Best PS5 Settings for Squad (Alpha Guide): Audio, Aim and Performance Options

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Use Squad’s default graphics configuration, keep the PS5 and display in their normal low-latency gaming setup, and tune controls and sound in Practice Mode before joining a match. Offworld Industries currently targets 4K using dynamic-resolution upscaling at 60 FPS on PS5, but the console build is still described as pre-release/alpha and that figure is a target awaiting final testing, not a launch guarantee. There is no announced Performance/Quality selector.

The most useful setup therefore balances three things: responsive turning and fine aim, enough audio detail to separate footsteps and gunfire from explosions, and stable frame pacing. Start from defaults, change one setting at a time, and keep notes so a later alpha update does not leave you guessing.

What is confirmed for Squad on PS5

Offworld Industries published its current console information on October 16, 2026. Several features are confirmed, while exact slider values and measured launch performance are not yet public.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Area Confirmed information What you should do now
Resolution and frame rate Current target is 4K with dynamic-resolution upscaling at 60 FPS. Treat 60 FPS as a goal pending final testing; use a low-latency display setup rather than chasing an unannounced mode.
Graphics modes No separate Performance and Quality modes are announced. Leave the game’s default graphics configuration in place during the alpha period.
Aim assistance Offworld says the console version includes aim assist. Begin with default stick sensitivity, then tune in Practice Mode.
Controls The console version has a console-specific control scheme. The PlayStation listing confirms adjustable stick sensitivity and stick inversion. Adjust one axis at a time and leave inversion off unless you already use inverted sticks.
Audio Individual volume controls and 3D Audio are listed. 3D Audio is described as allowing sounds to be heard from all around the player. Build a voice-and-footstep mix before public matches.
Practice Practice Mode, control reminders, and tutorial reminders are listed. Use Practice Mode to check aim, headset balance, microphone level, and channel clarity.
Match size Console PvP is listed for up to 100 players; Fireteam PvE is listed for five players. Expect a busy soundscape in large PvP battles and calibrate voice volume accordingly.

Offworld has not published final in-game slider numbers, measured frame-rate behavior, a launch graphics menu, or a confirmed VRR/120 Hz mode. Any numeric preset found elsewhere should be treated as an individual’s starting point, not an official Squad setting.

Recommended baseline before your first match

  1. Keep the game’s graphics settings at their default. The announced design has no Performance/Quality toggle to choose, and the build may change during testing.
  2. Put your television or monitor in its normal low-latency gaming configuration. Disable processing that adds visible delay, but do not assume this creates a special Squad performance mode.
  3. Leave stick inversion disabled unless you routinely play with an inverted vertical axis.
  4. Start at default sensitivity. Make your first adjustments only after you can describe a specific problem, such as overshooting a small correction.
  5. Enable your preferred headphone output and 3D Audio path in the PS5 and then balance Squad’s individual volumes.
  6. Run a complete Practice Mode check. Verify movement, aim assist, vibration, adaptive triggers, microphone level, and each voice channel before entering a public server.

Graphics and performance settings

What the 4K/60 target means

Offworld’s wording is precise: the current PS5 target is 4K using dynamic-resolution upscaling at 60 FPS. Dynamic resolution can change internal rendering resolution to protect performance, so the target does not promise native 4K in every scene. It also is not a measured launch result. Final details are expected closer to release after testing.

Because the build is alpha, consistency matters more than trying to force an unofficial visual preset. Keep the default game configuration unless a future patch adds documented choices. Record the build number and the date whenever you compare settings; an update can change image quality or frame pacing without changing your menu choices.

Display-side choices

Use the display’s ordinary low-latency gaming setup. If your screen offers VRR or a 120 Hz input mode, those are reasonable PS5-level options to evaluate, but Squad’s FAQ has not confirmed a final VRR mode or a requirement for 120 Hz output. Enable them only if your display and console already support them reliably, and compare the result in the same Practice Mode scene.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not describe a 120 Hz setting as a 120-FPS Squad mode. The only published game target is 60 FPS. A 120 Hz display may still be useful for its normal low-latency behavior, but the game may not output at that rate.

How to judge performance without inventing a benchmark

  • Look for uneven camera motion while turning, not just a single momentary drop.
  • Compare a quiet Practice Mode area with a crowded firefight; dynamic resolution and frame pacing can behave differently under load.
  • Keep the display, field of view, audio devices, and network conditions the same between comparisons.
  • Change one option only, and revert it if the image becomes less clear or motion feels less stable.

