For most PS2 Classics on PS5, start with Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Resolution: Automatic and HDR: On When Supported. Leave the console at a normal 60 Hz output unless a specific game and display document a supported higher mode. In the game’s emulator menu, choose 4:3 for 16:9 when you want the original PS2 image shape rather than a stretched picture.
120 Hz and VRR are compatibility features, not guaranteed performance upgrades for this catalog. If you see flicker, a blank screen or an unexpected signal, fix the HDMI chain first, then try Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2. The exact internal resolution, frame-rate behavior and visual filters remain title-specific.

What PS2 Classics on PS5 actually are
A PS2 Classic is a selected digital re-release delivered through the current PlayStation Store or PlayStation Plus offerings. It is not the same as inserting an original PS2 disc. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PS5 FAQ states that the console does not play original PlayStation, PS2 or PS3 games; it plays PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, including PlayStation VR games. That figure was published as “99%+ of 4,000+ PS4 games” in 2020, and it does not mean that original PS2 discs are supported.
Each Classic runs through an emulator package prepared for that title. Consequently, a menu option, display filter, aspect-ratio choice or performance characteristic in one release may not exist in another. Sony documents the PS5’s output controls, but it does not publish one universal internal resolution, frame-rate target or filter matrix for the entire PS2 Classics catalog.

The best baseline settings
Use these settings before changing advanced options. They provide a reliable signal and avoid forcing old SDR software into a modern HDR or high-refresh mode it was not designed to use.
| PS5 control | Recommended starting value | What it does | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Automatic | Lets the PS5 select the highest resolution the connected TV reports as supported. | This is the console output resolution, not a promise that the emulator renders every Classic internally at 4K. |
| HDR | On When Supported | Keeps HDR titles in HDR while leaving non-HDR games and apps in SDR. | Always On converts non-HDR content to HDR and can produce less accurate results for SDR-era games. |
| 120 Hz Output | Off unless the TV and game support it | Enables 120 Hz output for compatible televisions and games. | It does not create a 120-frame-per-second mode inside a PS2 Classic. |
| VRR | Use only when your TV and the title behave correctly together | Synchronizes the display refresh rate with supported game output. | Results vary by television; VRR is not a universal emulator fix. |
| Adjust Display Area | Set to the visible edges of your panel | Corrects cropping or excessive black borders. | It changes the screen boundary, not the game’s aspect ratio. |
| Video Transfer Rate | Automatic | Uses the normal HDMI transfer setting. | Try -1 or -2 only when flicker or signal instability appears. |
Set up video output step by step
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Screen and Video, then Video Output.
- Set Resolution to Automatic. Sony says the console detects the TV’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution.
- Set HDR to On When Supported. This allows a title that supplies HDR output to use it without converting SDR software.
- Leave the refresh-rate controls at their ordinary baseline while you establish a stable picture. Only enable 120 Hz or VRR after confirming that your television and the particular game support the mode.
- Open Screen and select Adjust Display Area. Follow the on-screen markers so the image is not cut off and is not unnecessarily surrounded by a large border.
- Launch the PS2 Classic and open its own emulator or game options menu. Aspect-ratio and enhancement controls, when present, are handled there rather than by the PS5’s global video menu.
Fix the picture geometry on a widescreen TV
Choose 4:3 when you want the original shape
Most PS2 software was composed for a 4:3 television. On a 16:9 display, a game that fills the entire width without correction can look horizontally stretched: circles become ovals and characters appear wider. If the Classic offers 4:3 for 16:9, select it to preserve the original geometry. The television will show vertical black bars at the sides, which is expected and preferable to distortion.
A report dated February 28, 2025 documented this option arriving in several PS2 Classics, including Sly Cooper and Jak and Daxter. The rollout, wording and default behavior are title-specific, so do not assume that every Classic has the same menu or that an update has reached every region at the same time.
Do not confuse aspect ratio with screen-area adjustment
Adjust Display Area corrects the boundary of the PS5 output. It cannot turn a 16:9 image into a correctly proportioned 4:3 game. If the picture is geometrically wrong but not cropped, look in the game’s emulator menu for an aspect-ratio control instead of repeatedly changing the display-area setting.

