For a headless Raspberry Pi that runs FFmpeg around the clock, a USB SSD is the practical general-purpose boot-storage choice if your exact Pi supports USB mass-storage boot and the SSD, enclosure and power setup are compatible. A microSD card remains the simplest option. If you are using Raspberry Pi 5 and want NVMe, you will need a compatible M.2 adapter.
The key question is whether the Pi records video locally. If FFmpeg only sends a live stream to YouTube, continuous transmission does not mean continuous writes to the boot drive. Choose capacity for the operating system, software, logs and working files; size a recording drive from the recording bitrate and the time you want to keep footage.
Choose storage for the exact Raspberry Pi model and workload
The title does not specify a Pi generation, so check the boot options for your board before buying. Raspberry Pi says microSD is the common boot medium, while some newer models can boot from USB mass storage and other options. Its getting-started guide says faster storage can improve system performance, but that is not a quantified reliability or lifespan guarantee. Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation
| Storage type | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| microSD | The simplest setup, particularly when you want a compact build and are not recording large files locally. | Use a card compatible with your board and choose capacity for the OS and headroom. Do not assume a particular card lifespan without endurance information for its exact model. |
| USB SSD | A practical boot drive or external storage option on a Pi that supports USB mass-storage boot; useful when you want more capacity for local files. | Confirm the board’s boot support and check the SSD, enclosure or adapter, cable and power configuration together. Speed alone does not establish reliability or lifespan. |
| Pi 5 NVMe | A model-specific option for a Raspberry Pi 5 build that calls for an M.2 NVMe drive. | Requires a compatible M.2 adapter. Raspberry Pi’s official SSD page lists M.2 2230 NVMe 1.4 drives in 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB capacities. Raspberry Pi SSDs |
How much capacity do you need?
If the Pi only streams
For a headless Raspberry Pi OS Lite installation, Raspberry Pi specifies an 8 GB minimum. The official minimum is 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Desktop and Full. Raspberry Pi also advises allowing room to grow. A 64 GB drive or card is a practical choice for OS Lite when you want space beyond the minimum for updates, logs and modest local files; that capacity recommendation is a planning judgment, not an official minimum. - Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Raspberry Pi’s official microSD cards are offered in 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB sizes, with C10, U3, V30 and A2 ratings. Its published 4 kB random-I/O figures are 3,200 read IOPS and 1,200 write IOPS for Raspberry Pi 4, and 5,000 read IOPS and 2,000 write IOPS for Raspberry Pi 5. These specifications describe those official cards; they do not establish the performance or endurance of every card carrying similar labels. Raspberry Pi SD Cards documentation
If FFmpeg records locally
Estimate storage from the recording bitrate and retention period, not from the fact that the stream runs continuously. As a starting estimate, daily storage in bytes is approximately (video bitrate + audio bitrate) × 86,400 ÷ 8. Multiply by the number of days to retain, then add headroom for filesystem overhead and other files. The actual recording bitrate and format are choices in your FFmpeg workflow; YouTube’s ingestion recommendations do not tell you what local recording settings to use.

Keep storage capacity separate from YouTube stream settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval and RTMPS for secure delivery. For H.264 it lists 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3–8 Mbps for 720p30. Those are ingestion bitrate ranges, not a storage-capacity recommendation for a Raspberry Pi drive. YouTube live encoder settings
As YouTube puts it, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Choose the stream settings for your output and upload connection, then calculate local capacity separately if you also record.

Check before buying in India
Current India retailer stock, prices, warranty terms and seller-level comparisons are not established here, so compare the exact listing and manufacturer specifications before purchase. Check that the card, SSD or adapter matches your Pi model and workload. Do not choose a card on the basis of a generic “high-endurance” claim unless the exact product’s documentation supports it.
- For microSD, verify capacity and the exact card model; Raspberry Pi’s official card page gives its own card sizes and ratings, not the lifetime of all cards.
- For USB SSD boot, verify that your board supports USB mass-storage boot, then confirm compatibility and power requirements for the particular drive, enclosure and cable.
- For NVMe, treat it as a Pi 5-specific setup and verify the M.2 adapter and drive compatibility.
- If recording, estimate daily file size using the actual audio and video recording bitrates and the retention period you need.
Troubleshoot common storage decisions
The Pi will not boot from the SSD
First confirm that the exact board supports USB mass-storage boot and that boot configuration supports the intended device. Recheck the SSD connection, enclosure and power arrangement; USB boot support on some newer models does not imply that every drive-and-adapter combination will work.

The drive fills sooner than expected
Check whether FFmpeg is saving a local recording or whether logs and other files are accumulating. If footage is being retained, calculate the expected daily size from the recording bitrates and reduce retention or provide more capacity as appropriate.
You are buying a larger drive because the stream is 24/7
A live stream sent to YouTube is transmitted over the network; it is not automatically a local recording. If no local video is saved, size the boot drive for the OS, packages, logs and working files rather than multiplying the stream bitrate across every day.
