someone whose objection to hardcore shooters is not the subject matter but the requirement that every teammate coordinate by voice.
PC requirements listed by the publisher
The official Enlisted page currently lists the following figures for its PC version. They were shown on the page accessed in 2026 and can change with updates, so check the live page before installation.
| Specification | Minimum or minimal client | Recommended or full client |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 7/8/10/11, 64-bit | Windows 7/8/10/11, 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i3 or better | Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or better |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM |

The page identifies Enlisted as free to play and lists it for PC alongside consoles. Free access does not mean every future feature, progression element, or download size will remain unchanged; the published requirements and current client should be treated as the authoritative check at the time you install.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which game fits your preferred kind of realism?
| Your priority | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum simulation emphasis and historical battlefield presentation | Squad 44 | Its official description explicitly foregrounds historical accuracy, a difficult learning curve, cohesion, communication, and teamwork |
| Large tactical battles with a structured role system | Hell Let Loose | It lists 50-versus-50 play, 14 roles, combined arms, real battle locations, and multiple voice channels |
| Control of a squad with AI members | Enlisted | You control one soldier, issue orders to AI squadmates, and can switch between members |
| Infantry, armor, and aircraft in one battle | Enlisted or Hell Let Loose | Both official descriptions explicitly include combined arms; Squad 44 does as well, with its 50-versus-50 format |
| Playing without relying on every nearby teammate having a microphone | Enlisted | AI soldiers occupy the rest of your squad, although the game is still a multiplayer combined-arms title and coordination is not necessarily absent |
| Willingness to use voice chat as part of the experience | Squad 44 or Hell Let Loose | Both descriptions make communication a central feature, with Hell Let Loose listing proximity, command, and unit channels |
Can you play these games without communicating?
Yes, you can launch a match without speaking, but that is different from receiving the intended experience.
Squad 44
This is the weakest fit for a no-voice requirement. Its official description specifically connects the game to cohesion, communication, and teamwork, and it warns of a difficult learning curve. You may be able to remain silent, but the design premise assumes information sharing and coordinated action.
Hell Let Loose
The listing calls communication essential and provides separate proximity, command, and unit channels. A player who refuses voice chat can still occupy a role, but will miss a major part of how the game organizes information and objectives.
Enlisted
Enlisted reduces dependence on a fully human squad because AI soldiers follow your orders. That makes it the most practical choice for someone who wants squad control without having to recruit or coordinate every member of the immediate formation. It does not guarantee a completely communication-free experience: the broader battle still includes other players, vehicles, aircraft, and shared objectives.
How to choose before downloading
- Decide whether realism means simulation or historical atmosphere. If you want the most explicitly simulation-focused description, begin with Squad 44. If you mainly want period equipment and locations with a more structured large battle, consider Hell Let Loose. If your priority is controlling a historically themed squad with AI members, choose Enlisted.
- Set your communication tolerance. A microphone and willingness to listen matter most in Squad 44 and Hell Let Loose. Enlisted is the safer first trial when you prefer to give orders to AI squadmates.
- Choose your preferred unit scale. Squad 44 and Hell Let Loose are built around large human multiplayer battles. Enlisted puts a controllable squad directly under your command inside a larger combined-arms battle.
- Check the live store page. Requirements, supported operating systems, download sizes, prices, editions, server availability, and update states can change. Only Enlisted’s figures are specified in the supplied material; do not use them as a hardware proxy for the other two games.
- Plan your audio setup. If you intend to join squad chat, a gaming headset with a microphone can make proximity and unit communication easier. It is an optional setup recommendation, not a stated requirement and not a tested product endorsement.
Important limits when comparing them
- No independent realism ranking: the official pages describe design goals and features, but do not provide a neutral score comparing historical fidelity.
- No verified population comparison: current concurrent players, regional server populations, queue times, and match quality were not established.
- No common performance test: only Enlisted has the listed PC specifications in the available material, so a three-way benchmark would be misleading.
- Counts are publisher claims: Squad 44’s six theatres, 20 battlefields, more than 150 weapons, and over 120 vehicles are published product figures, not independent audits.
- Features can change: patches may alter maps, requirements, monetization, progression, balance, and available modes.
Bottom line
Pick Squad 44 when you want the clearest simulation-first identity and accept a demanding, communication-heavy multiplayer experience. Pick Hell Let Loose when you want a broad 50-versus-50 battle with defined roles, combined arms, historically inspired settings, and several voice channels. Pick Enlisted when AI squadmates, direct squad control, and mixed infantry-vehicle-air battles matter more than having every nearby soldier controlled by a human.
Those are three different answers to “realistic.” Your best choice depends less on a universal realism label than on whether you want simulation depth, organized human teamwork, or control of an AI-supported squad.