When a title has no 4:3 option
If the emulator menu does not expose an aspect-ratio choice, use the television’s picture-size control only if it can add side bars without cropping the top and bottom. Avoid a “zoom” mode: it enlarges the image and may remove HUD elements or subtitles. Because menu behavior differs by release, record the title’s current option names before applying a system-wide TV preset.
Make motion as smooth as the title allows
Why 60 Hz is the sensible default
A normal 60 Hz output is the safest baseline for a catalog built from older software. It avoids adding a conversion step when the game is designed around 30 or 60 frames per second and gives the HDMI chain a common operating point. This does not guarantee a locked frame rate: a particular Classic can still have the original game’s uneven frame pacing, loading pauses or emulation limits.
When to use 120 Hz Output
In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, 120 Hz Output enables 120 Hz video output for a compatible TV and games that support a 120 Hz frame rate. The setting is not an upscaler or frame-rate generator. A PS2 Classic that outputs 30 or 60 frames per second does not become a 120-fps game merely because the console sends a 120 Hz signal.

When VRR helps, and when it does not
Variable refresh rate (VRR) lets a compatible display adjust its refresh timing in real time for supported games. It can make irregular output look steadier when the game and television cooperate, but Sony warns that behavior varies by TV. It is therefore a display-sync option, not a guaranteed PS2 emulator repair.
Use the PS5’s Apply to Unsupported Games VRR option cautiously. Test one Classic at a time and watch for brightness pulsing, judder, dropped signal or other unexpected behavior. Sony advises turning the option off if such behavior occurs. A stable 60 Hz presentation is better than an aggressive VRR setting that introduces visible artifacts.
Understand what the PS5 cannot promise
“Automatic” resolution describes the signal leaving the PS5. It does not establish the emulator’s internal render resolution, texture filtering, anti-aliasing, frame pacing or widescreen implementation. Sony’s public video-output documentation covers console capabilities rather than a universal PS2 Classic profile, and the 2025 aspect-ratio reporting shows that even menu features can arrive title by title.

Troubleshoot flicker, black screens and wrong signals
Flicker and signal loss are usually HDMI-path or display-mode problems rather than evidence that the game needs a faster emulator setting. Work through this sequence in order:
- Update the television firmware. Older firmware can mishandle newer output combinations, especially high-bandwidth modes.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV. Temporarily remove an AV receiver, soundbar switch, capture device or HDMI switch from the video path. Intermediary equipment may not pass the selected resolution, refresh rate or HDR signal.
- Use the TV’s HDMI 2.1 port when seeking 4K/120 Hz. Some televisions reserve full bandwidth for one or two labeled ports; other ports may be limited to lower modes.
- Use the cable supplied with the PS5 or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. A cable that works at 4K/60 may fail when bandwidth rises.
- Return to the baseline output mode. Set Resolution to Automatic, disable 120 Hz Output and VRR temporarily, and launch the Classic again.
- Reduce the transfer rate if flicker persists. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, try Video Transfer Rate -1. If necessary, test -2. Sony says limiting the transfer rate may improve picture quality when flicker occurs.
- Test another HDMI input or cable. If only one port or cable fails, the fault is in that part of the chain rather than in the game.
- Re-enable features one at a time. Once the picture is stable, test HDR, 120 Hz and VRR separately so you can identify which combination causes the fault.
Blank screen after selecting a high-refresh mode
If the television loses the picture immediately after a 120 Hz or VRR change, wait for the PS5’s automatic recovery prompt. If the signal does not return, restart with those options disabled and reconnect directly to the TV. A PS2 Classic does not require 120 Hz to run, so retaining a stable 60 Hz output is an appropriate final configuration.
Unexpected 1080p instead of 4K
Check that the TV input is the correct HDMI 2.1 port, that the cable is rated for the desired bandwidth and that no intermediary device is negotiating a lower mode. Also verify the TV’s own enhanced-format or deep-color setting, if its manufacturer requires one. If flicker appears when 4K is selected, use Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2 rather than repeatedly forcing 4K/120.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAudio settings that avoid compatibility problems
Audio controls are separate from emulation speed. Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output, select the actual output device, set HDMI Device Type to match a TV or AV amplifier, and choose an Audio Format (Priority) supported by the connected equipment.

