There is no single “best” PS5 configuration. The right settings depend on whether you want smoother motion, lower input lag, accurate HDR, clearer sound, easier controls, or lower power use—and on what your TV or monitor, HDMI connection, game, audio device, and PS5 model support. Start at Settings, change only the options that match your goal, and undo a change if it causes flicker, missing output, or unexpected game behavior.
This guide gives the exact PS5 menu paths, explains the trade-offs, and links to Sony’s current support instructions for each feature.

What PS5 settings should I change first?
Before changing anything, identify the outcome you want. A 120 Hz display mode can make supported games feel smoother, but it cannot make every game render at 120 frames per second. HDR can improve supported content when calibrated to your screen, while forcing HDR on unsupported content changes how SDR games and apps are displayed. VRR can smooth frame-rate fluctuations on a compatible display, but Sony notes that results vary by television and game.
| Goal | Settings to check | What must be compatible | Main trade-off or recovery action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smoother motion | 120 Hz Output, VRR | Display, correct HDMI path, and game | Disable 120 Hz or unsupported-game VRR if output problems or unusual behavior appear |
| Lower latency | ALLM and, where available, VRR | TV with a compatible low-latency or gaming mode | VRR can still trigger low-latency mode even when ALLM is Off |
| HDR image quality | HDR mode and Adjust HDR | HDR-capable display and supported content | Always On converts SDR; On When Supported leaves unsupported content in SDR |
| Clearer sound | Audio Output and 3D Audio (TV) | Your TV speakers, headset, or other connected device | 3D audio needs a room measurement and a listening comparison |
| Easier controls or reading | Accessibility settings | Your needs and the game’s own accessibility support | These improve usability, not frame rate or image quality |
| Lower electricity use | Power Saver for supported games | A game that supports the feature | Performance may be scaled back; VR and other gameplay features may be unavailable or limited |
Sony’s PS5 feature overview and resolution guide both emphasize that these functions depend on the display and software, so treat compatibility as a prerequisite rather than a promise.

How to find the PS5 screen and video settings
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Make one change at a time, return to your game, and check the result. If the screen goes blank, wait for the console’s automatic recovery prompt or reconnect the display and select a known-good output.
Resolution: leave Automatic unless you have a reason to override it
Resolution controls the output format sent to the display. Automatic lets the PS5 negotiate a supported mode and is the sensible starting point for most systems. Manually selecting a lower or different resolution can help diagnose an incompatibility, but it is not inherently sharper or faster.
Some compatible televisions and monitors offer a 1440p Output test and mode. It can be useful when a display is designed around 1440p, but it is not universally better than 4K. Choose it only when your screen supports the mode and the resulting image looks and behaves as expected. Sony documents resolution and compatibility details in its PS5 4K resolution guide.
120 Hz Output: enable the display mode, not a guaranteed frame rate
Turn on 120 Hz Output when both the display and the game support 120 Hz. The setting allows the console to send a 120 Hz signal; the game still has to provide a 120-fps or 120-Hz mode. Many games remain at their own capped frame rate, so enabling this option does not automatically double performance.
If a supported game produces a faulty picture or another video-output problem on your monitor or television, Sony’s guidance is to disable 120 Hz Output and test again. Check the display’s own gaming or high-refresh setting and the HDMI input label as well. Use the HDMI cable supplied with the console before buying a replacement; a different cable is a troubleshooting step only when the existing signal path cannot carry the required mode.
VRR: smooth fluctuations when the whole chain supports it
Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) synchronizes the display’s refresh timing with the game’s changing frame rate. Enable Apply to Unsupported Games only as an experiment: Sony says results vary with the TV and game, and an unsupported title can show unexpected behavior. If that happens, turn the option off and leave VRR enabled only for games that advertise support.
VRR requires a compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR display and a compatible game. The feature can also depend on which HDMI port you use and on the cable path between the PS5 and screen. If the display has a separate VRR or gaming-mode switch, enable that on the display as well. A screen that lacks VRR hardware cannot gain the feature through a PS5 menu setting.

