Best PS5 Settings for Resident Evil 4 Remake: HDR, VRR, Performance and Resolution Modes

For most players on the original PS5, start with Performance Mode, enable PS5 VRR on a compatible display, and leave ray tracing off. That combination keeps motion closest to 60 frames per second. On PS5 Pro, use Resolution Mode at 60 Hz for the best balance of image quality and consistency, or choose one of the 120 Hz modes only if you have a 120 Hz VRR display.

HDR should be calibrated on your own television rather than copied from a universal slider guide. Set the brightest calibration symbol just below clipping while preserving visible shadow detail. Turn chromatic aberration and lens distortion off if you want a cleaner, sharper-looking image; depth of field, hair strands, field of view and camera wobble are personal choices.

Recommended presets at a glance

Resident Evil 4 Remake offers a meaningful choice between steadier motion and a higher-resolution presentation. The right setting depends on your console, display refresh rate and tolerance for ray-tracing frame-rate drops.

Platform and mode Measured or reported behavior Image and effects Best use
Base PS5 Performance Mode Approximately 55–60 fps in PSFoundry’s 2026 summary Frame-rate-focused presentation; ray tracing can be left off or enabled as an option Most consistent motion on a 60 Hz display
Base PS5 Resolution Mode with ray tracing Approximately 40–60 fps in PSFoundry’s 2026 summary Sharper checkerboard 4K target with ray-traced reflections and lighting; dynamic resolution can fall in busy scenes Players who value detail and RT more than even frame pacing
PS5 Pro Resolution Mode at 60 Hz Locked 60 fps at 4K checkerboard in PSFoundry’s 2026 summary Ray tracing available Best overall PS5 Pro balance
PS5 Pro Performance Mode at 120 Hz Typically 85–105 fps in PSFoundry’s 2026 summary High-refresh performance presentation 120 Hz VRR displays and players prioritizing responsiveness
PS5 Pro Resolution Mode at 120 Hz with ray tracing Typically 70–90 fps in PSFoundry’s 2026 summary Higher-resolution 120 Hz presentation with RT 120 Hz VRR displays when you want both detail and smoother motion than 60 fps

Those frame-rate figures are observations from the cited testing, not guarantees for every scene, firmware version or display. VRR can smooth variation inside a display’s operating range, but it cannot make a demanding mode exceed its frame rate or hide drops below the display’s VRR floor.

How the graphics modes affect the game

Performance Mode on the base PS5

Performance Mode reduces the rendering burden so the game can stay near 60 fps. PSFoundry reports roughly 55–60 fps on the base PS5, while TechRadar describes it as the frame-rate-friendly option. Small variations are far less distracting during combat, quick camera turns and traversal than the larger swings possible in a ray-traced resolution configuration.

Start here if you are sensitive to judder, play on a 60 Hz television, or want the most predictable response from aiming and movement. You can still test ray tracing in this mode, but disabling it gives the cleanest frame pacing.

Resolution Mode on the base PS5

Resolution Mode aims for a sharper checkerboard 4K image. TechRadar notes that dynamic resolution may reduce in busy scenes, so the image is not locked to one pixel count at all times. The extra detail is easiest to notice on a large 4K screen when the camera is still or moving slowly.

Resolution Mode becomes substantially more demanding when ray tracing is enabled. PSFoundry’s 2026 summary places that combination around 40–60 fps, a range that can move below the operating window of some VRR televisions. Choose it for visual detail and RT reflections only when you accept uneven motion.

PS5 Pro modes

The PS5 Pro has more headroom. At 60 Hz, Resolution Mode is reported as locked at 60 fps with a 4K checkerboard presentation and ray tracing available, making it the strongest general-purpose choice for a Pro connected to a normal 60 Hz or 60 Hz-capable display.

  • 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
  • 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.

With a 120 Hz VRR display, Pro Performance Mode typically runs at 85–105 fps. Pro Resolution Mode with ray tracing typically runs at 70–90 fps. Both modes need a display capable of accepting a 120 Hz VRR signal; a 60 Hz panel cannot show their intended high-refresh benefit.