Until Offworld publishes measured launch behavior, report observations as observations rather than guarantees. For example, “this patch felt steadier in Practice Mode” is appropriately limited; “PS5 always holds 60 FPS” is not supported by the current information.

Best Squad PS5 aim sensitivity and controls

Start with the default and tune in Practice Mode

Squad includes console aim assist, and Offworld says the control scheme was designed for console rather than copied directly from PC. That means a sensitivity value that feels familiar in another shooter may not transfer cleanly. Begin with the shipped default, then use Practice Mode to test two movements:

  • Large turns: rotate toward a target or a new direction without lifting the stick repeatedly.
  • Small corrections: track a target and stop the reticle on a precise point without wobbling past it.

Increase sensitivity only until large turns are controllable. If your reticle repeatedly passes the target during small corrections, reduce sensitivity. Change horizontal and vertical sensitivity separately if the menu exposes both; otherwise make one change, test it, and write down the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A symptom-based tuning table

What you feel First adjustment Why
You cannot turn quickly enough to follow a nearby threat. Raise sensitivity slightly. Faster rotation gives you more camera movement per stick input.
You consistently sweep past a target. Lower sensitivity slightly. Smaller camera movement makes fine corrections easier.
Horizontal tracking is comfortable but vertical movement is twitchy. Lower only the vertical axis, if available. Separate axes let you preserve the control that already works.
Aim feels different after changing a system setting or update. Return to the default and recalibrate in Practice Mode. Alpha patches can alter feel even when a saved number remains unchanged.

These are tuning directions, not developer-published numeric presets. There is no confirmed “best” sensitivity number for every player, display, or controller.

Inversion, vibration, and adaptive triggers

Disable stick inversion unless you already use an inverted layout. Switching convention during a stressful match makes vertical corrections harder, while experienced inverted-stick players should keep their established preference.

If vibration or adaptive trigger resistance distracts you from fine aim, the PlayStation listing confirms that Squad can be played without either. Test both states in Practice Mode. Trigger resistance may provide tactile feedback, but removing it can make repeated firing or aiming feel more consistent for players who find the resistance fatiguing.

How to hear footsteps and gunfire on PS5

Use 3D Audio as the starting point

The PS5 listing confirms individual volume controls and 3D Audio, described as output that lets sounds be heard from all around you. Directional information is most useful when the mix leaves enough space for quiet cues, so start by making speech intelligible and then adjust effects around it rather than simply raising every slider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
  2. Choose the actual output device you use for Squad and set headphone output as needed.
  3. Enable the 3D Audio path you prefer, then enter Practice Mode to listen for front, rear, and side movement.
  4. In Squad, lower music or other nonessential sounds if they mask footsteps. Keep effects high enough to hear gunfire and environmental cues.
  5. Raise voice chat until a squadmate remains understandable during a loud engagement.

There is no published universal slider combination. Headphones, hearing profile, room noise, and personal sensitivity all change the result, so use the same Practice Mode test each time you make an adjustment.

Try the Shooter EQ preset when using a compatible Sony headset

Sony’s current PS5 support documentation describes the Shooter EQ preset as sound that emphasizes shooting and footsteps during gameplay. Use it as a starting point on a compatible Sony headset, including the optional PULSE 3D wireless headset named in Sony’s documentation. If explosions become harsh or voices recede, reduce bass or switch back to a flatter profile. The preset is an aid, not a guarantee that every player’s hearing or headset will benefit from it.

Keep the mix usable in a 100-player battle

Large console PvP matches can contain overlapping weapons, vehicles, and conversations. Do not solve masking by pushing every channel to maximum; that can make the mix tiring and still leave speech unclear. Instead, preserve a clear voice channel, use the least bass-heavy profile that keeps gunfire identifiable, and test at the volume you can sustain for a full match.

How to make Squad voice chat clearer

Offworld describes communication as central to the Squad experience. The console information specifically calls out local, squad, and command communication. Before matchmaking, make sure you can hear the people who matter for your role and that your microphone is not competing with the game mix.

