For repeatable Puppeteer visual tests, choose the capture scope that matches what you are testing, then keep the browser, viewport, device scale, page data, loaded assets, fonts, and UI state consistent. Wait for a meaningful application-ready condition before capturing; a screenshot option alone cannot make changing page state deterministic.
Choose the capture scope that matches the test
Puppeteer provides page screenshots with Page.screenshot() and element screenshots with ElementHandle.screenshot(). Use the same scope for the reference image and each later run. See the Puppeteer screenshots guide and the Page.screenshot() API reference for details supported by your installed version.
Viewport screenshot
Capture the visible viewport when the test concerns what a user sees in the current screen. Set a fixed viewport before navigation or capture so layout breakpoints and wrapping remain comparable.
Full-page screenshot
Set fullPage: true when the behavior under test includes the page’s full scrollable height, such as below-the-fold layout. It changes the capture scope, so do not compare a full-page image with a viewport-only baseline. Confirm the exact semantics in the API reference for your installed Puppeteer version.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Element screenshot
Use ElementHandle.screenshot() to focus on a component rather than unrelated page content. Puppeteer’s guide notes that capturing an element can scroll it into view. That scroll may affect sticky headers, lazy-loaded content, or other state, so make sure the resulting state is intentional and repeatable.
Stabilize the page before capturing
Two calls with identical screenshot options can still produce different pixels if the environment or page changes. Keep the following consistent between baseline creation and later runs:
- Browser and runtime: use the same browser build and test runtime.
- Geometry and scale: fix the viewport dimensions and device scale factor.
- Page inputs: control application data, account state, locale, and other inputs that affect rendering.
- Resources: ensure the same fonts, images, stylesheets, and other assets have loaded.
- UI state: set the same route, interactions, dialogs, and other visible state.
- Readiness: wait for an application-specific condition that means the content under test is ready.
Puppeteer’s guide demonstrates networkidle2 in an example, but network idleness is not a universal signal that a dynamic interface has visually settled. Pages may keep making requests or update after their network becomes quiet. Prefer an explicit condition for the state your test needs; use a delay only when a known, deliberate transition requires it.

Run a repeatable Puppeteer capture
This example fixes the viewport, waits for a page-specific readiness marker, and captures the viewport. Replace the URL and selector with the route and condition that represent the state under test. Use the same browser and settings when saving the baseline and when producing later test images.
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1280, height: 800 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1,
});
await page.goto('https://example.com/dashboard', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded',
});
await page.waitForSelector('[data-test="dashboard-ready"]', {
visible: true,
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'dashboard.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
The readiness selector is an example, not a built-in Puppeteer convention: add a marker or wait condition that reflects the application state your test actually needs. For a full-page capture, use the same options on both runs and add fullPage: true. For a component, select its handle and use its screenshot method instead. Check the installed Puppeteer API reference before relying on options, since support and exact behavior are version-dependent.

Separate capture from visual comparison
Puppeteer documents how to capture images; its screenshot call does not itself compare a new image with a baseline or define a visual-diff policy. Keep the capture step and comparison step explicit in your test setup.
Keep Puppeteer and add a comparison step
If your project already uses Puppeteer, save captures with stable names and compare them with your team’s chosen image-diff or review process. Keep browser version, capture scope, viewport, scale, and test data aligned across baseline and current images; otherwise a difference may reflect setup rather than a product change.

Consider a framework with documented screenshot assertions
Playwright Test is a separate framework, not a Puppeteer feature. Its documentation describes screenshot assertions that retry until two consecutive screenshots match and compare the result against a baseline. See the Playwright visual comparisons documentation and PageAssertions API if you are evaluating a different test stack.

Consider hosted review for team workflows
Percy documents a Playwright integration with named snapshots, full-page capture, and controls for dynamic regions. That is a hosted review example for Playwright; the cited documentation does not establish a Puppeteer integration. Confirm compatibility and current commercial terms before choosing a hosted service. See Percy’s Playwright integration documentation.

Troubleshoot inconsistent screenshots
- Text wraps differently: check viewport width, device scale, font availability, and whether the same font files finished loading.
- Images or sections are missing: wait for the relevant assets or application state rather than assuming navigation completion means the page is visually complete. Lazy-loaded content may need to be brought into view.
- Sticky elements move: an element screenshot may scroll its target into view. Test whether that scroll changes the sticky layout, and use a capture scope and state appropriate to the behavior being tested.
- Captures differ despite a quiet network: a dynamic page can continue rendering or updating after network activity settles. Wait for a specific ready marker or state transition rather than treating network idle as a guarantee.
- Unexpected large visual diffs: confirm the baseline and current run use the same browser build, viewport, scale, capture scope, page data, and visible UI state.
- An option is rejected or behaves differently: verify it against the API reference matching the installed Puppeteer version instead of assuming current live documentation describes an older installation.

If you need an image from a URL without maintaining a Puppeteer capture script, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API accepts one GET request and returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/dashboard -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer compare screenshots with a baseline automatically?
No. Puppeteer’s documented screenshot methods capture images; baseline comparison is a separate part of the test workflow.
Should I use a full-page screenshot for every visual test?
No. Use full-page capture only when the full scrollable layout is under test; otherwise choose the viewport or a specific element.