Set up the base PS5

  1. Open Settings on the PS5 home screen.
  2. Choose Screen and Video, then Video Output.
  3. Set VRR to Automatic if your television or monitor supports VRR.
  4. Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic. This does not make a 60 Hz display run at 120 Hz, but it allows a compatible display to use the higher refresh modes offered by the console and game.
  5. Set HDR to On When Supported when the display has a properly calibrated HDR game mode. Use the PS5’s Adjust HDR utility as a starting point, then perform the in-game calibration described below.
  6. Launch Resident Evil 4 Remake and open its display or graphics options. Select Performance Mode first. Leave ray tracing off for the most even frame pacing.

Play for several minutes in a combat area and in a darker interior before changing anything else. This gives you a useful baseline for judging motion, shadow detail and reconstruction artifacts rather than changing several variables at once.

When to switch the base PS5 to Resolution Mode

Choose Resolution Mode when fine geometry, distant details and a sharper checkerboard 4K image matter more to you than perfectly even motion. If you also enable ray tracing, expect the 40–60 fps behavior reported by PSFoundry. VRR may soften the visible changes, but it cannot guarantee a smooth result when the frame rate drops below your display’s VRR floor.

For a 60 Hz screen without effective VRR, the safer choice is Performance Mode. For a capable VRR screen, try Resolution Mode without ray tracing first; add RT only if the reflections and lighting are worth the additional frame-time variation to you.

Set up the PS5 Pro

Best overall: Resolution Mode at 60 Hz

Select Resolution Mode and leave the display at 60 Hz when you want the clearest recommendation that does not depend on a high-refresh panel. PSFoundry reports a locked 60 fps at 4K checkerboard with ray tracing available. This gives the Pro a substantial image-quality advantage without the 70–90 fps variation associated with the 120 Hz ray-traced resolution mode.

Highest frame rate: Performance Mode at 120 Hz

Use the PS5’s Screen and Video > Video Output menu to allow 120 Hz, confirm that the display is operating at 120 Hz, and select the game’s 120 Hz Performance option. PSFoundry reports typical output of 85–105 fps. VRR is important because the frame rate is not a fixed 120 fps; it lets the panel follow those changes within its supported range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

High-refresh resolution: Resolution Mode at 120 Hz with ray tracing

This mode combines the Pro’s higher-resolution presentation with ray-traced effects and a 120 Hz output path. The reported range is 70–90 fps. It is appropriate for a 120 Hz VRR display and for players who prefer RT and image detail over the highest possible frame rate. If you notice uneven camera motion, return to Pro Resolution Mode at 60 Hz or disable ray tracing.

Configure HDR without making the game too dark

Resident Evil 4’s lighting is deliberately built around silhouettes and shadows. Art director Hirofumi Nakaoka explained: “We didn’t just want to make the environment darker to evoke fear, but we put an emphasis on shadows and silhouettes, rather than light, to capture the essence of horror.” Correct calibration should preserve that contrast while keeping important dark detail visible.

  1. Put the television or monitor in its calibrated Game picture mode. Disable a separate vivid or cinema preset that changes tone mapping after you calibrate.
  2. On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and set HDR to On When Supported. Run Adjust HDR if you have not done so for that display.
  3. In Resident Evil 4 Remake, open the HDR calibration screen. Increase or decrease the luminance control until the brightest symbol is just below clipping rather than disappearing into a flat white area.
  4. Check the black-level or shadow portion of the same screen. Keep the darkest detail visible; do not lower it until every dark symbol vanishes.
  5. Return to a dark interior and a bright outdoor area in the game. If the interior is crushed while highlights look fine, revisit the television’s HDR tone-mapping or black-level setting instead of copying a slider value from another panel.

There is no universal numeric HDR preset. The correct position changes with the panel’s peak brightness, OLED or LCD behavior, tone-mapping mode, room lighting and the display’s current picture settings. TechRadar confirms that HDR is available and notes that disabling it exposes sRGB/Rec. 709 alternatives with different shadow behavior. Use SDR only if your display’s HDR implementation is visibly worse after careful calibration; it is not automatically brighter or more accurate.

Use VRR correctly

VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh timing to changing frame times. Set the PS5 VRR output to Automatic, enable VRR in the television or monitor’s own menu, and use the display input that supports its full gaming feature set.

VRR is most useful for the base-PS5 Resolution plus RT combination and for the PS5 Pro’s 120 Hz modes, where the reported frame rates vary. It does not add rendering power, raise a 40 fps scene to 60 fps, or conceal a drop below the panel’s minimum VRR frequency. If the image still judders in a demanding area, select a less intensive mode rather than expecting another VRR toggle to solve it.