  1. Connect the headset or microphone you will actually use in matches.
  2. In Settings > Sound > Audio Output, confirm the selected output device and headphone output.
  3. In Practice Mode, speak at your normal volume and check that your microphone does not clip or disappear when you turn your head.
  4. Use Squad’s individual volume controls to keep voice above music and nonessential ambience.
  5. Check local, squad, and command channels one at a time. Do not mute a channel accidentally while troubleshooting another.
  6. Ask a practice partner to confirm that your words are clear during a simulated firefight, then make only one volume change.

If a channel sounds crowded, lowering the game sounds that mask speech is usually more useful than making every voice slider louder. Keep a comfortable overall volume so a sudden gunshot does not force you to remove your headset.

Practice Mode calibration routine

Practice Mode is the safest place to create a repeatable baseline. Run this sequence after installing the game, after a control change, and after a substantial alpha update.

  1. Movement: walk, sprint, crouch, and turn in both directions. Confirm that your preferred inversion and sensitivity behave consistently.
  2. Aim: perform a slow track, a rapid turn, and a stop on a small target. Decide whether the problem is speed or overshoot before changing a value.
  3. Aim assist: observe how the reticle behaves around targets without assuming it will replace manual tracking. Keep the setting that lets you make deliberate corrections.
  4. Triggers and vibration: play briefly with each enabled and disabled, then keep the state that produces the least distraction.
  5. Audio: walk around sound sources and identify front, rear, and side cues. Check that effects do not bury speech.
  6. Microphone: test your normal speaking distance and verify that voice chat remains intelligible while effects play.
  7. Reminders: use the control and tutorial reminders when a patch changes a button or interaction.

Write down your final choices in a note with the date and game version. This is especially useful while the console build remains in alpha.

Accessibility options worth checking

Sony documents controller remapping at Settings > Accessibility > Controllers. Remapping can help when a default button placement causes strain or when a player needs a different reach pattern. Make one remap at a time and rehearse it in Practice Mode so muscle memory does not conflict with the new layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sony also documents chat transcription for supported games. If your setup or hearing needs make spoken communication difficult, check whether the feature is available for the current Squad build and confirm how it interacts with your chosen channels.

For headphones, Sony places mono audio under Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Mono sends the same signal to both earcups and can help listeners who need identical information on each side. It removes left/right separation, however, so stereo or 3D output is preferable when directional footsteps and gunfire are your priority.

Settings by priority

Your priority Starting profile What to monitor
Fast reactions Default graphics, low-latency display setup, default sensitivity, then a small sensitivity increase if turns feel slow. Overshoot during small corrections and uneven camera motion.
Footstep information 3D Audio, a compatible Shooter EQ starting point, restrained bass, and music below voice and effects. Whether explosions mask quiet movement or voices.
Team leadership Voice above music, every required channel audible, microphone checked in Practice Mode. Clipping, accidental muting, and speech lost during firefights.
Reduced sensory load Disable vibration or adaptive triggers if they distract you; use controller remapping where needed. Comfort over a full session, not just the first few minutes.
Equal signal in both ears Mono audio if required by your hearing setup. Loss of left/right positional separation.

Common problems and fixes

The game looks soft or changes sharpness

Dynamic-resolution upscaling is part of the current 4K/60 target, so image sharpness may vary with scene load. Keep the default graphics configuration and compare the same location after an update. Do not assume a softer image means a hidden Quality mode is available.

Turning is slow, but aiming is accurate

Raise sensitivity in a small step and repeat the large-turn and small-correction tests. If the reticle begins to overshoot, return to the previous value; fast turning is not an improvement if it destroys precise tracking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Footsteps disappear under explosions

Reduce bass or loud nonessential channels, keep 3D Audio enabled if it helps your setup, and make sure voice volume is not competing with effects. Test the Shooter EQ preset only as a starting point, then revert if it makes explosions harsher.

Squadmates are difficult to understand

Confirm the PS5 output device at Settings > Sound > Audio Output, raise voice relative to music, and check local, squad, and command channels separately. Ask a teammate to verify your microphone level instead of judging it only from your own headset.

A new patch changed the feel

Reset to defaults, note the new build date, and run the full Practice Mode routine again. Alpha settings and performance targets can change before release.

What to revisit when the final build arrives

Recheck the official console FAQ and in-game menus after launch. The items most likely to require a fresh decision are the measured frame-rate behavior, final graphics options, VRR support, 120 Hz output behavior, and any new sensitivity or audio sliders. Until those details are published, the reliable approach is a default graphics baseline, deliberate one-axis-at-a-time aim tuning, and an audio mix that protects footsteps and team communication.
