For website screenshots plus visual-regression checks, start with Playwright Test. Choose Cypress when screenshots belong inside application tests and CI artifacts, Selenium when your project already depends on WebDriver, or keep Puppeteer for direct capture scripts that already meet your needs. For screenshots without running your own browser, ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try: it removes common consent banners and popups before capture, and failed or unsuitable captures are not billed.
Which Puppeteer alternative fits your screenshot workflow?
There is no evidence-based speed ranking among these tools. The practical choice depends on whether you need a test runner, visual comparisons, a particular browser automation ecosystem, or simply a screenshot from code.
| Tool | Best fit | Screenshot and regression capabilities |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | API-based capture without managing a browser | One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It includes consent-banner and popup cleanup, configurable capture options, and an MCP server for AI agents. See ScreenshotNeo. |
| Playwright | Capture combined with visual-regression testing | Viewport, element, and full-page screenshots; Playwright Test can generate and compare screenshot baselines. |
| Cypress | Screenshots produced by application tests and CI runs | Manual screenshots in interactive and run modes; automatic failure screenshots in cypress run. Full-page capture scrolls and stitches. |
| Selenium | Projects organized around WebDriver and its browser integrations | The reviewed official documentation establishes WebDriver and browser support, but not detailed screenshot-specific behavior or visual-regression features. |
| Puppeteer | Existing Node.js scripts needing direct browser capture | Page.screenshot() and element-level screenshots are documented capabilities; switching is unnecessary if they fit your workflow. |

Playwright: best starting point for screenshot regression testing
Playwright is a strong first evaluation when you need both automated capture and checks that a page still looks like a saved reference. Its screenshot API supports viewport captures, selected elements, and full pages, with PNG, JPEG, and WebP options. Playwright Test adds toHaveScreenshot(): the first run creates a reference image, and later runs compare against it. See the Playwright screenshot documentation and visual comparisons documentation.
For example, a test can capture a full page and compare it with a stored baseline:
#1 Best Overall
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png', { fullPage: true });
});
The baseline is meaningful only relative to a consistent rendering environment. Playwright warns that the host operating system, browser version, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. Run baseline creation and comparison under the same environment; otherwise, visual differences may reflect the machine rather than a website change.
Cypress: useful when capture belongs to application tests
Cypress supports manual screenshots in both interactive and run modes, and can automatically capture a screenshot after a test failure during cypress run. Failure screenshots are not automatic in cypress open. By default, screenshots are saved in cypress/screenshots; Cypress Cloud is documented as an option to store, view, and share run artifacts. See the Cypress screenshots and videos guide.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The Cypress screenshot API documents viewport, full-page, runner, clipped, and element screenshots. Full-page capture works by scrolling and stitching the resulting images, so fixed or sticky elements may appear more than once. That behavior matters when capturing pages with persistent navigation, cookie controls, or floating buttons.
Selenium: choose it for WebDriver alignment
Selenium is a reasonable alternative when your automation is already structured around WebDriver or when its documented browser integrations are a requirement. Its official pages cover WebDriver and supported browsers. The sources cited here do not establish comparative screenshot behavior, visual-regression facilities, image consistency, ease of use, or performance, so those should be evaluated against your own requirements rather than assumed.
When Puppeteer is still the right answer
Puppeteer remains a direct option for Node-oriented scripts that need browser screenshots. Its documentation covers Page.screenshot() and element screenshots, including bringing a hidden element into view before capturing it. If those APIs solve the problem, there is no inherent need to migrate. See the Puppeteer screenshot guide.

Switch when a specific need justifies the added migration work: for example, Playwright Test’s visual assertions, Cypress’s test-failure artifact workflow, or Selenium’s WebDriver alignment. A change of framework alone does not guarantee faster or more accurate screenshots.
How to choose and keep captures comparable
- Need screenshot baselines and visual assertions: evaluate Playwright Test.
- Need failure images attached to application-test runs: evaluate Cypress, noting the difference between
cypress runandcypress open. - Already use WebDriver: include Selenium, then verify the screenshot behavior and comparison workflow your project requires.
- Have a working Node capture script: keep Puppeteer unless a concrete workflow gap calls for a change.
- Want capture without hosting or operating the browser yourself: consider a screenshot API such as ScreenshotNeo. A hosted browser-execution service such as Browserless is an adjacent infrastructure option, but the cited material does not establish its screenshot feature set, pricing, or limits.
For visual regression, pin the browser and operating environment used for both reference creation and comparison. Keep the target page state stable as well: differences in content or timing can create image changes unrelated to layout. These are practical controls, not guarantees that every screenshot will be identical.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request can return an image or PDF, without setting up a browser automation runtime. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
Example cURL request (replace the URL with the page you want to capture):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer support full-page and element screenshots?
Yes. Puppeteer’s documented screenshot API supports page and element capture; the guide also describes bringing a hidden element into view before capturing it.
Can Cypress capture test-failure screenshots in interactive mode?
Automatic screenshots after failures apply to cypress run, not cypress open. Cypress also supports manually requested screenshots in both modes.
Why can a visual screenshot test fail on a different machine?
Rendering can vary with the operating system, browser version, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Keep baseline and comparison runs in the same environment.