ALLM: let the TV request low-latency mode
ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) asks a compatible television to switch to its low-latency or game mode while you play. It is not present on every HDMI 2.1 television, and the TV’s own firmware and input settings matter.
There is an important interaction with VRR: Sony notes that VRR output can cause the television to enter low-latency mode even when ALLM is set to Off. To prevent that behavior completely, disable VRR. Conversely, turning ALLM on cannot force a display that does not support it to change modes.
Video Transfer Rate: the first fix for 4K flicker
If a 4K picture flickers, drops out, or repeatedly renegotiates, reduce Video Transfer Rate under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Sony specifically documents lowering this value as a remedy for 4K flicker. Test after each change; a lower transfer rate can reduce the available signal combination, so restore the previous value if the problem was caused by another part of the setup.
- Confirm the PS5 is connected directly to the display while troubleshooting rather than through an unverified receiver, switch, or capture device.
- Try the HDMI port identified by the display manufacturer for 4K, 120 Hz, or VRR.
- Reconnect the bundled HDMI cable firmly at both ends and test with 120 Hz and VRR temporarily disabled.
- Once the picture is stable, re-enable one feature at a time to identify the combination that causes the fault.
Best HDR settings for PS5
Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR. HDR is not a universal “brighter is better” switch: the result depends on the actual display, its picture mode, and whether the game or app provides HDR content.

Choose between Always On and On When Supported
Always On outputs HDR for all content, converting games and apps that were authored in SDR. This can give a consistent HDR signal to a display, but the converted image may not match the creator’s intended SDR appearance.
On When Supported sends HDR only when the game or app supports it and leaves unsupported content in SDR. This is the more conservative choice when you want SDR titles to remain in their native range. Neither mode is universally correct; choose based on how your display handles HDR and how you prefer SDR games to look.
Run Adjust HDR on the screen you actually use
Select Adjust HDR and follow the three calibration screens while viewing the same television or monitor used for play. Adjust the symbols until Sony’s instructions indicate the correct visibility, then save the result. If you move the console to another display, repeat the process because the appropriate level depends on that screen.

For additional display-side accuracy, select the television’s game or HDR picture mode according to its manual and disable any picture processing that adds visible delay or changes the test image unpredictably. The PS5 calibration cannot compensate for a display that is not HDR-capable or for an incorrect HDMI input mode. Sony’s step-by-step instructions are in How to enable HDR on a PS5 console.
How do I make PS5 audio sound better?
Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the device you actually use. Confirm the output device, audio format, and volume controls before changing surround or 3D options. The available controls depend on whether sound is going to TV speakers, a headset, an AV receiver, or another connected device; Sony lists the device-specific choices in How to change audio settings on PS5 consoles.
TV speakers: measure 3D audio from your normal seat
For television speakers, open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV). Sit in your usual play position, keep the wireless controller at the height and angle you normally hold it, and follow the on-screen room-measurement steps using the controller microphone. When measurement finishes, compare the stereo and 3D audio samples and keep the one that sounds more natural in your room.
Room layout, speaker placement, viewing distance, and television processing all affect the result. If voices become hollow or effects lose clarity, repeat the measurement from the normal seat or switch back to stereo. Sony’s complete procedure appears in How to set up 3D audio on PS5 consoles.
Headphones and headsets: optional, device-dependent
A headset is not required for better PS5 audio. If you use one, connect it, select it under Audio Output, and adjust the device and chat-volume controls available for that model. Features such as microphone monitoring, surround processing, wireless modes, and equalization depend on the connected headset; do not enable a processing mode that duplicates a sound effect already applied by the headset or television.

Accessibility settings that improve usability
Accessibility options are not performance tweaks. They can make controls, text, captions, chat, and audio workable for a particular player without changing the game’s frame rate. Open Settings > Accessibility and enable only the controls you need. Sony groups controller, display and text, screen reader, captions, chat transcription, and audio options in its PS5 accessibility settings guide.

Controller and button changes
Use controller customization when a required button is difficult to reach or a different layout reduces strain. After remapping, test a menu, a regular game section, and any quick-time or simultaneous-button action. Keep a note of the original mapping so you can restore it quickly if a game’s on-screen prompts become confusing.
Display, text, zoom, and screen reader
Display and text controls can enlarge or improve the legibility of menus. Zoom is useful for temporarily examining a small element, while the screen reader can speak interface text and navigation. Turn each feature on from Accessibility, try it in the home screen, and adjust or disable it if it interferes with a game’s own narration.