Image-cleanup settings

Chromatic aberration

Set chromatic aberration to Off for the cleanest image. PSFoundry notes that the effect can worsen checkerboard blur by adding colored fringing to high-contrast edges. Leaving it on is a stylistic choice, not an image-quality improvement.

Lens distortion

Set lens distortion to Off if you want straighter geometry and a more literal view of the scene. Turning it on contributes to a cinematic camera effect but can make the image appear less precise at the edges.

Depth of field

Depth of field is preference-based. Keep it on for the game’s cinematic focus transitions; turn it off if you prefer a flatter, consistently detailed view while exploring or aiming.

Hair strands

Hair strands change the sheen and appearance of character hair. TechRadar observed no major performance dip from the option, so select it according to how you want the characters to look rather than as a frame-rate optimization.

Field of view and camera wobble

Adjust field of view and camera wobble for comfort. A wider field of view can reduce the feeling of tunnel vision for some players, while camera wobble can be uncomfortable for others. These options do not provide a universal sharpness or performance gain.

Fix a dark, blurry or uneven image

The HDR image is too dark

  • Re-run the in-game HDR calibration and keep black detail visible instead of hiding every dark symbol.
  • Confirm that the display is in its calibrated Game picture mode and that HDR tone mapping has not changed since calibration.
  • Compare the result with HDR disabled and the game’s sRGB/Rec. 709 output. The two modes handle shadows differently, so use the one that preserves detail on your panel.

The image looks blurry or has colored edges

  • Turn chromatic aberration off; it can compound checkerboard softness.
  • Turn lens distortion off if the image looks warped or soft near the sides.
  • On a base PS5, try Resolution Mode without ray tracing for a sharper presentation before accepting the larger frame-rate cost of RT.
  • Remember that Resolution Mode can lower dynamic resolution in busy scenes, so a temporary softness during heavy action does not necessarily indicate a faulty display.

Motion stutters despite VRR

  • Verify that VRR is enabled both in the display menu and under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output on PS5.
  • Check whether the selected mode is below the display’s VRR floor. Base-PS5 Resolution Mode with RT can reach 40 fps, and some panels cannot compensate at that point.
  • Switch to base-PS5 Performance Mode or PS5 Pro Resolution Mode at 60 Hz.

The 120 Hz option is missing or looks unchanged

  • Confirm that the television or monitor actually supports 120 Hz with VRR; a 60 Hz panel cannot display the Pro’s high-refresh modes.
  • Use the PS5 video-output information screen to confirm the active refresh rate after selecting Automatic.
  • Reconnect to the display input that supports its 120 Hz gaming mode, then restart the game so it re-detects the output capability.

Choose settings by priority

If smooth aiming and movement come first

Use base-PS5 Performance Mode with ray tracing off, or PS5 Pro Performance Mode at 120 Hz when you own a compatible 120 Hz VRR display. Disable chromatic aberration and lens distortion, then set HDR carefully so dark areas remain readable.

If image detail and reflections come first

Use base-PS5 Resolution Mode and decide separately whether ray tracing is worth the 40–60 fps range. On PS5 Pro, use Resolution Mode at 60 Hz for the reported locked 60 fps, or use the 120 Hz Resolution mode with RT if your display supports 120 Hz VRR and you accept its typical 70–90 fps range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the horror presentation matters most

Keep depth of field and lens distortion on if you prefer the cinematic camera, and leave hair strands enabled when you like its added sheen. These choices change the look rather than establishing a technically superior preset. Calibrate HDR so the intentional darkness remains atmospheric without erasing shadow detail.

Final setup checklist

  • Select Performance Mode on a base PS5; select Resolution Mode at 60 Hz on a PS5 Pro for the broadest recommendation.
  • Enable PS5 VRR as Automatic and enable VRR on the display.
  • Use a 120 Hz VRR display for either PS5 Pro 120 Hz mode.
  • Leave base-PS5 ray tracing off unless you accept the extra frame-time variation; Pro users have more headroom, especially at 60 Hz.
  • Calibrate HDR on the actual display: brightest symbol just below clipping, shadow detail still visible.
  • Turn chromatic aberration and lens distortion off for a cleaner picture.
  • Treat depth of field, hair strands, field of view and camera wobble as comfort or style choices.