For TV speakers, identify the device as a TV and use a format the television accepts. For an AV amplifier, identify it as an AV amplifier and select a format that the receiver and its HDMI path support. If sound disappears after changing equipment, return to this menu and choose the connected device rather than changing video refresh settings; audio configuration does not alter the game’s frame rate or emulator timing.
A practical setup for different goals
| Your priority | PS5 settings | In-game action | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original geometry | Resolution Automatic; HDR On When Supported | Select 4:3 for 16:9 when offered. | Side bars are visible on a 16:9 panel. |
| Maximum signal stability | 60 Hz baseline; 120 Hz and VRR off; Video Transfer Rate Automatic | Use the title’s default emulator mode first. | You are not testing optional high-refresh features. |
| Testing a compatible high-refresh setup | Enable 120 Hz only after confirming TV and title support; test VRR separately. | Play long enough to check for judder, flicker and dropped signal. | Unsupported combinations can behave worse than 60 Hz. |
| Flicker reduction | Keep the chosen resolution but try Video Transfer Rate -1, then -2. | Retest the same scene after each change. | A lower transfer rate may limit the signal mode available. |
| Receiver or soundbar system | Use a direct TV connection while diagnosing video. | Configure HDMI Device Type and Audio Format (Priority) for the receiver afterward. | Direct video bypasses the intermediary until compatibility is confirmed. |
A repeatable per-game checklist
- Confirm that the product is a digital PS2 Classic, not an original PS2 disc.
- Start the console with Resolution Automatic and HDR On When Supported.
- Check the Classic’s emulator menu for 4:3 for 16:9 and select it if preserving original geometry is your goal.
- Play at the ordinary 60 Hz baseline long enough to distinguish the game’s own frame pacing from an HDMI problem.
- If your TV and the title explicitly support 120 Hz, test 120 Hz Output; otherwise leave it off.
- Test VRR only after the basic signal is stable. Disable Apply to Unsupported Games if the image behaves unexpectedly.
- For flicker, follow the firmware, direct-connection, HDMI-port and cable checks before lowering Video Transfer Rate.
- Set audio output independently under Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Document the final settings for that title, because another PS2 Classic may expose different emulator controls and have different output behavior.
What to expect from image quality
A PS2 Classic can look cleaner on a modern display because the PS5 outputs a digital signal and the release may include emulator enhancements. That does not erase the source game’s original assets or design. You may still see soft textures, shimmering, interlaced-era effects or uneven motion. Those characteristics are not automatically signs of an incorrect PS5 setting.
The most dependable improvements are preserving the intended geometry, avoiding an unnecessary SDR-to-HDR conversion and maintaining a stable HDMI signal. More ambitious claims—such as a fixed internal 4K render, universal texture filtering or a catalog-wide 60-fps lock—cannot be made from Sony’s console-level documentation and should be verified for each individual release.

Final recommendation
Use Resolution Automatic, HDR On When Supported and a stable 60 Hz baseline. Select 4:3 for 16:9 in the title’s emulator menu when available and desired. Treat 120 Hz and VRR as optional, title-and-TV-dependent tests, not automatic upgrades. When the image flickers or disappears, repair the HDMI path and try Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2. This approach gives the broadest compatibility while respecting the differences between individual PS2 Classics.