Captions and chat transcription can make spoken dialogue or voice communication readable. Mono audio sends both channels to both ears, which can help when you listen with one ear or have unequal hearing. Individual games may provide their own subtitle size, speaker labels, color, contrast, and audio-balance controls; check the game’s PlayStation game hub for its supported accessibility features instead of assuming the console-wide option covers every in-game screen.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Power settings: choose battery and electricity savings deliberately
Power-saving options involve a direct performance trade-off. For supported games, Power Saver can scale performance back to reduce consumption. Sony warns that VR may be unavailable and that other gameplay features can be limited when this mode is active. It is therefore unsuitable when your priority is maximum frame rate or visual effects.
Use Power Saver when longer play time or lower energy use matters more than peak performance, and turn it off before troubleshooting a game that suddenly lacks a performance option. Rest-mode behavior is configured separately under Settings > System > Power Saving; those timers and network or USB options do not make an active game run faster or slower. Sony’s power menu details are in How to change power-saving settings on PlayStation consoles.
How to undo a setting safely
- Write down the original value before changing a video, HDR, audio, or power option.
- Change one setting only, then launch the same game or scene so you can identify its effect.
- If the image flickers or disappears, return to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and select the prior resolution, disable 120 Hz or VRR, or lower Video Transfer Rate.
- If unsupported games behave oddly with VRR, turn off Apply to Unsupported Games while leaving ordinary VRR enabled for supported titles.
- If HDR looks washed out, too dark, or unnaturally bright, switch from Always On to On When Supported (or vice versa) and run Adjust HDR again on the same display.
- If sound becomes less clear, repeat the TV-speaker measurement, compare stereo with 3D audio, or restore the previous output device and format.
- If controls or narration become confusing, return to Accessibility and restore the original controller, display, or reader option; then check the game’s own settings separately.
- After recovery, re-enable desired features one at a time. This isolates whether the problem is the game, the display input, the cable path, or a combination of settings.
A practical setup sequence for a new TV or monitor
- Connect the PS5 directly to the display with the HDMI cable supplied with the console and select the display’s recommended high-bandwidth gaming input.
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output; leave Resolution on Automatic, then verify the displayed information and test 1440p only if the screen is designed for it.
- Enable 120 Hz Output only when the display and the game support it. Test a known compatible game before changing additional options.
- Enable VRR on both the display and PS5 when supported. Leave Apply to Unsupported Games off until you have a reason to test it.
- Set ALLM according to whether you want the television to request its low-latency mode automatically, remembering that VRR can trigger that mode independently.
- Choose HDR mode under Video Output, then run Adjust HDR with the display in the picture mode you will use for games.
- Configure Settings > Sound > Audio Output. For TV speakers, complete the 3D Audio (TV) measurement and compare it with stereo; for a headset, select the connected device and test chat and game volume.
- Open Accessibility and enable any controller, text, caption, screen-reader, transcription, or mono-audio options that address a specific need.
- Leave Power Saver off when maximum performance is the priority; use it for supported games only when reduced consumption is worth the possible loss of VR or other features.
When a “better” setting makes the experience worse
A setting can be correct in theory and still be wrong for your equipment. A 120 Hz mode may expose a weak HDMI connection; VRR may behave differently across games; Always On HDR may make SDR content look unlike its original presentation; and 3D audio may sound less natural in a room with reflective surfaces. Treat the first visible problem as useful evidence rather than forcing every feature to remain enabled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Flicker or intermittent black screen: reduce Video Transfer Rate, check the correct HDMI port, and test with 120 Hz and VRR off.
- No 120 Hz option in a game: verify that the game supports the mode, the display is in its high-refresh setting, and the PS5 is using a compatible HDMI path. The console setting alone cannot add a game mode.
- Unexpected behavior in an older or unsupported game: disable Apply VRR to Unsupported Games.
- HDR looks wrong only in SDR titles: use On When Supported or recalibrate Adjust HDR rather than assuming the display is defective.
- TV audio sounds hollow after enabling 3D: repeat the room measurement from the normal seat and compare stereo before deciding which mode to keep.
- Game performance drops while saving power: disable Power Saver and check whether the game’s performance options return.
These fallbacks preserve a stable, usable console. The best PS5 settings are the ones your complete setup can sustain without introducing a new problem.
